welcome

One Musical Family A Symphony Orchestra can feel like a large extended family at times. Instruments with similar characteristics — strings, woodwind, brass, percussion — work in harmony with their instrument relatives — and like branches on a tree, the whole becomes much greater than the sum of its parts. This spring, every CMS fourth grade student will be introduced to the various musical families that make up the Charlotte Symphony through our “One Musical Family” program. This includes professionals both onstage and off who work together to bring music to our community, as well as the broader family of composers, musical genres, and cultures that comprise our musical world. Tonight, we’re thrilled to have a very important member of the CSO family back on the podium: Music Director Christopher Warren-Green. So whether you’re joining us for Holst and Elgar or Mozart and Wirén, we’re so glad that you’ve decided to invite us into your home. Thank you for your support and for being an integral part of our extended family. Enjoy the concert!

MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT Calin Ovidiu Lupanu, Concertmaster Born in Timisoara, Romania, Calin completed his undergraduate studies at the Music Conservatory in Bucharest and earned his Master’s Degree from Northern Illinois University before joining the Charlotte Symphony in 2003. In 2016, Calin Lupanu and his wife, CSO violinist Monica Boboc, founded the non-profit ensemble and series, Chamber Music for All, committed to providing high quality chamber music performances and educational projects, accessible to both younger audiences as well as experienced listeners. When asked what he considers to be the best part about being Concertmaster, Calin said: “The responsibility that comes with the job. Personally, I love it. I embrace pressure. I also love interacting with my colleagues, getting to play solos, and working with great conductors and soloists.” For more information about Charlotte Symphony musicians, visit charlottesymphony.org.

about us

The Charlotte Symphony is committed to delivering exceptional musical experiences that connect and strengthen our community. A cornerstone of Charlotte’s arts and cultural landscape, the Charlotte Symphony is a full-time orchestra that performs more than 130 concerts annually and supports bold and robust community engagement and education efforts. Founded in 1932, and led by internationally celebrated Music Director Christopher Warren-Green, we are the most longstanding performing arts organization in the region. Today we continue as a 21st century orchestra, responsive to and engaged in the narrative of our people. We employ music as a tool for building community and even as an agent of change. The Charlotte Symphony is a key piece of the area's cultural fabric, using the power of music in its many forms, to unite and inspire our community.

Core programming runs September to May and includes Classical, Pops, and Family series, plus special events from movies in concert to the annual Magic of Christmas concerts. Summer Pops at Symphony Park rounds out each season.

We perform everywhere from community parks and schools to breweries, places of worship, and senior care centers. We are deeply committed to the notion that music, accessible to all and experienced in many forms, enriches our community. We creatively strive toward being an industry leader in imaginative, relevant programming on and off the stage. Project Harmony serves more than 150 students in critical-need areas with free after-school lessons in music and life skills. Inspired by the El Sistema youth development program of Venezuela, Project Harmony expanded to four locations in 2018-19. We value diversity and intentionally work to break down barriers to arts access. Our Music For All program affords members of our community holding EBT cards admission to any Symphony experience at $1 per ticket. We buck industry trends by offering opportunities to women and to musicians, composers, and conductors of color. We serve our area’s youngest musicians through two diverse youth orchestras, and aim for these ensembles to reflect our wider community. The Charlotte Symphony is a key piece of the area's cultural fabric, using the power of music in its many forms, to entertain, educate, unite, and inspire.

notes SIR EDWARD

ELGAR

born: June 2, 1857 in Broadheath, United Kingdom died: February 23, 1934 in Worcester, United Kingdom

Serenade for Strings in E minor, Op. 20 (1892) premiere: July 21, 1896 in Antwerp, Belgium

Edward Elgar began composing his Serenade for Strings in March of 1892. By May of that year, Elgar had completed a piano duet arrangement of the work, dedicating the score to “Braut” (the composer’s nickname for his wife, Alice). Elgar further noted, “Braut helped a great deal to make these little tunes. Signed EE.” Elgar submitted the Serenade to the London publisher Novello, who rejected the work, offering the following explanation: “We have given your ‘Serenade’ our attention, and think it is very good. We find however that this class of music is practically unsaleable, and we therefore regret to say that we do not see our way to make you an offer for it.” Breitkopf, the distinguished German Throughout his life, Elgar maintained publishing firm, subsequently a profound affection for the published Elgar’s Serenade. In fact, Serenade, often referring to this this constituted the first full score of early work as his favorite. an Elgar composition to appear in print. Elgar’s background as a violinist allowed him to write compelling and effective music for strings. He described the Serenade – with tongue in cheek – as “really stringy in effect.” I. Allegro piacevole — After a brief introduction by the violas, the violins sing the opening movement’s lilting ascending and descending principal melody. The key shifts from E minor to E major for the radiant central episode. A reprise of the opening section concludes the first movement. II. Larghetto — The central slow-tempo movement opens with the first violins (echoed by the second violins) introducing a yearning motif. From here to the conclusion, the Larghetto radiates lyrical beauty. In the final measures, Elgar creates beguiling effects with pizzicato and muted bowed strings, both unison and divided. III. Allegretto — Instead of the typical rapid-tempo finale, Elgar provides a flowing Allegretto in 12/8 time, based upon a pastoral flowing melody. Echoes of the opening movement precede the serene closing measures. 9

notes SIR WILLIAM

WALTON born: March 29, 1902, Oldham, United Kingdom died: March 8, 1983, Ischia, Italy

Two Pieces for Strings from Henry V (1944) premiere: November 22, 1944 in London (film release)

The 1944 cinematic adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Henry V, starring its director, Laurence Olivier, was made at a time when the outcome of World War II was still very much in doubt. Shakespeare’s tale of the remarkable victory of the English over the French at Agincourt served as a rallying cry for the citizens of Great Britain and their troops. One of the treasures of Olivier’s Henry V is the soundtrack by English composer William Walton. The importance of Walton’s score to the success of the film was widely recognized, and Olivier later called it “the most wonderful score I’ve ever heard on a film.” Walton, however, was unsure of the value of film music heard without the film it was meant to accompany. He said, “Film music is not good film music if it can be used for any other purpose.” An exception was made for two brief excerpts from Walton’s score for Henry V, both arranged for the strings of the orchestra.

A still from Olivier’s Henry V (© Two Cities Films)

Laurence Olivier said of Walton’s score: “I’ve always said that if it weren’t for the music I don’t think Henry V would have been a success.” Other Olivier/Walton Shakespeare collaborations include As You Like It (1936), Hamlet (1948), and Richard III (1955).

The first, a Passacaglia on the “Death of Falstaff”, accompanies the description of the passing of the rotund knight, Sir John Falstaff, heartbroken over the rejection by his friend, Prince Hal (now, King Henry V). The second excerpt, “Touch Her Soft Lips and Part,” provides the soundtrack for the moment when the English soldiers bid farewell to their beloveds, as they leave for France.

notes GUSTAV

HOLST

born: September 21, 1874, Cheltenham, United Kingdom died: May 25, 1934, London, United Kingdom

St Paul’s Suite in C Major, Op. 29, No. 2 (1913) premiere: 1913 in Hammersmith, London

Gustav Holst began teaching at the St. Paul’s Girls’ School in London in 1903, eventually becoming the school’s Director of Music, a position he held for the remainder of his life. Holst completed his St. Paul’s Suite in 1913, a year before starting work on The Planets. Originally, Holst wrote wind parts for the Suite, “in order to give everyone something to do.” But when the Suite was finally published, it was in its now-familiar version for string orchestra. The charming St. Paul’s Suite reflects Holst’s love for English folk music. The rich and varied string writing is a constant source of beauty and pleasure. I. Jig: Vivace — The opening Jig is a lively dance, alternating 6/8 and 9/8 meters. In the final measures, Holst further quickens the tempo, sprinting to an exhilarating close. II. Ostinato: Presto — Muted second violins immediately present the energetic, repeated ostinato figure, soon accompanying a lovely melody initially played by the solo first violin. This lyrical movement finally resolves to the pianissimo closing bars.

Holst completed his St. Paul’s Suite in a soundproof room, constructed specially for him in the school’s new wing. Holst treasured the quiet and solitude the room afforded him, and he wrote many of his compositions there, including The Planets.

III. Intermezzo: Andante con moto — The Intermezzo opens in triple meter and imparts an atmosphere of exotic mystery (Andante con moto). A vigorous, rustic episode in 2/4 time (Vivace) provides striking contrast. The Intermezzo concludes with a final reprise of the opening episode (Adagio).

IV. Finale (“The Dargason”): Allegro — A string arrangement of the final movement of Holst’s Suite No. 2 for Military Band in F Major (1911), the Finale is a fantasia on the folk tune, “The Dargason.” Later, Holst introduces the folk song “Greensleeves,” and magically intertwines it with “The Dargason.” A fortissimo chord provides the final exclamation point. 11
