Distinguished Speaker—Wednesday, June 24 Distinguished Speaker
Alexina Medley Principal & CEO Warren Easton Charter High School Though she started her professional life in pharmacology in her native Nassau, Bahamas, it did not take Alexina Medley long to figure out that she needed to be in education. She found that moving into education made her “happy because I think I positively affect the lives of young people. Moreover, helping young people has become a lifelong pursuit.” Medley started her career as a special education teacher, where she provided her students with the resources needed to graduate from high school with a regular diploma. After seventeen years in special education, Medley moved from the classroom to the Central Office of New Orleans Public Schools to expand her expertise. After Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005, Medley was instrumental in the re-opening of Warren Easton High School, which was devastated by flood waters. She worked tirelessly with the Easton Alumni Association and teachers to research the viability of charter schools and complete the charter school application so that Easton could re-open for the 2006-2007 school year. Now in her ninth year as principal of the Warren Easton Charter High School, Medley finds it “has been challenging, but my personal philosophy, ‘do the best you can and make the best of what you have’ has become my motto for these difficult and trying times.” Medley has dedicated herself to that philosophy. Medley has been instrumental in the continuous improvement of Warren Easton and has dedicated herself to increasing student achievement. She was named as Principal for the 2000 Summer LEAP Remediation and Carnegie Unit Recovery programs. She holds a BA and Masters Degree from Xavier University of Louisiana.

From 2006 to 2012, NACSA managed the Louisiana Recovery School District’s application process for new charter schools, and from 2011 to 2014 provided third-party review for Orleans Parish School Board charter applications. New research looks at the relationship between these rigorous and comprehensive selection processes, the strong subsequent outcomes for approved schools, and how this work has improved education opportunities for thousands of New Orleans students. Updated Description: The session will assess multiple financing structures and programs to minimize new facility financing costs and examine the financial and operational requirements to prepare a school for a higher credit rating (or implied equivalent) when the school is ready for a long-term financing for its permanent facilities. Historically, the interest rate on a non-rated or lower-rated charter school financings has been priced at approximately 1.25% more than a higherrated charter school financings. The interest rate savings could be significant over the bond term. Replication of high-quality charter schools has become an increasingly important lever in expanding the reach of the sector. In this workshop, nationally-recognized leaders in charter school replication will help participants think through the key questions organizations considering replication must answer. Updated Presenters: Eric Chan, Charter School Growth Fund; James Merriman, New York City Charter School Center; Adrian Morgan, Algiers Charter School Association; Roblin Webb, Freedom Prep Charter Schools Transforming to Personalized Learning Environments Wednesday, June 24, 10:00 am – 11:00 am Leadership
••• 208/209
Charter schools use their unique position within the education landscape to develop innovative environments focused on academic achievement and student success. Increasingly, leaders are looking to technology to support teaching and learning. It is crucial that a transformation to personalized learning begins with a vision including intentional outcomes for all stakeholders and not with technology leading the way. This session will share practices from those building powerful edtech ecosystems in schools across the country. Updated Presenters: Chris Liang-Vergara, LEAP Innovations; Susan Patrick, International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL)
