JASON BLASSO
The Alchemy of Colour came about from working on my fist book of poems, Summa Neologica. The structure for the poems and a lot of my other work comes from the Paracelsian elementary system combined with the color wheel and gray scale. There’s an order to it that satisfies me on a fundamental level. It’s a simple story: From out of the darkness of primal chaos a point of light appears. From that quitessential point of light, in descending order of lightness and mutability, the elements appear: yellow air gas, red fire plasma, blue water liquid, and brown earth solid. From the all pervading spirit of animating energy to the matter of the body, the primary elements form the three essences: green plant immobile, orange animal mobile, purple human intelligence. From human intelligence, the universe can look upon and know itself back through the essences and elements to the one light and primordial darkness.
