Welcome!
At the Charlotte Symphony, we are always seeking new ways to deepen the concert experience — inviting you not just to listen, but to feel and engage with music in transformative ways. Become Ocean embodies this spirit of exploration.
In partnership with Blumenthal Arts, we are bringing John Luther Adams’s Pulitzer Prize-winning composition to life as a fully immersive experience, surrounding you with waves of sound and shifting light, truly capturing the “become” in Become Ocean . More than a concert, this is an opportunity to step inside the music, drift with its currents, and embrace a moment of reflection.
We’re grateful to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation for their generous support in making this ambitious project a reality, and to Blumenthal Arts for their collaboration in pushing the boundaries of what a symphonic experience can be. We also extend our thanks to the N.C. Aquarium Society, whose special exhibits will further connect us to the oceans and deepen our understanding of the world Become Ocean evokes.
And finally, thank you — for taking this leap with us. Whether this is your first time with the Charlotte Symphony, or one of many, we’re delighted to share this experience with you.

Yaniv Dinur
guest conductor
Coming to the end of a highly acclaimed tenure as Assistant, Associate, then Resident Conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony, Yaniv Dinur has just signed a five-year renewal contract as Music Director of the New Bedford Symphony (MA). The League of American Orchestras honored the Symphony in 2021 by inviting them to be one of the orchestras to perform at the League’s conference that year. Mr. Dinur is consistently lauded for his bold and engaging programming, insightful interpretations, and exceptional ability to connect with audiences.
Yaniv Dinur made his conducting debut at the age of 19 with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, which led to multiple return engagements. Following his European debut, he was invited to perform with the Israel Camerata in Jerusalem, making him the youngest conductor ever to conduct a professional orchestra in Israel. Since then, he has conducted orchestras around the world, including the Israel Philharmonic, Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, Portugal Symphony Orchestra, Sofia Festival Orchestra/Bulgaria, Solisti di Perugia, State Orchestra of St. Petersburg, Torino Philharmonic, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. Broadcast live on Israeli radio, he was the principal conductor of the Jerusalem Symphony’s Young Artists Competition from 2003 to 2010.
North American guest conducting engagements include the symphonies of Houston (multiple times), Detroit, San Diego (multiple times), Fort Worth, Sarasota (multiple times), Edmonton (Canada), New World (Miami), San Antonio, Tulsa, and the Louisiana Philharmonic. Festival appearances include multiple appearances at Round Top (Texas), Peninsula (Wisconsin), and Sewanee (Tennessee).
Named the 2019 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Fellow (the largest award for conductors in the U.S.), Mr. Dinur was also recipient of 2016 and 2017 Solti Foundation Career Grants. Other awards include Second Prize at the International Eduardo Mata 2009 Conducting
Conductor Bio
Competition in Mexico City; the Yuri Ahronovitch First Prize at the 2005 Aviv Conducting Competition in Israel; as well as grants from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation and the Zubin Mehta Scholarship Endowment. More recently he was named by the Milwaukee Business Journal as one of the city’s most impressive young leaders, currently making a positive difference in Milwaukee.
Yaniv Dinur is also an accomplished pianist and a passionate music educator, who is committed to exposing new audiences to classical music. He often gives pre-concert talks and lectures in which he incorporates live demonstrations on the piano, aiming to reveal surprising connections between pieces, composers, and eras. He also created a series of short, sometimes humorous YouTube videos that give a deeper look into musical pieces of all genres.
Mr. Dinur has worked closely with such world-class conductors as Michael Tilson Thomas, the late Kurt Masur, Jorma Panula, and the late Lorin Maazel; soloists with whom he has collaborated include Itzhak Perlman, Yefim Bronfman, Vadim Guzman, Inon Barnatan, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, and Karen Gomyo. He holds a Doctorate in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance, where he was a student of Kenneth Kiesler.
Born in Jerusalem, Yaniv Dinur began studying the piano at the age of six with his aunt, Olga Shachar, and later with Prof. Alexander Tamir, Tatiana Alexanderov, Mark Dukelsky, an Edna Golandsky. At the age of 16, he began to study conducting with Dr. Evgeny Zirlin. While still in high school, Mr. Dinur began his formal studies with Dr. Zirlin at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. After graduating from the Jerusalem Academy, he studied privately with conductor Mendi Rodan.

John Luther Adams composer
For John Luther Adams, music is a lifelong search for home—an invitation to slow down, pay attention, and remember our place within the larger community of life on earth.
Living for almost 40 years in northern Alaska, JLA discovered a unique musical world grounded in space, stillness, and elemental forces. In the 1970s and into the ’80s, he worked full time as an environmental activist. But the time came when he felt compelled to dedicate himself entirely to music. He made this choice with the belief that, ultimately, music can do more than politics to change the world. Since that time, he has become one of the most widely admired composers in the world, receiving the Pulitzer Prize, a G RAMMY® Award, and many other honors.
In works such as B ecome Ocean, In the White Silence, and Canticles of the Holy Wind, Adams brings the sense of wonder that we feel outdoors into the concert hall. And in outdoor works such as Inuksuit and Sila: The Breath of the World, he employs music as a way to reclaim our connections with place, wherever we may be.
A deep concern for the state of the earth and the future of humanity drives Adams to continue composing. As he puts it: “If we can imagine a culture and a society in which we each feel more deeply responsible for our own place in the world, then we just may be able to bring that culture and that society into being.”
Since leaving Alaska, JLA and his wife Cynthia have made their home in the deserts of Mexico, Chile, and the southwestern United States.
Become Ocean (2013)
Commissioned by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra
PREMIERE: June 20, 2013 at Benaroya Hall in Seattle
Approximate performance time is 45 minutes.
If you stop and think about the oceanic dimension of music, there’s this implication of immersion. We came from the ocean, and we’re going back to the ocean, right? We’re made up mostly of water, and life on earth first emerged from the seas. And with the melting of the polar ice caps and the rising sea levels, we may become ocean sooner than we imagine.
Eventually we begin to realize that we’re part of something much larger than ourselves. Become Ocean embraces this idea, but gets its title from something much more personal for me. Back in the late ’70s, John Cage wrote a mesostic poem called “Many Happy Returns,” in honor of his dear friend — also my mentor and friend — Lou Harrison. He compares Lou’s music to a river in delta, with all these different influences and currents, coming together in a big beautiful sweep of music. And in the last line of the poem, Cage writes, “Listening to it, we become ocean.” I’ve always been struck by what a beautiful image that is.
So now, a little history: some time ago, I was commissioned to compose a piece for the Seattle Chamber Players. Then a few years later, the Seattle Symphony and their music director Ludovic Morlot approached me, and asked if I would be interested in composing something for the Symphony. Part of Ludo’s vision for the orchestra is to bring it into the 21st century, and to put a special emphasis on new music, so of course I was thrilled at the possibilities.
One idea that I suggested was to build on the sound world of an earlier piece I’d composed called Dark Waves, which is a 12-minute piece for large orchestra and electronic sounds. To my surprise and delight, Ludo was very interested. I was calling it “Dark Waves on steroids” and I knew early on that I wanted to take that oceanic sound and expand it into a much larger time frame. So the result was Become Ocean.

About the CSO

The Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (CSO) is one of the premier music organizations in the Southeastern United States and the oldest continuously operating symphony orchestra in the Carolinas. As Charlotte’s most active performing arts group, the CSO presents around 150 concerts each season, reaching more than 130,000 music lovers.
The 2024-25 season marks a transformative era under the dynamic leadership of newly appointed Music Director Kwamé Ryan. With 65 full-time musicians, the Symphony performs throughout the community in a variety of venues, from the Belk and Knight theaters to parks, breweries, community centers, schools, senior care centers, and places of worship. With its new mobile stage, CSO Roadshow, the Symphony extends its reach directly into neighborhoods, bringing live music to communities across the region.
Engaging with more than 10,000 students each year, the Charlotte Symphony nurtures the next generation of musicians and music lovers through its four diverse youth orchestras, in-school education programs, instrument coaching, and Project Harmony — which offers free after-school lessons in music and life skills to over 200 students in under-resourced areas.
Founded in 1932, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra continues to play a vital cultural role in the region and remains committed to the belief that music, accessible to all, enriches and unites our community.
OUR MISSION
The Charlotte Symphony uplifts, entertains, and educates the diverse communities of Charlotte-Mecklenburg and beyond through exceptional musical experiences.
OUR VISION
Reaching out through the transformative power of live music, the Charlotte Symphony will be a civic leader, reflecting and uniting our region.
