If you’re reading this, you are probably a member of ESDCTA, but I’m sure you know of someone who rides dressage or events who is not a member. You know all about the wonderful things offered like educational programs, clinics with big name trainers, horse shows, year-end awards, and not least, that sense of being part of a community of likeminded people. The more members ESDCTA has, the better the programs we can offer. Our membership numbers are also important considerations when state and local governments decide on legislature that affects us (like open space), and we advocate for our sports (we’re working on better footing at the HPNJ). Please reach out to your equestrian buddies and tell them about all of the benefits of membership and have them sign up. The more the merrier!
Please Contact Linda Marciante if you know any ESDCTA members who have achieved any Milestones. Success at a show, regional/national/international award, new horse, or anything else you want to celebrate.

The Amateur Dilemma By, Meredith Rogers
I don’t know if it’s a female thing, a generational thing, or what, but I know that society has never encouraged me to express pride in my accomplishments. This is actually a well-documented problem for women in business and it carries over into every-day life. Although there is something to be said for humility, standing up for success should not be something we’re afraid to do for fear of being labeled something undesirable. So here it goes…I took Leo to a horse show! It was a schooling show but we did second level (tests 2 and 3). We scored pretty decently despite his fear of the world. He didn’t spook once, just was tense. I’m so proud of him, and something else…I’m proud of myself. Just a short nine months ago we were barely doing training level. Since then, I fixed a lot of my position flaws, figured out contact, lost my fear of his spooking, and learned how to ride the movements. He didn’t have as much to overcome. Most importantly, we learned to trust each other. During this time, our bond has grown into a true partnership. It’s the best feeling in the world. Here’s the humility part…I did not do this alone. I had a lot of help and support. It took a lot of very hard work, and we’re hardly good – just way (way) better than we were. Dressage (all riding, really) is all about baby steps and the journey is never a straight shot. The next time you’re feeling good about anything you’ve accomplished, even if it’s as small as getting a square halt, which, by the way involves a lot more than just stopping, allow yourself to celebrate.

Hoof Foot Falls are Now Music to My Ears By Paige Zimmerman
Recently I had my first foray into the world of creating musical freestyles! A few weeks ago I realized that since I have my USDF Bronze Medal, I am eligible to pursue my USDF Bronze Freestyle Bar, and so I plan on gathering some scores towards that award this year. I found that I really enjoyed the freestyle-making process from start to finish, and I definitely plan on making many more in the future. I’ve dreamt about riding freestyles for a very long time. In the Notes app on my phone, I keep an organized list of YouTube links to music I feel would make a great freestyle. For anyone who is thinking about doing a freestyle in the future, I highly suggest keeping a list and writing all of your ideas down. It helped immensely when I finally started to make the freestyle. I had all the music to choose from. For my freestyle with Ducati, I decided to use Earth, Wind & Fire because I felt it suited his swingy movement and the songs are lively and upbeat. I chose separate songs for my entry, trot work, walk work, canter work, and last centerline (which was in trot). For the USDF Bronze Freestyle Bar, you need 2 scores at a 1st level freestyle, 2 scores at a 2nd level freestyle, and 2 scores at a 3rd level freestyle (all over 65%). I decided to start out with 1st level, since this was my first time making one. I only had two weeks COLLECTIVE REMARKS

to make it, since I had signed up to show it on May 6 at the Bucks County Horse Park. It was a bit of a tight timeline to say the least. The first step was to put together the choreography and draw it out on paper, making sure that I hit all the required elements while simultaneously showcasing Ducati’s best movements. Then, we went to the BCHP to school and I rode all the choreography and got a video of it without the music. After that, I was ready to begin the editing process. I intended to use a free program, so I started the editing process with GarageBand, a program that comes with all Apple devices. However, I soon discovered that there was no way to change the tempo of individual tracks, meaning that I couldn’t speed up my trot music independently from the rest of the project-- everything sped up instead of only the selected portion of music. I quickly abandoned Garageband to use Audacity, which is another free program. It is much more efficient and effective in my opinion, though it is a little more difficult to learn. However, I recalled when I went to the USDF Annual Convention in Georgia a few years ago, during a freestyle seminar, the professional who gave the lecture said that she used Audacity for her editing, so I decided to give it my best shot. A couple of takeaways from editing my music are that (1) it is important to not edit the music too much once you have it in the program so that the music doesn’t lose quality, and (2) make sure that you listen to the songs after making each change to make sure it’s exactly the way you want it, so that you can go back and make changes before getting too far along in the process. Once I got used to using the program, the editing process went smoothly, even though it can be a bit tedious as you go through and listen to the pieces over and over again. That is just another reason that you should actually enjoy the music you’re editing: you have to listen to it on repeat! After finishing the editing process, I schooled my test to the music, but I didn’t have a regulation arena available, so I just had to work from the sound of the music. It actually lined up pretty well, so I made a few changes and my dad burned a CD for me. After that, we were off to the show! I had never run through the final music and test in its entirety, but sometimes you just have to give it your best shot and work with what you have. 8

In retrospect, I wish that I had practiced to the music playing over loudspeakers because Ducati was a bit startled by it and became a little tense and tight. He relaxed by the end of the ride, and we ended on a great score of 76%, including an 8.5 for the free walk! If I had given myself more time to practice with the music, I’m sure that we would’ve had more confidence and flow in the arena. But it was not bad for our first try at a freestyle! For anyone aiming for awards or just wanting to have fun riding to music, I highly recommend being involved in the process and making your own-- it’s incredibly rewarding to see your dreams and vision come to life! Riding to music is totally different than riding a test, and now that I’ve experienced it, I think it’s a lot more fun and gratifying! I’m excited to do it again.
Horse Treats By, Meredith Rogers
I definitely prefer the one “horsepower” of my equine partner to the 225 in my car, but I find it a very strange term when I look at the size of my car compared to my horse (the horse is bigger). The term dates back to when horses still ruled the world. In 1702, Thomas Savery, an English inventor, wrote in The Miner’s Friend: “So that an engine which will raise as much water as two horses, working together at one time in such a work, can do…” James Watt (1736-1819), a Scottish engineer took the concept further to help market his improved steam engine. He discovered that a pony could lift a 100-pound weight at the rate of 220 feet per minute over a four-hour shift, which equals 22,000 foot-pounds per minute (a foot-pound [ft-lb] is the work used to move one pound by one foot). He increased this figure by a half (+11,000 ft-lb) because he thought a horse was 50% more powerful than a pony, and called it one horsepower (33,000 ft-lb per minute = 550 ft-lb per second). He confirmed this by testing a “brewery horse,” which he found was able to produce 32,400 ft-lb per minute, and rounded up. Thereby, the definition of one horsepower became the power needed to lift 550 lb by 1 foot in 1 second.

News from Outside the Ring Olympics Here We Come Although whether the Olympics will actually happen is still not a done-deal, the United States is continuing on like they were. The US Eventing Team has been announced, and will be led by Erik Duvander as Chef d’Equipe and Jenni Autry as Team Leader. The team is comprised on Phillip Dutton (West Grove, PA) and Z, Elisabeth Halliday-Sharp (Lexington, KY) and Deniro Z, Boyd Martin (Cochranville, PA), and Luke 140, and Doug Payne (Aiken, SC [who started out a local boy]) and Vandiver. The alternates are (in order) Tamra Smith (Murietta, CA) and Mai Baum, Will Faudree (Southern Pines, NC) and Mama’s Magic Way, Will Coleman (Gordonsville, VA) and Off The Road, Sydney Elliott (Bossier City, LA) and QC Diamantaire, Bruce Davidson Jr (Unionville, PA) and Carlevo, and Lauren Nicholson (The Plains, VA) and Vermiculus. Good luck to all! You Are What You Eat Canada’s show jumping team will not be headed over to Tokyo for the Olympics because team member, Nicole Walker was disqualified after testing positive for a cocaine metabolite (benzoylecgonine) during the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Her scores were dropped, putting the Canadian team into seventh place in the team event, which was out of the running. It turns out that Walker imbibed some South American tea during breakfast at the hotel during the event. The tea contained coca, which may be illegal in Canada, but is still consumed in several South American countries as an altitude sickness remedy. Back in January, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Lausanne, Switzerland) denied her appeal. In May, they agreed that the cocaine metabolite was inadvertently ingested, but they did not reinstate the Canadian team for the Olympics. Canada will be able to send an individual horse and rider to the games.

ESDCTA Workshop Series: Getting the Most from Your Riding: Relaxation and Focus for Equestrians June 1st and 15th 2021. ESDCTA Invites You to Two Virtual Workshops on Relaxation and Focus to Enable You to Become a Better Rider and Competitor. FREE to Members! Presenter: Lori Washton, Ph.D, Clinical Psychology and FEI-level Competitor Overall goal is to enable participants to learn how to focus on what they want to achieve and ride their best, whether on a day-to-day basis, in lessons or competitions. The objective is for the rider to gain more awareness of the body and mind in order to maximize the effectiveness of your aids for riding. Each workshop is 45-60 minutes long and there is a week between sessions to allow for practice. Sessions are FREE to ESDCTA members and $20 to nonmembers. They will be conducted via Zoom. All you need is Zoom loaded on your computer, tablet or phone and a quiet place to participate.
Session 1: Body Awareness and Riding Tuesday, June 1st - 7 p.m. Employ exercises that focus on different areas of your body so that you can identify tension and create relaxation. Since we use our body to signal the horse the more effective the control of tension in the body, the more effective the aids to the horse. Learn how to focus your mind using a calming image. Once you are able to calm your mind then we can apply the relaxation to riding imagery. We integrate the body and mind work and go mentally into the saddle and apply it to riding.
