Indian Summers
There’s something in the summer’s air… The year is 1932, the place is India, and the people are romanticised, politicised and radicalised. They are drawn together and driven apart by class, race, love and theft, and the world around them is changing in the most dramatic of ways. In the small British colony of Simla, placed at the foothills of the Himalayas, the antiquated beliefs of the British Empire still remain. But the young are hungry for freedom; freedom from Imperial rule, from oppressive values and from the past that throws a heavy shadow. A sweeping saga, Indian Summers weaves life’s idiosyncrasies amidst the breath-taking beauty of India and its people, the grandness of its palaces and aristocracy, and the wildness of its bazaars and radical youth, driving the country into a new frontier. The Brokenwood Mysteries
Welcome to Brokenwood, a small country town like any other. The people are pleasant, the scenery is idyllic and there is a strong sense of community and provinciality. There is a golf club, a mother’s club and the town regularly plays host to wine shows. But beneath the peaceful veneer grows lust, envy and greed, all of which too often lead to murder. Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd has a uniquely intuitive way with murder mysteries. Dishevelled in appearance but sharp of mind, DI Shepherd and his partner, DC Kristin Simms, must question everyone (including the deceased – one of Mike’s investigative quirks) if they are to solve the mystifying murders that befall this town. In these stand-alone, feature-length episodes, each body, each resident and each motive is a piece of the puzzle that must be put in place. HD 4 x 2 hr South Pacific Pictures for Prime, New Zealand

In Brokenwood, an early morning mist will often give way to a glorious day. As far as towns go it’s bucolic, pastoral yet curious. All-in-all, Brokenwood is a pretty nice place to live – if you watch your back and sleep with one eye open. When conceiving this series we wanted The Brokenwood Mysteries to be a crime series based in reality. The murders are always tangible: the motivations are recognisable

and the plots are solvable by human deduction more than forensic smoke and mirrors. Aside from the experienced and intuitive Detective Mike Shepherd (played by Neill Rea) and his offsiders Sims (Fern Sutherland) and Breen (Nic Sampson), there are two other central characters: The locations provided by the varied and beautiful landscapes of New Zealand: rivers, lakes, farms, vineyards, surf beaches, harbour inlets and dense bush (all within 40 minutes of the city-based studios) and original New Zealand country music. wanted him to have idiosyncrasies that supported his character in how he went about his work. A passion for country music made him both single minded (no one else seems to like it) and warm hearted (there’s something honest and human about good country music). In recent years, local country has found its own voice – one that echoes both the New Zealand landscape and the people whilst still evoking the ‘heart on a sleeve’ fundamentals that make country music raw, intriguing and mysterious. As Mike says: ‘Country music provides the best three minute crime stories ever sung.’

Foyle’s War series 9
The highly acclaimed historical detective drama returns to the 1940s, where echoes of the war still resonate through Britain and the halls of Whitehall. In this post-war Britain, Foyle is charged with investigating assassination attempts, Nazi war-criminals and a heinous act of anti-Semitic violence committed on British soil, with ramifications that reach far beyond Germany to British Palestine. Meanwhile, Sam faces the domestic impact of WWII, ushering in a triumphant national health service and a clamp down on a prevailing black market that threatens her own family. Profile: Interview with Joan Wadge (Costume Designer) Q: Everybody’s been commenting on how lovely the costumes are. The whole look of it is beautiful. How is it all done? Joan Wadge (JW): As with any script, you go through it and you research your period. The director might feel that he wants a particular look, you talk to set design about a colour palette… So, in theory, you’re working together as a team. When I joined the programme last year the series had moved into London and it was decided we’d give it a much more city look. The emphasis was on grey for the austerity and it’s ‘46, so you research your period. My emphasis [for series 9] has been predominantly on the grey palette; greys, very subdued reds. Extraordinarily, what I found in
researching the period was just how bright austerity Britain was. There were five colours and they were much brighter than we expect. A lot of the clothes I have are original. Daniel’s suit today that he’s wearing is original. Q: You’re saying that the colours were bright but the colours they’re all wearing [on set] are not bright? JW: Well, because in costume in television you don’t work with a lot of bright colours, you always subdue it because that’s what we’ve come to expect from a period. And so, yes, you might introduce it but you try and tone it down or you match it with other things to bring it down to a certain level because in HD, high definition, colours ping out. So, you can’t always use the true colours.

Family Nine Months Later
After nine months of waiting and wondering, a group of first-time mothers and fathers are bringing their new-born babies home, and are about to learn what it really means to be a parent. Through sleepless nights and strained relationships, breast-feeding and post-natal depression, see how different families cope with the reality of raising a child and how those moments of joy and overwhelming love can make it all worthwhile. Born this Way
It’s thought that 1 in 20 children aged between five and sixteen has a ‘conduct disorder’. Has their environment lacked the necessary discipline? Or are they suffering from a behavioural disorder? Using sophisticated tests and experiments, our experts are here to determine the cause of the problem and to offer support and treatments to improve the lives of ‘problem children’ and their parents. Profile: Tim Hammond, Executive Producer Conceived by two new mums, Nine Months Later follows five couples as they embark on the most challenging journey of their life – the journey into parenthood. From the final stages of pregnancy to six months after birth, this six part series has unprecedented access to ten diverse and amazing contributors. At its heart an observational character-led series, it captures every tearful moment of anxiety to every life affirming moment of joy that only this life changing period can bring. Cameras are there at every crucial stage; from the idealistic expectations of parenthood to
the unpredictable reality of birth. From the sleepless nights to the strain on relationships. For mum, the struggle to breastfeed and live up to the pressure of being ‘a good mum’, to the loneliness as dad goes back to work. For dad, the battle to bond with baby, adjusting to a relationship where he now comes second and the tension he feels when his sex life has all but gone. But Nine Months Later also captures the joy, the tears, and the overwhelming feelings of love that come when two people bring new life into this world. What makes this series so unique is that it is produced and directed by filmmakers that are also new parents. Bellota’s Lauren Pushkin
and Melissa Cortizo developed the idea not long after their own journeys into parenthood. Facing many of the issues explored in the series themselves, they had appreciation and empathy when developing, casting, and filming each and every contributor. This understanding brings to Nine Months Later an honesty and intimacy that is not often seen on television and allows the series to be very natural, truthful and raw. It’s a series people can relate to; a sometimes serious, sometimes funny review of that first six months that we’re all too tired to remember.

Grayson Perry: Who Are You?
In this three-part series, BAFTAwinning Grayson Perry goes on an entertaining and moving exploration of what makes us all who we are. Perry will meet a selection of people who make up our society, from war veterans to unconventional glamour girls, and with them will look closely at those moments in our lives when we try to express who we think we are. Through a series of portraits, created on screen by Perry, these individuals are then immortalised in an image of “who they are”, the results at once humorous and touching. Brave and unflinching, this project links art, society and our sense of selves in a unique and eye-opening way. HD 3 x 1 hr
Profile: Neil Crombie, Creative Director at Swan Films It was probably during the opening morning session of our Riot Awareness Training Course that the artist Grayson Perry realised this series was going to be taking him out of his normal comfort zone. He was making a portrait of a group of hardcore Loyalist demonstrators in Northern Ireland, and there was a big march in Belfast we were going to film. There had been rising tensions over the flying of the Union Jack flag above City
Swan Films for Channel 4, UK
Hall, and for an artist making a series about British identity, it was too good an opportunity to miss. But maybe not in drag on this occasion, eh Grayson? But riot awareness turns out to be the least challenging thing about the whole process for Grayson. When they’re finished, he’s allowed to hang his portraits in the holy temple of portraiture in Britain, the National Portrait Gallery. His portrait subjects will take their place amongst the grandees of our history, in the panelled
splendour of the 19th Century Galleries. How will Perry’s work stand up to the setting? And how will his portrait subjects react, when they come to the National Portrait Gallery and see the work he’s made about them? The Belfast parade passed off peacefully. Now we’re just hoping Grayson won’t need the riot awareness when his subjects come to see what he’s done with them.
Grayson’s Great Design
Upon a hill in rural England, a mere 40 miles from Central London, stands Turner Prize-winning artist, Grayson Perry, beside his latest visionary creation. From the artist’s mind, realised in these green and pleasant lands, there is a chapel erected in honour of ‘Julie: The Patron Saint of Social Mobility’. Enter the satirical world of Grayson Perry as he embarks on perhaps his most outlandish work of art to date, a poignant study of the way we worship in modern Britain. At once provocative and sincere, how will Grayson’s chapel be received by the public? HD 1 x 1 hr Swan Films for Channel 4, UK

How to Plan an Ancient Mega City (w/t)
The first town of over a million people was built more than 2000 years ago. Without any of our modern conveniences and what we would consider necessities today, how did they function? Professor Andrew Wallace Hadrill O.B.E. explores the remains of these ancient megalopolis’, explaining how to make a city work without the benefits of modern technology. How did Rome house, heat and feed its people? How did Athens operate without electricity, gas, railways or turbines? And what can we learn from these ancient civilisations? Egypt’s Lost Queen
Historian, Joann Fletcher explores the hitherto downplayed role that women took in the running of state and, indeed, in shaping every aspect of life in Ancient Egypt. Perhaps unassumed by most, the ancient Egyptians were a civilization unparalleled in sexual equality, with women holding the title of ‘Pharaoh’ no fewer than 18 times, while there were also female doctors, tutors, prime-ministers and priestesses. Ancient Egypt: Life and Death in the Valley of the Kings
Beyond the gold and the lapis lazuli, behind the Pharaohs and their tombs stands the beating heart of Ancient Egypt – the people. Archaeologist, Dr. Jo Fletcher would like you to meet Kha and Meryt. Secrets of the Great Wall (w/t)
What we know about China’s Great Wall is always changing. A decade ago we thought we knew how long it was, but in recent years we learned that it is almost double that length and there are many more secrets to uncover about this man-made marvel. The scars along its length tell stories of attacks thwarted and bastions lost, while the construction patterns reflect changes of power and the development of new techniques. How was it built? The Castle (w/t)
Domestic historian, Ruth Goodman, and archaeologists Peter Ginn and Tom Pinfold take on perhaps their most ambitious foray into the past, as they head to France to build a genuine medieval castle. Underway since 1997, now is the perfect time for our three intrepid history adventurers to join this magnificent construction where they can re-create authentic medieval castle living from within its rising walls. HD 5 x 1 hr Lion Television for BBC Two, UK
WHY BUILD A CASTLE IN FRANCE? After producing five different eras of “Farm” series over the last 10 years – ranging from Tudor to Second World War - it was felt that we might give farming a rest for a while and look to fresh pastures…The challenge being to maintain the compelling “living history” virtues we’ve established but transferring them to a new setting with new challenges.
By far the most exciting of the options we explored was the prospect of building a Medieval Castle. Especially one in France. Who could resist? An epic historical building project; a beautiful location; a hugelyknowledgeable French workforce who have given us invaluable help; and exceptionally good wine too. It’s proved to be a fantastic experience.
