G etting a Driver’s License

If you plan to drive in Georgia, state law requires that you obtain a Georgia license within 30 days of moving here. To transfer a valid license from another state or from the District of Columbia, you must show:

• Your valid out-of-state driver’s license or one that has expired within the last two years

• At least one original or certified document to prove your primary identity, such as a birth certifi cate (state-issued or certified copy, certified naturalization document, immigration ID card, valid passport or military ID

• Appropriate documents proving your name change (such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or adoption decree) if your current name is different from the name on your primary identity document

• At least two documents to prove your Georgia residency, such as a lease or housing contract, rent receipt, utility bill, bank statement and/or employer verification (on employer’s letterhead, stating address)

• At least one document to prove your Social Security number

R egistering to Vote

Once you have your Driver’s License, you may register to vote in-person, by mail, email or online with the Board of Elections.

You will need the following:

• In-State Driver’s License or ID card

• Social Security Number

Within 30 days of moving to Georgia, you must apply in your county of residence for a Georgia license plate for each of your vehicles. For registration, proof of liability insurance is required by Georgia law, along with current registration, a Georgia driver’s license, title and name/address of lien holder or copy of lease agreement and a power of attorney from the leasing company.

New residents must pay 50 percent of a title ad valorem tax fee (7 percent of the vehicle’s fair market value) within 30 days of moving here. The remaining 50 percent must be paid within the next 12 months.
