SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND, 2014 Atherton Mills, 2100 South Boulevard, Opens at 11am
I’ve always loved Chili Cook-Offs—they bring out the best in us all: fellowship, community, sharing, and as a friend of mine recently pointed out—the competitive spirit. Think you’ve got what it takes to taste-test your chili against top local restaurants and previous winners? There’s nothing to lose and everything to gain: new friends, a day packed with family fun and maybe, just maybe, a trophy and bragging rights. There are four categories, so you’ve got four chances to win: Red, Vegetarian, “The Other Ones” and People’s Choice. Cook or not, do come out and join this great bunch of folks for a family Sunday in
Southend at Atherton Mills and the Icehouse Bar & Grill parking lots. Festivities include live music from great local bands, a cornhole tournament, games and fun surprises. Best of all—a $10 admission gets you all the chili you can taste from all contestants. And proceeds are going to several great local causes. Eat up! To enter, contact: MelanieCTritten@gmail.com or 704-968-2734. For more info see the Dilworth South End Chili Cook-Off page on Facebook.

THE RETURN OF OUR FAVORITE NBA MONIKER
hornets SET FOR BUZZ FEST 2014
The Charlotte Hornets name officially returned to the Carolinas on May 20, 2014 after a decade of Charlotte Bobcats basketball and an NBA Playoff appearance by the Bobcats to close out the books. The Hornets was the name of the city’s first NBA franchise from 1988-2002. The Charlotte Hornets announced that the organization will host Buzz Fest, the largest two-day jam sessionstyle fan festival in the Carolinas to commemorate the return of the Hornets and the beginning of the team’s 2014-15 season on Friday, Oct. 24 (3 p.m. – 11 p.m.), and Saturday, Oct. 25 (11 a.m. – 11 p.m.) at the Charlotte Convention Center. General admission for Buzz Fest is $10 per day and children 12 years of age and under are free when accompanied by a paying adult. Tickets go on sale on Friday, Sept. 12 and can be purchased at the Time Warner Cable Arena Box Office and the Bojangles Coliseum Box Office as well as online at Ticketmaster.com and hornets.com. As one of their member benefits, Hornets season ticket holders

interactive jam session atmosphere that will feature musical performances, a youth basketball tournament, meet-and-greets with former Hornets and NBA greats and a kids zone. Each day fans can enjoy live music and performances from national recording artists (to be announced at a later date), as well as interactive games, youth basketball and chalk talks with Hornets legends and former NBA Greats. The festivities begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, and includes Grammy Awardwinning artist and Hornets minority owner Nelly, who will be hosting the weekend, as well as current and former Hornets and NBA players,
Center will be open and various entertainment elements will be on display. HOT SPOT
TEXICALI
Taco & Tequilar Bar
A Tarantino Vibe In Charlotte day. The TXC Signature Margarita, made with Olmeca Altos Planta, Patron Citronage and Cointreau, is the smoothest margarita around – the best we’ve sampled this season. The menu, a collaboration between Executive Chef Gene Briggs and Chef de Cuisine Carlos Rangle, a native of Mexico City, features tender pork carnitas, Texas brisket sliders, bacon guacamole, and for dessert a dark chocolate and chili brownie. Tuesday is Taco Day with $2 tacos all day. You can choose from a wide Tacos and margaritas are common on the Charlotte scene, range of fillings including a but the new Texicali in the NC Music Factory takes the con- vegetarian grilled portabella, pork carnitas with cept to a new level. Owner Alex Myrick, who also operates pineapple salsa, carne Osso and Eight Sushi in the NC Music Factory and Blue in asada with grilled onions, Uptown, says he wanted to create a place with the soul and and – our personal favorites – the trio of seafood tacos, culture built in.
“It’s a mix of personalities: Day of the Dead, hot rods, motorcycles, Texas blues, California surfer music, in my mind it all melts together,” he says. “It’s as if Quentin Tarantino did a restaurant.” Skeletons, including one riding a motorcycle, and colorful skulls peek from every corner, bringing the Day of the Dead vibe into focus. Murals, painted by Chris Davis, an artist discovered among the kitchen staff, create a fun, bright atmosphere. A hotrod, built by Steve Winslow, owner of Steel Dreams Customs in Monroe, dominates the back of the room. And in the center of the bar island, in the place of honor, is Myrick’s favorite work of art – a giant, fully
functional Harley with custom paint and a big Buell engine. You expect Tarantino to appear any minute, down a couple of shots of tequila, and ride off into the sunset. Quentin will be hangin’ at the bar for awhile, if he hopes to sample even a fraction of the tequilas on offer at Texicali. More than 30 different versions of the agave liquor can be found behind the bar, including some fairly legendary spirits such as the artisanal Olmeca Altos Planta. To keep costs within a budget, plan on visiting on Thursday when tequila shots are $5 or on Friday when a flight of three tequilas runs $15. If you prefer a mixed drink, Wednesdays are your day to party at Texicali. Margaritas are just $6 all
shrimp, grilled salmon and crispy mahi. These tacos are a bargain even at the “full” price of $3.95, and are avail-
able in various combos with quesadillas, enchiladas, and sliders. Or come any day between 5 and 7 p.m. when happy hour prices rule— tacos for $1.95, plus sliders, guacamole, yucca fries, and fresh salsa at about half price. Not all the fun at Texicali is found in a shot glass or rolled in a tortilla. The club sponsors live music several times a week, usually with no cover, either on the indoor stage or on the huge patio (inherited from The Saloon, former occupant of this prime NC Music Factory site). And on the final Tuesday of the month come by for a night of salsa dancing with a free lesson and dance party. Texicali is open Monday through Friday for lunch (great specials!), and Tuesday through Saturday for dinner and late night, as well as for pre-concert libations on Sundays. CarolIna Brawl 2 SHOwCASeS PRO BOxiNG iN CHARlOTTe
2) Charlotte is a sports town. Period. if boxing is going to attract young talent, it has to come from locales other than Vegas, Jersey and Atlantic City (inside the US). why not Charlotte? Did you know Smoking Joe Frazier was a Carolinian? Smoking Joe gave Ali a run for his money in every round. 3) Carolina Brawl was concepted with the assistance (are you ready?) of Don King. love or hate the Don, he knows his sport. it makes PleNTY of sense to curate young talent in local markets and build a fan base. Maybe it’s too little, too late, but boxing is still a sport that only an elite group of athletes can compete in and contend.
No more numbers...here’s the lowdown, fight fans:
My Freedom Smokes Presents The wFnZ "The Fan" Carolina Brawl 2 5' from the ring. 10' from the ViOleNCe is their slogan.
It is, most likely, in our blood. One documentation of such, goes like this: Dur-
ing the American Revolution, General Cornwallis, experiencing staunch resistance from the citizens of Charlotte during his 1780 southern campaign, complained that the city was “a veritable hornet’s nest of rebellion.” This was publicized by proud Charlotteans, who nicknamed the city “The Hornet’s Nest.” The Charlotte Hornets have thrived here, been decimated and returned. Our point is made. we’ll now spare you more of the American history lesson and get to the subject at hand: we Charlotteans love a good fight. Some locales prefer sailing, cakewalks and quilting. But not us. Boxing, wrestling and now MMA fights are woven into our city fabric. like it or leave us (please). while boxing remains a tough sport to conquer, our local promoters have marshalled on and now, a familiar face on the Charlotte scene, “Money” Mike long (of wrestling notoriety) has a good start. His Carolina Brawl ducked heavy rains and made for a sell-out debut at Rooftop 201 at The epicenter and he has survived to bring us more of what we love—it’s wFNZ The Fan presents
Carolina Brawl 2—this time at the equally swanky club label at the NC Music Factory. we’re excited! And here’s why...
1) Boxing, as a sport, has been on the decline. experts have suggested that expansion of other sports leagues— such as the NFl, NHl, and others— provide more lucrative and alluring appeal to the physical brand of athletes that might/may have become boxers in the past. The rise of MMA (mixed martial arts) has certainly eclipsed a share of the boxing market. So any effort to keep the traditional arts alive is just fine with us.
True professional boxing—10 great fights on the card—with the top contenders in the Carolinas. it’s Tuesday Night Fights and it’s coming our way on October 14, 2014. Carolina Brawl 2 is at label Charlotte, 900 NC Music Factory Blvd. Charlotte NC 28206. Doors open at 6:30 PM. The bell rings at 7:30 PM. Prowler fans can go to CarolinaBrawl.com or click on buy tickets (the link below). Type in promo code : prowler and get 25% off on every ticket purchase (even ViP tickets...see you there!). FIGHT noTES:
Carolina Brawl 2 will be a toe-to-toe sling-fest with tough competition from all over the country including top fighters from Alabama, Philly, Virginia, Georgia and Tennessee . Fighters are fresh off cards of nationally televised fights on Showtime, UFC and Bellator Cage Matches. Stanley "The Kid" wright and Marselle "Cochise" walker both had their debut fights in July and won in a dominating manner. They both fight out of Stanley's Pro Boxing Gym here in Charlotte along
with Michael "Lean Machine" Capella who is making his debut fight on the 14th.
John "Spidey" Williams is a fast, crafty veteran who recently beat the wheels off of Mike Tyson’s top new prospect on national TV. Spidey trains at Dymes gym here in Charlotte. Rodney "ShoNuff" Wallace is a tough HWT who you will recognize from UFC.
Quinton "Q" Rankin . When we were matching up fights this guy said don't worry about calling me to OK the fight. I will fight anyone. Just get me an opponent. Who says that in this business? NOBODY. Keep your eyes on this fight. Q is ready. Lee "The Silverback" Campbell They don't call him 'Silverback" for nothing. This man is a boxing BEAST.
Jared 'The Warrior" Robinson is another top fighter that has made his way to the national platform. He comes ready to go toe-to-toe for an exciting match-up. Prowler fans—we can’t wait to see you at Club Label. Be SURE and stop by the VIP for photos with Prowler Magazine!
This is the NFL. Nothing is easy. Yet for our Carolina Panthers and management, this has
been an exceptionally trying off-season and harshly disappointing start to the 2014 NFL season. Hardships have come in the form of personnel drama with fan backlash from the decision to trade veteran Steve Smith, key lineman Jordan Gross retiring, legal troubles for Pro Bowl D End Greg “The Kracken” Hardy and wide-sweeping injuries that wiped out one of the best backfields in the NFL. Stewart, out. Williams, out. Tolbert, out. And their back-ups? Out. Our record-breaking QB Cam is playing through ankle surgery and rib injuries—even he’s not able to open up the ground game as he’s want to do. So where do you go from there? To the air, of course. And here there is hope. Our #1 draft pick Kelvin Benjamin has been outstanding. So much so that he scored an NFL Rookie of the Week award in week one of regular season play and this month an NFL Rookie of the Month title for amazing, high-flying receptions and incredible ball control. And who else is bringing down the balls? Our leading receiver—TE Greg Olsen—is steady and stellar as always. Greg Olsend got himself a game ball with six catches, two for TDs (one the game winner) in the rallying win against a tought Chicago
team. With Cam throwing accurately we do hold out hope. Now we just need to appeal to the O Line to hold up the pocket—they did a good job against Chicago. Keep her steady, guys. On the other side of the ball—where things generally go very, very well—we have begun to see some cracks. Uncharacteristic play from 2013’s NFL Defensive Play of the Year Luke Kuechly, in part, led to a crushing defeat by the Steelers in prime time. And the Baltimore Ravens trounced the Panthers, with Steve Smith “running around ya’ll boys like in a school yard” in his own words. Our defensive backs are struggling. Thomas Davis was out but returned and made his presence known against the Bears. Charles Johnson came back strong in the Bears game, leaving our stellar D line minus just one of our starting D Ends. Fans—it’s early. And we’re somehow leading our division at 3-2. So there is time and there is hope. We fans here in Carolina are fickle. We all know that the Panthers are late starters, in the seasons and in games—and with everyone’s expectations so high, it’s easy to fall short. In 2013 we were all treated to something exceptional—a team that won by willpower. There is talent galore on this Panther team, that’s for sure. But there is talent on every NFL team. When our Panthers play and physical and impose their will on the other team—that’s when we see that team we love to watch play—the Carolina Panthers that #keeppounding even when the odds are stacked against them. Kudos on a big win versus Chicago, Panthers. Keep pounding!

All Aboard: The A-Train
Standing 6’3 and weighing in at 265 lbs., Bellator MMA fighter Adrian “A-Train” Henderson is one bad man inside the cage. He holds a professional record of 5-1. (he fought on Spike TV earlier this month and lost a decision in Henderson vs. Johnson.) Outside the cage, he is kind, generous and extremely loyal to his friends and family. I sat down with A-Train to talk about fighting, family and fear. Prowler: Tell me a bit about yourself. A-Train: “I was born in Columbia, SC and was a high school wrestler. I train out of a gym called Sor. Sumrit Muay Thai in Columbia, and at Dark Side MMA in Charlotte with lead instructor, Michael Allen.”
Prowler: How did you get involved in MMA? A-Train: “I was introduced to Jiu Jitsu by my dad my senior year in high school. He was talking to me about Hoyce Gracie who was winning all these fights. Unfortunately, at the time MMA was primarily on the West Coast. As soon as a gym opened up in SC, my brother and I went there to train. I really never had any intention of fighting; I just wanted to learn Jiu Jitsu.” Prowler: What does success mean to you? A-Train: “Everything. I have sacrificed a lot to be successful in this sport: time with friends, international

HAUNTED ATTRACTIONS
A multi-attraction haunt... Scarrigan Farms (Mooresville, NC) Scarrigan Farms is a walking trail, but we won’t promise that you’ll only be walking. Crawling, sliding, and squeezing tend to have a place in the night. On average it takes 30-45 minutes to make it through. That’s IF you can make it. Despite their best efforts some of our guests can’t take the terror and "chicken out" before the trail is over. Just remember they can smell fear and they love having chicken for dinner. While just one trail over a 1/2 mile long, the trail has several distinct aspects, each one designed to further warp your already twisted mind! First is "The Funhouse". This part of the trail will have you twisting and turning while you try to prepare yourself for what will happen next. We don’t want to tell you what exactly to expect because we love the look of surprise and terror in your eyes, but our blood-thirsty clowns love it more. In order escape "The Funhouse", slide down to the depths of Scarrigan Farms using our fully loaded, double-barrel shotgun slide. 3-D MAZE Now, if you make it this far, you will reach their "3-D Maze". After donning the very stylish 3-D glasses, you’ll enter into a world that blends fantasy and reality, but not in a good way… Your eyes will begin to play tricks on you and you won’t know if what you’re seeing is real. Just don’t touch anything, because you never know if that something can touch back. Continues on next page

The way out of Scarrigan Farms beings with your trip on the "Tragic Bus". Hopefully the bus driver remembers to take his medication. If not, good luck to you. If you make it off the bus you’ll finally be at the "Corn Maze". There are the lucky few who find their way quickly, but don’t count on it. Between the maze, and some friends of ours that have been sighted in the corn, and hate people being there, you’ll find it nothing less than difficult. http://www.scarriganfarms.com

THE GREAT PUMPKIN FESTIVAL AT CAROWINDS Family Friendly Halloween Fun
Enter this amazing attraction along a dark, winding, dirt road, surrounded by haunted woods. If you are brave, roll down your windows to take in the night’s stale air… but Beware! From the moment you arrive on Kersey Valley property you are fair game to each and every haunted creature residing here. You will encounter special effects of light, sound, smell, claustrophobia, dense atmosphere, air pressure and may come in contact with liquid substances. Leave your best pair of sneaks at home, but bring a extra pair of undies! There are many attractions: Geister Haus This 1930s farm house is shrouded in legend and ghost stories. Since opening our doors in 1985, there have been many strange occurrences in this little unassuming home. This 2014 season, it’s not who waits, but what waits within the walls. The house is POSSESSED. Come inside as
the house lurches to life, breathing and contorting before your eyes. Watch-out as the walls attack, the rooms seems to shift and disorient you. No one is safe inside GEISTER HAUS…so, get out if you can. Terror Trams These chariots of death await your arrival, to convey you to your most final destination. Travel through the cover of darkness, and hold on tight, as the trams take on additional passengers… something crashes around you in the woods. Creatures from another world…another time. Fright Lights Creatures “from the sky” have crashlanded in the woods and the small mining community of Gold Hill needs your help to locate the missing miners. Choose your leader, as your group will only receive one light. Stay together, because you never know where they wait within the woods. Blood Feast This royal Vampiric family resides within the Kersey Valley Burial Ground. Outcasts among their brethren, they withdraw into the festering tombs until nightfall. Enter their dining hall and join the blood feast. Their hunger is insatiable. Incarna Luna Thrashing and changing BEFORE YOUR EYES this monster, part wolf, part man, breaks loose and ravages the neighborhood. Chaos ensues, house fires rage, but this beast still remains. Kersey Valley Asylum A once renowned mental hospital, Kersey Valley Asylum has fallen to ruin. Still in operation, this hospital is host to Dr. William S. Archer who performs grotesque, physical and psychological, experiments on his patients. Tormented and lost, the patients wander the corridors and strike out at anything or anyone they come across. All who enter will be subjected to Dr. Archer’s Psychological experiments and you’ll be lucky to escape his physical tortures as well. And there’s more. See the website: www.spookywoods.com Parking $5 per car, $10 per van, $20 per bus, broom sticks are still free.
THE HAUNTED MIll

FROM CLUB OWNER TO TELLER OF TALES
Michael G. Plumides, Jr., is a native of Charlotte, North Carolina. His interest in ďŹ lmmaking began as a young boy when his father, Michael Sr. produced the sexploitation cult classic, Night of the Cat in 1973, shot entirely on location in his home town. But Plumides' entertainment career began in music: first as a college radio deejay at the award-winning radio station, WUSC where he was Promotions Director, interviewing the likes of Dave Mustaine of Megadeth and Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead. Plumides then went into concert promotion at the 4808 Club where he hosted legendary rock acts such as Danzig, Widespread Panic, The Black Crowes, Bad Brains, Soundgarden, Corrosion of Conformity, Social Distortion, and L.A. Guns. The club was closed by authorities after the infamous "GWAR Obscenity Bust" of 1990 which was covered by MTV, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Associated Press, establishing Plumides as a sort of folk hero, fighting for the cause against censorship.
Afterward, Plumides promoted concerts in five states, also managing and booking bands throughout the Southeast in the early 90's. He graduated law school in 1996. But Plumides yearned to become a serious writer. In 2009, he wrote Kill the Music, a memoir describing his experiences in college radio at the University of South Carolina, and concert promotion in Charlotte during the moral hysteria of the late eighties at the pinnacle of the Parent Music Resource Center and music censorship hearings. Kill the Music received rave reviews through the Southeast and Plumides was voted "Best Writer of 2010" by Charlotte Magazine. Plumides wrote for the lauded Blurt Magazine and embarked on a "Gonzo
Journalist" jaunt for four years, covering events in the Southeast, interviewing icon Jeff Bridges for the Democratic National Convention, also covering events like Bonnaroo and Music Midtown in Atlanta - reviewing performances by The Flaming Lips, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Clutch, and Wolfmother. Michael was introduced to Morgan Creek President, David Robinson, by Mark Bryan, guitarist for Hootie and the Blowfish in late 2010. Plumides was seeking a possible film deal for his book and inadvertently became a consultant on pop culture, more specifically, the horror genre, for the indie giant. By 2011, Plumides had produced a project that he created, wrote, and co-directed: A TV pilot entitled, Ghost Trek: The Kinsey Report, which won of
"Best Comedy" at Fright Night Film Fest and an Addy Award in 2011, and "Viewer's Choice" at Mad Monster Party horror convention and released in webisodes on Dread Central in 2012. Plumides completed an allnew episode in 2013 entitled, Ghost Trek: Goomba Body Snatchers Mortuary Lockdown (and Panel show) now available on Indieflix, Vimeo, and now YouTube for Chromecast users. Plumides was the only director to work with the late Gia Allemand outside of reality television. Gia, the Bachelor and Bachelor Pad star who died of a tragic suicide August 14, 2013, makes her final appearance in Ghost Trek: Goomba Body Snatchers Mortuary Lockdown. Plumides worked closely with Gia, playing "Harvey Goldman" opposite Allemand as her boss, and had planned for her to return in the role of "Shawna Leibowitz" for the feature film. A bizarre factoid was, Gia's character makes reference to suicide in Ghost Trek: The Kinsey Report after discovering photos of her boyfriend, Zeke Wallace, cheating on her with a Russian model. Plumides also wrote a reference to suicide in her biography on the ghosttrektv.com website over two years ago, which he felt was "haunting". Plumides has written a feature film as well as four other episodes. and plans to have his film entitled, Ghost Trek: Confederate Ghouls in production by late 2014 he's still looking for financing. The feature project was rated at #2 in the "Horror" category on Amazon Studios in 2013 - running a close second to the green lit Zombies vs. Gladiators penned by Clive Barker. Plumides pulled the film from Amazon Studios to pursue another offer instead and is
Barker's Nightbreed television series. Michael has been working closely with Barker and Mark Miller at Seraphim Films (Hellraiser, Jacqueline Ess)to bring Barker's cult masterpiece to television for Morgan Creek, creating the TV show, penning the pitch bible and writing the first four episodes, as well as the series' first season description. Plumides continues to design and develop creature effects for the project with Face Off's Tate Steinsiek (Seasons One & Five on Syfy) now officially in development.
in negotiations with financiers but financing is slow moving. Coincidentally, Plumides acquired the distribution deal for the Nightbreed: Director's Cut - the coveted, fully-restored feature film. Shout!Factory will be distributed through their horror subsidiary, Scream Factory to be released October 28th for home video. The announcement was made at San Diego Comic Con 2013 and was one of the highlights of the event. Plumides is now under contract with Morgan Creek Productions on Clive
From Arrow in the Head: "Let's hope that things move quickly for a "Nightbreed" TV series because there isn't a doubt in my mind that it could be a hit for whichever network wants to pick it up. I love NIGHTBREED and am stoked for the Director's Cut release from Scream Factory, and a new TV series would be the icing on the cake." I have worked closely with Clive and Mark for several years now, developing a story line and new characters for Morgan Creek's Nightbreed TV series. I also found
From Io9: The ambitious series doesn't have a home yet, but we'd love to see Nightbreed come back. Plumides and Barker both seem to think that Nightbreed was ahead of its time, and if you look at the late-night lineup of genre dramas, we could easily see a monster series fitting in nicely between the vampire and zombie shows. We only hope that the makeup is just as insane and elaborate as it was in the original film. From Rue Morgue Magazine: It doesn’t hurt that Plumides is also a long-time fan of the film and its universe. “I made every effort to stay true to Barker’s vision for the purists without deviating wholly from the source material – even consulting not just Clive and Mark but Barker experts and aficionados; people that live and breath Barker’s work. Also, I will say, it feels American, but the British accent shines through. We hope to partner with a network that understands and appreciates the “monsters of Midian” as we do, but also recognizes the viability of the Nightbreed property.”
a distribution hub for Nightbreed: Director's Cut with Shout Factory! - I was introduced to them by Jim Shapiro and Tim League at Alamo Drafthouse/Drafthouse Films. With the Director's Cut doing fantastic pre-order numbers, Jacqueline Ess in development, the Hellraiser reboot with the Weinsteins eminent, Abarat in development, plus the Hellraiser, Next Testament, and Nightbreed comics on Boom doing well, the timing for a Nightbreed TV series is perfect. For scary Halloween fun go to www.youtube.com/ghosttrektv for all of my videos.
Michael G. Plumides, Jr. is a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor Degree in Government and International Studies. He holds a Doctorate in Jurisprudence from John Marshall Law School in Atlanta. Plumides is also an actor and has appeared in films alongside such icons as Michael Rooker.
