Is organic vegetable gardening for you? It just may be the perfect answer for being able to grow healthy vegetables at home, and save a ton of money at the produce counter! The rising cost of all produce has really dug deep into our pockets over the past couple of years. Fuel expenses for producing the crops, and shipping them to the shelves of our local grocery stores has been the main culprit. In addition to the high cost is the fact the most of these veggies are loaded with chemicals that cannot possibly be good for us. From fertilizers and pesticides, to the plastic tasting film sprayed on at the store to keep them looking fresh, most vegetables we get at the grocery are chemical infested. So, how do we get chemical free vegetables? Simple! We grow our own, and we do it organically! Growing an organic garden simply means we do not use any chemicals such as, commercial fertilizers and pesticides. When we grow organically, nature is our source of all nutrients. While that may sound like it is going to be a lot of work to get a perfect crop of veggies, just the opposite is true. By planting the vegetables in a smaller, concentrated fashion, it becomes easier for nature to furnish all the natural pesticides, such as birds and lady bugs, needed to grow perfect, great tasting veggies! If you are new to organic gardening, or if you have limited yard space, you may want to start small. Stake out a 4' X 8' area that gets at least 8 hours of sunshine each day. Prepare your soil by spading off grass, along with the top 3 or 4 inches of dirt. Loosen the dirt with the spade, shovel in some natural compost or sheep manure, and you are ready to go. As you fill each 4 X 8 foot area, and your confidence begins to grow, you can add extra spaces if you have room. You can begin planting early season vegetables, such as lettuce, onions and radishes even while the night time temperatures are cool. Mid March for most of the country, but dates will vary with the severity of winter. You can plant a few potatoes as early as late February in some parts of the country. Sweet corn, and tomatoes will need warmer soil, and for most of us that means late April or early May. This method of gardening will not only allow you to grow healthy vegetables at home, it will save you hundreds of dollars each year, too!
