The Encyclopedic Palace is an exhibition about obsessions and the power of imagination.

55th International Art Exhibition at the Biennale

5

T

he 55th international art exhibition is now underway, running from the 1st June to 24th

November 2013. It takes the form of an exhibition trail which begins in the gardens of the central pavilion and runs to the ‘Arsenale’. The curator of this exhibition is Massimiliano Gioni, who has chosen ‘il Palazzo Enciclopedico’ as its main theme. This name comes from ‘The Encyclopaedic Palace’, an exhibition which was planned by the Italian-American artist Marino Auriti in the 1950s but never completed.

for dialogue between the artist and the viewer, has inspired the exhibitions ‘Fare Mondi’(Daniel Birnbaum 2009) and ‘ILLUMInazioni’ (Bice Curger 2011). Continuing in this way, the 55th International Exhibition of Art has created a great deal of interest. ‘Il Palazzo Enciclopedico’ (Encyclopedic Palace) sets out to reflect on the creativity of the artist. The interest of the curators is in looking for relations between different worlds. The exhibition begins in the Garden’s Central Pavilion with a presentation of ‘Libro Rosso’(Red Book) by Carl Gustav Jung. Inside the huge spaces of the Biennale, the exhibition is arranged to go from natural forms to artificial ones. There are many works and figurative expressions such as films, photographs, videos, labyrinths, encyclopedic boards, performances and installations, including the complicated building of the Encyclopedic Palace itself. There are 88 participant nations in the historical pavilions, and this year there are 10 countries taking part for the first time: Angola, the Bahamas, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Ivory Coast, Republic of Kosovo, Kuwait, Maldives, Paraguay, Tuvalu and the Vatican City. A significant innovation is the participation of the Vatican City with an exhibition held in ‘Sale D’Armi’, one of the spaces that the Biennale is refurbishing as a permanent pavilion.

‘Vice Versa’

T

he Italian Pavilion at the Biennale features a project designed as an ideal journey through Italian

contemporary art called ‘Vice Versa’. This is a journey that tells us tales and shows us landscapes - real and imaginary – exploring Italian art and culture. The exhibition takes place in seven venues, six rooms and one garden, each hosting the work of two artists connected through themes, ideas and understanding. The themes are: view/place, sound/ silence, perspective/surface, familiar/ extraneous, complete/fragment, drama/comedy. The Biennale also conducts educational activities and guided tours for many different groups, including schools. The Biennale ‘session project’ will be taking place for the fourth consecutive year. This is an initiative for institutions working on art research such as the Art

As in the other two films, I wanted to tell a little known aspect of reality, and as a blue collar job that is not so common, it was right for me to talk about it. I found it interesting and wanted to shed some light. The protagonists of my films are always ordinary people, but in my opinion they are the heroes in real life today.

Do you plan more movies?

Yes, and they are always quite difficult to achieve.

How does it feel, after days of work, to see your work realized and exhibited in important exhibitions at international level?

Having the opportunity to show the work to audiences, more than insiders, gratifies me a lot, except that the finished work sare already projected into the next.

T

he ‘Officina Delle Zattere’ exhibition venues are in the same ‘cultural quarter’ that also includes the Academy’s

Gallery, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, ‘Punta della dogana’, ‘Fondazione Vedova’, ‘Magazzini Del Sale’ and the ‘Palazzo’. The building, built in the 1950s, housed young orphans, rescued from the street and taught the professions of the blacksmith, turner and cobbler. At that time it was originally the workshop of the ‘Artigianelli’ (little craftsmen) Institute. Later, it housed classrooms and the educational and craft workshops of the nearby Academy of Fine Arts. Its new use is an example of how historical architecture is able to adjust itself to the contemporary period. Despite being situated within the heart of historical Venice, the locations are both modern and well appointed. ‘Officina Delle Zattere’ includes an area of about 600 square meters, consisting of: - eight exhibition rooms and galleries: - two rest areas, research and Internet point areas; - office spaces - store rooms.

41

What does the title of the exhibition mean?

‘Ghisa’ (cast iron) is an important material in the first industrial buildings (nineteenth-century bridges were made in cast iron, and today’s factory girders are made in cast iron and they look very fascinating!). ‘Art fusion’ refers to the cast iron fusion: this is what we want to do with the different subjects involved, trying to make them connect with each other - to interact and createe harmonious evenings which represent this fusion between different ways of creating art.

What is the main theme of the exhibition? The theme is ‘the other half of the sky’ (that is, the female universe), so this year ‘Ghisa’ will host women artists or show works which deal with this main theme.

Charnwood Artslink International Charnwood Artslink International was born in the early 1990s

through links with the Indian state of Gujarat and European twinning links between Charnwood in the UK and towns in Belgium, France, Germany and Poland. Since then we have worked with or promoted the works of artists from over 100 countries. We began this work even earlier, as since 1977, Charnwood Arts, an arts and educational charity based in the UK East Mildands, has worked with artists and organisations around the world to create scores of exhibitions, events, workshops, festivals, publications and projects. This current magazine project, initiated in the summer of 2013 is designed to involve people between 16 and 35 years of age in producing magazines about arts and culture in, or from, their home countries. Most people involved in this project have no direct experience of producing a publication before undertaking the project and with support they are thrown into the deep end of undertaking ALL aspects of originating and producing the magazine for on-line distribution. All of the young people and young adults involved in this project to date have been involved in face to face work with Charnwood Arts. www.charnwoodarts.com
