President’s Message Welcome August! Despite the weather, the Summer Days Horse Shows were very successful thanks to great management, great volunteers, and great competitors. We are honored that Nancy Jaffer wrote an article for her On the Rail equestrian news service about our horse show and our efforts to encourage Para dressage. Here is a link to her article http://nancyjaffer.com/the-dressage-days-of-summer/. Meanwhile, the youth dressage team we sent to Lendon Gray’s Youth Dressage Festival did fantastic! The results and some pictures are in this issue of the newsletter. My big take away every time ESDCTA sends teams to different dressage and eventing competitions over the years, is how beneficial it is to the riders. Yes, team competitions prep them for future team FEI competitions by necessitating that they know the criteria needed to be selected, meeting the criteria, and then actually sending the team application in. It is good practice for their futures. It is also a good introduction to the “real” world, but that is such a small part of what the youth (and adults) get from the entire team experience. I see team members that even if they know each other, it’s usually only casually, but yet they come together over a period of two months as a real team. All of the team members and parents need to work together to decide on a team name and their stall decorations, and figure out all of the logistics. With all those people inputting their ideas (sometimes conflicting ideas), coming out with one clear vision that all on the team can agree with and have helped form is pretty remarkable. They also all (if they are not competing at the same time) go watch and support their fellow team members as they perform. The individuals help each other, learn to ask for help, and learn to realize that every team member does not have to be great at everything to build a strong team, they just need to be great at the thing they are great at and rely on everyone’s own individual’s strengths to help them all come out on top. ESDCTA is sponsoring an eventing team challenge at Buck’s County Horse Park on November 3. If you event or compete in combined tests, it is the perfect opportunity to experience being on a team and all of the benefits and joy it brings. Look for more info in the near future. Wishing you all well,

Insights into Para Dressage By, Alanna Flax-Clark
Para-Equestrian Dressage is the only equestrian discipline that is included in the Paralympic Games, where it has been a regular fixture since 1996. In 2006, the ParaEquestrian sport joined the ranks of the other 7 disciplines regulated by the FEI, with national and international competitions for dressage for individuals with disabilities. The FEI was one of the first international federations to govern and regulate a sport for both able-bodied and athletes with disabilities. Many might think the word “para” in Para Equestrian or Para Dressage may mean paralyzed. However, Para Equestrians are made up of people of all sorts of disabilities. “Para” literally means parallel and as riders we go through and must follow the same exact training, rules, and regulations as any other rider would. Para as it refers to the sport of dressage, means that we are able to show and compete alongside our peers no matter our physical disabilities. Para Dressage has a classification manual that is recognized at the national and international level. It has a series of profiles determined by numerous physical tests that are 6

used to place riders into what they call grades. To be classified as a Para-athlete you MUST have a permanent and measurable physical disability that is classifiable according to this manual. Once you are deemed eligible to be classified according to physicians and medical reviews, exams are done by physical therapists trained and accredited by the FEI. These exams are performed off the horse. Classification relates to an individual’s physical performance, not one’s skill. A rider is assigned a grade from 1-5 of similar functions, which allows them to compete at a parallel level. For example, a group of grade II riders may not have the same disability, but they fall into the same functional profile that allows them to compete against each other. Thereby, they are put on a level playing field in the ring. If you’ve had the chance to see me ride, you may have noticed I use special equipment such as looped reins or rubber bands to secure my feet into the stirrups. These are just some of my “compensatory aids”. Compensatory aids are merely items Para riders use to compensate for a physical limitation due to a disability. They are not used to give us an advantage over any other riders. Compensatory aids are determined and approved during the classification process based on one’s grade level. The FEI monitors these as a function of safety for the rider and horse. Remember, the compensatory aids provide no advantage to the rider. In fact, you may not even notice many of the aids used. They just allow us to ride at a parallel level despite the challenges we face from our body. It’s also important to remember that as Para-equestrians we are not limited to only showing in Para classes! We are merely classified at a grade to compete in Para competitions, but we are able to show amongst our able-bodied peers as well.

Para-Dressage Classification Grades (https://tryon2018.com/article/weg-explained-a-spectators-guide-to-para-dressage) Grade I: Athletes in Grade I have severe impairments affecting all limbs and trunk. These athletes usually require a wheelchair. When these athletes compete, their test is completed through the walk and they may not show a canter, piaffe or passage. Grade II: Athletes in this Grade have either a severe impairment of the trunk and minimal impairment of the upper limbs or moderate impairment of the trunk, upper and lower limbs. Most athletes in this grade also use a wheelchair in daily life. These athletes complete their tests through the walk and the trot and they may not show a canter, piaffe or passage. Grade III: These athletes have severe impairments in both lower limbs with minimal or no impairment of the trunk. Or they have moderate impairment of the upper and lower limbs and trunk. Athletes in this Grade may use a wheelchair in daily life. These athletes also compete at a walk and a trot and may not show a piaffe or passage. They can only show canter work that does not include lateral work, flying changes, half or full pirouettes. Grade IV: Athletes in Grade IV have severe impairment or deficiency of both upper limbs or a moderate impairment of all four limbs or short stature. These athletes are usually able to walk and generally do not require a wheelchair in daily life. Athletes with visual impairments such as very low visual acuity and/or no light perception also fall into this Grade. Athletes in this Grade compete at the walk, trot, with lateral work, and the canter. Grade V: The final Grade of Para-Dressage includes athletes who have very mild impairment of movement or muscle strength or a deficiency of one limb or a mild deficiency of two limbs. These athletes may also have visual impairments that are less severe than those competing in Grade IV and/or a visual field of less than 5 degrees radius. Athletes in this Grade compete at a walk, trot and canter with lateral work but they may not show a piaffe, passage, one or two times sequence changes, or full pirouettes.

The Sun Was Shining on Our Eventers By Holly Cornell
Both the June and July cross country schooling days at the Horse Park of New Jersey were great successes. We were fortunate to have had great weather for both, and the footing, as usual, was excellent. More than 40 riders came to each one – they tacked up, they rode, they jumped, they splashed through the water complexes, and generally had fun and enjoyed a great learning experience. This year we gathered a list of trainers who would be at the Horse Park and would accept other students to join them. So, if not having help is what stopped you from coming, fear not! We’ll offer it again. Come join us for the next schooling session on Sunday, August 18. Where else can you ride in such a marvelous setting where Olympians have tread?!?

Dreaming Big By Paige Zimmerman
When you start to think about competing in “the big arena,” at first glance, it is nothing short of overwhelming. But, there are resources available and all it really takes to decipher it all is time, concentration, and a willingness to ask questions, even if they seem silly. Early in my summer break, I started looking into the processes, procedures, and qualifying requirements for regional and national competition, and it has been quite a journey. I’ve looked into the USEF Festival of Champions, Young Horse Championships, USDF Regionals, US Dressage Finals, North American Youth Championships (NAYC), Dressage Seat Semi-Finals and Finals.... you name it. Overall, the biggest take-away has been that you need to just read everything pertaining to an event that you can get your hands on, and read the fine print! Each competition involves paperwork and deadlines. Sometimes, a web page, an omnibus, 12

and a prize list are not totally in sync or one or the other is incomplete, so you have to double check and cross-verify everything, especially dates. I have sent more than a few confused emails to show organizers and secretaries, all of whom have seemed very willing to help me learn. All have responded to my questions quickly, thoroughly and politely. I’ve discovered that there is some great customer service in our national organizations. I also have come to understand why there is so much paperwork involved with big events like these. With competitors coming from everywhere across the country (and sometimes the world, as with CDIs), the formality and documentation is to ensure that the event runs smoothly, safely (eg, health certificates), and in complete fairness to all competitors. If you dream of competing at this level, as I do, I suggest you understand the rules, regulations, and requirements of each event well ahead of time. You do not want to be scrambling at the last minute. By reading the member guides, websites, and prize lists, and sending emails to appropriate experts with your questions, you will gain a ton of knowledge and it won’t be so daunting. Even though I know I have a way to go before I can qualify to compete in most of these events, I want to be able to strategize and maybe even help others who are going to these competitions ahead of me. I feel that I am preparing myself for the future. It’s important to know what you’re doing out of the saddle as much as in it. I have come to appreciate all the hard work that goes into these big events, as well as the resources and institutional experts that are available, and I suggest everyone feel free to take advantage of them and learn all you can before your “big day”. Good luck!

Horse Treats By, Meredith Rogers
Here are some horse-related trivia that may prove useful the next time you find yourself on Jeopardy! The sequence of the horse's footfalls at the walk was correctly described by Aristotle (384-322 bc) in the 4th century bc. In the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Otomar BureĹĄ of Czechoslovakia fell off his horse during the cross-country phase and it took almost 3 hours to catch the beast, for which he received ~18,000 penalty points. A horse named Huaso, ridden by Captain Alberto Larraguibel, holds the record for the highest jump made by a horse. He jumped 8 feet, 1.25 inches on February 5, 1949, in Vina del Mar, Chile. The 1952 Helsinki Olympics was the first where people other than commissioned officers were allowed to compete in dressage events. The first woman to participate in an Olympic 3-day event was Lana DuPont (Wright) riding Mr. Wister as a representative of the US in the 1964 Tokyo Games. She finished 33rd and the US got a silver medal.

Learning to Overcome Fear Is a Journey By, Montana Coleman
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not the one who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” – Nelson Mandela Like most riders, when faced with the prospect of riding a new horse for the first time, I have a little bit of nerves. I seem to have a trend of trying a new horse for the first few times and declaring, “I'm never going to ride this horse again,” followed by riding the horse after a while and then absolutely loving it. Nevertheless, my fears increased significantly after having a scary incident on Duncan during one of the first times I sat on him. One day about a year ago, I was scheduled to actually have a lesson on Starlight, but as she was having a little problem with her eye, I was rescheduled to have my lesson on Duncan instead. Everything went fairly normal as I was tacking him up, but as we entered the ring, he started whinnying and calling for his field buddy. Even though we tried taking him into the indoor ring, he stilled persisted with his frantic calls and tense body language. This completely unexpected, scary behavior sent me into a panic, frozen state. So much so that I wasn't able to recover emotionally and had to end my lesson before things took a turn for the worse. Needless to say, this event ended up giving me perpetual nerves every time I was suppose to ride Duncan – something I still struggle with even to this day. Nevertheless, I didn't stop riding Duncan just because I got scared; I wanted to overcome my fears and am presently still working on it. While in the process of working on my nerves related to riding Duncan, I actually had another scary experience that only contributed more to my fears. In the fall of 2018, I decided to enlist in the Interscholastic Equestrian Association program, which entailed riders going to shows, getting on horses they have never been on before, and 16

riding in an equitation test. It sounded like fun and the practices, despite my being a little nervous, were fun, as well. As the show day arrived, my friends and I were understandably nervous as our show time drew closer and we learned of the horses we would be riding. Our trainer suggested we get there early to watch all the horses being brought into the ring and warmed up by their trainers. As we watched, we got to see the dispositions of the different horses and one in particular stood out to me. This horse went through two different trainers and seemed to be having a hard time adjusting to the ring. It finally became my turn for the draw. And yes, I got “that” horse. I couldn't refuse the pick until I at least tried to ride the horse, so I got on and proceeded into the ring. I made it around the whole ring once before the horse took off for the exit. Thankfully, there were handlers there to catch the horse and I got off safely, albeit quite shaken up. Within five minutes, I was given another, calmer horse to ride. Again, I nervously went out into the ring and we began the class. Everything was going great in the beginning, but after I finished my cantering, the horse dumped me. I wasn't hurt but then I was assigned yet another horse. Thankfully, this last horse was absolutely great, despite my very nervous and fearful energy; this sweet guy didn't pull any tricks on me and we got through all of the required movements. Although I thought this experience didn't affect me too much at first, I now think it has contributed a lot to my fears and nerves when getting on horses. I haven’t given up nor will I. I still ride Duncan a few times a week and we are quickly approaching show season. He is a lot like me in many ways; each of us has our little insecurities. He is a good horse; he puts up with my nervousness each week and never really does anything too radical. I have realized that riding is more than just a oneway street, it is a relationship. I help him and he helps me. I try to look at each ride now as a new opportunity to conquer this tentativeness I carry by writing a different ending to this constant mental story. I know one day Duncan and I will both be able to relax and enjoy our time together. Who knows, maybe around the corner awaits the next challenge that I will conquer.

The Amateur Dilemma By, Meredith Rogers
Meredith & PJ
Disappointment comes in many forms. It can be small. For example, I’m always disappointed by a bad ride or even just for a partially bad ride (why can’t I feel when I drop my inside shoulder?) Well, this month I experienced a bigger disappointment. I had a couple of really bad show experiences. My dream of a Second level All Breed award with PJ is over. Upon this realization I shut down, which is perfectly understandable. The usual doubts of “I suck at this riding thing,” came in full force. Then I thought about why the shows went so poorly, which only made me feel guilty. I realized we’re not quite ready to show at second, which means I set my horse up for failure and pushed him too hard.
But then I thought about next steps. There always has to be next steps even if they are in a different direction than originally planned. One next step will be to take the pressure off of us showing. PJ and I still have a lot to learn together; we’ll concentrate on training. Then there’s Leo. I’ve just started riding him again and not only am I catching up to what he already knows, but he’s taught me things that I have been able to apply to PJ. There’s also a great lesson horse in the barn. In one ride on her I had a breakthrough in understanding feel. I will take a path of learning. I will take lots of lessons on PJ, on Leo, on the lesson mare, on anything that comes my way; watch YouTube videos; and read articles. My goal will be to become a better rider, which doesn’t mean I can show PJ at Second or Leo at Training. It just means I will understand more theory and have more feel than I do today. Maybe I will show PJ at Second level next year if his leaser allows. Maybe I’ll show Leo. Maybe I won’t do either. If my sole goal is to improve, I shouldn’t be disappointment by mistakes, even in the show ring, because they are really just learning opportunities, right?

News from Outside the Ring Congratulations! Our very own Carey Williams, PhD, has been granted the prestigious Equine Nutrition Research Award from the American Feed Industry Association. Dr. Williams is Associate Extension Specialist and an Associate Professor at Rutgers in the Department of Animal Science. This award, which is given every other year, will allow Dr. Williams to continue her research in how nutrition affects the performance of the equine athlete, and how pasture content affects horse's metabolism of soluble carbohydrates. Dr. Williams has been an active member of the ESDCTA for many years, and competes in eventing and dressage. The next time you see her at an ESDCTA event, thank her for all she does for our equine partners. Disease Abounds In January 2019 a horse in Cape May County, NJ, tested positive for rabies and subsequently died of his disease. This 20-month old colt had been previously vaccinated, but tested positive after displaying neurologic symptoms. Other horses on the rural farm were given a booster and monitored, with no further cases found. In July of this year a coyote in Hunterdon County, NJ, tested positive for rabies. There were no reports of the animal attacking anyone; the coyote is deceased, so is no longer a threat to the community. A donkey in Bucks County, PA, tested positive for strangles at the end of June. He will remain in isolation until it is proven by negative nasal wash that he is cleared. Lastly, in July, the first reported case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in 2019 in NJ, was diagnosed in a 12-year-old mare in Ocean County. She had been vaccinated against EEE in April of this year and was euthanized on July 23, 2019.
