AGEs and Ageing Are you at risk of ageing faster than you should? BEAUTIFUL SKIN IS IN YOUR HANDS To really understand how you can create younger, healthier looking skin you first need to understand how your skin ages and works. There are two main ways in which our skin ages; intrinsic, which is all to do with our internal, genetics, hormones declining due to age, diet and lifestyle. Extrinsic ageing is influenced by external factors and it is this type of ageing that most affects our skin by contributing to deep wrinkles, lines, dehydration, rosacea and sallow skin to name a few. While we can’t stop the ageing process all-together (aah if only!) you can avoid the real nasties that cause the most damage when it comes to extrinsic ageing. After all you only have one skin, the largest organ in our body and it totally reflects our lifestyle choices. It stands to reason that we would want to look after it. AGEs are large molecules called advanced glycation end products. Science has proven the damage that AGEs do to our body in general and appear to be a major contributing factor in skin ageing as well as being implicated in diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. Food high in sugars such as glucose are involved as they attach, or cross-link, to proteins in collagen and form the advanced glycation end products. Your collagen and elastin fibres harden and this makes it difficult to repair. AGEs accumulate in the dermal layer of your skin particularly by attaching themselves to collagen proteins. Collagen fibres are usually quite elastic, like a spring coil and maintain skin elasticity in combination with our elastin fibres. So with the hardening or stiffening it reduces our skins ability to ‘bounce back’, creates pockets of hardened collagen. Not all of the damage is reversible but you can definitely reduce the amount of further damage by taking action now. Research shows you can simply eat fewer AGEs to improve your health, skin and longevity! Here is a list of some of the worst factors that increase AGEs in the body.
SOME FACTORS THAT INCREASE AGEs IN OUR BODIES Sugar - while considered by some ‘health experts’ to be harmless
in moderation, albeit empty in nutritional value, there is growing evidence that this is not the case. New research shows clearly that if you want younger-looking skin you need to skip the sugar and find healthier options. A diet high in sugar may also shorten your lifespan. Scientists has reported excess sugar consumption is indirectly responsible for 35 million deaths annually worldwide because it significantly increases the risk of AGE-related diseases including diabetes and heart disease. Just by reducing the amount of processed food you eat you can lower your blood sugar levels and help reduce the amount of AGEs your body produces. While fruit sugars can also be used by your body to create AGEs they are also full of anti-oxidants, which protects you against AGEs and free radical damage and the benefit far outweighs the risk.
UV Exposure -
is the top cause of wrinkles and skin damage and there has been enough studies to show this as a fact. We are all more aware of the dangers of sun damage and the need to use quality sunscreen products and hats etc., but what you may not be aware of is the fact that most of the damage to our skin occurs not when we are at the beach, slathered in sunscreen, its the every day little things we do like picking up kids for school, drive to the shops, drive to work, have lunch outside, that causes the highest degree of UV exposure because we don’t consider using sunscreen to do these everyday chores. Before you get dressed in the morning consider putting on a sunscreen. If you are only popping in and out this will most likely give you enough cover to protect you for the day. (See our article on sunscreen and protection from UV damage). Wear a hat - nothing will protect your skin as good as a quality hat! Even if you only wear it around your garden, going to the shop, school it will still reduce dramatically the amount of exposure time.
Barbecued steak (and other red meats) - according to recent studies people who frequently
eat red meat over a period of time showed more skin wrinkling than those who rarely consumed it. Animal derived foods that are high in protein and fats, especially red meat and deli meats are rich in wrinkle-promoting AGEs and cooking causes new AGEs to form. In contrast, low protein and low fat foods such as vegetables, fruits and whole-grains contain relatively few AGEs even after cooking. Of all the foods that were tested, steak cooked with olive oil contains the most AGEs, closely followed by plain cooked steak. Did you know that researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health concluded that eating as little as 85grams per day of unprocessed red meat increases the risk of death by 13 percent. Frequent consumption of processed meats such as bacon and hot dog sausages increases the risk of premature death by 20 percent - the same as if you smoked cigarettes!
Cheese (and other dairy products) studies have revealed that people who were most wrinkled were the ones who frequently consumed butter, ice-cream or full fat milk. A week of eating ice-cream every night is enough to see visible changes in the skin. And its no wonder as ice-cream is packed with sugar, saturated fats, milk sugars and additives.
Takeaway and fast food - is your take-out meals ruining your skin? Fat-food outlets use oils that are heated repeatedly and these oils change form when cooked at high temperatures. They become harmful trans fats, which behave like saturated fats in the body and its estimated that trans fats cause one out of every five heart attacks in the United Sates, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. However, while heat-resistant oils are less prone to trans fats they pose a different problem; they are rich in AGEs which attack skin collagen, decreasing skin elasticity.
So what can you do? • Reduce the amount of sugar in your diet - seek help in finding a healthier alternative. • Protect your face while outside - your skin will love you for it. • Reduce the amount and frequency of alcohol consumed • Don’t burn your toast (or meats) a it contains more AGEs • Reduce your intake of dietary AGEs by reducing intake of solid fats (butter an margarine), beef and other fatty meats, dairy products and fried foods and increase your consumption of fish, legumes, vegetables, fruits and whole-grains. • You can potentially halve the amount of AGEs by changing the way you prepare food, and using medium - to low-heat cooking methods. • Instead of frying, roasting or grilling, use low-AGE cooking methods such as poaching, boiling and steaming and make soups, curries, stews and casseroles. Essential fatty acids Did you notice the word ‘essential’? This means our body needs these beneficial fats to be provided by the foods we eat. They’re anti-inflammatory too, so load up your diet with plenty of foods rich in ‘good fats’ such as: salmon - mackerel tuna, flaxseed - walnuts, pine nuts, pecans & Brazil nuts, chia seeds - soy beans - avocado, Flaxseed oil is your new best friend – use it as a salad dressing or even add it to smoothies – aim to eat about 1 tablespoon every day.
Probiotics These are beneficial ‘alive’ cultures known as ‘good bacteria’ - they help create the ideal environment in your intestines and balance out the ‘bad bacteria’. Yes, you can. The problem lies in the type of treatment you purchase. How can you be sure it is the correct one for you? Some treatments are high in moisture, which leaves the hair soft, but you may need protein to strengthen the hair or a combination of both. You may only need to use a protein treatments for a few weeks before changing so continuing past that time could leave your hair more brittle which can cause breakage.
How often should I use one
Most people should use a treatment one a week, but if you are experiencing problems like dandruff, hair loss, dry and damaged hair, then you would need them more frequent and often would need to combine some of them. We have a specialised treatment menu at Charmed and all our products are prescription and deal with conditions of the scalp and hair but we also have moisture, protein or combined treatments for all hair needs.
Foiling and Colouring
You have to remember that when you colour your hair you are putting it through a chemical process that damages the hair. Using a treatment straight after colouring or sometime prior protects your hair from most of this damage and ensures it is as healthy as can be. When you are using a bleach on someone’s hair or covering grey hair you need to use peroxides which open the cuticles to allow the colours to work. They can be drying and irritating. You can’t keep repeating this without needing some hair TLC - not if you want shiny, soft, healthy hair - and who doesn’t? What is the treatment and how does it work? The Soli-Tone 2500 is registered with the FDA and uses three technologies: pure spectrum Photo-Energy (LED), Impulse micro currents and ultrasound. LED (Light Emitting Diode) Therapy was initially developed by NASA and has been used to treat serious burns, crush injuries, diabetic ulcers, and patients with complications of cancer chemotherapy and radiation treatment. LED’s work by increasing the energy produced in the skins cells and accelerating tissue growth and regeneration. When it comes to ageing of the skin LED treatment reverses signs of photo ageing, increases collagen production, regenerates tissues, reduces redness, breaks down pigmentation, heals acne and when combined with Impulse Micro-Currents lifts sagging tissue (think the dreaded waddle!). How does the Soli-Tone 2500 compare to other LED treatments on the market? LED’s use specific wavelengths of Red, Blue, Green and Yellow light energy to stimulate the changes in your skin. Up to now, treatments (think Omnilux & MAX7) targeted individual problems (i.e. They use one spectrum of light or “scan” the light over the skin). Research has shown that the best results are seen when all 4 light wavelengths are used in conjunction and the skin is exposed for a constant and set time, depending on the condition being treated. Imagine if you tried to get a tan in a Solarium with just a few globes “scanning” back and forth across you - you would need 1000 times as many sessions to get your tan. The same applies when it comes to LED’s that merely scan back and forth across the face and so the whole face is not constantly exposed to the LED and so light absorption is reduced.

So it is the only technology that uses both light energy (LED’s) and Micro-Currents to treat the epidermis, dermis and muscular regions of your skin. How does the LumiFacial® treatment work? The LumiFacial® targets common skin problems, such as blemishes, redness, and uneven pigmentation. During the treatment, a wrap-around facial panel is used. The Soli-Tone 2500 selects the specific Light energy required for your skin type and condition. The treatment is completed in only 30 minutes. You can immediately return to your normal routine with no redness, peeling or necessity for time away from work. Treatment is very comfortable. What exactly is the LumiLift® procedure? The LumiLift® procedure is a revolutionary way of rejuvenating the skin and lifting sagging muscles. It is performed with two special electrodes that feature an advanced application of Micro-current and Light energy. During the LumiLift treatment, a pulsating light is directed at the skins surface. How many treatments do I need? Age, lifestyle, and skin condition will influence the number of treatments needed. A Journey worth taking At the start of this year we decided as a salon we wanted to do more in helping to sustain and nurture our planet. After all this is where our children and grand-children are going to live and bring up their children. While the task of what we wanted to do seemed huge we were still 100% certain this was the way to do our bit.
