variations L-Shaped Stable Block
E-Shaped Stable Block
Especially suited to a corner location, this is a very popular style. Both practical and attractive, this layout can provide extra protection from the elements and allows easy viewing and access to all areas.
This arrangement is ideal for big commercial yards which require distinct separated areas but still require shared facilities in a central location, such as workshops, tack rooms, hay stores and accommodation blocks.
U-Shaped Stable Block
‘All-in-a-Line’ Stable Block
This design allows for easier management of horses and staff, so is particularly well suited to larger working yards where efficiency is key. By it’s nature, this U-Shape also provides excellent shelter from the wind.
Away from all the complex layout options, the ‘all-in-a-line’ option is ideally suited for the small private yard and is often the simplest and most cost effective option. The above building shows a tiled roof option. All our stable buildings can be constructed to support a tiled roof.

American Barns American Barns are becoming more and more popular as an alternative to exterior stabling as they keep everything under one roof and are warm and dry during the winter but cool in the summer. Arranged around a central passageway, American Barns are fast becoming a favourite in working yards, such as liveries and riding schools. American Barns tend to make for a better, more efficient working environment for horse and work force. In summer cool air can flow through the building with efficient use of louvered windows at the rear of the building, whilst in winter American Barns are warm and dry providing excellent shelter whilst mucking out and grooming. You can choose from 3 ranges: Standard, Deluxe and Superior:

Static Field Shelters & Stores The ideal way to protect your animals from the cold winds in winter and the flies in summer. Openings are 2.1m (7’) wide but should you require this can be increased or decreased. The number of openings will depend on the size of the building. But we would suggest that larger buildings are supplied with 2 openings to prevent one horse being cornered by another. Field Shelters can be supplied with or without a 1.2m (4’) overhang. All the timber used in the manufacturing process have been pressure impregnated with Tanalith E®. Timber which has been treated in this way requires no further treatment.

Tiled Roofed Equestrian Buildings Tiled Roof Building Features Buildings with a tiled roof require an upgraded specification and include the following: Specialist roof trusses complete with wind bracing to comply with building regulations 100mm x 50mm (4” x 2”) timber framing
A slate, clay or cedar shingle tiled roof can be a stunning alternative to the roofing finish of your stables. We can adapt any of our equestrian buildings accordingly. A tiled roof changes the way a building is constructed; wall panels require upgrading, flitch beams need to be fitted above windows and doorways etc. In addition specialist roof trusses need to be fitted to comply with building regulations. And it’s all dependent on your choice of pitch and tile. By working with you and understanding your needs, Chart Stables can design the right roof for your unique situation.
Clay tiles are either machine or hand made. You could also choose reclaimed if your surroundings require it.
Cedar shingles can be used as an alternative to conventional tiles.
Slate tile options, like clay tiles include both machine and hand made.

The Finishing Touches Everything at Chart Stables is manufactured to your requirements, even down to finishes and colours. We offer a variety of different wood / roof finishes and colours to suit your taste and personalise your new building.
Roof Finishes
Onduline
Felt and Felt Tiles
Cedar Shingles
Clay & Slate Tiles
Onduline is a tried and tested roofing material which is used by the majority of stable manufacturers. Black onduline is supplied as standard on all of our buildings, but red, brown and green are also available.
Felt is a durable and economic way to weatherproof your timber building, and felt tiles can be accepted as a replacement for clay tiles by some local authorities. Our felt products are available in a choice of four colors
Cedar shingles can be used as an attractive and natural looking alternative to conventional tiles, and require little structural work to the building as they are considerably lighter than clay or slate tiles.
A variety of clay and Slate tiles are available, to suit your new building and the local surroundings. These do however significantly alter the way in which the building needs to be constructed, and require specialist trusses, so please let us know if are intending to have a tiled roof as early on in the design process as possible, so we can liase with your roofing contractor to meet their specification requirements.
Wood Finishes
Weatherboard ( Also known as featheredge )
Shiplap
Log Lap

Finishes & Treatments
Environmentally friendly TANALITH E® is a waterborne product based on copper triazole technology. Copper is derived from recycled sources and triazoles are organic biodegradable biocides, commonly used to protect many of the food crops we eat. TANALISED E® pressure treated timber is usually specified for both in and out of ground contact applications where there is a medium to high risk of decay or insect attack.
Exceptional Timber Protection Pressure Treated Timber When purchasing your new timber building, one of the most important things to consider is the way in which your new building has been treated to protect it, and if further treatment is going to be required. To ensure maximum life expectancy and prevent the need for further protection, we manufacture your building with TANALISED® E pressure treated timber. TANALISED E® pressure treated timber has been impregnated with TANALITH E®, under controlled conditions in a vacuum pressure impregnation plant. This treatment must not be mistaken for dipped or sprayed timber, which would require treating every year. ✓ Effective long-term protection against fungal and insect attack.
Colour Treatment
✓ Proven performance, widely used and accepted worldwide.
Should you wish to decorate your building to suit your own individual taste or to comply with the local authorities, we suggest using Restol® available from most good DIY Stores. Restol® offers the following benefits:
✓ Appealing natural green colour, blending perfectly with nature. ✓ Impregnated using vacuum pressure technology. ✓ Conforms to new European Standards and individual countries’ national requirements. ✓ An established and proven alternative to traditional (CCA) treated timber.

Groundwork & Preparations All our buildings will require a preprepared base finished prior to assembly.
Project Completion Approximately one week prior to the arranged delivery date, we will contact you to confirm that your project is on schedule, the time of delivery on the day and any final details which will ensure the smooth, prompt delivery of your new building. On the delivery day it is imperative that our team can get easy and close access to the erecting site. They will work productively and courteously and leave the site tidy. On completion, our senior erector will require you to ensure everything has been carried out to your satisfaction. He will then require the final payment.
The extent of the base works will vary depending on the building you are having, the ground conditions and the amount of money you want to spend. In some cases the base works can be as expensive as the buildings themselves. It is important to take the right advice. Your local builder, groundwork contractor or Building Inspector will be the best person to advise you, however in this section we will give you some insight as to what you may require.
Stables Stables will require a concrete base and a single course of semi-engineering brickwork. The base will depend on ground conditions but in most cases 150mm of compacted hardcore or sub-base material, a damp proof membrane, followed by 100 - 150mm
Our overriding aim at Chart Stables is to ensure that you have many years of enjoyment from your building.
Quality Assured Manufacturing
Construction-Planning.indd 48
of concrete which should be sulphateresisting in order to stop animal urine destroying the concrete, will be sufficient. A single course of semiengineering brickwork should then be laid in accordance with the plan sent to you by us. Drainage should also be a consideration as rainwater from the roof can be considerable.
Field Shelters Field Shelters ideally require a concrete base but clearly people are less inclined to do this. As an option we would suggest that a timber plinth be laid but the most important thing to remember is that whatever you do it must be flat and level. As a suggestion 150mm x 75mm treated timber or railway sleepers can be used as a plinth.
Garages/Workshops Garage/Workshop bases are constructed in the same way as stable bases but without the need for acid inhibitor.
Garden Buildings Your Garden building, depending on its size and construction, may not require a concrete base. All our Garden buildings include a floor and it is possible to erect these buildings onto 75mm x 75mm treated bearers laid in accordance with our plans. Alternatively paving slabs laid on sand or a mortar mix is a further option.
Buildings with tiled roofs Due to the extra weight of a building with a tiled roof, and because Building Regulations will almost certainly be required, it is important that you take professional advice.
Full groundworks specifications are available on request.

Free Planning & Advice Service Our experts can talk you through the complete design and planning process as well as providing free elevated drawings. Do I need Planning Permission? Whilst this will not be the answer you will want to hear, in 99% of cases the answer is yes. We would always suggest that a telephone call to your local Council is a good idea. They will give you some good, free advice and in most cases visit you. Listening to their suggestions in the first place may possibly save you time and money. Whilst we cannot give you the advice that a Planning Consultant can, we are able to offer you a helping hand, based on our experience over the years.
Can I build stables in my garden? Very possibly yes. However, you must be able to meet the following criteria. The buildings must be 1m away from your boundaries, 5m from your house, not exceed 50% of your garden and be less than 4m high.
Do I need planning for a commercial stable yard?
Are there any environmental issues that need considering?
Yes, this is compulsory.
Approximately 8 weeks.
Yes, you should consider what you are going to do with dirty wood shavings and manure. Possibly a local farmer could help you dispose of it – in this day-and-age burning is not the answer. Foul water may have to be considered and therefore a soakaway built.
Will I need to have planning permission for a field shelter?
How do I go about getting planning permission?
Yes.
Firstly, you will need to ask your local council for the necessary forms. These are not as daunting as you may think. The Council will need a scaled site plan, clearly marked with the position of your new buildings and six copies of elevated drawings. We can supply elevated drawings to you, free of charge, if required. Finally, a cheque will need to be sent to the Council along with your application.
How long will planning permission take to obtain?
Do mobile buildings require planning permission? We believe no, as long as you can demonstrate that they can be moved at regular intervals. However, we do think that sooner or later this loop-hole will be closed.
Can I replace old buildings? Yes, but always make sure you are building like-for-like. Do not exceed the original ground floor area and do not exceed the original height. We would suggest that you take some photographs of the original buildings.
