“Good job, ladies! It’s great to see local places to ‘wander’ to in East Texas. It’s fun to read about nearby spots to enjoy in the area.” Leah James, Longview
“I really enjoy Charm because it highlights local women and their success stories. I also like hearing about what is going on in East Texas for women and seeing all of the advertisements that cater to women. I think it’s fun to search for the hidden charm while reading it as well. I look forward to getting the magazine every two months and wish that it came out more often. It’s great that there is something out there to highlight local women’s successes, book reviews, product reviews and that supports local businesses as well. Great job, Charm staff!”

“
The tweezers worked just fine for me. The shape of the product was a little awkward — it would have been easier to manage had the base been a bit narrower. I tried the magnifying glass, but that was a bit too small so I opted for my 10x magnifying mirror I have at home. But, the tweezers themselves worked fine, and I’d recommend this product to others.
”
May / June 2009
“
The tweezers are OK, but they’re a bit thick making them a little hard to handle. The magnifying glass is convenient, but you need to practice using them in order to use the tweezers effectively. Overall, I’d say I recommend them to other ladies.

“
I was so excited to try this product out! I have to admit the excitment quickly turned to disappointment when I tried to actually use the product. I first tried them in my car, and everything about them was odd and abnormal. The mirror was too tiny and the magnifying glass was a joke. The tweezers themselves were big and bulky. The hand position you have to use to make the product work was awkward as well. When using at home, it was not any better ... too cumbersome. My suggestion to my fellow gadgety girlfriends? I love a new gadget, but this isn’t it. Stick with regular tweezers.
“
I found the tweezers to be awkward to grip because of their shape. I like the idea of the light, but the mirror isn’t very helpful because it’s too small. Everything works OK, but it’s hard to use the tweezers. I wouldn’t recommend this product.
”
Gilmer
“
The Avon magnifying light up tweezer is great in theory; but in practice leaves a little to be desired. The light and the minimagnifying glass are fabulous; however the tweezer itself is a little too short to do much with. I will be using the light and magnifying light and using a separate tweezer to do my eyebrows.

Don’t let the hot summer weather become an instant hair wrecker. Ponytails are a great off-the-neck hair option for any season, but especially the summer season. Battle heat, humidity, frizz and fly-a-ways by turning your Plain Jane pony into something with pizzazz. If you think ponytails are hairstyles only reserved for dog bathing and baseball parks, think again. Whether you’re a casual chick, a working woman or a date-night-diva, Charm’s got the solution to your summertime hair affair.

keeping it casual
Low ponytails provide a look that’s casual and sporty — the perfect ’do for running around town or eating an afternoon lunch with some friends. Stylist Cat Nash at Salon Jes in Longview gives simple instructions on how to achieve this easy, breezy style.
1
after hours
There are a variety of hair updos to choose from for a fancy night out on the town. Why not keep your style simple yet sophisticated by opting for a ponytail? It may not sound elegant, but with a few tips from Kimberly Benoit, stylist at Rumours Spalon in Longview, your hair will be looking hot for a fun evening out with your main squeeze or with your favorite group of girls.
With clean, dry hair – curl strands in long, loose locks using your curling iron or flat iron.
1
2
2
Start by covering your locks with a thickening agent to ad texture.
Once hair is curled, section your hair at the front of the scalp in a half-circle section for the front lift (use a 2- to 3-inch section)
Then, divide your hair into three sections and position into diagonal back parts. Take each strand and curl them in opposite directions.
3
3
Decide which direction you want your ponytail to go. If you have bangs, plan to pull your pony in the opposite direction of your head. Loosely pull your locks in the direction you’ve chosen.
Curl your hair up and away from your face.
4
4
Lightly tease, then pin back with a pin.
Use your own hair instead of rubber bands to tie your hair. Tie a section clockwise, then another counterclockwise, then clockwise again. Pin it.
5
Pull your hair into a low side ponytail.
6

Ashley Crews, Longview
Finally, use a light holding spray.
cool & casual
5
Finish this ’do by spraying a glossing mist over your hair to keep hair looking romantic, but allowing for a firm hold.
on the clock
Perfectly pulled and slicked back hair tied up in a ponytail is a great look for the working woman. It’s a chic and sleeker style than the casual pony, and you can wear this look to the office to feel fancy, fresh and fabulous! Stylist Marisha Allen at Divine Appointment in Longview shows us how to get this look.
Cat also showed us how to add a touch of sophistication to this ponytail.
4
When nearing the bang area, flatiron sections backward before teasing.
5
When you reach your desired height for your front bump, comb your hair into a smooth “poof.”
1
Beth Bailey, Longview
Section the back of your hair into a ponytail.
2
Part your hair on either side of the bangs area up, leaving sides down.
3
Take the top section of your hair (starting from the back), and tease it in 1- to 2-inch sections working forward.
May / June 2009
6
Pin the section at the top of the pony-
tail.
7
Take the sides of your hair and smooth them straight back, one at a time while wrapping the end of each side section around your ponytail to hide the hairband.
8
Zoie Perry, Hallsville
Pin underneath ponytail, and use a light, workable spray while styling, until desired look is created.
1
Before styling, blow dry your hair with a texture-smoothing lotion.
2
Pull your hair into a ponytail. Be careful to leave out bangs and a square of hair on the top.
3
Smooth the sides down with a sculpting paste.
4
Back comb the square of hair on top to give cushion for a slight bump. Smooth hair back and pin to ponytail.
5
Take some hair from the ponytail and wrap it around the band to cover the band and hair pins.
6
Hairspray for fly-aways and a finished look.

If the possibility of getting a good night’s sleep seems as hard to grasp as those sheep you’ve been counting, you’re in good company. Sleep deprivation in women is a growing concern in the medical field and, according to Baher M. There is no better way to truly experience the majestic and mysterious Caddo Lake than with a little paddle power, and in Uncertain, Texas, you’re certain to get the ride of your life during a one-of-a-kind, eco-cruise experience on The Swamp Thing.

Johnny and LaLette are eager to guide you through all the twists and turns of the majestic Caddo Lake.
With a quiet, dependable electric push, this 28foot, 16-seat paddle wheel tour boat slides through the lily pads in less than a foot of water. Its in its element in the backwaters, taking visitors to intriguing places on this mystic lake. Husband and wife team Johnny and LaLette Fletcher will be your tour guides aboard The Swamp Thing. For an hour and a half, they take you through winding bayous and lush cypress alleyways while Johnny navigates and narrates his knowledge of Caddo, including the history surrounding it, the wildlife that inhabit it and the tales behind it. “Guests have a great time on this tour, which is like a laid-back history lesson and nature show in one,” Johnny said. “There are many stories to tell about the area, and you can see tons of wildlife — beavers, ducks, beautiful blue heron and white egrets ... and

What we love most in art is the beauty it brings into our lives and the dreams and ideas it inspires. Thirty-five years ago, Pat George Mitchell founded the Longview Ballet Theatre.
Through her organization, she touches lives and reaches out to those who share her belief in the power of music and ballet to transform us and make us think, feel and smile.
This year, Longview Ballet Theatre will bring “Cinderella” to the stage at The Belcher Center in Longview — a production full of hope, beauty and enchantment, much like the life of Pat George Mitchell. 24 | mycharmonline.com | charm

The clever wit of the stories behind these characters is what makes the reader unable to put the book down. True Southern charm and drama!”

Suddenly, Trish shows up at Mary’s law office pleading for protection from her abusive, drug-dealing, mob-connected boyfriend. Mary suddenly feels like she is back in high school and can’t win Trish’s approval no matter how hard she tries. Mary has to face her dark past and save Trish. Scottoline’s books are always appealing, captivating and fun to read!”

Rated PG “This is an action-packed love story about a firefighter and his wife who are experiencing problems in their marriage. The husband, played by Kirk Cameron, realizes that his marriage is worth rescuing, and in a 40-day journey he learns the keys to unconditional love and how to develop a dynamic relationship with his spouse. He realizes also that love is not just a feeling — it’s a commitment. This is a great movie for married couples or those contemplating marriage.”

The Devil in the Junior League
by Linda Francis Lee “Forget any desperate housewives and McDreamy doctors! You’re in for fall-on-the-floor laughing when you listen to Linda Francis Lee’s ‘The Devil in the Junior League’ on tape. This is a hilarious tale of how Fredericka, a junior leaguer falling on hard times, agrees to make over a sweet hillbilly neighbor, Nikki, who is fabulously wealthy. Nikki wants to be in the Junior League. Along the way, all the do’s and don’ts and pearls of girlie wisdom must be obeyed, such as: stilettos — always unacceptable; only fast girls shave their legs above the knee; no diamonds worn before dinner; and a lady never wears a watch after six in the evening. Listen to this book and you will never look at a twin-set the same way again.”

are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp. They rub it, and a genie comes out. The genie says, “I’ll give each of you just one wish.” “Me first! Me first!” the admin clerk said. “I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat without a care in the world!” Poof! She’s gone. “Me next! Me next!” the sales rep said. “I want to be in Hawaii, relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of pina coladas and the love of my life.” Poof! He’s gone. “OK, you’re up next,” the genie said to the manager. The manager said: “I want those two back in the office after lunch.” Moral of the story: Always let your boss have the first say.

Then, after dinner, you are going to draw me my bath so I can relax. And when I’m finished with my bath, guess who’s going to dress me and comb my hair?” His wife replies, “The funeral director would be my guess.”

The judge then said, “I will then give you six days in jail.” Before the judge could actually pronounce the punishment, the woman’s husband spoke up and asked the judge if he could say something. PAm WesTbrook spent her life helping others. she enjoyed her career as a full-time dental assistant while maintaining a beautiful home with her husband and two sons. she was a woman who HAd IT All. Yet this Carthage resident’s life took a dramatic turn when a silent disease caught up with her. “At first there were no symptoms other than the fact I was tired all the time,” Pam said. “I honestly thought my constant fatigue was from being employed full-time and being a full-time mother to my then-high-schoolaged boys. That’s what I accredited it to for the longest time, anyway. In 1993, I went to donate blood for the first time in my life. It was then that I was diagnosed with chronic aggressive hepatitis C.” “The hardest part for me was the anger and hopelessness I felt with the diagnosis,” said Pam, who was infected during a blood transfusion in 1975 as a result of complications during childbirth. “I had to learn how to not look back in anger, but instead focus on how to better my future.” And with that resolution, Pam turned her frown upside down, and is now leading a healthy, happy life with her family and the non-profit organization she started up — Hepatitis C Advocate Network (HepCAN). the united states are infected with hepatitis C, a viral infection that causes inflammation of the liver, and is a leading cause of cirrhosis, liver transplants and liver cancer. “Hep C is the most physically exhausting disease you can fathom. i got to the point where i couldn’t do anything. Anywhere i went, i was in a wheelchair,” Pam said. “i was willing to do anything to stop this disease from ruining my life.” For years, Pam tried every treatment on the market, and she even signed up to participate in a clinical trial at Baylor Medical Center. After doctors at Baylor evaluated her health, they immediately put her on a donor list for a liver transplant. Pam’s prayers were answered when, in February 2005, she received her new organ thanks to the southwest Transplant Alliance. it was when she woke up in her hospital bed after a successful surgery that Pam realized she was a miracle. “From the moment i woke up, everything about me changed. i had a renewed happy spirit and a fire and zest for life,” she said. “i realized that my duty in life was to educate, inform and promote organ donation, an essential process for others with hepatitis C to live and survive. 1. Cut open an empty cardboard snack cracker box. Other boxes you could use might be from cereal, fruit snacks, or snack cakes. 2. Lay the box out flat on the table. 3. Cut out the two largest pieces of cardboard from the box (front and the back). Measure the long side and trim so that it can be divided into 7 equal pieces. For example, if it is 22 cm long, trim off one cm. This will leave you 21 cm and that can be divided by 7. Same goes if you have 8 inches, trim down to 7 inches. 4. Now do the same thing on the short side so that it can be divided into 3 equal pieces. 5. Use a pencil to divide trimmed cardboard into 21 pieces, 7 across and 3 down. Cut out all pieces. 6. Stack pieces into piles of 3. You should have 7 piles.
Nancy and Zach Fasang of Longview
7. Use the glue stick to attach the 3 pieces together, stacked on top of each other. Be sure to face the shiny side (decorative side) of the cardboard in toward the center to make both sides of your stack easier to paint. 8. You should now have 7 pieces comprised of 3 equal pieces each. Paint all 7 pieces with black paint and let dry. Repeat on the other side. 9. Cut a stand from the other piece of cardboard and paint it black on the non-shiny side. Let dry. 10. Use the foam stamps to add letters to the 7 black pieces that spell out “BEST DAD.” Apply a light coat of white paint to the stamp and press the stamp onto the black piece, leaving room at the bottom for it to be inserted into the stand.
you’ll need: • Cardboard from snack crackers box • 2- 12” long wooden dowels or craft sticks • Black and white acrylic paint • Scissors • Alphabet foam stamps
11. Cut both dowels in half and sand the ends with sandpaper.
• Glue stick
12. Lay two dowels side by side onto the black stand. Place them toward the top left side. Place the other two toward the bottom right side. Glue them in place, but leave enough room in between each set of two to insert your letter pieces.
• Hot glue gun
13. Paint the dowels black. 14. Use the hot glue gun to insert letters into the dowel holders.
