Meet New NC Governor
Pat McCrory
W
ith a record seven terms as Mayor of Charlotte, his is not exactly a new face to many Charlotteans. His role as a champion for economic growth in the Charlotte Region came at a crucial point in our fair city’s development and his impact is still felt years after he left office. What is “new” about having Pat McCrory as Governor of North Carolina is the likely elevated level of interaction and connection the Governor’s post will have for Charlotte and the rest of Western North Carolina. At times Raleigh has seemed a world away from Charlotte as key state issues arose. We at Prowler are looking forward to seeing “Mayor Pat”, now “Governor Pat” if you please, take the same decisive action with our state in the areas of taxes, crime, energy, transportation, education and of course, economic development that he formerly has within the city. Learn more and become connected to your new Governor at www.PatMcCrory.com, make friends on Facebook or follow him on Twitter. He was a great Mayor, and always a good sport—see a classic cover from a previous publication, Charlotte’s Best, where Mayor Pat donned a slightly dusty Superman costume from Morris Costumes to channel Clark Kent—all as he accepted his award for Man of the Year.
Your New Congressman
Richard Hudson Like Governor McRory, Richard Hudson is no stranger to those who follow local politics. He served former congressman (R) Robin Hayes as District Director in Concord and Rockingham. He also served as Chief of Staff in Washington for five years. This is, however, Richard’s first time in office himself. You’ve no doubt seen his photo many times here in Prowler, as his friends on our own staff have covered his journey into office.
Congressman Richard Hudson with Governor Pat McCrory Following his election to office as U.S. Representative for North Carolina’s 8th District, National Journal recognized Richard as a “rising star” in the political world. Richard’s initial focus is on reducing taxes, creating jobs and retraining our work force. Sounds good to us—we’re looking forward to watching him work for the people of Charlotte and North Carolina. Congrats, Congressman Hudson!

iving in the Queen City of Charlotte has its perks. Native or newby, you’ve had to notice the recent uptick in the frequency and quality of top touring performers. It’s mind-blowing. Charlotte has always had a pulse for live entertainment, but with a multitude of new venues built in the last decade, you’d be hard-pressed to find a genre of music that isn’t well-represented—and crazy to miss some of the upcoming shows.

t was a spectacular site for fans when the new class of Charlotte Bobcats piled up several wins in a row—but most of us knew it wouldn’t be sustainable. And yet, despite the recent slide, the games are great entertainment. There’s hustle in our young team, and with great offers from the franchise on tics, it’s hard to beat the entertainment value of an NBA game and all of the fanfare that comes along with it. Celebrity sightings are a given, and then there are the Lady Cats. Cam Newton and The Carolina Panthers Finish Strong
There were high hopes and some dark days in Carolina this past season. We watched the slow, sometimes painful maturation of a gifted athlete at the helm. Some days he won games, other days he lost them. There were sparks of greatness on both sides of the ball and in the end most fans may have enough to tide us over and hang on to as we sit out this post season and dream of something greater when a more determined, more focused pack of Panthers takes the field in 2013. Here are some memorable moments to tide you over.
RIVERA TO STAY Question Answered
A
s the Carolina Panthers took the field in 2012 a sense of excitement quite possibly turned into a sense of entitlement for elements of the team. After a record-setting romp in 2011 yieled no Playoff spot, yet showed promise and gave many reason to look forward to the 2012 season. And why not? Key players returned healthy, the talent in the Carolina backfield consisted of two talented and powerful runners in Stewart and Williams ($83 Million combined) and now a powerhouse fullback in Tolbert. And of course, #1, Cam Newton, now with a full NFL off season under his belt. Steve Smith was ready without question and LaFell and Murphy were stepping up themselves. The O-line was healthy, Greg Olsen was prepared to handle short yardage at the TE spot. Things were looking good on the O side—minus Jeremy Shockey. It had been the defense that struggled in 2011, so now with Beason back, Davis back and our #1 pick Kuechly rounding out a rotational linebacker squad this looked great, too. Up front Charles Johnson was fired up and providing great competition for a highlyexplosive Greg Hardy. Deep in the field Godfrey and Munnerlyn appeared up to the task. Yet from the start, things seemed flat. These high expectations were exacting a toll on this youthful franchise. And the answers didn’t seem to come. The celebrated offensive play calling of Rob Chudzinski seemed to read like an open book to teams who now had had time to study them and Newton. The holes clogged up, Newton and Williams found themselves backing up and scrambling versus striding through for first downs. Stewart performed well early but left the season soon with an ankle injury. And the pressure and
Breaking News: Rivera fires RB, WR and LB coaches. Stay tuned to ESPN 730am and visit SouthernSportsJournal.com for frequent updates on offseason developments.
crumbling confidence soon infected the receivers as well. Overthrown balls by a pressured Cam Newton left receivers gasping for air and shaking their heads. Many balls placed perfectly were dropped by typically steady hands—like those of Smith, LaFell and Murphy. And then the O-line started cracking with injuries and blown assignments. This is how it happens. This is how you lose. The defense was dealt blows early—Beason—back and then...gone. There were miracles—Thomas Davis returning after his third ACL surgery prompted many sportscasters to go on and on about his tenacity. Excepting Manning and Peterson, he was a shoein for NFL Comeback Player of the Year. And another miracle himself—Luke Kuechly, drafted first overall in the NFL Draft—led the league in tackles, was named Defensive Player of the Week and surely changed the nature of final scores throughout the weekend with outstanding stewardship at middle linebacker—now questioning Beason’s return in 2013. And the beasts—Charles Johnson, Greg Hardy, Dwan Edwards...they all played well, rallying the team late in the season with punishing hits on QBs and RBs to set the tone for wins. And perhaps the man most in the spotlight as the loses piled up, second year head coach Ron Rivera—his was a lonely journey at times. It would have been easy at one point for this team to sink into total destruction. We’ve seen that here in Carolina in recent years. Yet, staying calm, refocusing players, and piling up each difficult win, he managed to hang on to dignity, and ultimately, his job. Next year it appears that this team will be able to enter the season with a different sense, a sense of workmanship, competiitveness and ultimately, pride. Fans are looking forward to that.

S
o we know what we’re in for, here is the official word from the NFL and the Carolina Panthers on our opponents for next season: The Panthers' opponents for the 2013 season have been determined with the conclusion of the 2012 regular season. In addition to home and away games against NFC South foes Atlanta, New Orleans and Tampa Bay, Carolina will play all four teams from both the NFC West and AFC East. The Panthers' remaining two 2013 intraconference opponents are based on the 2012 standings. Carolina will host the New York Giants and play at Minnesota since all three teams finished second in their respective divisions. Dates and times will be announced by the NFL in the spring. After that, an on-sale date for single-game tickets to Panthers home games for the 2013 season will be determined. ABOUT CAROLINA'S 2013 OPPONENTS
The Panthers will play seven games against teams that finished the year with a .500 or better record, including six contests against opponents who made the playoffs during the 2012 campaign. Carolina has compiled a 14-6 regular season record versus the NFC West since division realignment in 2002. The Panthers will face the Cardinals for the 11th time in the last 13 years after only playing once in the franchise's first six seasons. This will be the 12th regular season meeting between Arizona and Carolina, making the Cardinals the Panthers' most common non-division opponent (excluding former NFC West mates St. Louis and San Francisco) in team history. The Panthers own a 7-13 all-time record against the AFC East. The Dolphins are the only NFL team Carolina has never beaten in the regular season, losing all four previous games to Miami. The NFL's scheduling formula implemented in 2002 with realignment guarantees that all teams play each other on a regular, rotating basis. Under the formula, every team within a division plays 16 games as follows: Home and away games against its three division opponents (six games).
The four teams from another division within its conference on a rotating three-year cycle (four games). The four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating four-year cycle (four games). Two intraconference teams based on the prior year's standings (two games). Beginning in 2010, a change was made to how teams are paired in the schedule rotation to ensure that teams playing the AFC and NFC West divisions would not have to make two west coast trips (e.g. at San Francisco and at Seattle), while other teams in their division had none (e.g. at. St. Louis and at Arizona).
