The Scientific Revolution By: Charlotte K.
NICHOLAS COPERNICUS 1473-1543
Discovered the stars, the Earth, and other planets revolved around the Sun. He wrote a manuscript called, the Commentariolus. Also wrote the book called, De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium Libri Vi.
TYCHO BRAHE 1546-1601
Recorded the movement of the planets for many years, helping prove the heliocentric theory. Including a comprehensive study of the solar system and the accurate positions of 777 starts
JOHANNES KEPLER 1571-1630
Discovered three major laws of planetary motion through mathematical formulas; -The sun move in an elliptical orbit around the sun, -The planets do not move at the same speed, etc. Helping prove that Copernicus was right.
GALILEO GALILEI 1564-1642
-Built his own telescope, and used it to study the heavens in 1609. -Announced that Jupiter had 4 moons -Also announced that the sun had dark spots -Noted that the moon had a rough and uneven surface -Galileo's observations, as well as his laws of motion, supported the theories of Copernicus.
FRANCIS BACON "FATHER OF THE SCIENTIFIC REVOLUTION" 1561-1626
He believed that to better understand the world, instead of creating and reasoning theories, he urged scientists to perform experiments and draw conclusions. Which is also know as empiricism, or the experimental method
RENE DESCARTES Father of “analytical geometry 1561-1626
-Developed analytical geometry, which linked algebra and geometry, providing an important tool for scientific research -He relied on logic and mathematics, and believed that everything should be doubted until proven by reason.
ISAAC NEWTON 1642-1727
-He's the one to discover the law of universal gravitation; the three laws of motion. -The discovery of calculus, which led to more powerful methods of solving mathematical problems.
ZACHARIAS JANSSEN BORN BETWEEN 1580 AND 1588, DIED IN 1638
Dutch maker of eyeglasses who made the first microscope, he also invented the first optical telescope.
EVANGELISTA TORRICELLI 1608-1647
Developed the first mercury barometer; which is used to measure atmospheric pressure and predict the weather
GABRIEL FAHRENHEIT 1686-1736
Made the first thermometer to use mercury in glass, making the fahrenheit scale.
ANDERS CELSIUS 1701-1744
Created another scale for the mercury thermometer, making the celsius scale.
ANDREAS VESALIUS 1514-1564
Also referred to as the father of human anatomy. Dissected human corpses and published his observations, proving the studies of Galen wrong.
EDWARD JENNER 1749-1823
Discovered and introduced a vaccine to prevent smallpox
ROBERT BOYLE 1627-1691
Founder of modern chemistry. He proposed that matter was made up of small particles that join together in different ways.
ANTON VAN LEEUWENHOEK 1632-1723
Used a microscope to see red blood cells swimming in tooth scrapings for the first time.
