Your Charlotte Symphony Experience Whether you’re attending your first Symphony performance, or you’re a longtime subscriber, we’d like to extend to you a warm and inclusive welcome! Below is some helpful information to ensure you make the most of your Charlotte Symphony experience.

What should I wear? The Charlotte Symphony has no specific dress code. We encourage you to be comfortable and come as yourself in a style of your choice.

When do I applaud? Audiences applaud to welcome the concertmaster, conductor, and featured artists onstage. Some works may have several sections, or movements, separated by a brief silent pause. It is tradition to hold applause until the last movement. If you are unsure, wait for the conductor to face the audience. But if you feel truly inspired, do not be afraid to applaud!

Can I take photos? Certainly! We welcome and encourage you to capture and share photos before and after the concert, as well as during intermission. Feel free to use your cell phone for photography without flash during the performance, but please refrain from video or audio recording.

POEM TEXTS La Primavera (Spring) Opus 8, No. 1, in E Major original sonnet by Antonio Vivaldi I. Allegro Festive Spring has arrived, The birds salute it with their happy song. And the brooks, caressed by little Zephyrs, Flow with a sweet murmur. The sky is covered with a black mantle, And thunder, and lightning, announce a storm. When they are silent, the birds Return to sing their lovely song. II. Largo e pianissimo sempre And in the meadow, rich with flowers, To the sweet murmur of leaves and plants, The goatherd sleeps, with his faithful dog at his side. III. Danza pastorale. Spring by Nathan Nicolau Spring comes like a symphony. The woodpecker chants its rhythm, the Blackbird belts its first call: As winter’s last stand pollutes the sky, it falls mute to the hummingbird. The melody reaches the purple sea of lilacs, where the hardworking shepherd closes his eyes and smiles. “At last,” the shepherd murmurs to his dog as they join the choir.

The cuckoo finds its voice, and suddenly, The turtledove and goldfinch sing. A gentle breeze blows, But suddenly, the north wind appears. The shepherd weeps because, overhead, Lies the fierce storm, and his destiny. II. Summer by Nathan Nicolau Though your crops will be dry, let the sun’s fire burn inside you. Though the sweat on your brow will dissipate, hear the storm’s call guide you. We all face the wind’s voice to fight. Fear will seize your body. The locusts’ torrent will rip your soul, but you will stand proud because the hail may have destroyed the field, you will still be looking up in reverence.

Autumn by Nathan Nicolau More wine! More Wine! Share your glass with loved ones. More wine! More wine! Dance when night comes until the Earth weaves the crisp sky, our pillow. The cool breeze, our blanket. Tomorrow, we are off into a new world dowsed in gold and auburn, chasing away that rabid beast called Hate. With food in our hands and blessings in our hearts, the beast whimpers.

Allegro non molto Frozen and trembling in the icy snow, In the severe blast of the horrible wind, As we run, we constantly stamp our feet, And our teeth chatter in the cold. II. Largo To spend happy and quiet days near the fire, While, outside, the rain soaks hundreds. III. Allegro We walk on the ice with slow steps, And tread carefully, for fear of falling. Symphony, If we go quickly, we slip and fall to the ground. Again we run on the ice, Until it cracks and opens. We hear, from closed doors, Sirocco, Boreas, and all the winds in battle. Joseph Meyer violin

Joseph Meyer, violin, is an active soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral leader who has been garnering critical acclaim throughout the country. He has been described by the San Francisco Classical Voice as "a standout player, both technically brilliant and musically innovative". The Miami Herald has called his solo playing "exquisite," while the New Orleans TimesPicayune describes him as a "brilliant concertmaster and a superb violinist." Currently, Mr. Meyer holds positions as associate concertmaster of the Charlotte Symphony and the Colorado Music Festival, as well as guest concertmaster of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, where he has served as concertmaster and guest concertmaster for 10 years. As a former member of the Minnesota Contemporary Ensemble, he performed across the United States in critically acclaimed concerts that emphasized new music. He has also served as section violinist in the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, and Grant Park Orchestra. He has appeared as soloist with orchestras including the Milwaukee Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, New World Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, and has performed as soloist and chamber musician in Europe and the United States. He has served as guest concertmaster of orchestras including the Jacksonville and Kansas City symphonies.

As a chamber musician, Mr. Meyer has performed and recorded chamber music for contemporary composers such as John Morrison, Steven Dankner, and William Stevens, as well as for the Minnesota Contemporary Ensemble on the Innova label. As part of a joint Carnegie Hall/State Department initiative to promote cultural exchange, he has performed chamber music and has given masterclasses throughout Central Asia. He has collaborated with other notable musicians such as Vadim Gluzman, Benedetto Lupo, Paul Galbraith, Donald Weilerstein, and Frederica von Stade in chamber music performances. Mr. Meyer graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory with a master’s degree in chamber music study, where he studied under Camilla Wicks and Mark Sokol. His awards include the Jules Reiner prize as a fellow at the Tanglewood festival. He performs on a 1740 G. B. Celoniati violin.
