#76 DE GREG HARDY
CATCH YOUR BREATH You would never know it. Imposing. Relentless. A competitor that stalks offensive foes with fierce tenacity on the first and very last play of every game. Greg Hardy does this despite a life issue. There is a chronic disease that can be deadly if not properly monitored and managed. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, it kills 250,000 people worldwide each year. It also accounts for 10.5 million missed school days. What is it you ask? Asthma. Asthma is sometimes underestimated by those who are not aware of its seriousness. But asthmatics and their caregivers know that it can be a dangerous disease. When an asthma attack occurs, the lining of the airways becomes inflamed and swollen, and in some cases can close completely. The surrounding muscles tighten making it increasingly difficult and painful to breathe. Coughing
and wheezing also may accompany the attack. Those who have experienced an asthma attack may describe it as a terrifying experience. They feel as if they are unable to catch their breath or take in enough air. Asthma attacks can be triggered by a number of things and both triggers and asthma symptoms can vary from person to person. From allergies to foods, pets to pollens and changes in weather to physical exertion, environmental triggers are lurking everywhere. Fortunately, although asthma has the potential to be dangerous, it doesn’t have to be. With proper monitoring and management, asthmatics can have very normal lives. “You want to educate,” says Dr. Maeve O’Connor, founder
of Allergy Asthma & Immunology Relief of Charlotte. “Educate the child; educate the parents, the school nurse. We can all work together so asthmatics can have a normal life.” An asthmatic can even pursue a professional sports career - and many have. Olympic sprinter Jackie Joyner-Kersee, NFL running back Jerome Bettis and even the Carolina Panthers’ defensive end Greg Hardy suffer from asthma. Hardy, who turned the suffering on opposing quarterbacks with 11 sacks last season, has been afflicted with exercisedinduced asthma most his life. “I try not to let it restrict me,” he says. “Things like that, you’ve got to set an example for everybody and you’ve got to keep pushing and show that it’s not a weakness. It’s dangerous, but you can fight through it.” The best way to control asthma is to follow a physicianprescribed treatment plan. Plans will vary for each asthmatic, but may include ongoing medication, rescue medication, inhalers or dietary
restrictions. Education is about knowledge, and Hardy knows what he needs to avoid and how to approach the disease. “I try to stay away from a lot of seafood because it will trigger [my asthma],” Hardy says. “Whatever triggers your asthma outside of what you’re doing in the moment, like athletics, you’ve got to stay away from. Just try to control it and contain it, and stop it before it starts.” In order to avoid triggers, an asthmatic must first recognize them. Journaling events can be the best way to keep track. By recording or keeping a list of foods, weather events, etc., asthmatics, with the help of their physician, are generally able to identify a pattern and learn about their triggers. Although it is very helpful, asthmatics complain that journaling their symptoms, attacks and medication usage can be tedious or inconvenient. Fortunately, there are now solutions to this problem. A variety of smartphone applications can be found that allow asthmatics or their caregivers to more easily and accurately monitor asthma. Hardy suggests one more thing: “A good relationship with your doctor and the sky is the limit,” he says.

Q & A with the EMMY AWARD-WINNING PRODUCERS How did two guys from soutH Jersey end up in Charlotte making films for NAsCAr? Prowler magazine recently sat

he brothers, who go by the tag “Camp Riley,” work together on their film projects. Wayne, the older brother at 33, is a whiz in the editing bay, producing engaging stories from raw footage. A high school athlete in track and football, he attended Illinois State University on a football scholarship before getting into film. Terrell, 29, is out in the field, following NASCAR around the country to capture images on the track and beyond. He studied film at the Art Institute of Philadelphia. Both brothers got their start in filmmaking as interns at NFL Films. After college, Wayne stayed with NFL Films while Terrell headed for L.A and a job with FOX Sports. Then in 2005, they both had the opportunity to come to NASCAR Productions and work as a team. “I think it’s the best of both worlds, to be honest, working with Wayne, we kind of feed off each other’s strengths,” Terrell says. Today, the brothers occupy offices in the NASCAR office building next to the Hall of Fame. That’s where Prowler caught up with the brothers to find out about their charity
work, their careers in film, and their five Emmy awards. PROWLER: Can you tell our readers a little about Bears for Buddies? TERRELL: It’s a great thing to be part of. We want to thank Lenora and Toni (of Celebrity Charity Wishes). We look forward to participating and raising funds. P: Do you participate in any other community outreach? WAYNE: We are very involved with the local schools. TERRELL: We speak at high schools and colleges about what to expect in the real world. And we bring in interns to work on projects or to shadow us out in the field, both at NASCAR and on our own productions. WAYNE: We try to give them a firsthand look at things that we thought would be cool when we were kids. Seeing what actually goes on out on a shoot. And it’s cool for us to get feedback from the kids.
P: How long have you worked for NASCAR Productions? TERRELL: This is our ninth season. P: What sort of things do you do for NASCAR? TERRELL: We produce a lot of stuff that shows up on all the NASCAR platforms – Fox, ESPN, the Speed Channel. We do short-form docs, commercials, even music videos, and we are getting into long form documentaries. You can get a taste of what we do on our Camp Riley YouTube channel. P: What’s the biggest challenge about working here? TERRELL: The schedule. This is a very deadline driven business. We sometimes work around the clock. Our typical work week is sixty hours. P: What’s the best thing? WAYNE: All the great stories: the competition, the passion of the crews and drivers. And of course all the great images at the track. TERRELL: The drivers are becoming more personal, opening up more. You look at any athlete and there’s a story about their struggles, how they got where they are.
stories are so powerful. P: What’s the coolest thing you’ve worked on? TERRELL: Going to South Africa with R&B artist Anthony Hamilton. It was pretty cool in a couple of ways – seeing how people over there know him and love his music, and just seeing how people lived. We were able to go to an orphanage with Anthony and visit the kids and make some donations. It really hits home – makes you appreciate what you have. P: What’s your next project? TERRELL: For NASCAR, we’re developing a project about fans from other countries. We get pictures and gifts from all over. Some German fans even sent us candy. Some of them come over twice a year to see races. We think it would make a great short form feature. P: How do you like Charlotte? TERRELL: We love Charlotte! It’s not too big, not too small – just right. You’re always meeting people from all over. WAYNE: Charlotte has become our home.
P: So you’re both single guys [although Wayne has a “steady.”] Where can the ladies of Charlotte expect to meet you? P: You’ve got five Sports Emmy awards (so TERRELL: We both live in Ballantyne, and far) between you. What were they for? we like to hang out in Dilworth and NoDa. BEARS FOR BUDDIES is a program that raises money for terminally ill children. The funds provide hope for these children who are not expected to recover and help out their families with everyday expenses. The program is a project of Celebrity Charity Wishes, Inc., which this year will donate 600 new teddy bears along with gift bags containing games, books, movies, iPods, hats, socks and other items to make hospital stays more comfortable for these children in need. They will be distributed to children at the Levine Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House of Charlotte, Ronald McDonald House of Atlanta, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta in the weeks before Christmas. Celebrity Charity Wishes was founded by Lenora Bobo and Toni “B” Brown, hosts of WorldWide Flava, a celebrity show that aired on Time Warner Cable Access from 2003-2007. Originally organized to grant the final wishes of Brianna Watts, a patient at Levine Children’s Hospital, the organization has since branched out into granting wishes to other children with terminal diseases. Bears for Buddies is its largest annual initiative. Each year celebrities volunteer to distribute the bears to the children. This year Michelle Williams, formerly of Destiny’s Child, and DJ Drama are among those participating, in addition to Wayne and Terrell Riley of NASCAR Productions. You can help out by donating $10 (enough to provide a bear and a gift bag for sick child) on the Celebrity Charity Wishes website, www.celebritycharitywishes.org.
NEW COACH, NEW OPTIMISM CHARLOTTE – The first nine years of Charlotte Bobcats basketball has left many local fans with a sour taste in their mouth. Poor records, bad decisionmaking and subpar players have combined to make the franchise the losingest in NBA history at a woeful .346 winning percentage. But a new coach, several key new players and the anticipation of the return of a popular team nickname have combined to give Charlotte NBA fans more optimism than they’ve had in years.
Bobcats hope “last” season paves way for Hornets greatness by Richard Walker
All the positive vibes come after the offseason began with significant uncertainty. Less than a week after the season ended in April with a three-game winning streak to finish 21-61 overall and avoid the league’s worst record for a second straight season, team owner Michael Jordan fired Mike Dunlap after one season on the job. But by mid-August, the Bobcats had hired a new coach in much-coveted longtime NBA assistant Steve Clifford, applied for and were granted rights to the popular “Hor-
nets” nickname that’ll become official for the 2014-15 season, drafted a promising rookie (Cody Zeller), signed their most expensive rival free agent (Al Jefferson) and re-signed three of their own free agents (Gerald Henderson, Josh McRoberts and Jannero Pargo). The Jefferson signing away from the Utah Jazz was easily the most tangible indication times could be changing. The three-year, $41 million contract the veteran center received was a staggering four times larger than the previous

top contract the Bobcats have given to a free agent from another team. Coupled with the re-signing of Henderson to a three-year, $18 million contract, the franchise did much to change whatever notion remained of it not being interested in paying top dollar for top talent. But, as Jefferson knows, expectations are now growing for the organization. “I know the fans are very excited about me being here,” said the 10-year veteran who will give Charlotte its first legitimate low-post offensive
scoring option in the team’s history. “But I don’t feel any pressure. If anything, it makes me feel real good that the fans believe in me. “My goal is to not let the fans down. That’s one of the things that made me come to Charlotte. The team was a big fan of my game and felt that my game and the other guys can turn this team around.” But can it? Certainly more talented pieces are in place for Clifford. “Camp is about having the right mentality for your group to develop a team game that will allow us to play against any opponent in any game,” said Clifford, whose first Bobcats’ training camp began on October 1st. “I know there will be questions about, ‘How many games can you win?’ and ‘How good can you be?’ “I have no idea. And I think that would be the wrong mindset for me and the players to have. We have to learn to play together and how to play with each other. We have to develop a team that will allow us to play consistently against the best teams in the NBA night-in and night-out.” One thing is certain: Clifford will have perhaps the deepest roster in team history, even if there is some unproven
talent in the group. At point guard, former firstround pick Kemba Walker and Ramon Sessions return and will be joined by late season acquisition (and summer free agent re-signing) Pargo. At off guard, Henderson returns and should be pushed by Las Vegas Summer League and European Summer League standout Jeffery Taylor. Veteran Ben Gordon also is back and is a proven lategame scorer. At small forward, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist vows to be better in his second season and former NBA sharpshooter Mark Price is a first-year Clifford assistant whose primary chore will be in helping KiddGilchrist improve his shooting stroke. Tolliver and Jeff Adrien are among the potential backups at this position. The frontcourt will get the benefit of new Bobcats’ assistant Patrick Ewing’s expertise. An 11-time NBA All-Star, two-time Olympian and 2008 Basketball Hall of Famer, Ewing is back in coaching after a year away. And players like Jefferson are quick to point out Ewing’s credentials. “I can’t wait to work with a guy like Patrick Ewing,” Jefferson said of Ewing, who has
been an assistant coach for two All-Star centers in former Houston Rockets center Yao Ming and current Rockets center Dwight Howard when Howard was in Orlando. “I think some people forget that he helped make Dwight Howard the superstar that he is. Dwight had the talent, but Patrick showed him how to be a true big man, especially on the defensive side.” Jefferson, Zeller, McRoberts and third-year Bismack Biyombo stand to benefit most from Ewing’s coaching and experience. The regular season begins with an October 30 road trip to Cleveland before the home-opener against Cleveland on November 1. There are nine more home dates in November, including the first of two trips to Charlotte for two-time defending NBA champion Miami (Nov. 16). “So far, everything’s been great,” Walker said. “He (Clifford) has been teaching us a lot in a short period of time. I think everyone likes him and I think he’ll be really good for us. “As far as our season, we just want to get better. That’s the goal. We want to get better and grow together.”

Q & A with Naomi Grossman
Beauties, Beasts and All Hallow’s Eve “Pepper”- American Horror Story
Like the Greeks loved tragedies, the modern American loves a dark tale chock-full of tormented characters, epic beauty, unspeakable events and so often the ironic, twisted ending. We sat down with a few favorite TV and film stars and asked them to reveal in their own words why this love affair with all things grim and grotesque captivates our culture. When and where did your acting career get it’s spark? My parents were always very good about exposing me to culture. We frequented the theatre and movies, so from a very young age I knew that’s what I wanted to do. When I was about 11, I got involved with a children’s theatre company in Denver. Every Saturday morning, we sang, danced, and did sketches at a comedy club downtown. (Amazingly, a lot of those kids are still in the biz— now heavy-hitter comedians, writers, and producers in Hollywood). Soon I/we were acting in anything and everything that came out of Colorado— “Father Dowling Mysteries,” regional commercials, etc. Got my SAG card when I was 15... Then went to Northwestern University as a
theatre major. Four cold, Chicago winters later, I traded in my wooly coat and went west to Hollywood! H ow did you find out about the part of Pepper and were you intimidated by playing this outrageous role? Oh, I’m not intimidated by outrageous roles. On the contrary— have you seen my YouTube channel?— that’s what I excel in! As far as finding out about Pepper, it was an audition like any other. My agent called with the appointment and sides to prepare, though they were very vague as to what the role actually was. The breakdown read, “4-5 feet tall, possibly malformed, childlike.” Which is obviously a tricky to prepare for! So I did what I could, wore flats and a
baby-doll dress, and just did a good job. That’s all you can do. The other girls auditioning were actual little people, so I really didn’t think I had a chance. But the same folks that cast “AHS” cast “Glee,” “The Mentalist,” etc. so I just treated it as a chance to meet casting in hopes they’d consider me for something in the future. So no, to answer your question, even if I were daunted by outrageous roles, I couldn’t possibly be intimidated because I didn’t even know what I’d gotten! It wasn’t until I was cast, and saw the photos the makeup department had manipulated to show what I’d look like as Pepper did realize what the role even was. And even then, with such a star-studded cast, I never dreamt they’d entrust such a meaty role to an unknown actor like me. For all
I knew, I was just one of an army of pinheads. It wasn’t until I was on set for the first time that realized I might be the craziest in the asylum. (Or the craziest-looking anyway.) By the time I’d figured it all out, it was too late to be intimidated... cameras were rolling, and Sister Jude was in the house! It’s funny to see how lovely you are in your pictures of you beside the pictures of you as Pepper. You obviously look nothing like her. How long did it take to do your makeup? About 2 1/2-3 hours, and that’s with two SPFX guys working feverishly on me the entire time. The makeup department deserves mad props for my transformation.
Though I suppose I had a little something to do with it too... At the end of the day, it’s just prosthetics. They sit on the counter unless you do something with them! Any inspiration for playing Pepper? How did you become her? I can’t take the credit for that. That’s all Ryan Murphy. He’s a big fan of Tod Browning’s 1933 film, “Freaks,” which starred a microcephalic character named Schlitzie. He’s who Pepper was modeled after. So I obviously watched that on a loop for a month before shooting. As far as how I “became her,” the makeup did a lot of the work. It’s kinda’ like putting on a costume or wig— it informs the way you move, speak, everything. You do your internal work first, then put on the external layers, and hopefully it all comes together!
Were you aware at the time of filming what a huge hit AHS has become?
general. My actor-friends on procedural dramas aren’t enjoying the same freaky fandom!
Not quite. I’d never even seen it before when I auditioned. Then once I was cast, I watched the entire first season in a week. Didn’t sleep too well after that! I was especially struck by how excellent the acting was, and how high the production value was. So I knew it would catch on, if it hadn’t already. But I had no idea how vast the fandom is. That there are people creating fake Facebook accounts, role playing as their favorite character... Animating gifs, painting portraits, composing songs, posting “Pepper for President” signs around town, even tattooing me on their limbs! The sheer creativity that Pepper has inspired is astonishing. Part of that is of course due to the show’s popularity, but I think it’s also the horror genre in
I love it! I mean, if in forty years I’m still signing pictures of Pepper, I may need an intervention. But for now, it’s what’s happening! Besides, I get to travel, see old friends, make new ones... I mean, it’s not exactly what I want to be doing necessarily— it’s a far cry from acting— but shoot, a year and a half ago nobody wanted my signature! So it’s a nice change. As far as odd fans and stories, I wouldn’t know where to begin! In fact, I was thinking about writing a Christopher Gueststyle mockumentary about it. So I’m going to deflect that question, and let you come and see those stories in the theatre instead!
How do you like the convention circuit? Any odd fans or stories?
What upcoming projects do you have planned? The really juicy stuff I of course can’t talk about! But in addition to a full slate of personal appearances, I’m developing an animated project with one of the stars of “SOA.” It looks like I’ll be doing a Lucha Libre, sci-fi film with Mexican wrestling star, Mil Máscaras. I’m always looking to remount my solo shows (in case your readers are in school, and would like to have me come be their campus entertainment!). I’m even looking to adapt one of my shows into a TV series. So, I’m busy! American Horror Story has become one of the top shows on TV with legions of addicted fans, has nearly 5 million “Likes” on Facebook and episodes are now available on Netflix. Q & A with Mark Torgl
Our Prowler gals caught up to Mark Torgl—the Toxic Avenger—a cult favorite enjoying a fresh round of fandom. The Super-Hero from New Jersey was on-hand for the Mad Monster Party here in Charlotte this past February and posed with fans, signed mops and showed just how to fight off bullies. The rest is history. The next year when they were casting for the “Toxic Avenger” apparently they auditioned hundreds of kids for Melvin and didn’t like anyone. Lloyd finally said what they were looking for was what I did on “First Turn On”. They called me up and said if I wanted the part it was mine. Tell us what you have been up to since we saw you last? After I moved to Hollywood I was working regularly in post production, which I really enjoy. I’ve also made a bunch of short films and I did a cameo in Toxic Avenger 4 as Evil Melvin. Hollywood is doing a big budget Toxic Avenger remake with Arnold Schwarzenegger. I would love to get a cameo possibly asToxi’s dad. Everyone call the producers at Lions Gate Entertainment and insist on a part for me. I’m also acting in my own film which is currently in production, “Toxic Tutu” The almost true story of what became of Toxic Avenger’s Mark Torgl! Which Toxie movie is your favorite? The original of course, The Toxic Avenger has a life that just won’t quit. Being part of this cult classic never gets old. And of course, Toxic Avenger 2 and 3 with Fake Melvin just didn’t cut it. Lloyd says he regrets not giving me the $50 I asked for in 2 and 3. Prowler Girls: How did you get in the acting business? I’ve been acting like an idiot since I was a little kid. Seriously, I was always in the high school and college plays, but getting cast in Toxic Avenger was kind of a fluke. I was attending NYU Film School to be a filmmaker and Troma posted a notice on the Job Board at NYU to come work on a “real” feature film for “The First Turn On” —the film they made the year before Toxic Avenger. So I met with Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz and they asked what I wanted to do. I said I wanted to be the Script Supervisor, Lloyd said “OK, you can be the Script Supervisor, what else do you want to do?” I said I liked writing, Lloyd said “OK, you can write some additional scenes, what else do you want to do?” I should have said that I wanted to direct. So, I didn’t sign on as an actor initially, but typically everyone on the crew ends up in the film somewhere. When the actor who was hired to play Dwayne, a real social misfit, didn’t show up, Lloyd said, “Mark you go in and do the part”.
What is your favorite toxic substance? The new film I’m working on “Toxic Tutu” there’s a drink called “The Intoxicator” It’s green and very contagious. How’s your relationship now with Lloyd Kaufman? Really good, I did an autograph signing with Lloyd and the Troma Team at ComiCon this year and I’m also appearing with Lloyd at Stan Lee’s ComiKaze in LA Nov 1, 2 and 3. Lloyd also appears as himself in “Toxic Tutu.” Any advice to the aspiring janitors out there? Keep your mop handle clean. Everyone always wants to hold my mop at monster conventions. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve been asked to sign? I’ve signed a real janitors mop, a breast, and a butt. Breasts
and butts can be difficult, you have to stretch the skin out so the signature looks right. What advice do you have for kids that are being bullied today? A part of “Toxic Tutu” has to do with Bullying. Kids should not let bullies get away with it no matter what—stand your ground and let someone know. I think often if a kid stands up to a bully, the bully often ends up not being so tough. Tell us about your new Kickstarter project and how can we get involved? It started when I was pursued by the people of The Mad Monster Party to be a celebrity at their convention in Charlotte, North Carolina in March. I had never done a convention until this one, and my best friend from NYU and I decided to document it. We created a fictionalized story around the monster convention backdrop and continued filming at “Days of The Dead” Los Angeles and then at ComiCon San Diego where Lloyd and the Troma Crew participated. We are going to be launching a Kickstarter campaign October 18th for 30 days to raise funds to continue filming and finish the mockumentary project. So please everyone go to KickStarter.com and look up “Toxic Tutu”—we have some great fun incentives for supporters. And even if you can’t make a pledge, please spread the word to anyone you know who is a Toxic Avenger fan, The world needs “Toxic Tutu”. Also, go to my Facebook fan page at www.facebook.com/ToxicAvengerMarkTorgl and give me a “Like”. We will also be updating our progress at www.toxictutu.com.

PROWLER TRAINER Coach Felando Clark Schools NFL Hopefuls And The Rest Of Us
Q & A ON PRINCIPLES
COACH C, OUR STAFF HERE AT PROWLER MAGAZINE has had the pleasure of knowing you for a very long time and are familiar with you and your accomplishments as an athlete, bodybuilder (former Mr. NC) and personal trainer. We couldn't be more excited about the new fitness column you'll be writing for our readers beginning next month. It’s the greatest gift we could give them with the New Year fitness push just ahead.
I
n this edition, we're glad to sit down with you and talk about state-ofthe-art fitness, the popularity of weight loss reality TV, the positive impact that these movements may yet have on generations of Americans, and give our readers insight into what Coach C. does to inspire people from all walks of life on a daily basis. Let’s start with your current focal point. Today you run a successful personal training company,
Impact Fitness Company—tell us what IFC, Co. does well? Coach C: We specialize in finding the niche for each client—fully-customized, tightly focused and effective workouts that get you to your goal..fast. One great way to do this that people are getting excited about is HIGH INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING. Bottom line: it gets superior results and the time required to do the workouts is negligible—it fits in any schedule. Most of my clients participate in a one-on-one or group program I call 30 for 30. It’s 30 minutes, 3x per week (it’s also $30 per week). We do workouts at gyms, fitness facilities, home gyms and area apartment communities. In all, you put up 100% effort for
about 12 minutes with essential rest in-between. You walk away with a peak workout behind you and the rest of your day or evening. And really, you won’t get a look like this with anything that feels familiar to your body. We shock the system, turn up the heat, build the core, max your major muscle systems and the fat falls away, the metabolism skyrockets and your body becomes strong quickly. Prowler: That sounds more than a little intense. Is it for everyone? Coach C: The first workout for each new trainee is a fitness test. We’ll look at many factors and tailor the workout by moving intervals and making it doable for the trainee. We don’t overdo it right out of the gate—we build. Each workout from there, we move forward. Prowler: You create one-on-one workouts in the 30 for 30 program, correct? Coach C: Correct. We also work in groups—which are preferred because you have support from others as well. Prowler: And do you recommend diet plans or diet pills, etc. in this program? Coach C: I don't recommend diet pills or quick fix diet fads, I believe the body responds best to proper nutrition, exercise, rest and lots of water. Prowler: Is this similar to the training you do with high school and college age kids who are NFL hopefuls? Coach C: It is. Every player in every sport will benefit from increased stamina and full body conditioning, however with football, it's more sport-specific and focus is on speed, agility, power and overall athletic conditioning. Prowler: We hear you have a really promising nephew that you are really proud of who was brought up for ACC football exhibition? Coach C: Yes! For more info on Coach C’s programs:

ON GROCERY GAMES
H
appy Holidays Prowler Fans! I cannot believe another year will be escaping us so quickly. I am still abuzz from my summer fun and special adventures. This time each year many of us begin to reflect on all the special people and extraordinary things for which we are so grateful. This time of year is very special to me because I appreciate the season, the time to share with others, and memories of the past year. I also wonder what is on the hori-
zon for my family and me. My hope is that with all 2013 has brought each of you; everyone can find gratitude for something. This is a great time of year to show off your best family recipes and rise to the challenge of creating new recipes from the many leftovers after your annual holiday feasts. My heart’s desire for this particular article is to share how excited I have been about my professional start in 2013. I started the year off in my new job as Executive Chef at First
Savory Sweet Life Cranberry Sauce Make your own homemade cranberry sauce this year for Thanksgiving using fresh cranberries. This easy recipe is so simple but renders out some intense flavor. Ingredients 12 oz bag fresh cranberries 3/4 cup orange juice 2/3 cup brown sugar 1/3 cup white sugar 2 oz gold rum
Serves Two Delicious Cups
Instructions Place all the ingredients in a sauce pan and cook on medium-high for 15-20 minutes or until most of the liquid has reduced – stirring occasionally. You’ll hear the cranberries popping – don’t worry, that’s what you want them to do. Remove from heat and serve. Cranberry sauce can be made days ahead and brought to room temperature or slightly heated before serving.
United Methodist Church and then I was able to compete in my first cooking competition. That was a true adrenaline rush! I am so grateful to have been chosen to be on Food Network’s new hit series Guy’s Grocery Games. I hope the viewing audience finds great favor with the show and continues to watch the many challenges that most of us are faced with daily in our quest for finding that ultimate meal right off the grocery shelves. That experience has truly humbled me and inspired me to work even harder on my personal culinary arts portfolio. As I take this time to plan for my next steps I am truly looking forward to making my future even stronger and brighter. As Professional Chefs we are always striving for excellence. With every plate we create an experience. With every dish we leave a personal lasting legacy in the hearts of others. This position provides immediate selfgratification or disappointment depending on the outcome of our product. However, there is one thing that is guaranteed in this journey to create the best dish possible, we learn to never give up. As each of you take some time with family, friends, colleagues and visitors look back at all you have accomplished and inhale the sweet journey that is waiting for you. Enjoy your time with family, eat lots of great food and don’t let life pass you by. Remember to always cook with love, passion, heart and soul! M Chef Smith
