eople’s Alliance for Democracy members were busy moving equipment and tents from the three-month-old protest site at Government House yesterday as they prepared to move the fight to Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports. Protesters collecting belongings such as TV sets and electric fans took photos as souvenirs.
Barricades come down PAD announced that that no protestors would stay overnight in Government House grounds, with key leader Chamlong Srimuang saying the main reason behind the move was a concern for safety. He also said that PAD barricades on nearby roads had to be cleared in preparation for HM the
King’s birthday on Friday. The end of the Government House occupation came suddenly, though many PAD members could never have imagined it would last more than three months when they arrived on August 26. The occupation began in protest against former Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, but continued when Somchai Wongsawat replaced him. The latter has not stepped into Government House since he became premiere, instead setting up temporary offices at Don Mueang Airport. Most PAD supporters welcomed the news, believing that Government House is no longer the main focus of protest and that the rally sites at the airports are safer. They also want to move away from the pro-government protesters who have gathered at Sanam Luang. “We don’t want any lives to be sacrificed,” said a poster on the Manager newspaper’s website.

bout 200,000 flowering plants surrounding the royal crematorium of HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana disappeared in two hours yesterday as Thais flocked for souvenirs of the funeral before the scene melted away. The dismantling of the crematorium, which is scheduled to be completed by tomorrow, began at 9.09am when 100 officials tackled the seven-tier white umbrella at its top. Earlier, a large crowd showed up with plastic bags to collect the colourful morning glory, dragon’s tongue, geraniums and marigolds after being given permission to do so by the Doi Tung Development Project. Pravit Boonmee, an official from the project’s agricultural
division, said key plants such as persimmon, rubiaceae and bonsai trees had been removed at 5am to decorate the Royal Palace and the Princess Mother Memorial Park. City resident Jamras Prasatnok, 60, said his early start had been worth it: he arrived at 7am, in time to collect a bagful of marigolds, regarded as auspicious flowers, to grow at home. The official in charge, Suchat

Then, observed by a large crowd, workers using a large crane began the tricky job of removing the soaring white umbrella. Decorative items inside the crematorium were moved to the Songtham Pavilion. Director-General of the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, Apinan Poshyananda, said the 84 paintings by artists depicting the life and work of the late Princess would be moved from the crematorium site’s exhibition. His office will present the paintings to HM the King before displaying them at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre in an exhibition slated for December 9 to 27.

briefly Why you should brush your tongue A Cologne-based dental health initiative recommends brushing the tongue as well as the teeth twice a day because bacteria, which cause bad breath, also collect on the tongue. Scraping away the layer of bacteria can reduce the gases that result from decomposition, the dental health initiative said. The best way of brushing the tongue is to use a scraper, from the back of the tongue forward using light pressure while holding the tip of the tongue firm, possibly with the help of a wash cloth or teaspoon to press the tongue upward. – DPA

omen in Papua New Guinea killed their baby boys over a decade-long period to stop breeding males who would continue longrunning tribal fighting. The tribal feud, which has carried on for more than 20 years, has left many women in the Gimi area of Okapa struggling to feed their children after their men went off to fight, The National said. Two women, Rona Luke and Kipiyona Belas, told the paper that the women decided to stop producing sons in the hope that they could reduce their tribe’s male stock. “Therefore, all the womenfolk agreed to have all male babies born killed because they have had enough of men engaging in tribal conflicts,” they revealed at a peace session in Goroka last week.
SACKED AIR CHIEF DEFENDS ESSAY Asia actually benefited from Japan’s WWII activities, maintains Tamogami A P , Tokyo
A
Japanese general who was fired as head of the air force for suggesting Japan deserves credit, not blame, for its World War II actions stood by his claim yesterday. Air Force Chief of Staff General Toshio Tamogami was dismissed a month ago for writing an essay that said Asia benefited from imperial Japan’s activities before and during the war. Tamogami defended that position yesterday, saying Japan had been unjustly subjected to what he called “the history of the victor”. He said he decided to write
the essay because he believes Japan has been wrongly blamed for being an aggressor in World War II, and that it cannot have a healthy relationship with its neighbors or assume a more active role on the global stage until that view of history is corrected.
‘Japan was gentler’ “I have to say that Japan was not alone in being an aggressor,” he told a news conference. “If you look at what the major world powers were doing at the time, I think Japan was gentler.” In dismissing Tamogami on October 31, Japan’s defence
minister said the general’s views were incompatible with Japan’s official policies. The publication of the essay titled “Was Japan an Aggressor Nation?” generated front-page headlines and debate in parliament over whether military leaders are out of step with Japan’s postwar pacifist constitution. Japan is often criticised by China and South Korea for not being contrite about its past and for trying to whitewash its often brutal militarist march into Asia. But Tamogami said Japan must stand up to such criticism. He said Japan deserves praise for building universities in Taiwan and Korea during the colonial period.
People late for school or work because of New York City subway delays can get notes from the transit agency to give to their teachers or bosses. The New York City Transit division says it gives passengers the notes so they can prove they’re not lying about being delayed while riding the subway. Passengers request the verification letters over the phone. NYC Transit verifies the date and time of the delay and sends a note in the mail. It mails 34,000 notes a year. It is working on a system so it can accept Internet requests and e-mail the excuse letters. – AP

Tenor Nuzzo held for drugs Japanese police have arrested American opera singer John Ken Nuzzo on suspicion of possessing illegal drugs. he camera work is not perfect and the footage a little grainy, but the Toronto policewoman looks straight into the camera and immediately asks for help. She wants the public to help her catch a man wanted for a vicious sexual assault, which she details right down to his black puffy jacket, as a police sketch of his stocky unsmiling face appears onscreen. It’s a move that marries hugely popular online social networking with old-fashioned police work: the footage is on the world’s biggest video sharing site YouTube, a few clicks
away from Beyonce’s latest music video. The aim is to tap into the massive community that can’t go a day without logging on to chat, share information and soak up online multi-media. And the global police agency Interpol has taken note.
Nabbing criminals “It’s inevitable,” said Dimitrios Souxes, a criminal intelligence officer based at the agency’s Lyon headquarters. “They are very successful and that is why we feel the need to go forward. No matter what, we have to follow developments otherwise we will be overcome and we will be outdated.” Interpol has already nabbed two prolific paedophiles after unprecented public appeals netted hundreds of tip-offs, and has video clips of Rwandan war criminals on
Facebook, Myspace and YouTube – sites it regularly monitors. Websites could be used to report sightings and track fugitive movements, to compare photographs of wanted persons, and upload vidoes, Interpol secretary-general Ronald Noble said. The unavoidable risk of criminals getting a heads up on the shared public information is outweighed by the potential benefits, he added. One case that stands out is that of a 17-year-old who was beaten, stripped naked and murdered in a gruesome attack believed to have been watched by more than 100 people. A nine-month probe proved fruitless. Then the police turned to YouTube. “A short while later we solved the case,” said Constable Scott Mills of the Toronto Police Service.

ustralian hard rock band AC/DC have made a triumphant return all over the globe, shooting straight back up the charts with their 15th studio album, “Black Ice” on Columbia, after an eight-year hiatus and selling a massive 1.7 million copies in the first week alone. Produced by Brenden O’Brien, the 15-track album went to No.1 in 29 different countries including the UK and the US and received triple platinum certification in Australia. In Thailand, 24-hour Internet radio station Rock Online by Singha is organising its second activity in celebration of the hard rock band's triumphant comeback tomorrow night at 6 at Overtone on RCA in collaboration with Sony-BMG and MTV. “This is the first time we’ve marked the launch of an AC/DC album in Asia,” says Aree Thankam, founder of the online radio and a hardcore fan. “It’s time Thai fans really listened to the band’s new songs, which are simple but have really great power chords. [Guitarist] Angus [Young] is an outstanding rocker.” This second activity will feature a show by Thai rock outfit BrandNew Sunset, who’ll be playing covers of the Australian hard rock band’s songs plus an informal talk by Khunthong Asunee Na Ayuthaya, DJ Seed Norasate Mudkong and Payu Hin Guru – Aree’s pseudonym – on how rock should touch the souls of the new generation. But when Aree is asked when we can expect AD/DC is play in
the Kingdom, he just shakes his head and looks downhearted. “It isn’t easy for top rock banks to come to Thailand.” AC/DC, featuring Brian Johnson on lead vocals, Angus Young on lead guitar, Malcolm Young on rhythm guitar, Cliff Williams on bass, and Phil Rudd on drums, have sold more than 200 million albums worldwide, including 71 million albums in the US.

endezvous with My Alter … Come Dance with Us” is a new Englishlanguage musical about an aspiring hoofer who doesn’t fit the norm, lookswise. A multinational cast of six actors and eight dancers will present a show that’s “not from real life, although it could be”, as playwright and director Sunaina Gulati puts it. A former broadcast journalist, Sunaina staged her first play, “Ek Baar … Phir” (“Once … Again”) four years ago. It was about the triumphs and tribulations of an Indian-Thai family in Bangkok. “It had some bits of dance as well, and the audience liked that,” she says. “For ‘Alter’, I wanted to do something that was outside my comfort zone and at the same time more universal. “Once I starting putting things on paper, it was evident that the story lent itself to dance drama. “The drama gets quite intense in certain parts,” Sunaina says, “so the dance sequences choreographed by Olivier Vinkler from Le Studio provide a fantastic contrast and balance it out.
7
“The fact that I enjoy dancing helped me to appreciate that aspect better. I would say the show’s about 60 per cent drama and 40 per cent dance. “The play is a combination of two extremes. It has a dark side that’s contrasted heavily by the different kinds of dances, ranging from lyrical jazz and hip-hop to ballet, contemporary, tango and salsa. “And,” she says, “the music – a combination of both original compositions as well as compilations of covers – has been created to reflect that. “The dance theme is meshed into story line, and I find it lifts the mood and atmosphere on the stage.”
Nino makes a SPECtacular save Singeractor-TV host Maethanee “Nino” Buranasiri had his personal guru pick an auspicious date – November 29 – for him to introduce Alian Milki eyewear, a division of Milki Thailand, where Nino’s the CEO. A great place was chosen on Phuket, his own band, Be My Guests, rehearsed for the gig and a fashion show was arranged featuring a famous model from Hong Kong. What the guru hadn’t foreseen was that Suvarnabhumi Airport would be unavailable to fly Nino and his Bangkok staff, the model – and the eyewear – to Phuket. Nino stuck with the date anyway. He booked Leelawadee restaurant near his office, hired backup models and showed his Nino x Milki eyewear instead. And, since his band had gone ahead to Phuket and was stuck there, he got singers Paiboonkiat “Pun” Kiewkaew and Songsit “Kob” Rungnopakhunsri to entertain, If everybody could adapt like that, the airport wouldn’t have been closed in the first place.

anish hair-design company Evita Peroni is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a new collection by its top gun, Kate Knudsen – six accessories strung with satin flowers and coloured zirconia. Only 200 sets have been made, and eight of these were sold for Bt20,000 each last week in Bangkok to raise money for the Diabetes Association of Thailand, which enjoys the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The Crown Princess of Denmark was on hand for the brand’s fashion show and to present a certificate from the Danish Export Association and the Prince Henriks Medal of Honour to Central Department Stores president Yuwadee Chirathivat. Evita Peroni founder and chairperson Henning Deichmann said the brand owes its success to his dedicated team. “They like what they do and they like the products,” he said.

“We have a design team that stays up to date with the latest fashion trends around the world and bring out a new collection every other month.” Judith Hassen, the franchise manager for Asia, said Peroni’s chief characteristics are “playful” and “alive”. That certainly applies to the feathered headband in the new line, looking very much like the small hats that are now in vogue. In the spring-summer collection, she pointed out the cinematic inspiration.
“Think about the stylish Hollywood icons, like Audrey Hepburn, and all the 1950s stars. “Add to that our edgy, stylish tones of beige and pear and what we call ‘jet black’. It’s very sexy, like a strong, smoky eye makeup. It accentuates femininity and allows these beautiful ladies to be out of ordinary.” Another important inspiration is nature – the natural blue of the sky and browns of the earth, and the gemstones in their organic shapes.

A typical comment at their shows: “I can’t actually remember what the clothes looked like because I was busy looking at the celebrities.” Saruda and Chinachan saw things differently when they unveiled their new collection at Bangkok International Fashion Week last month. “I want people to think these people are friends they can relate to, not ‘celebrities’,” says Chinachan. “We don’t want this to be about hard sell.” The runway show at Siam Paragon was

ig, bold buffalo-check plaid is impossible to miss this season. Ralph Lauren refined the rugged pattern, showing it on crisp-collared button-down blouses, elegant long skirts and “Ricky” bags on his fall runway. And hipster havens such as American Apparel and LF stores are offering it on everything from dresses to lightweight scarves – all with a street-wear sensibility.
But the easiest way to get the look is with a flannel shirt. Woolrich has been doing a buffalo-check shirt since 1850. Boys departments stock ones which look great on an adult, with a cut that’s nice and slim and three-quarterlength sleeves, perfect to roll or scrunch up. Be sure to cut off the attached black jersey hood so you don't end up looking like you should be downing Capri
Suns while zipping around on a scooter. The leftover seam actually works to make the shirt’s collar stand up, for a preppy touch. A shirt like this makes a tomboy statement, so wear it with skinny jeans and tan or black high boots to keep the look sleek. Or layer a bright solid-coloured, long-sleeved T-shirt underneath so it pops at the neckline and extends beyond the rolled sleeves. If you think less is more in a check, try it on footwear. Converse is doing a classic Chuck Taylor low top, which would liven up a simple winter outfit – a nice alternative to wearing a loud colour. Black and white is the most
ubiquitous colour combination for this print, and it looks a lot less Paul Bunyan than the traditional red and black. Which is good. You’re after nostalgic Americana – not lumberjack.

hen it comes to being beautiful – the “Thai way” – Panadda “Bhum” Wongpudee has it. The voluptuous Miss Thailand 2000 had dreamed of owning a beauty company since she was 15, and now she’s got her own brand, BSC Panadda. A lot of women are sceptical about Thai brands when it comes to beauty products, but Panadda says hers matches
the standards of anything imported. “I studied different types of products,” she says. “I found out what’s used in them and order the same ingredients from overseas to put in mine.” She’s quite proud of the false eyelashes that BSC Panadda markets, saying they’re much cheaper than other brands and as beautiful as any you’ll find. Hard to believe? Let her be the brand ambassador and apply the lashes herself. “When customers see that a product

Got game, get a better PC
You don’t need the latest computer gear to get the most out of today’s plugged-in action
By Heiko Haupt DEUTSCHE PRESSEAGENTUR
T
he term “gaming” may sound like fun, but there’s more work involved than you would imagine. The most important thing is finding the right computer to meet your gaming requirements. Not all computers have the same functions, and some simply will not cut it for serious gamers. More advanced games require constant hardware upgrades. Shoppers should ask fundamental questions about their hardware. Does the game require a computer that can render virtual worlds and breathtaking graphics? Or will an ordinary PC fit the bill?
,,
BUYING AN OLDER CARD USUALLY MEANS YOU’LL HAVE A CARD THAT SUPPORTS YOUR GAME.IN GENERAL, TODAY’S GAMES WERE DEVELOPED FOR THESE CARDS.”
“Most people don’t need the most up-to-date computer with cutting edge processors and graphics cards,” says Michael Wolf of Berlin’s Stiftung Warentest, a consumer-report agency. But serious gamers have different needs. Anyone who wants to keep up with advances in gaming software and ensure that their machine can handle the latest games should take a closer look at their PC’s individual components. Customers should be particularly careful with the graphics card. Your dream machine may come with a 1,024-megabyte graphics card, but that card might not be able to keep up with a high-quality 512-megabyte model. The version that looks initially weaker may perform faster with games. “A high-end graphics card from the last generation – not the most recent generation – is always the best choice,” says Heiko Tomfelde of game publisher Ascaron. “Buying an older card usually means you’ll have a card that supports your game. In general, today’s games were developed for these cards.” Furthermore, Tomfelde notes, switching to older generations of cards can often mean cheaper prices, due to rapid developments in cards. Customers can get tips from tests published online and in magazines. After the graphics card, the computer’s processor and its working memory – the RAM –
are the most important items. Daniel Visarius of GameStar, a German magazine, recommends at least two gigabytes of RAM, but four gigabytes never hurts. He also advises anyone with money to spare invests in a processor such as the Core 2 Quad Q9300. Nonetheless, contemporary top-model gaming machines will not always be cutting edge.
Visarius says gamers should expect to reach their limits fairly quickly. Even if today’s computer can run all current releases at top quality, the next generation of games hits stores six months from now. Some will not work at maximum capacity on older machines, and within a year, none will.

Harris exploded for a career-high 47 points, including 21 in the fourth quarter, and the New Jersey Nets snapped a 14-year drought in Phoenix, with a 117-109 comefrom-behind victory over the Suns yesterday. “It’s good to finally get a win here for the organisation,” said Harris, who shot 14-of-25 from the field, including a pair of three- pointers, and made all 17 free throws while adding eight assists and seven rebounds. “We had enough energy to finish it off.” – DPA

Lawson chides England for pullout Recently deposed Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson, a former Australian Test bowler, has condemned England’s decision to abandon their cricket tour to India over security fears, saying the move smacked of double standards. “It’s interesting that England are heading home and certain players don’t want to play the Test series and yet we go back to 2005, bombs went off in London while there was a big series on there and it didn’t affect one iota the cricket.”– AP
Arsenal’s Robin van Persie scores the first of his two goals to defeat Chelsea 1-2 at Stamford Bridge.
Seething Blues’ boss Scolari demands apologies from ‘blundering’ referees AFP, London
L
uiz Felipe Scolari has demanded that blundering Premier League officials say sorry for their mistakes. The Chelsea manager urged the Football Association (FA) to listen to his plea and take action, saying players and managers apologised for their errors and it was high time officials did the same. Scolari slammed referee Mike Dean and his assistants John Stokes and Simon Beck for their performance in Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to visitors Arsenal in the London derby at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Chelsea were 1-0 ahead thanks to a 30th-minute own goal from Switzerland defender Johan
Djourou when Arsenal’s Netherlands striker Robin van Persie equalised from an offside position in the 59th minute before scoring the winner three minutes later. The equaliser left Scolari fuming and demanding an apology. “Do you hear me speak about the referees any time? Never. For 15 games in the Premier League, five games in the Champions League and more in the Carling Cup I didn’t say anything. But now it’s different,” the Portuguese boss said. “I want only that the referee watches the television, see that it is wrong – the referee and the linesman – and they say sorry. “Only this. Nothing more. They are not God. They make a
mistake and I understand. I don’t want three points, I only want for them, one time, to say ‘sorry – mistake’.” However, Scolari feared his plea would go ignored. “What will happen? Nothing,” he said. “I want the FA to listen and the referee to look and say ‘Okay, I am wrong’. “I am wrong when I pick certain players, the players when they make mistakes and cause a goal or are not covering, all are wrong – but the referee is never wrong. “I am not a coach who says things about the referees. But in the Premier League, many coaches are saying there are big problems with the referees.” The former Brazil manager said Van Persie’s first goal had completely thrown his team’s game plan. “He was one metre in front,

I WANT THE FA TO LISTEN AND THE REFEREE TO LOOK AND SAY ‘OKAY,I AM WRONG.’ Felipe Luis Scolari maybe it was more than a metre in front and it was not offside. What do you think I should think?” he said. “It was a big mistake against us. It was difficult to play and after this, my team lost their concentration and we did not play
well. “I want them to listen to my words and look at this offside. This offside killed my team. “If we won, Arsenal would have been 13 points behind us and the Premier League would have been finished for them.” Chelsea have won just two of their last seven matches and Scolari knows he has much work to do to revive the Blues’ flagging fortunes. Both Arsenal goals came from high balls and the former Portugal manager said combating those and getting more shots on goal were his training pitch priorities ahead of Saturday’s trip to mid-table Bolton. “In the last five games we have not played well,” Scolari said, though he was at a loss as to why. Scolari admitted Sunday’s defeat meant Arsenal were now back in the title race.
Webb was left with no choice but to dismiss Ronaldo, who had earlier clapped the Yorkshire official sarcastically after being shown his first caution. Ferguson insisted Ronaldo’s dismissal had been an innocent mistake, but he refused to criticise Webb. “I have seen the incident again on television and he’s tried to protect his face from the ball hitting it,” Ferguson said. “He thought he had heard a whistle. But I’m not going to go into referees or the decision. “Manchester City came back at us in the second half but we showed great character and resilience, especially after Cristiano’s sending off. I don’t think Manchester City caused us too many problems.” City manager Mark Hughes insisted Webb had no choice but to send off Ronaldo and also revealed Robinho had been forced to have a painkilling injection before kick off to enable him to play. “He hasn’t trained all week so it was no surprise that he looked a little off the pace. He had to have an injection so he could play. “I think we showed United too much respect in the first half. We have come off second best today but we can take heart from the second half performance and it’s no disgrace to lose to a side of United’s quality.”

United played the final 22 minutes down to 10 men at Eastlands after Cristiano Ronaldo’s red card for deliberate handball, but the champions held firm to keep the pressure on Chelsea and Liverpool. “We needed three points. We are behind Liverpool and Chelsea. We are chasing them and we needed to win the game to get ourselves near them,” Ferguson said. “We have had a significant result and I hope it makes a difference. “Our focus was good. In some away games this season our second-half performance has been disappointing. We threw the game away at Liverpool and threw three points away at Everton.” Even Ferguson, notoriously capable of lambasting officials for perceived slights against his team, couldn’t work himself up over Howard Webb’s decision to dismiss Ronaldo in the 68th minute. Ronaldo, who had been booked nine minutes earlier for clattering into Shaun Wright-Phillips, picked-up his second yellow card of the game when he strangely handled a corner from Rooney.

rsenal boss Arsene Wenger demanded that his youthful players learn how to beat the lesser sides if they are to keep their newlyrevived English Premier League title hopes alive. “I have an intelligent group and a very young one and what you have to learn when you are very young is that in every type of game you need to find the resources to win it. To just turn up is not good enough,” said the Frenchman. “I have a talented team but we want to come back with humility and work hard, and we have learnt now that you need that kind of focus in every game, no matter who you play.” Chelsea have now lost two in four at their west London base and Wenger had sympathy for Blues boss Luiz Felipe Scolari. “Sometimes it’s strange in the game,” Wenger said. “We played 49 games unbeaten. When we lost the first game, we couldn’t win for five games. Sometimes the charisma goes when you have a long record and you lose it. “It looks as though the players have been up on Everest and suddenly they come down again and you tell them they have to climb it again.”

TEE QUEEN’S REIGN OVER The finest female golfer the world has ever seen retires AFP, Singapore
wedish superstar Annika Sorenstam admits it is “scary” to be leaving a sport that has been her life for 20 years, as the greatest women’s golfer the world has seen calls it quits. Sorenstam, 38, played her last ever round of LPGA golf at the Lexus Cup on Sunday, beating long-time rival Pak Se-ri as she bowed out a winner with her International team beating Asia 12.5/11.5 in the matchplay tournament. Sorenstam famously keeps a horseshoe in her golf bag as a lucky charm and it has worked wonders with 72 LPGA victories and 17 more on other tours, raising the bar in women’s golf. Among those wins, she claimed 10 Major championships, including three US Women’s Opens, three LPGA

In an amazing run, she clinched 43 of 104 LPGA events from 2001 through 2005 and was named LPGA Player of the Year eight times. Capping it off, she was named to the World Golf Hall of Fame and LPGA Hall of Fame in 2003.
“I’ve always said you should walk away from the game when your heart isn’t in it and my heart has been telling me this for a little while,” she said here. “There are other things in life I want to pursue. I am getting married and we’d love to start a family. “I’ve dedicated my life to golf
all these years and now it’s time to have a little personal time as well as giving back to the game. “It’s a scary time to step away from something you’ve done for 20 years but I have challenges ahead and I am excited about that.” She plans to marry fiance Mike McGee in January and also wants to spend more time on her business dealings including a golf academy and golf course architecture firm. Asked to nominate her most memorable achievements, she insisted there wasn’t a single moment that stood out. “I am lucky that I can’t just chose one particular moment in my career. I am very proud of what I have achieved and it’s been a lot more than I thought I could achieve,” she said. “The five I would single out would be: shooting 59, playing with the men, being part of a winning Solheim Cup team, being inducted to the World Golf Hall of Fame and winning 10 Majors.”
Ho makes Asian team In-form South Korean star SK Ho has been nominated by Asian Team captain Joe Ozaki as the seventh member of the Asian squad that will bid to end Europe’s unbeaten record in the Royal Trophy next month. Ho, one of Asia’s most experienced and consistent golfers, has enjoyed a fantastic year, securing two tournament wins in the highly competitive Japan Tour and bringing his career tournamenttitle tally to a total of eight. “I really hope that the fans will come out in large numbers and support the Asian Team by boosting the spirit of all of our players. In team golf this is vital,” added Ho. Ho joins Prayad Marksaeng, Thongchai Jaidee, Charlie Wi, Toru Taniguchi, and Hideto Tanihara and Liang Wenchong of China. – AGENCIES

PAIN AT PALERMO Milan’s defeat hands leaders Inter six-point lead AFP, Rome
C Milan crashed 3-1 at Palermo on Sunday to hand city rivals and reigning champions Inter Milan a six-point lead at the top of the Serie A table following their 2-1 success over Napoli. Milan remain third on goal difference behind Juventus who beat Reggina 4-0 on Saturday in a match which saw veteran Italian striker Alessandro Del Piero hit his 250th goal for the club. Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti tried to look on the bright side despite the defeat. “After three months of good results I wouldn’t say this defeat is welcome but it is useful,” he said. “For a while we’ve lacked attention and intensity. Tonight we didn’t play with rhythm. Our players were subdued all over

AC Milan’s Ronaldinho is floored while fighting for the ball with Palermo’s Mattia Cassani. the pitch, we played to Palermo’s rhythm and failed to play our own game.” Palermo dominated for an hour but Milan had the better chances of the first half. Home goalkeeper Marco Amelia saved a Ronaldinho
penalty on 27 minutes after he had clattered into Pato. Ronaldinho also hit the bar in first half stoppage time direct from a free-kick but Palermo had enjoyed more pressure. Five minutes into the second period Fabrizio Miccoli faked to
shoot on the edge of the box, made space and then curled a right-footer around Christian Abbiati. Just before the hour mark Fabio Liverani chipped the ball into the area and Brazilian forward Edison Cavani rose above Paolo Maldini to head home. Brazilian Simplicio was left completely unmarked in the box to head in the third 10 minutes from time from a Federico Balzaretti cross. Ronaldinho scored a consolation from the spot seven minutes from time after he was brought down by Cesare Bovo. At the San Siro, Inter coach Jose Mourinho blasted the club’s fans for jeering Brazilian full-back Maicon. “We need the support of our fans. I don’t like it when a section of our fans in a match such as this start whistling a player for a misplaced pass,” he moaned. “Maicon played despite an injury and despite both myself and the medical staff advising him not to.”

njury-hit Villarreal underlined their Spanish league title credentials with a 2-1 victory over rock-bottom Recreativo Huelva on Sunday to cut the gap on leaders Barcelona to four points. Despite missing seven players, including influential midfielder Marcos Senna, Villarreal had enough to overcome a Recreativo side who
have won just once all season. Villarreal were fortunate to go ahead when Santi Cazorla’s shot from outside the area went in off a defender after 26 minutes. Ariel Ibagaza doubled the lead with a well-struck freekick before Recreativo pulled a goal back through a penalty from Adrian Colunga after Pascal Cygan brought down Marco Ruben. “We had a good game and in
my opinion deserved more goals,” said Villarreal coach Manuel Pellegrini. “After our second goal we were clearly superior although we didn’t take our chances. We won in spite of missing a lot of players.” A Ruben Baraja header gave 10-man Valencia a 3-2 victory in a pulsating encounter with Real Betis at the Mestalla to keep them in the championship hunt.

Everton face striker shortage A F P , London
E
verton manager David Moyes faces a striker crisis after Ayegbeni Yakubu and Louis Saha limped off during his side’s 1-0 win at Tottenham. Forward Yakubu suffered an Achilles injury which will rule him out for the rest of the season after falling awkwardly following a challenge with Ledley King. His replacement, France hitman Saha, fared little better as he aggravated his hamstring injury to deepen Moyes’ problems in attack. With James Vaughan requiring surgery on his knee, Moyes will be looking for loan signings when the January transfer window opens to bolster his attacking options. “It’s a massive blow for us,” Moyes said of Yakubu’s loss.

Whelan insists he does not want to lose Heskey for nothing and could sell him when the transfer window reopens in January if he fails to agree a new deal. “He could cost us two, three or four million if that goes on to next summer, so we’ll have to see.”
