It's Important to Start on the Right Path You've likely heard the expression "If you fail to plan, then plan to fail" This really applies when you want to grow organic vegetables. As a matter of fact planning is the most important thing you have to do. You don't want to do all this work and end up having to go back to the supermarket again for those pesticide laden fruits and vegetables. So let's look at a plan for how to grow organic vegetables. Your Organic Vegetable Garden Checklist • You need a source of water close by to your organic garden. Can you install an irrigation system with a timer to this water source? Avoid over and under watering your garden. Either case will cause damage to the plants. You need to perform consistent and proper watering throughout the growing season. Determine how your plot is facing. If you live in the Northern Hemisphere then you should have it facing south. The opposite is the case for living in the Southern Hemisphere. This assures that you get plenty of the morning and afternoon sun. Your garden requires approximately 7-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Clear any trees that may be blocking the sunlight for your garden. • Determine what type of mulch you are going to use. Of course, since this is an organic garden you want to use organic mulch. Compost is great for mulch because of its benefits and plant feeding qualities. What are the vegetables you want to grow and how much work are you willing to do? Select vegetables or fruits that are conducive for the area you live. Even if you want a certain fruit or vegetable, it may not do well where you live. You can contact local agencies to assist you with your choices. When planting, do not put the crops too close to each other. Follow the recommended supplier guidelines for planting and actually be more conservative and spread the plants out further. When starting out don't overplant. Begin small and only plant what you will use. Use quality plants and not "cheap" transplants that will die shortly after planting. Pests and Critters Controlling the pests is an important part of planning to grow organic vegetables. You can opt to plant disease and insect resistant plant types. This would reduce risking having your organic

vegetable garden destroyed by pests. Options such as using human hair for spreading around plants or planting harmful insect plants have been chosen to combat such problems. Making Your Own Compost When you plan to grow organic vegetables, making your own compost can be quite an adventure. Compost can be accumulated by adding organic items in a pile but be careful not to end up with nothing more than a smelly mess. Items such as grass clippings, biodegradable food waste, old plants, flowers and weeds are examples of compost ingredients. Avoid fecal matter from cats or dogs. While you can use such things as hedge clippings these things are slow to breakdown and are not the best choice.
