President’s Message Happy July! We are all very busy it seems, and it has been great getting to see people around at the horse shows and the clinics that are in abundance this time of year. Recently, I was asked about the new volunteer requirements. As in prior years, Eight (8) volunteer hours are required for each award applied for. New for this year is: for the first award applied for, 6 of the 8 volunteer hours need to be earned at ESDCTA organized shows and/or activities. All other volunteer hours needed for the first award and all other awards may be earned at any ESDCTA registered show or event or any ESDCTA organized show or event. There are many ways to earn those 6 or more volunteer hours and support the organization. The most easily identifiable way is to volunteer at one of the horse shows. We have 2

Summer Days I and II on Tuesday, July 23, and Wednesday, July 24 at the USET. We have a Cross Country Schooling on Saturday, July 13, at the Horse Park of New Jersey. We have our NJ Horse Trials on Sunday Sept. 29, as well as our Dressage Championships/Youth Team Competition on October 5 and 6 at the HPNJ. But what if you cannot volunteer the day of competitions/events or to help with setup for them prior to or takedown after???? What if you live 3 hours away from the venues??? We get that! But we still need your help. Can you volunteer to write a newsletter article? Can you e-mail/call other members to let them know what volunteers we need for a horse show or an event that is coming up? Can you help keep our website up to date? (Even if it is just by reading through each page to make sure it is current, and reporting back to the webmaster?) Can you help out/join a Board committee? (Or even join the Board as Eventing Member at Large? We are looking for a liaison from the Eventing community to be on the Board. Hint, hint) And there could be other ways you can help the organization out and earn your volunteer hours that does not include showing up at an event. I am only brainstorming here. It is not a complete list. Use your imagination and just reach out to me or anyone on the Board with your idea. In addition, there is the option to “buy out” your volunteer hours. We will have that set up to pay on line, and you can choose only the amount of hours you actually need. For example, you volunteered a half day at the NJ Horse Trials and have 4 hours. You could buy out only the additional hours you need. Please know that when we don’t have enough volunteers, particularly for shows, we often need to pay to have people on staff. Although your buy out helps us with this, we would much rather have the help of our membership. I’m not sure that I actually cleared up the original question, but if you still need clarification, please feel free to email me or any of the Board members, and we will do our best to help.

Riding is More Than Fun By Montana Coleman
If you were to ask me a year ago, “why do you ride?” I would have answered simply, “for fun”. Don’t get me wrong, today I would still answer, “for fun,” but I would quickly add that I also ride to de-stress from school (yes, by dealing with more stress, but that is another article), exercise, challenging myself in a different way, and prepping for show season. You see, riding has become much more to me than just something cool to do in my extra time. In fact, my time at the barn is essential treasured time. Which leads me to discuss how hard it can be to juggle my school life with my horse life. A year ago, I really didn’t have too much of a problem balancing my schoolwork with riding. Of course, there were several times when I would come home from a lesson and have to do some homework for class the next day, but everything worked out smoothly for the most part. Coleman Star, Montana and Duncan Even with practicing for the PSAT and a SAT subject test, I still did not have too much trouble with getting my work done and still having time to ride. What I didn’t know was that things were about to take a dramatic change when I started 11th grade. My brothers and I have always been homeschooled since we were kids and, being the last of the four, I was basically going to follow the same school regime as they did. To be fair, my mother did warn me that 11th grade was going to be the worst, but I really had no clue what I was getting into even as I watched my brothers stress with AP tests, SATs, and tedious courses. So, as school once again started, I was scheduled to take multiple AP tests, the SAT, and other hard classes throughout the school year. I managed to find a nice, but rigor6

ous routine that lasted me through most of the year and still allowed me to get to my riding lessons at night. Nevertheless, as the “big test” days approached, my workload suddenly increased significantly. Basically, I got up in the morning, worked most of the day, went riding, came home to some more homework, and went to sleep. Needless to say, the last month or two ended up being very stressful for me. Thankfully, I still managed to find time to ride, which provided a fun break from my school. This year I am moving up to First level and the change from Training level is big: the rider is expected to get the horse round, supple and moving forward while performing various moves such as legnthenings and leg yields. Often, I would go to the barn after a stressful day of school and then would have to work hard again during my lessons. I even had a Fix-It-Test clinic line up with the same day as my SAT subject tests! To some, my life may seem rigid and rigorous. But to me all the hard work I put forth in both areas has been worth it. The structure and perseverance I have in my school work has overlapped in my riding. And my riding is slowly but surely developing my confidence and my skills to be a better rider. Not to mention the friendships I’ve developed along the way with the other riders and with not one but two really special horses!!

Using My Grant to Its Full Extent: Another Great Clinic with Felicitas Von Neumann-Cosel By Paige Zimmerman
On June 15th and 16th, renowned trainer Felicitas Von Neumann-Cosel came to Travelda Farm in Quakertown, PA, for another wonderful clinic. I used the remainder of my April ESDCTA grant to participate in this clinic, and it was a real privilege. I was able to ride Olivia Steidle’s Buddy and Brenda Curnin’s Ducati on both days, which I never would have been able to do without the grant. I stayed to observe all of the lessons both days, as well, and it was amazing to see the transformations in the riders and horses. I certainly did a lot of learning along with a lot of riding! As always, Felicitas brought an abundance of knowledge and education to share with us, and she introduced us to several new exercises to help us on our journeys. Buddy and Ducati are very different horses, but riding both of them has been helping me learn more about influencing the horses’ overall quality of movement. In this clinic, Felicitas encouraged me to use similar exercises with both horses, because some of their challenges are very similar. Both of them struggle with maintaining a soft contact, for example. Buddy tends to hold the bit too strongly and Ducati tends to avoid it. They both also struggle to maintain mobility in the shoulders and bring the hind leg through to the front end. However, by the end of the lessons, I had a much better feeling of control, lightness, and ease that I definitely didn’t have at the beginning. With Buddy, Felicitas introduced us to an 10

exercise that helped me increase the suppleness of his shoulders. Starting in the walk, she told me to bring his shoulders in and then push them back out. I was essentially asking for a bit of shoulder-fore and then bringing the shoulders back in front of the hind legs. Felicitas then told me to ask for the canter when I pushed his shoulders straight again. Since he was giving in his inside shoulder and moving it to the outside rein at that moment, he couldn’t stick his head up (which is what he wants to do). In the trot, we worked on bringing his shoulders both in and out; asking him for alternating shoulderin and haunches-in on large circles. Rather than kicking with my leg or pushing hard to get lateral movement, Felicitas encouraged me to bring his shoulders out by moving my hands to the outside. This gave me some great moments where he felt super supple, which can be difficult for him to do and for me to accomplish! With Ducati, Felicitas introduced us to more mental exercises rather than physical exercises. In the halt, Ducati tends to stand with his hind legs out behind him. Since our goal was to start developing the canterwalk transitions, we began by schooling halt transitions and balanced halts so that he would become accustomed to using his hind legs for downward transitions. We then halted and Felicitas took the whip to tap him lightly on the hind leg. This was in an effort to get him to pick up his leg and move it forward under himself. Needless to say, he didn’t quite get it at first! He didn’t do anything until she turned the whip around and tapped him with the handle end of it. This simply showed us that he needs to learn how to step under with his hind legs and use them even when he is standing still. We were then introduced to the “tap to chew” exercise. In the halt, she told me to keep a steady contact and tap him lightly on the top of his croup until he chewed the bit. The goal of this exercise is to teach him that the whip is a helpful tool and that it means to relax and lift up his belly instead of getting tense. We did this exercise many times until we felt that he began to understand it. We then returned to walk-canter and canter-walk transitions, and I was able to get a more collected frame. Our canter-walk and canter-halt transitions became more prompt and uphill. It was amazing how much the mental work helped our physical work later on in the lesson.

This clinic was outstanding! It was truly a great weekend for learning and I am incredibly appreciative to ESDCTA for offering such a beneficial grant program. Felicitas provided me and the other riders with lots of exercises and feelings to work on so that we can develop even better relationships with our horses. I certainly have a lot of homework to keep me busy. To any rider, I strongly recommend going to clinics like these and applying for grants. And, as always, I want to thank my community of support at Travelda Farm, especially Olivia Steidle and Brenda Curnin, who are so generous with their time, wisdom, and wonderful horses!

Horse Treats By, Meredith Rogers
Today if you want to get your horse from point A to point B, there are a variety of options ranging from your basic two-horse trailer to first-class accommodations on a jet liner. You may think that back in the day, horses transported us and not the other way around, but you may be surprised to learn that equine transport has been around since ancient times. A seal impression of a stylized horse in a boat has been dated to 1500 BC, and in the 5th century BC, ships transporting horses as part of the Persian expedition against Greece were written about by Herodotus and Thucydides. A section of the tapestry depicting William the conqueror’s invasion of England in 1066 shows the transport across the English Channel of 3,000 horses by 750 vessels. These horses were critical in the victory of the Normans over the English at the Battle of Hastings. Spanish Conquistadors in the 16th century also used ships to transport horses. To get their horses to the New World, they not only suspended their horses in slings, crosstied them, and hobbled them, but kept them below deck in badly ventilated conditions. Many horses perished during the trip. While overseas transportation of horses was well documented, little is known about land transport before the 18th century. Perhaps the first modern-like “horse van” was the large horse-drawn conveyance reported to have carried to the Ascot Racecourse a racehorse owned by Queen Anne (1665-1714). Soon, equine transport became popular for racehorses. Once railways became ubiquitous, they became a popular way to transport horses long distances in relatively short periods of time. However, many thought the stress of transport by this method was too much for high-strung thoroughbreds to handle. The introduction of the automobile changed everything. In 1912, mass production of horse boxes fitted to internal combustion automobile chasses began in England – the Vincent Horse Box. The British Army in 1914 used these horse boxes to transport

horses to war. Today, there are a myriad of choices in horse trailers and vans, and numerous advances have been made to make sure our equine friends are as comfortable and safe as can be, and some even offer amazing options (living quarters with flat screen TVs for example) to keep us humans happy.

The Amateur Dilemma By, Meredith Rogers
“Discretion is the better part of valor” – William Shakespeare (1597) I live by this quote, especially when it comes to riding. That does not mean I don’t take any chances; what it means is that I take calculated risks. I just started riding my baby horse again after a morethan-6-months hiatus due to some behavior issues. Things have been going great but that’s because I only get on after my trainer tells me he’s being a good boy, and when I do get on, I’m conservative in how I ride him. For example, the first few rides on him, I didn’t canter so that I could get a feel for him. Now that I know him better, I’m galloping down the long side. It’s all about pushing the boundaries a bit at a time, and not leaping off the cliff. While it is important to always be expanding our comfort zone, the key is to not overly challenge ourselves so that we self-destruct. There is no getting around the fact that leaving our comfort zone will make us uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t make us fearful, which means we’ve pushed too far, too fast. Nevertheless, don’t get stuck in your comfort zone because you’re afraid to make a mistake. “It is in these miscommunications where the learning happens” – Laura Graves (2019). The goal is to stretch our comfort zone so that it eventually encompasses what used to make us nervous. Recognize that how you expand your comfort zone will be different from how your friend does it. For me as a naturally timid rider, I want to maintain the confidence that I’ve developed from years of being safe (thanks to PJ), so I take baby steps. Find what works for you, and remember that there’s always another day and another way to do something. It really is true, “The only man who never makes a mistake is the man who never does anything” – Theodore Roosevelt (1900). But also, “He that fights and runs away, will live to fight another day” – Demosthenes (338 BCE).

News from Outside the Ring Your Horse Can Eat Weeds But Not Weed The US Equestrian Federation (USEF) Equine Drugs and Medications Program has ruled that cannabinoids (CBD) and their metabolites are prohibited substances in competition horses. They state that CBD in both their natural and synthetic forms are likely to affect performance due to their anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) activities. Horses who test positive will be considered in violation of GR4 beginning Sept. 1, 2019. New York Is Looking to Take Care of Their Own A bill in the NY state senate (S6221) has just been introduced that would require race horse owners and trainers to complete an online training course on their responsibilities with respect to the horses in their care after their racing careers are over. There are no mandates regarding what they can or cannot do; it’s just education. However, three previous attempts to pass similar legislation have failed. If you live in NY and want to comment on the bill, please go to: https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2019/s6221 to see the full text of the bills and leave your feedback. New York has also introduced bills in both the state senate (S5983) and assembly (A7871) to prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption. There are no slaughterhouses in the US that currently process horses; however, horses are still shipped to Canada and Mexico. Therefore, it’s not clear what these bills will actually do.
