HELLO, Welcome to issue two! Well this certainly has been a lot of fun to create, from a seven hour shoot styling six brands with twelve models to persuading Eren to use a caviar manicure on Abbie’s eyebrows (see page 6) there was never a dull moment! I honestly can’t believe it’s nearly been a year since issue one, so much has happened..I moved to London, got a job in the flapship Topshop on Oxford Circus, styled Canadian comedian Katherine Ryan for 8 out of 10 cats and Never Mind The Buzzcocks and now I’m working with the beautiful Rosie Fortescue on her street style blog (see page 10). This issue is dedicated to fashion. I’ve picked the hottest new brands from graphic sweats to jewellery. Fashion Photographers set for big things this year. My amazingly talented make-up artist everyone is going to be fighting for. Beautiful new SS13 trends & so much more. If you have any comments, feedback or want to get involved in issue three you can tweet me coco_summers or e-mail me info@charlottesummers.co.uk.

BLOoDY MARY METAL Lucy Tomatoes/ 26/ Cornwall www.bloodymarymetal.com

When did you first know you wanted to design jewellery? - I’ve always been interested in jewellery design, and almost did an apprenticeship with someone in London back in 2009 but it wasn’t the right time... Then in 2011 when Phil Orton spoke to me about apprenticing with him, I jumped at the chance and it all happened from there! What was the first piece of jewellery you remember being given and by whom? - Hmm, my brother used to buy me leather/ beaded bracelets for birthdays- I always wore them til they broke! But I think the first significant piece was a necklace from my mum and dad for my 18th. It’s very delicate and has 3 little diamonds in it... I actually haven’t really worn it (I tend to break delicate things!) but I still have it, and I plan on using the metal and re-setting the diamonds to make something I can wear more often... I wear rings a lot more than I do necklaces, so maybe I’ll do that. How is a collection born? - I think that depends on the collection... For me, so far, baring in mind I’ve only designed two collections, it’s about finding an idea, or an image that sparks a feeling and then researching it thoroughly... The new BMM collection, Arcane Love, came predominantly from an Auguste Rodin quote; “I invent nothing, I rediscover” which then lead me to looking into symbols and signs from our past... Runes, degrees of witchcraft and blazes carved into trees by travellers. What is your creative process? - Well, I start with one idea or concept in the centre of a piece of paper and then use everything I can find to help me research ideas around it... Photos, the internet, bookshops, in particular, are amazing! Once there’s a general direction for the pieces you’re working on, sketches begin to take shape, and often I’ll just start carving at a block of wax- I work better in 3D I think! Once the pieces are designed I go back to the initial research to make the “story” of the piece... Sometimes there’s actual meaning behind the piece, the runes of the new collection for example come with pre-defined meaning. But sometimes there’s a story that I can create about the piece. Either way, I like the idea that if you’re given a piece of jewellery, or are buying some for yourself or someone else, there can be an extra little feeling with it, a little extra reason why that piece in particular resonates with you. What’s the best advice anyone’s ever given you? - Don’t let the past dictate the future. Do everything you can today, to get you where you want to be in the future and enjoy the journey. Oh, and don’t ignore your gut feeling. Ever. Plans for the future? - Well, this is going to be a big year for BMM with the launch of Arcane Love, and several other exciting projects in the pipelines... I’m trying not to jump too far ahead and am concentrating on doing everything I can right now, to ensure that BMM continues to flourish and grow.

TRADITIONAL HEART Kathryn Howarth/27/Sheffield http://www.etsy.com/shop/traditionalheart

When did you first know you wanted to design jewellery? - Always wanted to design jewellery and loved making friendship bracelets as a child, but especially because I couldn’t find what I wanted in the shops. If I want something then I want it now!! What inspires your work? - I’m inspired by fashion magazines, music and poetry. I’m a romantic at heart and like to think of all my pieces as a token of love. What did you dream you’d be when you grew up? - I always dreamt I’d own my own shop as a child and still hope this dream comes true. I’d love to sell my jewellery with vintage clothes and furniture. Does each piece have a muse? - I like to imagine all my pieces worn by an array of people. I sometimes base my pieces on someone specific. For example “the craft” collar was intended to be worn by Jessica Clark (the face tattooed model from Australia who tweeted me back when I asked her if she wanted one) and “the alexa” inspired by Alexa Chung’s love of all things pineappley!! I also absolutely love music and poetry and am often inspired by lyrics and verse. None of my pieces are intended to be taken too seriously though and are made for the pure love of it. What are your plans for 2013? - I’m going to be selling my jewellery at Nostalgia Traditional Tattooing in Leeds from February and hope to broaden my customer base through this. I’m also looking into making rings and the possibility of branching out into t-shirts to put my boyfriend’s amazing artistic ability to good use.

small feet big kicks! JESS (JUICE)/24/EAST LONDON www.smallfeetbigkicks.com

How did it all begin? - It began over a year ago and it started with the idea of me having too many trainers and wanting to sell them. After selling quite a few and having people always asking me where I got mine from, me and my boyfriend had the idea to start a website only for girls. As we’d hit a niche market it took off really well and here we are today! Did you always want to be in the fashion industry? - I always imagined myself in the fashion industry in some way shape or form and i’ve always been in retail, so it was just a natural transition/progression. Having a textile background I want to eventually move my way through to the more creative side of fashion. What’s your favourite pair of sneakers? - For comfort: NIKE SB TWIN PEAKS. For Appearance: NIKE AIR MAX 97 VALENTINE. For strangeness: NIKE AIR DIAMOND TURF IN RED. Are you ambitious to do even more with smallfeetbigkicks? What are your plans or dreams for this year? - I’d love for our brand to go even further. We’re always helping out with shoots for magazines and clothing brands which is nice. We recently did a project which was amazing! So I guess this year just continue to collaborate and do more in terms of advertising, getting the name out and invest time to get more stock. We’d like to open a shop but maybe in a few years. Tell us something totally unexpected about you? - I have a black mark on my eyeball from my brother sticking keys in my eye when I was six. I’m also a grade five violinist.

GLORYBIRD Danielle Bellamy/ 21/ Glasgow www.glorybird.co.uk

When did you first know you wanted to design clothes? - From the age of about 9 or 10 I always had ideas for outfits that didn’t actually exist, so I would just modify clothes I already had. It wasn’t until maybe 2 or 3 years ago when friends would ask where I’d got things that I had made for myself that I thought I could actually design clothes for other people. Who are your personal style icons? - My personal style icons include, The Olsens, Alexa Chung and Gillian Zinser. How is a collection born? - My best ideas usually come to me in the early hours of the morning and then I get up out of my bed to sketch them. They’re most likely influenced by things I’ve seen or heard throughout the day and stored somewhere in my mind subconsciously. When I look at my sketches in the morning I start to think of variations or other pieces that would tie in well with them. The littlest things can spark up a new idea, from a colour i’ve seen or even someones attitude. What’s your favourite item of clothing that you own? - Ooh that’s a tricky one! I have amassed quite large collection of coats and beanies and I love them all! But my favourite item of clothing is actually a pair of vintage Levi’s jeans I got from Oxfam on Byres Road in the west end of Glasgow, purely because they are so comfortable. Plans for Glorybird in the future? - In the future I want for GloryBird to remain a fairly small business because I want to find more time to take more custom orders. It makes me happy to be able to help people develop their own visions and make them something that’s perfect for them and that they’ll love until they’ve literally worn it out.

EREN SAYGILIER MAKE-UP ARTIST/18/ EDINBURGH

When did you first know you wanted to be a make-up artist? - I’ve always been the typical girl that loves her make-up & hair. When I was 12 I was always doing my friends make-up and it must have started from there. My mums got a hair and beauty salon so I’ve always grown up in that environment and I’ve seen transformations taking place that really inspired me. I started to work in the salon and after seeing how happy the women were that walked out I wanted to make people feel good about themselves, but in my own way. What’s the best advice anyone’s ever given you? - The best advice I’ve ever been given is from my mum. She always says don’t do something that doesn’t make you happy and I’ve stuck with that through relationships, career choices, literally everything. When you’re doing something that makes you happy you’ll do it to the best of your ability. Who would you love to work with? - Oooh! This is a tricky question. If I could do make-up on anyone in the world it would have to be... Kim Kardashian! She’s stunning! Favourite brand? - Definitely MAC. They have such an amazing range of colours and are constantly bringing out new products. They always have what I’m looking for! Plans for 2013? - I feel like 2013 will definitely be my year. I will constantly be doing shoots to expand my portfolio and I have several weddings booked for the summer. I’m also hoping to have my website and business cards organised to promote my services. Normally people specialise in one area but I’m proud to say I can cover all aspects from bridal make-up, editorial make-up, session styling, male grooming, body painting, make-up for black skin tone and theatrical make-up. I am so excited to start my journey in the amazing world of make-up artistry. Let the fun begin!

EXTRAGGED JENNIFER GARDINER & ELLEN VICTORIA WRIGHT extragged.bigcartel.com When did you first know you wanted to design clothes? - ELLEN- I’ve always wanted to design. Anything and everything. Clothes are just another creative outlet. I’ve always dabbled in customising clothing ever since school! Starting from the modification with my school uniform and most of the time ending in detention, then i went to London College of Art and then my dress sense and self-expression moved to a whole new level. This was a very experimental time for me. I also developed the skills to transfer creativity into something other than a thought so my designs really started coming to life. JEN- Very similar to Ellen when it comes to experimenting with clothes, I’ve always been creative and expressed my personality through my clothing style. Then whilst I was working on set as an actress/model, I took interest in the fashion and styling side. That’s when I properly got into customising my own clothes for shoots. I pictured my work as I went along and that’s how I got the job as a designer for Boy London! Who are your personal style icons? - ELLEN - DAVID BOWIE. That guy can do NO wrong. He’s the only man that can get away with men and women both worshiping his dress sense, wanting to look like him and wanting to be with him. Love the androgynous look. He has moved with the times but always stayed ahead of them too. That’s where I always aim my style too… slightly ahead of everyone else’s. JEN- The Olsen Twins. I love their innocent front, but the ‘dumpster-chic’ trash look. JELLEN – We both adore Kate Moss too! How is a collection born? - ELLEN - I don’t know if Jen agrees, but I see it being born out of a common ground between two unique girls who know what they like, what they want in life and what they don’t. It was nice finally meeting someone else who doesn’t give a damn about what other people think and just live life as they choose. Extragged was born from all our ambitions, interests, and attitudes all rolled into one. Its formed a larger than life version of ourselves. Extragged isn’t for everyone. It’s there as a creative outlet for us, we aim to set trends, not follow them. Hopefully people will join us and feel free to do the same. JEN- Yep, for sure. I would say Extragged is my alter ego to some extent. What is your creative process? JELLEN - Get excited about something! ANYTHING. A film, music , a conversation (normally between us both) and then channel that inspiration and spark into something AMAZING! This has happened throughout the development of EXTRAGGED. Its all sparked from the appreciation and love of something else. Then we push that into our work. Its an addictive process! What’s in store for extragged this year? - JELLEN - I’d like to say BIG THINGS.. but the truth is who knows? All we know is that we have some HUGE projects to push Extragged forward. A new website, a new range and even a couple of films! On top of that we have a HOT photographic duo (JC PHOTOGRAPHY) following and documenting our every step for EXTRAGGED fans to enjoy!

GRACE SĂ NCHEZ PHOTOGRAPHER

www.behance.net/Gracyphotography

When did you first get into photography? - I first got into photography during my BA where I experimented with studio lighting. I realized then that I truly loved it. What inspires your work? - Fashion, I love to photograph iconic things from our time. If you could work with any photographer who would it be? - Definitely David LaChapelle, he is so creative and it would be a lot of fun. Film or digital? - Mainly digital because of the instant results, although sometimes is nice to use film to get that natural grainy vintage effect. Studio or location? - Both, I like experimenting with different scenarios indoors and out. Plans for 2013? - Participating in more creative projects involving fashion photo shoots and hopefully exhibiting more of my work in 151.

GEORGIA MAY CROSS PHOTOGRAPHER www.gmc-photography.com

When did you know you wanted to be a photographer? - I’ve always loved photography and when I was younger it was always my idea of a dream job. It was after I took my A levels and was considering going to uni that I actually started thinking about doing it as a career. What was the first shoot you ever did? - My sister’s and I would always be dressing up and messing about with the camera any chance we got. However, the first proper shoot was when my sister’s boyfriend Dan Cox lent me his DSLR at the time. After 10 minutes of shooting, I knew I needed one for myself! Favourite style of photography? - I love unique shoots, anything quirky or interesting. I love working on projects or doing shoots with a theme. Then again, I also love spontaneous shoots with no planning at all. Tbh, there’s not a lot I don’t enjoy! Whats’ the best advice you’ve received? -There’s so much good advice thrown around berwick, it’s hard not to listen to it. However, I think in the field of photography it’s always good to remember to take things as they come. A lot of things don’t go to plan when shooting, however you’ve just got to remember that’s just how it is. Most of the best shoots have been when something happens out of my control, family portrait shoots are always unpredictable but I love it! Tell us something totally unexpected about you? -Before looking at photography as a career, I could always imagine myself as an architect. Plans for GMC this year? - Hopefully I would like to get my studio set up in Berwick at some point. I’m also looking to upgrade my camera equipment in the next few months.
