CLUMBER HOUSE

CLUMBER HOUSE AND ITS SURROUNDING BUILDINGS ARE MORE ESTABLISHED WITHIN THE PARK, WITH MOST VISITORS CENTRING THEIR VISIT IN THIS AREA. WITH A VAST CAR PARK AND MOST WALKS STARTING FROM HERE, THIS IS WHERE THE PARKS MAIN ATTRACTIONS ARE LOCATED. THESE INCLUDE: - CAFE - DISCOVERY CENTRE - GARDENS - GIFT SHOP - DOG FRIENDLY CAFE - WALKS - CRICKET PAVILION AND PITCH - TEA ROOMS SITE MAP BY AUTHOR - SCALE 1:5000

6

HARDWICK VILLAGE

HARDWICK VILLAGE IS A SMALL SETTLEMENT LOCATED WITHIN CLUMBER PARK, USED MOSTLY FOR FARMLAND. DESPITE THE VOLUME OF BUILDINGS WITHIN THE VILLAGE, THERE IS NO PULL FACTOR TO BRING VISITORS TO THIS AREA OF CLUMBER PARK. SOME OF THE PARKS WALKS HEAD TOWARDS THE VILLAGE, BUT THESE USUALLY FOLLOW THE PROFILE OF CLUMBER LAKE. ROAD NETWORKS AND PATHS ARE ESTABLISHED HERE, ALONG WITH EXISTING CAR PARKS, SO THE ROOTS ARE SET FOR GUESTS TO BE ABLE TO EXPLORE THE VILLAGE FURTHER.

HARDWICK WOODYARD SITUATED WITHIN HARDWICK VILLAGE, THE WOODYARD WAS CREATED IN THE 1850S ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE MODEL VILLAGE FOR THE 5TH DUKES ESTATE WORKERS. IT HOUSED A POST OFFICE AND A GENERAL STORE, VILLAGE HALL AND TWO SCHOOLS, ONE FOR THE VILLAGE CHILDREN. THE SECOND SCHOOL WAS A BOARDING SCHOOL CALLED THE CHANTRY WHICH WAS FOR THE BOYS WHO SANG IN THE CHAPEL CHOIR. THE VILLAGE SCHOOL WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE IN 1932. THE WOODYARD CURRENTLY HOUSES THE HARDWICK INN WHICH IS A SMALL SOCIAL SPACE AND PUB THAT SERVES THE SMALL COMMUNITY. THE REST OF THE WOODYARD SITS EMPTY AND DERELICT. LOCATED WITHIN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO CLUMBER LAKE AND SITUATED ON A GRADIENT DOWN TO THE LAKES SIDE, THIS SITE OFFERS UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES UNLIKE ANY OTHER EXISTING BUILDING IN CLUMBER PARK.

IMMERSE VERB

1. DIP OR SUBMERGE IN A LIQUID. 2. TO INVOLVE ONESELF DEEPLY IN A PARTICULAR ACTIVITY.

18

THE BRIEF FOR THIS PROJECT WAS TO REIMAGINE THE EXISTING CLUMBER PARK SITE, ENCOURAGING MILLENNIALS TO VISIT THE PARK FOR MANY YEARS TO COME. IT IS IMPORTANT TO ENSURE GUESTS WILL CONTINUE TO VISIT THE PARK FROM A SUSTAINABLE AND ECONOMIC POINT OF VIEW, SUPPORTING THE NATIONAL TRUST’S CAUSE WELL INTO THE FUTURE. AS CLUMBER LAKE IS A HUGE PULL TO THE PARK DUE TO ITS SHEER SIZE, WATER HAS ALWAYS BEEN A KEY PART OF THE SITES HISTORY, DATING BACK TO THE DUKES OF NEWCASTLE WHO USED TO OWN CLUMBER HOUSE. LOOKING INTO HOW WATER COULD BE INTRODUCED INTO A NEW FUNCTION, I ALSO WANTED TO REFLECT THE CALMING NATURE THAT THE PARK HAS TO OFFER FOR THOSE WHO ENJOY THE OUTDOORS. BEING OUTSIDE HELPS THOSE TO RELAX AND UNWIND, SO TO CREATE A SPACE THAT COULD ADD TO THIS SET TONE WAS REALLY IMPORTANT. I DECIDED TO DESIGN A SPA WHICH INCORPORATED THE WATER ELEMENT ALIKE TO THE LAKE AND THE ATMOSPHERE THAT THE PARK ALREADY CREATES FOR ITS GUESTS. PICKING A SITE NEAR THE LAKE WAS ESSENTIAL SO THAT THE WATER CONNECTION WAS CLEAR FOR GUESTS. AS THE MAIN CLUMBER HOUSE SITE ALREADY HAS A CLEAR FOCUS, MY ATTENTION MOVED TO HARDWICK VILLAGE WHICH CAN OFFER MORE PRIVACY AND PEACE FOR VISITING SPA GUESTS TO RELAX. FLOWING WATER GAVE THIS PROJECT A CLEAR NARRATIVE AS THE SOUND OF RUNNING WATER CAN AID RELAXATION. HARDWICK WOODYARD IS LOCATED NEXT TO CLUMBER LAKE ON A GRADIENT, GIVING A REAL OPPORTUNITY TO ALLOW WATER TO FLOW THROUGH PART OF MY PROJECT.

19

SITE PLAN BY AUTHOR - SCALE 1:5000

20

LOCATED WITHIN CLUMBER PARK’S HARDWICK VILLAGE, HARDWICK WOODYARD IS A DERELICT LARGE STORAGE HOUSE WITH A POSSIBLE HISTORY OF A JOINERS WORKSHOP. THE SITE HAS A HISTORY INVOLVING WATER AS SUGGESTED BY A CORRODED OLD WATER PUMP FOUND WITHIN ONE OF THE THREE EXISTING COURTYARDS. THE OLD WOODYARD IS LOCATED ON A GRADIENT WITH VIEWS ACROSS CLUMBER LAKE AND THE SURROUNDING WOODLAND. WITH THESE FEATURES IN MIND, A SPA HAS BEEN DESIGNED USING ONLY PART OF ONE DERELICT COURTYARD, RETAINING MUCH OF THE EXISTING BUILDING AS IT IS. WATER HAS A SIGNIFICANCE WITHIN THIS LOCATION, THEREFORE THIS PART OF THE AREA’S HERITAGE IS BEING NODDED TO. THE FORM OF THE NEW STRUCTURE PLAYS WITH LEVELS AND SUBTERRANEAN AS IT INTERACTS WITH THE SITES NATURAL GRADIENT. COMPLIMENTING THE LANDSCAPE HAS FORMED A HUGE PART OF THIS PROJECT AS THE NATIONAL TRUST STANDS TO PROTECT AND CELEBRATE NATURE.

21

A TIMBER WALKWAY LEADS GUESTS FROM THE EXISTING CAR PARK TO THE NEW ENTRANCE, LOCATED WITHIN THE EXISTING HARDWICK WOODYARD BUILDING. A GLASS FACADE ENSURES IT IS VISIBLE AND WELCOMING, SETTING THE NARRATIVE FOR THE REST OF THE SPA. A TIMBER CLAD CORRIDOR SITS WITHIN THE EXISTING SITE, HIDDEN FROM THE EXTERIOR, AND LEADS THROUGH INTO THE CHANGING AREAS. A DDA LIFT IS LOCATED OPPOSITE AND ALLOWS DISABLED GUESTS TO EASILY ACCESS ALL FLOORS FROM HERE. ALL PASSAGEWAYS ARE ALSO WIDE ENOUGH TO ENSURE ANY WHEELCHAIRS CAN BE EASILY MANOEUVRED THROUGHOUT THE SPACE.

ENTRANCE VISUAL BY AUTHOR THIS VISUAL COMMUNICATES WHAT THE APPROACH TO THE ENTRANCE AND RECEPTION AREA WOULD BE LIKE FOR ONCOMING GUESTS. A SIMPLE WALKWAY LEADS FROM THE EXISTING CAR PARK TO THE FRONT GLASS FACADE. THE ENTRANCE IS CLEARLY VISIBLE FROM BOTH THE CAR PARK AS WELL AS THE COURTYARD ENTRANCE. THE WARMTH OF THE TIMBER BATTENS CONTRASTS WITH THE MINIMALIST CONCRETE CLADDING, CREATING AN INTERESTING SPACE AGAINST THE EXISTING BRICK STRUCTURE.

24

AN OFFICE SPACE HAS BEEN CREATED WITHIN THE RECEPTION/ENTRANCE, HOWEVER IN CONTRAST TO THE REST OF THIS SPACE, THIS WILL BE ENCLOSED TO HIDE ANY MESS AND RETAIN PRIVACY FOR ANY EMPLOYEES. GLASS EXPANSE ENTRANCE ALLOWS LOTS OF NATURAL LIGHTING INTO THE RECEPTION SPACE, ALSO ENSURING IT FEELS WELCOMING FOR GUESTS.

MICROCEMENT EXTERIOR TO THE NEW ENTRANCE, CONTRASTING WITH THE BRICK FACADE OF THE EXISTING WOODYARD. EXISTING STRUCTURE IS BEING PRESERVED, KEEPING ITS CHARM AND HISTORY IN TACT. THE NEW CONTEMPORARY EXTENSION AND ENTRANCE WILL CONTRAST WITH THE OLD, CREATING AN INTERESTING APPROACH.

NEW BUILDING CUTS THROUGH THE EXISTING BUT REMAINS HIDDEN BENEATH THE PRESERVED EXISTING ROOF STRUCTURE. TIMBER BATTEN PATHWAY WILL LEAD TO MAIN ENTRANCE FROM THE CAR PARK - LINKING THE EXTERIOR MATERIALS TO THE INTERIOR.

THIS FLOOR HOUSES ALL THE MAIN SPA FACILITIES THAT ARE OFFERED TO GUESTS. A TIMBER BATTEN CLAD STAIRCASE LEADS YOU DOWN FROM THE CHANGING ROOMS, ONLOOKING THE ALSO TIMBER CLAD SALT AND PLUNGE POOL. OTHER FACILITIES WITHIN THIS FLOOR INCLUDE: A SAUNA, SALT INHALATION ROOM, FACIAL TREATMENT ROOM AND MASSAGE TREATMENT ROOM. A SMALL WATER CHANNEL TRICKLES FROM THE SALT WATER POOL DOWN THE STAIRS INTO THE LARGER SALT POOL LOCATED ON -2 FLOOR. THIS WATER PROMOTES CALM BUT ALSO GIVES A DIRECTION OF FLOW WITHIN THE SPACE, ENCOURAGING GUESTS TO MOVE BETWEEN LEVELS.

31

THIS VISUAL SHOWS THE SPA FACILITIES ON LEVEL -1 FROM THE PERSPECTIVE AT THE TOP OF THE STAIRCASE. LIGHT IS IN ABUNDANCE WITHIN THIS SPACE TO ENSURE THAT IT IS CALMING FOR GUESTS AS WELL AS ALLOWING THEM TO STILL ENJOY THE NATURAL WORLD OUTSIDE. WATER TRICKLES GENTLY THROUGH THIS SPACE, ALLOWING THE SOUND OF FLOWING WATER TO BE HEARD WITHIN THIS WHOLE SPACE, PROMOTING RELAXATION AND REJUVENATION.

TIMBER BATTENS LINE THE PLUNGE POOL AND BRASS ACCENTS ARE USED WITHIN THE METAL WORK CREATING A CONTEMPORARY LOOK. TIMBER HAS BEEN USED TO CREATE WARMTH AND AN ALL IMPORTANT CONNECTION WITH THE EXTERNAL LANDSCAPE, THIS CAN BE SEEN WITHIN ALL JOINERY PIECES THROUGHOUT THE DESIGN ON ALL FLOORS.

33

THIS SECOND VISUAL OF THE MAIN SPA FLOOR IS FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE BOTTOM STEP OF THE STAIRCASE UP TO THE GROUND FLOOR. THE MATERIALITY OF THIS FLOOR CAN REALLY BE SEEN WITHIN THIS VISUAL, THE WARMTH OF THE TIMBER BATTENING AGAINST THE MOSTLY CONCRETE STRUCTURE. THE GLASS FACADE OF THE SALT INHALATION ROOM CAN BE SEEN WITH THE TIMBER SEATING, LINKING IT TO THE SURROUNDING SPACE.

THIS LEVEL OF IMMERSE OFFERS A LARGER SALT POOL FOR GUESTS TO ENJOY WHICH FEELS AT ONE WITH THE EXTERNAL CONTEXT, DUE TO THE LAND BEING SUBTERRANEAN. A CAFE OCCUPIES THE MOST SPACE WITHIN THIS FLOOR, OFFERING GUESTS DRINKS AND LIGHT FOOD BETWEEN TREATMENTS AND RELAXING. THE CAFE IS ALSO OPEN FOR GENERAL PARK GUESTS AS THERE IS NO OTHER CAFE LOCATED WITHIN HARDWICK VILLAGE. TAKEAWAYS WILL BE OFFERED TO WALKERS WHO WISH TO TAKE THEIR PURCHASES WITH THEM. SOFT SEATING IS OFFERED BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE, WITH A SHELTERED COURTYARD POSITIONED SO THAT VIES OF CLUMBER LAKE CAN STILL BE OBTAINED. A TIMBER WALKWAY JOINS THE NEW COURTYARD TO THE EXISTING PUBLIC FOOTPATH THAT FOLLOWS THE PROFILE OF CLUMBER LAKE.

39

LARGE SALT WATER POOL VISUAL BY AUTHOR

40

LARGE SALT WATER POOL MODEL BY AUTHOR THIS VISUAL SHOWS THE LARGE SALT WATER POOL LOCATED ON LEVEL -2. A LOW WALL SEPARATES THE POOL FROM SOME SOFT SEATING WHICH IS FOR ANY GUESTS WISHING TO USE THE CAFE FACILITIES OR ALTERNATIVELY ANY SPA GUESTS WISHING TO TAKE A SEAT TO RELAX. AS THE VISUAL SHOWS, THE POOL HAS A STRONG RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OUTSIDE CONTEXT AS THE VIEWS CAN BE VERY CLEARLY SEEN, AS WELL AS THE POOL ITSELF BEING AT THE SAME LEVEL AS THE GROUND. THIS REMINDS GUESTS WHERE THEY ARE, PROMOTING FURTHER RELAXATION AND A CONNECTION WITH THE ENVIRONMENT AROUND THEM. THE AREA IS FLOODED WITH PLENTY OF NATURAL LIGHTING, MAKING THIS THE IDEAL SPOT TO SIT AND ENJOY A MORNING COFFEE.

41

COFFEE BAR VISUAL BY AUTHOR THIS LARGE VISUAL SHOWS THE SET UP OF THE COFFEE BAR FOR BOTH IN HOUSE GUESTS AND EXTERNAL PARK GUESTS TO GRAB ANY NEEDED DRINKS OR SMALL BITES OF FOOD. THE MATERIALITY OF THE CAFE SPACE REFLECTS THE USE OF TIMBER AND CONCRETE USED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE SPA, WITH THE BRASS ACCENT FRAMING THE BOTTOM OF THE COFFEE BAR. THE DESIGN FOLLOWS A MINIMALISTIC AND CONTEMPORARY FEEL, RETAINING CLEAN LINEAR LINES. THE USE OF A MODERN COFFEE MACHINE WHICH IS BUILT WITHIN THE JOINERY ALLOWS THE REST OF THE BAR TO STAY AS CLEAR AS POSSIBLE, RESISTING CLUTTER. THE SKYLIGHT ABOVE THE BAR ALLOWS THE SPACE TO BENEFIT FROM NATURAL LIGHTING, AS WELL AS THE ADDITION OF SPOTLIGHTS AND WALL LIGHTS TO CREATE A FOCUS FOR CUSTOMERS FINDING THEIR WAY THROUGH THE SPACE. THIS AS A RESULT AIDS BOTH MOVEMENT AND FLOW.

42

WATER CHANNEL VISUAL BY AUTHOR THE WATER ELEMENT’S END JOURNEY IS SHOWN WITHIN THIS SMALLER VISUAL AS IT TRICKLES INTO THE LARGE SALT WATER POOL FROM LEVEL -1. THE WATER FLOWS DOWN FOLLOWING THE PROFILE OF THE STAIRCASE SHOWN. THE TIMBER BATTENS LINING THE STEPS AIM TO MIMIC THE LINEAR NATURE OF THE TREES EXTERNALLY, AS WELL AS ADDING MORE PRIVACY FOR GUESTS WALKING DOWN. THE NATURAL LIGHTING WITHIN THIS FLOOR CAUSES INTERESTING SHADOWS TO BE CAST THROUGH THE BATTENS.

THIS VISUAL SHOWS THE SOUTH ELEVATION OF THE SPA THAT CAN BE SEEN FROM THE PATH SURROUNDING CLUMBER LAKE. THE MAIN SALT WATER POOL FEELS LEVEL TO THE GROUND, MAKING AN ESTABLISHED CONNECTION TO THE OUTSIDE ENVIRONMENT. THE EXISTING WOODYARD CAN BE SEEN AT THE TOP OF THE SITES GRADIENT, SITTING PROMINENTLY SO GUESTS ARE CONSTANTLY REMINDED OF THE WOODYARDS HERITAGE.

EXTERNAL SOUTH VISUAL BY AUTHOR

46

EXTERNAL COURTYARD VISUAL BY AUTHOR THE COURTYARD AREA IS SITUATED TO THE EAST ELEVATION AND IS ACCESSIBLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC FROM THE PATH AROUND CLUMBER PARK. THIS AREA IS SHELTERED DUE TO THE OVERLAPPING FORMS OF THE BUILDING, YET STILL ALLOWS GUESTS TO ENJOY THE OUTDOOR ELEMENTS AND VIEWS. AVAILABLE TO SIT IN AND FOR TAKEAWAYS, THIS ENTRANCE ALLOWS VISITORS OF HARDWICK VILLAGE TO GRAB A DRINK AND A SMALL BITE TO EAT WITHOUT DISTURBING THE MAIN SPA FACILITIES.

TIMBER BATTENS HAVE BEEN A CONSISTENT MATERIAL USED THROUGHOUT THE DESIGN, BOTH INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY TO HELP THE NEW EXTENSION BLEND WITH THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT. THE NORTH ELEVATION SHOWS WHAT CAN BE SEEN BY ARRIVING GUESTS AS THEY PULL INTO THE EXISTING CAR PARK, GREETED BY THE LARGE OPEN COURTYARD AND THE SMALL PART OF THE EXPOSED RECEPTION SPACE.

55

EXPLODED ISOMETRIC BY AUTHOR - NOT TO SCALE

56

AS THE ADJACENT ISOMETRIC DRAWING SHOWS, ONLY LIMITED AMOUNT OF THE EXISTING BUILDING IS BEING TOUCHED, RETAINING AS MUCH OF THE HERITAGE AS POSSIBLE. ADDITIONALLY, THE CORRIDOR THAT IS CONCEALED BY THE EXISTING SLATE ROOF IS ALSO VISIBLE, CONNECTING THE ENTRANCE/RECEPTION TO THE CHANGING FACILITIES, PLAYING WITH A SENSE OF SCALE AS GUESTS WONDER THROUGH. THE CONNECTION WITH THE EXISTING LANDSCAPE IS ALSO ILLUSTRATED WITHIN THIS DRAWING AS THE LEVELS OF THE LAND CAN BE SEEN ALONG WITH THE TWO SUBTERRANEAN SPACES (BOTH POOLS).

57

58

CONNECTION WITH THE LAND

THIS SITE MODEL SHOWS HOW THE FORM OF THE FINAL DESIGN RELATES TO THE SURROUNDING EXTERNAL CONTEXT. UTILISING THE GRADIENT OF THE LAND IS THE CORE OF THE PROJECT AS THE FORM OF THE BUILDING MIRRORS THE LEVELS OF THE LANDSCAPE. THE VARIOUS LEVELS HELP TO CREATE GOOD FLOW AND MOVEMENT WITHIN THE SPACES AND EXTERNALLY. THE SUBTERRANEAN LAND USED FOR BOTH SWIMMING POOLS CANNOT BE SEEN EXTERNALLY, GIVING THE ILLUSION THAT THE GUEST IS AT GROUND LEVEL AND AT ONE WITH THE CONTEXT.

59

THIS MODEL SHOWS THE CONNECTION THAT THE NEW STRUCTURE HAS WITH THE GRADIENT OF THE LAND AS THIS PORTRAYS THE NEGATIVE IMPRINT LEFT BEHIND. THE LEVELS USED WITHIN THE SPA CAN BE SEEN WITHIN THE FULL GRADIENT AS THE SUBTERRANEAN LEVELS CREATED FOR THE POOLS ARE REPRESENTED.

60

CARLO SCARPA

NEGATIVE IMPRINT

EARLIER RESEARCH AND FOCUS ON CARLO SCARPA’S USE OF NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE LEVELS INSPIRED THIS CONCEPT THROUGHOUT WHICH CAN BE SEEN IN THE ADJACENT SITE MODEL. USING THE NATURAL LEVELS OF THE LAND AND CARVING IN ADDITIONAL LEVELS CREATED INTERESTING SPACES AS WELL AS HELPING TO PROVIDE A CONNECTION TO THE LAND, WHICH IS OF PARTICULAR IMPORTANCE TO THE NATIONAL TRUST.

FOCUS PLACE ISOMETRIC BY AUTHOR - NOT TO SCALE

76

THIS ISOMETRIC DRAWING DISPLAYS ONLY THE FOCUS AREA, LEVEL -1, SHOWING HOW THE WHOLE FLOOR WORKS SPATIALLY. THE RENDER GIVES AN IDEA ON HOW THE MATERIALITY WORKS THROUGH OUT THE SPACE, AND HOW GUESTS ARE ABLE TO EASILY MOVE BETWEEN SPA FACILITIES. THE WATER ELEMENT LOCATION CAN CLEARLY BE SEEN BEFORE IT FLOWS DOWN THE STAIRS INTO THE LOWEST LEVEL.

77

THE USE OF TIMBER BATTENS WRAPPING AROUND THE SALT WATER POOL AND PLUNGE POOL CREATES AN INTERESTING SPACE FOR GUESTS TO EXPLORE, ESPECIALLY DUE TO ITS LOCATION AT THE BOTTOM OF THE ENTERING STAIRCASE. THE LINEAR FORMS ARE CONSISTENT WITH THE REST OF THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR, ENSURING A COHESIVE LOOK AND ATMOSPHERE. A SKYLIGHT WILL BE POSITIONED ABOVE THE BACK WALL TO FURTHER ILLUMINATE IT THROUGHOUT THE DAY, WHICH SHOULD ALSO REFLECT ON THE SURFACE OF THE WATER. THE MICROCEMENT STAIRS DOWN INTO THE POOL AND THE WALLS OF THE PLUNGE POOL GIVE THE IMPRESSION OF ONE WHOLE FORM, MAKING THE SPACE FEEL CLEAN AND RELAXING. THIS ALSO ADDS TO THE EFFECT OF THE BATTENS AS IT ALLOWS THEM TO BE THE MAIN FEATURE OF THE SPACE.

78

MATERIALITY

THROUGHOUT THE DURATION OF THE DAY, THE NATURAL LIGHTING THAT ENTERS THIS FLOOR WILL CAST SHADOWS THROUGH THE TIMBER BATTENS THAT FOLLOW THE PROFILE OF THE STAIRS. THE BATTENS GIVE A GLIMPSE TO THE FLOOR BELOW FROM GROUND FLOOR LEVEL, DRAWING THE EYE AND GUEST TO EXPLORE WHAT THE -1 FLOOR HAS TO OFFER. THE LIGHTING CREATES A REFLECTIVE ATMOSPHERE WHICH BENEFITS THE OVERALL FEEL OF THE SPA. THE LINEAR NATURE OF THE TIMBER BATTENS CREATES A COHESIVE FEEL WITH THE SITES SURROUNDING CONTEXT, MIMICKING THE WOODLAND SURROUNDING THIS AREA OF CLUMBER PARK. THE BATTENS ALLOW A SENSE OF PRIVACY WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE VIEW OUT TO THE LAKE AS WELL AS THE NATURAL LIGHT.

THE IDEA WAS TO CREATE A FORM OF CAVE OR QUARRY LIKE STRUCTURE. WORKING WITH THE NATURAL SURROUNDINGS THE BATH ROOMS LAY BELOW A GRASS ROOF STRUCTURE HALF BURIED INTO THE HILLSIDE. THE THERME VALS IS BUILT FROM LAYER UPON LAYER OF LOCALLY QUARRIED VALSER QUARZITE SLABS. THIS STONE BECAME THE DRIVING INSPIRATION FOR THE DESIGN, AND IS USED WITH GREAT DIGNITY AND RESPECT.

CARLO SCARPA

SUBTERRANEAN

CARLO SCARPA IS BEST KNOWN FOR HIS INSTINCTIVE APPROACH TO MATERIALS, COMBINING TIMEHONOURED CRAFTS WITH MODERN MANUFACTURING PROCESSES. SCARPA’S ATTENTION TO DETAIL IS ALMOST UNMATCHED AMONG MODERN ARCHITECTS. HIS APPRECIATION OF CRAFT OFTEN LED HIM TO REVEL IN THE SMALLEST OF DETAILS. SCARPA’S ARCHITECTURE MANAGES TO RESPECT THE OLD AND HISTORIC WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY INTRODUCING NEW AND MODERN DESIGN DETAILS. IN THIS RESPECT HIS WORK IS DEEPLY SENSITIVE TO THE CHANGES OF TIME, ALL TAKING SHAPE IN A CAREFUL SELECTION AND COMBINATION OF MATERIALS.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT - FALLING WATER YEAR: 1939 LOCATION: PENNSYLVANIA

WATER

WRIGHT’S ADMIRATION FOR JAPANESE ARCHITECTURE WAS IMPORTANT IN HIS INSPIRATION FOR THIS HOUSE, ALONG WITH MOST OF HIS WORK. JUST LIKE IN JAPANESE ARCHITECTURE, WRIGHT WANTED TO CREATE HARMONY BETWEEN MAN AND NATURE, AND HIS INTEGRATION OF THE HOUSE WITH THE WATERFALL WAS SUCCESSFUL IN DOING SO. WRIGHT REVOLVED THE DESIGN OF THE HOUSE AROUND THE FIREPLACE, THE HEARTH OF THE HOME WHICH HE CONSIDERED TO BE THE GATHERING PLACE FOR THE FAMILY. HERE A ROCK CUTS INTO THE FIREPLACE, PHYSICALLY BRINGING IN THE WATERFALL INTO THE HOUSE.

USING THE INCLUDED PRECEDENT STUDIES, SKETCH AND CONCEPT MODEL EXPERIMENTS CREATED VARIATIONS OF THEIR SUCCESSFUL FORMS. IT WAS IMPORTANT TO BARE THE SITE CONTEXT IN MIND THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS. THESE ARE INITIAL FORMS CREATED THAT ARE LATER DEVELOPED, FURTHER THINKING ABOUT SPACE AND THE CHOSEN FUNCTION.

THE NARRATIVE FOR THIS PROJECT STEMS FROM THESE THREE MAIN PRECEDENTS: PETER ZUMTHOR, CARLO SCARPA AND FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT. EACH PRECEDENT STUDY DISPLAYS ITS OWN UNIQUE ASPECT WHICH WILL MERGE TO FORM THE OVERALL NARRATIVE FOR THE PROPOSED SPA. FOCUSING ON FORM, ATMOSPHERE AND CONTEXT; THEY CAN ALL BE APPLIED TO THE SITE AT HARDWICK WOODYARD DUE TO THE SITES CONTEXT WITHIN THE GRADIENT AND ADJACENT TO CLUMBER LAKE. THESE KEY WORDS WILL CREATE AN IMMERSIVE SPA FOR NATIONAL TRUST GUESTS TO LEISURELY USE WHILST ALSO APPRECIATING THE NATURE STILL THAT SURROUNDS THE SITE.

SWOT ANALYSIS

STRENGTHS

WEAKNESSES

- SYMMETRICAL BUILDING - SITUATED ON A GRADIENT - DERELICT BUILDING - ESTABLISHED TARGET MARKET WHICH CAN ONLY BE ADDED TO - TRANQUIL ENVIRONMENT - GOOD PUBLIC ACCESS TO FOOTPATHS - VIEWS OVER THE LAKE - STRONG HERITAGE

- SET AWAY FROM THE MAIN BUILDINGS AT CLUMBER PARK - LACK OF PUBLIC ACCESS - NO CURRENT FOCUS IN LOCATION - AGES OF CURRENT TARGET AUDIENCE - LISTED PARK AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION - LACK OF CLEAR DIRECTION AND FLOW WITHIN THE PARK

OPPORTUNITIES

THREATS

- USE OF THE LAND GRADIENT - USE OF VAST SURROUNDING LAND - USE OF WATER FROM CLUMBER LAKE - REFERENCE TO BUILDING’S HERITAGE - USE OF BUILDING’S COURTYARDS - CREATION OF NEW FOCAL POINT WITHIN THE SITE

- PAYMENT UPON ENTRY - POSSIBLE FLOODING - DAMP ENVIRONMENT - POSSIBLE LANDSLIDES - WEAK BUILDING STRUCTURES - LISTED TREES, BUILDINGS AND LAND - PROTECTED AREAS

95

HAVING DECIDED TO ONLY USE A SMALL FRAGMENT OF THE WOODYARDS FIRST COURTYARD TO RETAIN AS MUCH OF THE HERITAGE AS POSSIBLE. THESE SKETCHES EXPLAIN THE NEXT FORM OF PROCESSING. THE ENTRANCE OF THE PROJECT WOULD BE FROM THE TOP OF THE GRADIENT, ENSURING THE EXISTING CAR PARK COULD BE UTILISED. ADDITIONALLY, THE MOVEMENT THIS WOULD CREATE THROUGH THE SPACE WOULD ALSO MIMIC THE NATURAL FLOW OF WATER AS IF IT WAS FLOWING INTO CLUMBER LAKE. THE BELOW SKETCHES DISPLAY EXPERIMENTS FOR THIS ENTRANCE AREA AND HOW THIS COULD CONNECT TO THE NEW EXTENSION OF THE PROJECT.

96

WITH A PROPOSED FORM STARTING TO TAKE SHAPE. IT WAS IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THE PROPORTIONS AND SCALE WERE CORRECT. THESE SKETCH EXPERIMENTS ALL MAKE SLIGHT CHANGES TO THE INITIAL FORM IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER, FROM EXPANDING SOME OF THE LEVELS OR EVEN CREATING DOUBLE HEIGHT SPACES TO UTILISE THE MAXIMUM SPACE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

97

PROPOSAL 1

THIS FORM PROPOSAL PLAYS WITH VARIOUS SCALES, AS EACH LEVEL HAS A DIFFERENT HEIGHT AND OVERALL WIDTH. LEVELS 1 AND 2 HAVE SUBTERRANEAN ELEMENTS, COMPARED TO THE LOWEST FORM THAT SITS FLUSH WITH THE SITE GROUND. AN INTERESTING ELEVATION IS CREATED DUE TO THE IMMERSED FORMS INTO THE SITES GRADIENT.

FORM PROPOSAL 2 TOOK ITS MAIN INSPIRATION FROM FRANK LLOYD WRIGHTS ‘FALLING WATER’. THE NARROW LINEAR FORMS OVERLAP MORE THAN THE OTHER PROPOSALS, CREATING AN INTERESTING OVERALL FORM. HOWEVER, SPATIALLY THESE THIN FORMS MAY NOT PROVIDE ENOUGH SPACE REQUIRED FOR THE SPA FACILITIES.

RESEARCHING OTHER SPAS LOCAL TO CLUMBER PARK AND THEIR OFFERINGS TO GUESTS HAVE ALLOWED A NICHE TO BE DISCOVERED. IN ORDER TO DIFFER FROM WHAT IS ALREADY COVERED LOCALLY, A SALT WATER SPA WILL ATTRACT GUESTS AS MINIMAL OTHER SPAS ALLOW GUESTS TO ENJOY THIS SPECIFIC EXPERIENCE.

PROS AND CONS BELOW EXPLORES THE PROS AND CONS OF SALT WATER BOTH PRACTICALLY, PHYSICALLY AND FROM A DESIGN PERSPECTIVE. THESE FINDINGS MAY CHANGE HOW THE DESIGN IS APPROACHED TO POSSIBLY MINIMISE ANY DISADVANTAGES.

+

-

- GENTLE ON SKIN AND EYES - EASY TO MAINTAIN - SOFTER WATER - NATURAL THERAPY FOR SORE AND DAMAGED MUSCLES - PROMOTES NATURAL HEALING - LESS CHLORINATED WATER - LESS MAINTENANCE TIME - AID SLEEP - RELIEF FROM RESPIRATORY AILMENTS - RELIEF FROM INFLAMMATORY SKIN CONDITIONS

- LARGER INITIAL INVESTMENT - MORE SPECIALIST TECHNICIANS - CAN CAUSE EROSION TO POOL MATERIALS - REQUIRES ENERGY FOR THE FILTER - SALT IS A DRYING AGENT - SALT WATER CAN MAKE YOUR SWIMSUIT FADE

LAYOUT EXPERIMENTS

THE LAYOUT EXPERIMENT SKETCHES AND MODELLING HAVE LED TO THIS FORM TO BE THE FINALISED INTERNAL LAYOUT. IT PROVED CHALLENGING TO ENSURE THAT THE ACCESSIBLE LIFT WAS POSITIONED IN THE BEST PLACE, ENSURING NO COMPROMISES WERE MADE FOR ANY VISITING GUESTS. ENSURING THE CORRECT ERGONOMICS ARE MET IN EVERY SPACE ON EVERY FLOOR IS DIFFICULT BUT THIS SMALL MODEL WAS ESSENTIAL IN CONFIRMING THAT THE MOVEMENT WORKS WITHIN THE SPACE.

STUDIO 304 - SUNKEN BATH PROJECT YEAR - 2016 LOCATION - HACKNEY, LONDON. STUDIO 304 HAS ADDED A GLAZED BATHROOM TO A LONDON FLAT, FEATURING A SUNKEN BATHTUB THAT OFFERS JAPANESE-STYLE BATHING TO ITS OCCUPANTS. TO ALLOW FOR THIS, THE TEAM SEPARATED THE TOILET AND SHOWER ROOM FROM THE BATHTUB ON A LOWER LEVEL. GLASS WALLS AND ROOF ENCLOSE THIS BATHING AREA, OFFERING VIEWS TO THE BAMBOO, PLANTING AND GRAVEL THAT MAKE UP THE PROPERTY'S PRIVATE GARDEN. LARCH SLATS COVER THE BATHROOM'S GLASS ROOF, AS WELL AS THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE FLAT, TO MAINTAIN PRIVACY. THE MATERIALITY WITHIN THIS PROJECT PROMOTES A TRANQUIL AND CALMING SENSE WHICH ALSO SUCCESSFULLY BRINGS THE OUTSIDE IN. THE USE OF MICRO CEMENT AND WARM TIMBER SLATS WORKS WELL AS IT FOLLOWS THE LINEAR FORM OF THE EXTENSION CREATED WHILST ALSO MAINTAINING PRIVACY.

104

MATERIALITY

+

-

- TIMBER IS EASY TO STAIN TO ACHIEVE THE REQUIRED COLOUR AND TONE. - ECO FRIENDLY AS IT IS A RENEWABLE SOURCE. - EASY TO REPAIR AS THE INDIVIDUAL BATTENS CAN BE REPLACED IF REQUIRED. - CAN BE TREATED TO IMPROVE ITS PROPERTIES, SUCH AS FIRE TREATMENT AND WATERPROOFING. - DURABLE - ENERGY EFFICIENT AND CAN HELP WITH INSULATION

- THE BATTENS WILL WEATHER OVER TIME EXTERNALLY, WHICH CAN BE A DISADVANTAGE IF THIS ISN’T THE LOOK INTENDED. - COSTLY TO INSTALL - NEEDS REGULAR MAINTENANCE TO RETAIN REQUIRED LOOK. - CAN SHRINK AND EXPAND DEPENDING ON THE TEMPERATURE

+

-

- 100% WATERPROOF - VERY DURABLE - CHEAPER THAN CONCRETE - ANTI SCRATCH AND STAIN - DOES NOT REQUIRE HEAVY MACHINERY TO APPLY - CAN BE USED INTERNALLY AND EXTERNALLY - CAN BE ANTI SLIP WITHIN SUITABLE SETTINGS - 3MM THICK, THEREFORE NOT AFFECTING THE STRUCTURAL LOAD OF THE BUILDING - ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY AS IT USES ALL NATURAL PRODUCTS

- A PROTECTIVE SEALANT MUST BE APPLIED AFTER IT IS LAID TO PREVENT STAINING. - HAS TO BE APPLIED IN COATS, 3 COATS WOULD BE NEEDED FOR OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE. - A SMOOTH BASE IS NEEDED FOR THE MICROCEMENT TO BOND TO.

WATER ELEMENT

THE WATER ELEMENT OF THE PROJECT LINKS BACK TO ONE OF THE INITIAL PRECEDENTS, FALLING WATER BY FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT. THE SOUND OF MOVING WATER PROMOTES RELAXATION AND GIVES A TRANQUIL ATMOSPHERE. ADDITIONALLY, CLUMBER LAKE IS VERY PROMINENT TO THE SITE'S LOCATION, THEREFORE A WATER ELEMENT WITHIN THE SPACE LINKS WITH THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT.

106

EXTERNAL MATERIALS

THE EXISTING COURTYARD OF THE SITE ENABLES IT TO STILL FEEL LIKE AN EXCLUSIVE SPACE HOWEVER.

PHOTOS OF CONCEPT LIGHT MODELS TO CREATE DESIRED ATMOSPHERE

THE SUN PATH DIAGRAM ABOVE CONCLUDES THAT THE SOUTH EAST FACADE OF THE SEES THE MOST SUNLIGHT DURING THE DAY. THIS IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE AS IT HAS HELPED TO DETERMINE THE LOCATION OF THE MAJORITY OF WINDOWS. DUE TO THE SITE'S NATURAL LOCATION, IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAINTAIN AND MAXIMISE THE VIEWS OUT TO THE ORGANIC LANDSCAPE. THE MAIN VIEWS ARE TO THE SOUTH OF THE SITE SO THESE FACADES MUST BE TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF. ADDITIONALLY, LIGHTING IS KEY TO ENHANCING A STAIRCASE, CREATING INTRIGUE TO EXPLORE THE ADDITIONAL FLOORS WITHIN THE BUILDING. CONSIDERATION INTO MAINTAINING PRIVACY WITHIN BOTH CHANGING ROOMS AND TREATMENT ROOMS IS KEY, LINEAR SLIT INTERVENTIONS ENABLE THIS ALONG WITH STILL ALLOWING NATURAL LIGHTING TO ENTER THE SPACES.
