R ESIDENCE To design a luxury residence in Bhopal for a bussiness man, the house must shelter one joint family consisting of grandparents and children. A separate study room for childrens and one guest room should be provided. Site does not have contours. Access road is on the northern side of the plot. There are few existing trees on the site, so the build area is planned without disturbing them.

A grand entrance was designed which leads to the hall cum living room. Double height living room is provided with interesting element for daylighting which facilitate skylight as well as sidelight. Figure below shows the conceptual section of the element in which the long glasses are used in between the RCC beams to allow light.

P UBLIC LIBRARY To design a public library proposed in Tranquebar district, as the old public library is completely damaged and the whole collection of books is shifted to one house temporarily. The challenge was to make the library one among the iconic buildings of Tranquebar. Tranquebar being India’s hub of tourism, a separate space should be designed for tourists with souvenir shop, cafe and galllery about Tranquebar.

SITE ANALYSIS

Site

CONCEPT

Sea

The Site area is 1412.3 sq m. Two access roads in South and East directions. Other two sides are surrounded by buildings. Sea is around 100m away from the site on Eastern side.

The basic concept for Library design was Shell with Pearl. Form of the library was derived from the shell and the zoning was done in such a way that the first floor is the pearl being protected by the ground floor and the roof as shell. First floor contains public access areas and the gronud floor contains administrative area.

Sea breeze coming from east ensures cooling but at the same time mineral and salt present in it causes corrosion of metal.

14

FORM EVOLUTION

In the process of bringing the form from the concept, first step was bringing the curve into the plan and giving the offset for first floor walls from ground floor walls, so as to create the side view of a shell.

1

As the given site was L shaped, one more unit was taken, rotated 90 degree anti-clockwise and placed intersecting the previous unit such that the curve points outward. 2 At the intersection of those two units, one service tower was added so that the services will have easy access from everywhere. To hide the plumbing and other services for enhancing aesthetical values, screen was provided. As the profile of service tower was rectangular and was not going well with the shell profile the screen was divided into 3-3 parts on both the sides and every part was given different height to add interest to it.

H UDCO TROPHY | 2018-19 JUROR’S CHOICE AWARD

Group Project Senior Member, Design Team Brief: To design a vibrant riverfront along the river of a metropolitan city with minimum site dimensions of 125m X 500 m. The site should be medium to densely populated. The aim of the riverfront is to bring the people back to the river, who are turning their back towards the river. Site Selection: Considering all aspects, the River Cooum in Chennai stood out. This river had been so harshly mistreated, owing to the city’s industrial development, that the connection between the river and its people was almost completely lost. Once considered a holy river, it has now been reduced to a sewage line. This constantly neglected river must not be ignored any longer, and proper actions have to be taken to restore it before it completely dies out.

Whole Stretch of 16 km was taken The entire stretch of 16 kms was chosen as part of the site as it falls under the corporation of Chennai, where the river gets most polluted. Moreover, for the effort to come to fruition, the entire stretch has to be acted upon so that the river does not get polluted anywhere. The Chennai port – Maduravoyal Expressway stretches 19 km beginning at Chennai Port, traveling along the banks of the Cooum until Koyambedu, and then along the median of NH4 thereon till it reaches Maduravoyal. Protests by environmentalists paused the construction but it has now been resumed after being relentlessly pushed by the central government.

Any typical city that grows and evolves, can be compared with the human body. Right from its origination to its decline, the life of a city is analogous to that of humans on innumerable counts. A waterbody, like the umbilical cord, nourishes civilizations during infancy to flourish and grow along its banks. It can also be called as the heart of the city as it serves the needs of the settlements. Just as the human organs are affected by unhealthy habits such as drinking and smoking, water bodies are affected by anthropogenic industrial actions resulting in their degradation. In the proposed riverfront, a number of practices have been adopted which trigger awareness, encourage eco friendly behaviour and reward visitors with a healthy lifestyle, while bettering the city. These practices are not necessarily ones people follow in their daily lives, and might be unique to the riverfront alone. But with the gradual increase in the people visiting the riverfront, the practices will soon be adopted by people in their daily lives as well. The riverfront will hence act as a catalyst to the city’s rise to sustainability.
