Context/Brief The hub of train station in Bangkok, The bangkok station (Hua Lamphong Station) is a total appxo. 190,000sqm land plot which has been used 104 years for transportation across the country. Recently, the state railway of Thailand plans to move the hub of trains to new station “Bang Sue” and redevelop “Hua Lamphong Station” as creative district. “Lanes of Memories” is a program proposal for the architecture design for development studio, KMUTT. Connecting with existing one Depot building, an existing building in the station is where the trains are being repaired, and maintained daily. The depot building can be seen as a warehouse/factory prototype architecture with the distinctive roof. Proposal Program The hub of train station is a point of meetings and departure, story of communities and city of Bangkok. In a way Hua Lamphong station is witnessing and recording from historical events to daily life of the Bangkokian and visitors. So, as a metaphor, It is just like a camera. 27 | ART IN CLAY MUSEUM & CREATIVE INSTITUTE | 2016

Context/Brief Art in Clay Museum and Clay Creative Institute is a final graduation project of 3rd batch Yangon School of Interior Design under the category “Public space”. In Myanmar, potteries stuck in the unnoticeable corner at every household, and clay only associates with the lower income families, which most people do not recognize the value of the craft. Thus, this project try to create a new kind of space and engage interactions within the building in and out.

Location The site location for the project had been chosen at over 120 years old colonial building located at Insein, Yangon, formerly it was Government Technical Institute (GTI). The school opened in 1985, and shut down in 1996 for political crisis in the country. Therefore, in this project, the existing building is used to imagine new program and give a new interpretation for the development of the city, and experiences. Concept The wave, curve come from the relationship of movement and connection of hand and clay, which welcome the visitors with unexpected experience and walk along with the line. Inside, a storyline program are structured, and Outside, recreation space and area are provided with a merging extruded dome. Ground Floor spaces are provided for museum and story-telling whereas 1st floor spaces provide spaces for institute and trainings for long-term sustainable eco-system. A conceptual renovation design for a symmetrical colonial building, inserting curve and fluidity in the existing building provides groundbreaking and controversial approach for breaking the norms of typical approach to old colonial building and giving a bold manifestation for modern Myanmar.

53 | A SENSE OF HOME | 2022

Context/Brief A sense of home is the research project and design proposal, which studied the walk-up apartment housing units in Yangon, Myanmar. In the Yangon urban landscape, one could not help, but notice old buildings from the colonial period along with condominium developments recently, and many walk-up apartment buildings to accommodate the urbanization, growing population and social-economic status of Myanmar people. Walkup apartments were built and popular after the British colonial period (around 1950s) and are still built up to today due to its cost-effectiveness and to accommodate low to mid-income residents in the metropolitan Yangon. Approximately 90% of apartment buildings are walk-up apartments. The common impression of walk-up apartments in Yangon appears to be old rectangular box shape, homogeneous envelope and limited square feet dull interior small space. In other words, the buildings are full of constraints, lack of good user experiences, and they are not well-fitted in the modern days. Therefore, the resident suffers consequently many years, some may live in the apartment their entire lives. Thousands of people living in the walk-up apartment on a daily basis are being shaped by the space and its inadequate quality of living. Can it be called “Home” by the dwellers or is the place a temporary shelter? Online semi-structured interviews of 15 apartments’ residents and on-line questionnaire surveys of 70 apartment residents are conducted using descriptive analysis and observation to understand the particular patterns of perception of Sense of Home . This research aims to explore what makes “Home” “A sense of Home” for walk-up apartment users in Yangon, Myanmar by studying subjective responses shaped by the interior and experience of the spaces in apartment to understand the perception of the residents and improve the quality of living. The result reflects the priority level of important factors in relation to the sense of home framework. Research objective 01/Perception of sense of home in walk-up apartment 02/ Recommendations for creating better sense of home Research question 1/What are the attributes of a sense of home for walk-up apartment ? 2/What is the current perception of the sense of home in the existing walk-up apartment ? 3/What are the recommendations for creating a better sense of home in the walk-up apartment ?

75 | POETIC DIALOGUE CHAIR | 2022

Project brief The project, research and practice in visual communication, is to explore the actual and potential relationships between creative production-making images, objects, spaces, experiences, and so on- and research- the production of the knowledge by “Making”. I choose the interest concern on “poetic design/object/space” to understand the creation of “dialogues” in relations to poetic sensory . Concern statements I am intrigued by juxtaposing materials, forms, narrative, and nature in creation of poetic sensory experience and new dialogues in domestics spaces Investigation (Concern to questions) We eat, sleep, work, shower, cook, socialize, recharge, habitat and doing all sorts of activities in our domestic spaces, functionality and beauty of objects, spaces seems to be the decision factor to have them or not in the room. Often they are limited by the limited spaces, imagination, crave of usefulness, and easiness, production of the market, price, politic, or even skills of craftsmanship. 1. If an object or a space can contain dialogues, what kind of essential conversation we can have in this ever changing digital, virtual world ? 2. How far can we day-dreams, escape, or provide different perspective beyond our four walls through the objects, and spaces we embodied ? 3. How an object or space questions, reflect the way we live in now, the past, and give a glimpse of new way of living or thought ? 4. To breakthrough it and act as catalyst for change, how far can we go or evolve in relation to sensory poetic experiences, and dialogues in our domestic spaces ?

Process Before practice, I investigated relations to “poetics” through my personal photo library and online photo archive to understand from unconscious perspective of poetics. The relations to poetic can be contrast of emotions, connection of two different forms, stems of stories, imaginations, spaces, and different dimensions. But what exactly the poetic sensorial is ? How practice can lead me to understand poetic sensorial better ?

Project brief The planning communication and analysis of sustainable peri-urban settings and residential development in Klong Bang Prathun Community, Jomthong District, Bangkok, Thailand. Site location & Problem Bang Prathun Community in Chom Thong district is known for its Tangerines, poomijai garden, a lychee farm and canal life style. The local there has been associated with waterways. The place is also known for Wat Sai Floating Market and some Buddhist temple around there. It is one of the remaining area of green in the peri-urban settings as the area around the area are being occupied by the new development due to its location, city expansion and increasing population. The expansion now is starting to take over the agriculture for developing new estate, commerce places, and offices for urban city setting. 01/

EARLY ADOPTER 2035

EARLY ADOPTER 2050

Early adopter, this scenario assume that by adopting major innovation or strategies starting from 2021, in 2035 the impact can be keeping the existing green and building up the resiliency of the region. In2050, both residential estate and neighborhood can live a life sustainable with canal oriented design/planning.

07/

LATE ADOPTER 2035

LATE ADOPTER 2050

Late adopter, the assumption of late adopter is if we only start taking action by 2035, large amount of green or agriculture land will already be replaced by new development by then. Only small amount of green will left in the area. The outcome in 2050 will be less effective than early adopter.

08/

NON-ADOPTER 2050 Non-adopter, by adopting nothing toward the issue, 75% or 80% of the area will likely to become new city development rather than building toward garden in the city in 2050. Water infrastructure Agriculture Estate development
