“ What should our designs try to achieve? We must take a critical look at the brief, make it more comprehensive. We must look beyond the narrow object and ask ourselves : What will be the ecological consequences?” Sir Ove Arup “You cannot simply put something new into a place. You have to absorb what you see around you, what exist on the land, and use that knowledge along with the contemporary thinking to interpret what you see.” Tadao Ando “ People who build their own home are tend to be very courageous. These people are curious about life. They’re thinking about what it means to live in a house, rather than just buying a commodity and making it work.” Tom Kundig

I graduated from the Catholic University of Louvain in September 2015, after the presentation of my final thesis concerning wooden housing and the Re-use of wood in Finland. This work has been achieved thanks to my studies in Finland during my master’s degree. This experience has raised several questions in my way of thinking the architectural design. Questions about the building lifetime, the building environmental impact and the design process of a building. How to design buildings throughout time ? Is there any sustainable architecture ? We have to think about the life cycle of the building and the way of recycling or re-using the construction materials. I believe that materials and details are the main replies and I am looking forward to start my career to keep questioning my work.

The following projects are a selection of my work during my architectural studies

ANALYSIS/ Analyse the center of Galeria

Villages in Corsica started to settle down in the mountain because people were scared of pirates and illnesses bringing by the sea. Now, every new constructions are being built near the coast because of tourism. It’s creating an urban sprawl which is a threat for the natural environment of Corsica. Therefor, the center of Galeria is being abandoned, especially the green area. This place is not maintained anymore and there is a need to compose a new project for this area. This space is based on qualities for new constructions : - Green spaces/ Vegetable gardens - Watercourse - Topography - A sea view The program for the project was to create new housing buildings for the citizens of Galeria. Then, it seemed to be a great idea to enjoy the green area creating new parcels for housing or gardens and also improving the central part of Galeria.

PROJECT/ Reanimate the green area of Galeria - Corsica

Urbanize the green heart of Galeria in order to improve exchanges between the Est and the West part of the green area and to avoid urban sprawl on the coast : - Design new parcels for new housing buildings - Create terraces with stone walls and integrate an irrigation system in the walls to irrigate vegetable gardens - Organize a network of pedestrian paths to make relations between citizens on both side of the watercourse - Keep a public space with wild vegetation along the canal - Create a public place around the chapel and also a gite and a communal home for the village

PROJECT/ Design a Garden cottage in Finland - Research about the Re-Use of wood

In Finland, I had a class of Finnish Wood architecture and the task was to design a Garden cottage. The topic of the lesson was the Re-Use of structural pieces of wood found in old cottages. Our design process aimed to be a part of the scientific research about the re-use of structural elements in Finland. I found the work interesting because it has shown that our architecture is threatened in time and that we have to think about the future of our buildings while designing them. Although it’s difficult to evaluate the durability of the wood after 50 or 100 years. The challenge was to work with old windows and structures for a new construction. So my idea was to re use the windows to make movable walls that can be completely open toward the outdoor space of the cottage. I started with the concept of African huts in Cameroon. This reference appeared during classes of African architecture. I wanted to create a protected cottage with a private exterior space. Also, in order to keep some flexibility and to have the possibility of arranging the design according to clients hopes; I chose to work with standard volumes, therefore making it easier to work reusing pieces of wood.

FINAL THESIS/ Finnish wooden architecture - An example of ecological and social goals

Finland is composed by 70% of forest, and this forest is the resource of the Finnish culture which has always generated wooden construction in symbiosis with nature. Finnish people have created a cultural activity around this nature with the creation of cottages and saunas. Nowadays, ecological aspects of construction are important and wooden constructions are taking a higher place in architecture. New goals are leading the designs like the Re-Use of materials. Finland has started to develop these activities to preserve the traditional wooden housing for the future generations. This country is a master of wooden construction and an exemplar in reducing a building’s energy footprint. This thesis is the result of many experiences, readings and meetings during my journey in Finland. It’s also the consequence of my interest for wood. Being the daughter of a carpenter, I’m used to this material since my childhood. I always have been really concerned about wooden architecture, therefore, my journey in Finland and the project of Re-Use have been the motivating factors to study the Finnish wooden housing. I’m wondering now how this experience can be helpful for my professional future, so I started to think about : « Could be a new concept of wooden houses inspired by Finnish wooden architecture ? »

PROJECT/ Design of a cultural building for the centre of Tampere in Finland

A cultural building should be an active and a social meeting place for citizens. The essential part of the exercise was to find a new and an innovative design. The building accommodates a multipurpose hall, an auditorium, exhibition spaces, reading areas, a restaurant, a club room and working spaces. The idea was to use all the surface of the site to design an impressive volume which attracts the citizens. I wanted a massive square building outside and circle spaces and shapes inside to create the surprise. Therefore, I decided to work with voids also to bring natural light inside the building. The circulation through the building is free and easy and It takes into account the flux of people on the site. The principal functions can work together to create a big open space. The exhibition space is organized around the main void made in concrete and glass. This articulation creates an emotional and impressive space all around the accessible outdoor space where a huge statue is standing.

PROJECT/ Apartment block - Restaurant - Collective space - Public spaces

The aim of the project was to re-build a block of apartments in the city centre of Tournai. The main concern was to create the best floor plan for this area integrating apartments, public spaces, collective spaces and a restaurant. The building shape is oriented toward the square in front of the church in order to open the building on the square and create more views toward the church. The research was about how to connect all these spaces keeping privacy for the apartment block which lead to creating a concrete base for the apartments and unify the building. Also, a lot of work was made on the entrance halls in order to have a luminous and a functional one. The restaurant is located in the front part of the building toward the square of the church. It’s a dynamic function to bring life in the surrounding areas. A diversity of typology is created for the apartments.

PROJECT/ Apartment’s block in Rotterdam- A public space - A commercial bar

The site area is in front of a park and it’s surrounded by housing buildings mostly made in bricks. A library is settled down on the same area. The dynamic part of the place is situated along the main road. The first idea was the creation of a relation between the building and the library. So I decided for the floor plan to have a public place opening toward the library and shops and restaurants in relation with this place. The entire floor plan is divided in two entities : - the dynamic part with public spaces and a commercial zone - the housing part with the apartment block and a collective courtyard The entrance halls are large and luminous in order to have a great feeling while entering the building. There are four typologies of apartments and a typology of three storey houses. Therefore, this building is a place where people of all ages can live and meet.

PROJECT/ Tower of observation along a channel

The channel goes through a part of Belgium. It is framed on each side by tall poplars set up in a regular rhythm establishing a peaceful landscape. It was a project of studying structure and stability. Our theme for the tower’s structure was the “Mimesis”. So the idea was to build the tower between the trees creating an arborescent structure. It leads to a hybrid system to hold the floor of each level : - diagonal legs in compression - cables hanging up from the top structure ( Vierendeel) - the main structure is a central stairwell marked off with four masts and Vierendeel beams

PROJECT / A community center - Nursery - Services - Multipurpose hall

The Marie-Louise square in Tournai is a transition between a medieval typology of houses and a 19th century urban structure. Huge centenary trees stand around the square, they are creating a strong atmosphere which is important to take into account. I designed the building in the lowest and empty area of the park. It makes a boundary that creates intimate spaces and invite people to cross the park. Trees are still dominating the environment with their greatness and the building just emphasizes the natural elements of the site, creating a low building slipping under the canopy. The roof is the strongest part of the building that creates a harmony of the shape. The nursery is half underground to be protected from the outside whereas the multipurpose hall is wide-open toward the green areas and the public paths.

NUIT DE L’ ARCHITECTURE 2015 - NDA - 31 th edition / Architectural and cultural Event

“The architectural day and night” is a traditional and cultural event organized each year, since 31 years ago, by the students of the last year of architecture. This is an independent event from architecture school and the organizers are volunteers. We created a No Profit Association to organize the event and we divided the team in different groups of work : secretary, finances, communication, scenography, construction site, sponsors, exhibitions, music, security, bars and waste management. We had 10 months to organize the event, including : find a site, secure the site and find materials to create an atmosphere around the anamorphosis theme. The event is divided in two parts : during the day, different artists are working on the site, sculptors, architects, lecturers, musicians, painters, photographers, exhibitors of various art. And during the night, 4 stages are representing groups of musics till 5 am in the morning. The benefits of the event are mostly for associations (except 18 % for the organizers of the 32nd edition) : 36 % for an association which helps people to renovate their houses; 36 % for an association of Tournai to integrate immigrants and 10 % for an association of Art at school ( to help the students to practice their drawing abilities)
