Our Vision For every needy person in Hong Kong to have access to a healthy meal.

The story of food

When you throw away food, you are not just wasting the food, but also the resources such as the energy, fuel, time, and water that went into growing, harvesting, storing, transporting, and cooking the food.

30%

of all the food produced in the world (equivalent to 1.3billion tonnes) ends up as waste every year – which is enough to feed the 868 million people who go to bed hungry every night Data sources: Global Food Losses and Food Waste - FAO, 2011 The environmental crisis: The environment’s role in averting future food crisis – UNEP, 2009

Every year, consumers in rich countries waste almost as much food (222 million tonnes) as the entire net food production of sub-Saharan Africa (230 million tonnes). 222 million tonnes

230 million tonnes

Humans use

9,087 billion cubic meters of water per year.

25% of this water is used to produce food that no one eats.

As food waste decomposes in landfills, it releases methane – a potent greenhouse gas with 25 times the heat-trapping capacity of carbon dioxide.

3,337 tonnes of food waste are disposed of in landfills each day in Hong Kong.1

This is equivalent to the weight of 7.3 fully-loaded Boeing 747s. By 2019, all three landfills in Hong Kong will be fully utilized.2 Data sources: 1. Hong Kong's four supermarket chains throw out 29 tons of food a day – enough to feed 48,000 families.
