An “impromptu is a musical term for a free-form musical composition. It is also a synonym for spontaneity.

TrombĂŠ wall facing south absorbs solar rays and releases heat later.

Breathable façade on curtain walls helps air circulation.

React to Rain The top floor lounge have sensors on the roof that turn ceiling projectors on when it rains to show an image of rain on the tabletops to inform people of the current weather.

What is Biophilic Design? Biophilic design is inspired by nature and intends to improve well-being, lower stress, increase creativity and productivity, and can provide natural engineering solutions to technical problems.

This space draws the inhabitant’s attention to the outside world that we often forget when inside buildings.

I chose to highlight the the unique system in the construction work that is so beautiful to each individual piece. To showcase this:

A hung axonometric explosion replica of each piece Twice the size of the original Hung in gridded wooden shelters that are just as evidently constructed as the furniture.

What is a “Third Space”? According to Ray Oldenburg, “Third places ‘host the regular, voluntary, informal, and happily anticipated gatherings of individuals beyond the realms of home and work.’”

The Solution

Traditional shopping malls are dying across the country, leaving behind many empty mammoths of useable space. They may not shop, but they go because it is a place to hangout, stroll, run into people, and engage the senses.

Turn this land into a multi-use new “third space” for the a variety of members in the community to enjoy. Inspiration from nature can help provide these third spaces because nature includes creates third-spaces in all shapes and sizes.

Stellings Hus

The building’s exterior facade is one of the most striking features as the top half is composed of 52 by 52 cm Siegerdorf tiles and the bottom is painted metal plate. The large size of the tiles from a far distance loses its identity of a tiled surface.

Stellings Hus was designed by Arne Jacobson in 1937. It is located in an area of historical buildings and it is for this reason that it was not well-liked at first, with its most important historical neighbors dating from the early 19th century. Stellings Hus’s function is split between offices on the upper half of the building and a café on the entry floor.

The abrupt material change shows the striking difference between building styles. Stellings Hus was designed into two sections based on the adjacent buildings.

The ground floor upon the building’s inauguration was a paint shop and has since between completely changed with the furniture. Some of the lighting fixtures on the higher floors are believed to still be original. The originality of the furniture on the higher floors is unknown. There is also a separate side entrance for the offices.

The tiles on the upper part of t building jut out over the paint metal plate below out in a highlighting curve.

The curved lighting that Arne Jacobson designed for the building keep the curved motif.

2

This entry corner mimics that of the top part of the building and marks the center of energy - the relationship with the exterior city square.

3

The large panels of glass on the bottom floor light up like a showcase at night for those in the city square.
