Seniors calling Chartwell retirement residences home are aging in place longer than ever before. In 2020, we put strategies and training in place to help our staff and services better adapt to residents’ changing care needs. In fact, we helped reduce the number of resident departures to hospital and long term care by 18% and 22% respectively during the pandemic.

FINDING A NEW HOME FOR MOM

In April, my Dad passed away from cancer. My Mom, who is 88, has never lived alone and suddenly found herself very lonely. In July I realized that she cannot live alone any longer, and I knew there was a Chartwell very close to my house, so set up a tour.
I met with Janet [the Retirement Living Consultant] and was super impressed with the location. Although my Mom was reluctant at first, she came around pretty quickly. I do feel the warmth of the team at the residence helped my Mom feel comfortable leaving her home in Ballantrae that she shared with my Dad for 20 years.
My Mom officially moved in on Sunday. The entire staff have been very accommodating, and although they are under some tough circumstances right now with COVID-19, they really helped accommodate our move and were wonderful about letting my husband and I go in and set everything up for her.
Here is a picture of my Mom in her apartment on Sunday after we officially moved her in. It’s been wonderful so far and I’m sure it will only get better for her.
