Stooshe: (from left to right) Alex, Courtney and Karis
The three girls got together by coincidence: Courtney and Alex were out shopping individually at Topshop when a stylist – now their current creative director, Jo Perry - snapped them up and asked if they could sing. They were put together as a band, and along came Karis, who went to the professional BRIT school with Adele herself.

Little did they know that one year later they’d end up climbing their way through the UK Singles Chart, ending up as number three with the song Black Heart. Even the one and only Simon Cowell had to cope with Stooshe turning him down, afraid he’d restrict their artistic freedom.
The eReader vs. The Book With Christmas around the corner, should you be putting a pile of books on your list or an electronic reader?...
The trio speak their minds – blatantly. When Courtney came out of the closet to her parents she announced: “You know I don’t
Alex and shorthaired tomboy Courtney, the group is a natural point of attention. During the last year, they have also accompanied Nicky Minaj as well as J-Lo on their UK tours as their special guests. “There’s so much more for us to do. Even though we’ve done a lot this year, we’ve loved it. Now we want to start taking it out of the UK, we just can’t wait to travel and grow, “ says Alex.
Nominated Best Newcomers In just one year, Stooshe has blown the UK away. Latest on their list of conquests was a nomination for Best Newcomers in the 2012 ‘Music of Black Origin’ (MOBO) Awards, alongside artists such as Conor Maynard and Misha B. “When we attended the MOBOs last year, no one knew who we were,” recalls Courtney. “We tried to make a statement, but when I think about what I wore… that was a statement in itself.” But, despite waiting anxiously “We were up against amazing people with amazing talent. But it’s just ‘oh my God’ that we’ve actually been given the chance to be acknowledged for what we do,“ says Courtney.
From 10 people to 12,000 fans Stooshe has attended several festivals the past year, and have seen their fan base literally grow before their eyes. “I think the festival that stood out for us was Wireless festival. When we did it last year, there were about ten people watching us. This year, there were 12,000,” says Karis.
“We love what we do. Hopefully positive things are still to come, that’s how it’s worked out so far. We’ve been very lucky.” “But also V-festival - Oh my God, that was just amazing. The tent was full and everyone was singing Black Heart, all under umbrellas because of the rain. We all had a moment and we were like, ‘wow!’ “We all took our mics and held them out, and we felt like we didn’t have to sing anymore! It was amazing,” Courtney reminisces.
The road ahead hoping to work with some of the big names. Karis immediately mentions Rihanna. “We’ll hopefully have a few awards and will be working on our sixth album. We love what we do. Hopefully positive things are still to come, that’s how it’s worked out so far. We’ve been very lucky”, says Alex. The future looks equally bright for this fun-loving, hard-working group. “We are going to do a lot of gigs and promoting around the country, and hopefully the album will do well enough for us to do a little tour. We just want to travel, meet new people and make music we love.”
Upcoming Live Shows
The colourful trio latest single is a remake of TLC’s “Waterfalls” and their debut album ‘Stooshe’ will be out in March 2013.

Bloc Party live (above) and drummer, Matt Tong (right)
How’s the Bloc Party tour going? It’s weird, we haven’t actually played these songs in front of anyone in the UK before but it’s been really great seeing the fans response to the shows.
Album Review: Mumford & Sons Clearly Marcus Mumford is a believer of the time old phrase, ‘If it ain’t broke,
Are you getting along nicely? I think so. We’re all really tired at the moment as we didn’t get much of a break between the last tour and this one. We are all a bit jet lagged and where these would have been times when we would normally drift apart and get a bit cranky, we’ve actually been alright so far.
The eReader vs. The Book
Splitting rumours meant people were shocked you released a fourth album. Were you surprised? It’s funny because I think by the time the rumours started coming out we already had started making the record. However, leading up to it none of us were sure if we actually still had chemistry as a group of musicians to work together. So yeah, we were all kind of surprised we made another record.
With Christmas around the corner, should you be putting a pile of books on your list or an electronic reader?...
Was there extra pressure having not worked together in so long? because no one was expecting anything we felt we were free to do whatever we wanted. NME described your album as ‘daring, deep and confused’. Would you agree with that? I think that’s a fair assessment of the record, I mean it’s been pointed out a few times that it seems quite disjointed, a lot
When you’re not doing music focused things what are you doing? I’m just lying in bed crying normally, weeping profusely. No I’m kidding; I live in New York so when I have free time I like to do things like go to the museum. It’s very hard to run out of things to do in New York.
“A lot of the time you’ll find Kele giggling in the corner at X Factor clips. He’s a huge fan.” Do you still feel like a tourist? Only when it’s pointed out that I’m British because of my accent. It does sometimes feels like I’ve been handed a key to unlock the door of a strange country. I guess I do really do a lot of touristy things, especially when people come to visit. Lastly, can you tell us something not many people know about each Bloc Party member? him giggling in the corner of the dressing room at X-Factor clips. Russell - Last year he produced a record in Japan, not many people know he is an aspiring record producer. Gordon - He is secretly a huge Simple Minds fan, they’ve been his favourite band since he was a teenager and some of their music inspires his playing. Matt Tong - I think people think I’m generally kind of polite and intellectual but in actual truth I’m really aggressive. I think that’s why I’m a drummer. I have a real anger management problems that all come out on the drums. Words by Stacey Tonks

Muse - The 2nd Law
Stooshe Steal The Show
I suppose every band is allowed one bad album. The one where they tried to experiment a tad too much. After all, you have to cross the line once to truly understand where it lies. For Muse that was their 2009 release, The Resistance, which we’ll all be quick to forget.

But a second, successive poor album is inexcusable. With their sixth album, The 2nd world.
Album Review: Mumford & Sons
It seems this album is an exploration of who Matt Bellamy wants to be next, and has come to the following conclusion - he wants to be Freddie Mercury. He also wants to be Skrillex. He wants to be in an ‘80s funk band. He wants to be a pop sensation, a classical musician and a glam-rock superstar. At various points in the album, Muse start to sound like Queen, Nero, Take That, Beethoven, Scissor Sisters, U2, and did I mention Queen? And not anywhere near enough time like the Muse of old. If I’m honest the album does have some stellar moments. Album opener, Supremacy, is both Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir and Bond theme in equal measures – which can only be a good thing. Animals draws on some classic Santana guitar and Follow Me scrapes the bottom of the dubstep barrel, both though

However, he decided to change his mind entirely this year and go completely in the opposite direction. 2012 saw tuition fees rise to a staggering £9000 per annum, despite public demonstrations – both peaceful and those that turned out, er, not so peaceful – led by outraged students. 5. #YOLO
Q&A: MATT TONG
2012 was the year in which everybody realised that life is short and if you want to do something, you better do it now. Short for ‘you only live once,’ YOLO, or hashtag #YOLO online, empowered a generation to be the best they could possibly be, for life is too short not to. The best examples of people living a YOLO lifestyle can be found on Twitter. Here, people talk of skydiving and then immediately taking exams, while others fondly recount stories of removing their USB stick without opting to safely remove hardware. We have 2012 and the acronym YOLO to thank for our newfound zest for life, and for that, the world is grateful. Unless you’re James Bond that is, in which case: YOLT.

2012 was the year in which everybody realised that life is short and if you want to do something, you better do it now.
