President’s Message In this month of Thanksgiving, I’m reminded that most of us have much to be thankful for, especially our love and friendship, and interaction with horses. We’ve all been through a lot this past year, and it’s easy to remember all the disappointing things that happened, but Thanksgiving reminds us to focus on all the positive things that have occurred in our lives over the past year. We were able to continue shows and competitions after a few cancellations in the spring, we’re mostly able to continue our jobs, keep and ride our horses, and enjoy life, albeit in a slightly different way than in the past. Americans are exceedingly inventive, creative, and flexible when it comes to dealing with change and unusual situations, and horse lovers are no different – we’ve found ways to modify, update and change with the times in order to continue our relationship with horses. “And this, too, shall pass away.” as the famous saying goes. Eventually the pandemic will come to an end and we’ll all return to a more normal life. In the meantime, remember to focus on the positive and be thankful for all the good in our lives, especially horses. Happy Thanksgiving! Sincerely,
Holly Cornell President

Energy, Balance, and Bending. Oh My! By Paige Zimmerman
Once again, on October 24 and 25, Olivia Steidle Dressage at Travelda Farm was very fortunate to host a clinic with Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel. We hadn’t had a two-day clinic since early March before the pandemic began, so we all were very happy to have her back. I rode Ducati on Saturday and Buddy on Sunday, but I stayed for the entirety of both days to audit. It was really interesting to see how all the horses and riders had developed since the last clinic, and there also were some new pairs to watch. In both of my lessons, we worked on similar concepts since both Buddy and Ducati have similar weaknesses, only with different feels. When I rode Ducati on Saturday, the exercises we used were mainly designed to straighten him and encourage him to carry the energy forward without running on the forehand. With these exercises in mind, we also began setting him up for clean, powerful flying changes. We began with a leg yield exercise in the canter in which I rode off the track all around the arena, being sure to make clear corners and maintain the bend. On the long sides, Felicitas said to leg yield a few steps away from the wall and then catch him with the outside aids to ensure that he wasn’t just running to the side and falling out of balance. After working on this exercise, I really felt that Ducati was getting much more laterally supple, and he no longer felt like a ping-pong ball ricocheting back and forth. I had a much easier time manipulating where his feet hit the ground and I felt that I could make them more lightly hit the ground. Next, we worked on simple changes between counter-canter and true canter, continuing to work on the rectangle off the wall. Felicitas emphasized that the focus was not on “the number of simple changes you can do, but the quality of the transitions”. We worked on getting him to come forward into the canter-walk transitions instead of falling abruptly into them and rushing in the walk. The simple changes became super smooth, and rather quickly I felt an improvement in him listening to my aids. At that point, Felicitas instructed me to give the aids for the flying change, and we got a good clean one to the right. He did a little hop but I could 6

tell he really had the idea of doing it with power. We got a few clean ones to the left too, but I had a harder time keeping him straight in that direction, so they were not as deliberate. Now our homework will be to keep working on “stringing the energy through from his hind end towards his front end,” so that he doesn’t get stuck in the change and hop. I need to ensure that he doesn’t just run on the forehand, because if he’s running, he will anticipate, and the changes won’t be clean. We ended the lesson with some trot work. We worked on some half passes in the rising trot, and really focused on getting a bit of a deeper bend each way. He has a harder time maintaining the bend when travelling to the right, but going to the left he has a harder time moving over because he has to use that right hind leg. Also, I need to ensure that he does not run forward or sideways, so that his tempo stays slow and steady, but the energy and bounce is maintained. A slower tempo does not mean less energy! Felicitas also pointed out that even though I was keeping my leg down, I wasn’t give him enough of a “hug” with my legs. Instead of gripping or putting it on hard, I just needed to feel like I can wrap my leg around his barrel a bit more. My leg needed to be more “alive”. I know that sometimes I get too complacent and I am not quick enough in gymnasticizing each side of the horse: I end up correcting straightness issues after they happen instead of catching the horse before he falls out of balance. What I learned is that the emphasis should not be that my leg needs to be stronger but that it should be quicker and it should hug the horse so that I can feel the very moment that the horse stops bending or falls out of lateral balance. When I rode Buddy on Sunday, we worked on very similar exercises since he has the same weakness with his right hind leg. However, Buddy naturally takes more contact in your hand than Ducati does, so it is a bit easier to detect when he falls out of balance. However, it can be hard to get your timing right so that you fix the balance or straightness issue without getting in a

pulling match with him. We began by working in the walk and trot, mainly encouraging him to bend through his body and listen to my half-halts without stiffening. He was very excited when I first started, probably due to the nip in the air that morning, so there were moments where he’d get out of balance and run on the forehand. Felicitas had me use an exercise where we changed direction across the diagonal but kept the counter-flexion, which really helped me to gymnasticize him and keep him from falling one way or the other. And, as a result, as we warmed up, his tempo slowed down and he became more and more supple. In the canter, we again used a similar exercise to what we had worked on with Ducati, except we focused more on going into the corners and really using the bend and give in the ribcage/“armpit” to help Buddy become more collected and light on his feet. Whenever I lost the bend and he got heavy, I was to make a circle and regain the bend and balance that the previous corner had created. This exercise was helpful for me to understand how much the bend helps him to slow down, and that my reins are not the main factor in slowing him down. It is the bend and suppleness through his body! At one point, we had a really super corner where he slowed the tempo and gave in his armpit and hip without losing the energy. Felicitas said that “out of that corner you could’ve done a grand prix half pass because he was sitting down so much!” So, my homework will be to recreate what I did in that corner that got him so collected! As usual, I cannot thank Felicitas enough for making the trip up to our farm to teach us. Every single time I ride with her and audit her lessons, I learn something that propels me forward, so that I’m not just riding and able to do the movements, but I’m learning how to influence the horses to benefit their long-term health and welfare. And that’s what dressage is all about! Thank you also to Olivia and Brenda, without whom none of these amazing opportunities would be possible.

Western Dressage in 2020: In-Person Shows vs. Virtual Shows By Joann Sarni
“Dump me and you will become a case of dog food!” I muttered to the Palomino storm that was brewing under me as I entered at “A” to begin my test. The weather for the September Fun Show at the New Jersey Horse Park (NJHP) was clear and crisp, with wind occasionally blowing hard enough to create an eye-popping, nostrils blowing, head tossing, kick up your heels boogie that could unseat the best of us. When I was younger, I would just laugh and blow these antics off, but gone are the days of rubber bones that allowed you to bounce instead of going splat and breaking something when you hit the ground. “Mr. Blond Ambition” probably had those urges as we approached the giant scary “K” block when we changed rein across the diagonal. In-person shows. Oh how we missed them and showing in the elements that Mother Nature hands us on that particular day. We can all agree that 2020 has been a very unique year to say the least. Signing COVID waivers and getting your temperature checked while answering questions regarding your health status as you pull into the show grounds is the new norm. I decided that the Fun Show would be the first and probably only in-person show I would do this year. The staff at the HPNJ always put on a great well-organized show and it would be a shame to miss it, so I put in my entry in Western Dressage Test-ofChoice, as soon as the entries opened and repeatedly shared the show information on the NJ Western Dressage Facebook page to get riders to come out. Out of the 160+ members we have on our page, only 3 of us came to show in person. However, many others have decided to practice safe distancing and participate in the many virtual shows that are being offered this year. 2020 the Year of The Virtual Show In this new age of horse showing I decided last month to enter the WDAMI Battle of The Saddles Showdown (BOSS) virtual show, which is based in Michigan. The show is a Western Dressage Association of America (WDAA)-rated show that offers a wide variety of prizes for classes in Western Dressage, as well as United States Dressage Federation (USDF) classes (hence “battle of the saddles”). I filled out my on-line entry form and paid my entries via PayPal. The show secretary sent me an email with the entry confirmation along with a slate that had my name, my horse’s name, and the class number that I was entered in for my camera man (hubby) to hold up in front of

the camera for 5 to 10 seconds before I entered the ring. The rules include positioning the camera at “C” where the judge would sit, so that you can clearly see the ring letters and corners of the ring. You’re allowed to have caller, but you cannot edit out the background noise or edit the video in anyway. So, when Hubby’s cell phone went off during my ride, I couldn’t edit it out. Good thing it was a decent ring tone! Once your tests have been recorded, you have to upload them to YouTube, send the link to the show secretary, and wait for your ride to be judged and scores posted on a live scoreboard. Once your test has been judged and scored, you receive a very nicely typed PDF file of your test with the judge’s comments clearly written in the boxes. I found this pretty handy as I watched my test again with the judge’s comments. I feel this is a good way to prep for the WDAA Virtual World Show, which by the time you read this, has already happened this October. Competing in a World Show had been on my bucket list, and with the WDAA World Show going virtual, I am finally able to do this. I will be able to get dressed up in my bling outfits and ride my shiny pony in the comfort of my barn’s arena. I won’t have to worry about hauling hundreds of miles to get to the show venue, get my horse settled in, and live out of a hotel room for a few days. Not to mention the amount of money it would cost. However, I will miss the camaraderie of fellow riders, making new friends, the insane shopping venue (ie, like at the AQHA Congress, which was cancelled this year), and the adrenaline rush of entering the big ring. Given the current circumstances though, staying close to home is the better, safer option. Next month I’ll report on the results of the BOSS show and the experience of recording my tests for the World Show. News from Outside the Ring Blueberry Gets Bronzed How do we usually honor our heroes? We create a statue of them! Well, the great Valegro has joined those ranks with his very own statue that will stand in the center of Carl Hester’s home town. On hand for its unveiling was the honoree, himself, along with Carl, Charlotte, and his groom, Alan Davies. The statue was sculpted by local artist, Georgie Welch, who also attended. It was paid for in part through a public campaign where you could buy smaller replicas of the statues and raffle tickets, as well by as the volunteer Newent Initiative Trust, an independent organization that helps to make Newent (Carl Hester’s home town) “a better place to live, work and visit.” If you want one, check out: https://www.newentvalegrosculpture.co.uk/ - except everything seems to be out of stock.
Photo courtesy British Dressage Horse Racing Update Last month I wrote that the state of New Jersey was looking to cut out the entire $20 million purse subsidy for horse racing. Good news! They only cut 25% ($5 million). In this environment it’s the best anyone could hope for and demonstrates that the Governor and others recognize the importance of the racing industry (and thereby all horse sports) to our state. The remaining $15 million will be split evenly between Thoroughbred and Standardbred racing.

Being on a College Dressage Team Virtual Edition By Cameron Mohr
This semester, I made the decision to not go back to school in person but instead do all remote classes due to the pandemic. One of my biggest worries about going remote this semester was what I would do about the Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) team. I go to Centenary University and I am captain of the IDA team there. I was concerned about how I would be able to do my duties as Captain and participate in team activities. Not only that, but other people are also doing the remote learning thing, so I was worried about how we would even have a team or what we would do to keep members involved with no regular horse shows going on. After much brainstorming, IDA came up with many great ideas to keep members involved even during this weird time. One thing we have been doing to keep members engaged are webinars. We offer virtual seminars for all members to participate in that are educational, but also fun and informative. Offering these webinars helps members learn more about the equine industry by talking to and learning from professionals already in it. Not only that, but IDA also came up with the amazing idea for a virtual show. We have not been able to have a regular IDA show season this semester, which was upsetting for all the members, especially those like me who are seniors. But, with this virtual show idea now all members have the opportunity to show and do it on their favorite horse. We offer two divisions: one for those on school horses and one for those who have their own horses; this way students who are on campus riding school horses do not have an unfair advantage going against someone who is remote using their own horse they ride everyday. Students at Centenary get to pick their favorite school horse to do their test on, and will have it recorded and then submit it to be judged. The best part is that there will be a livestream where all the rides will be shown and all the scores and placings will be announced. With all the uncertainty and weird times going on right now, I feel so lucky to be apart of an organization that is making the best out of it for all its members. This semester definitely did not turn out how it was supposed to be, but with all the things IDA is offering, it makes things so much better.

The Amateur Dilemma By, Meredith Rogers
I went to a horse show!!! Actually, I went to 2 horse shows!!! Things have been going fairly well with the baby horse and my trainer suggested we go to Delaware Valley Horseman’s Association’s (DVHA) Sunday show, just because it was cheap and around the corner. The second show was also at DVHA 2 weeks later than the first, so before I knew how the first was going to go, I submitted my entry for the second one, figuring if it went poorly, it would give me an opportunity to try again. I needn’t have worried. Leo was great. It took a lot to get to this point, COVID-19 notwithstanding. The first step I did was change my long-term goals. I know that sounds drastic to get to a horse show. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs with Leo (baby horses are not for the faint of heart). I was all ready to sell him to a home more deserving. You see, Leo has uber talent that I couldn’t possibly tap into with my skill set. My goals have always been Grand Prix and that’s how my trainer and I approached his training. However, I couldn’t keep up and things were just not working. As I see it, when things are not working, something has to change. In the case of dressage, it either has to be the horse, meaning I get a schoolmaster (and Leo goes to someone with greater abilities); the rider, meaning I suddenly get more skills (unlikely), or the training program. In this case, we changed the program. Instead of my trainer riding him with the intent to move him up the levels, I started riding him to catch up to the level he was at (~2nd). And things just started to click! I have a totally new understanding of contact and how to ride canter departs, and keeping a horse under your seat, and straightness, and… all of those basics that are so important but also are so elusive. However, as I’m catching up to his training, his training has stalled. It should also be noted that his training is not as solidified as with a schoolmaster, so it takes more skills on my part (and patience on my trainer’s and Leo’s parts) to maintain what he knows, which to me just means I learn more. And, bonus, he and I have started to develop a real partnership, which I realized was my real goal all along. The joy has returned to my riding because I’m learning and building the bond I’ve always wanted. Maybe we will make GP one day and maybe not, but I’m having a blast and that’s really what matters. Having longterm goals is important, but they can’t detract from the here-and-now. There’s too much uncertainty in horses. They go lame or colic. We can lose our job or trip on the vacuum cord (don’t ask). I’ve always said that dressage is about the journey and not the destination. I’m loving the journey on my baby horse, and that has made all the difference.* *Homage to Robert Frost.

Horse Treats By, Meredith Rogers
It’s the season to give thanks, which often includes giving back. Horses have been helping people since they were first domesticated, but there is a special category of horses that serve as either psychological or physical (or both) therapists for humans in need. With some forms of equine therapy, the therapist teaches the patient to work with the horse in order to learn to apply those same skills to every-day life. Horses are good for this line of work because they pick up on the emotions of the people around them, which helps patients to learn that their behavior affects others. Therapeutic horseback riding has been shown to build motor, communication, and social skills. The horse’s pelvis moves similarly to a human’s, providing sensory input that helps improve neurologic function and sensory processing.
