HPNJ Check Presentation On May 27, during the lunch break at the HPNJ, Kem Barbosa (Judge and ESDCTA/ NJHP supporter), Victoria Shilton (Education Chair), Ruth McCormick (Secretary), Lisa Toaldo (Dressage Chair) and Heidi Lemack (President), presented a check for $2000 from the proceeds of the Lilo Fore Symposium to the Horse Park of NJ’s President, Allyson Jeffery, and Financial Liason and Trustee, Diane Sigafoos. This check was not just a simple monetary transaction. It is the end result of volunteerism. Kem Barbosa and Willette Brown came with an idea to ESDCTA’s Board, to bring an incredible educational opportunity to our members that could also serve as a fund raiser to support the Horse Park of New Jersey. They then made it happen with the support of ESDCTA’s Board and volunteers. Although called the “Horse Park of New Jersey,” the Horse Park receives no money or help from the state to maintain the property or the facilities. Through increased sponsorships and the tireless dedication of the Horse Park’s Board, led by President Allyson Jeffries, the Horse Park has made tremendous strides in upgrading and renewing the facilities, the rings, and the footing. This past year, all of the rings, including the warm up ring have been leveled to current best standards, and continuing education has been provided for staff of arena maintenance and grooming techniques. Most everything that could be power washed and painted has been. The Winner’s Circle was well used during the horse show, and there is a noticeable improvement in the quality and types of equipment being used throughout the park. The park looks 6

incredible. With more donations such as ours, the footing will continue to be upgraded and remain well maintained. We all benefit when our local, volunteer-run organizations work together! I would like to end this article with Allyson Jeffery’s words during the presentation: “We still have much more work to do. We need to upgrade equipment, maintain 10 buildings (The Lamb house included). We need to continue to improve the office and financial stability, maintenance of the Stabling area and annual maintenance on the arenas. We are additionally stewards of 200 acres, With a cross country course that rivals the now 5 star Fairhill. We have one and a half full-time staff members, (clearly over staffed.) Without our volunteers and donations none of this Park Improvement would be possible, as you can see, it takes a village...Better yet an equine community that is not divided by discipline, but rather unified by our love of horses and the continuing education of responsible, respectful horsemanship. It is programs like the Lilo Fore clinic that further us in this endeavor. We are so grateful to Kem, Willette, and ESDCTA for organizing this caliber and quality of event hosted at the Horse Park of New Jersey. We have made our best efforts to present a facility that can continue to hold events that are truly impactful to the Equine community and future development of our sport. Thank you Kem, Heidi, and ESDCTA members.”

My Dressage4Kids TEAM Program Experience By Paige Zimmerman

In April, I received an education grant from ESDCTA and I used part of it to pay for a clinic with Lendon Gray that was held May 11-12, at the beautiful Rhythm & Blues Equestrian Center in Quakertown PA. This clinic was part of the Dressage4Kids TEAM Program, and this was my third such clinic. First, I must thank The Emerson Family and Ms. Monika Dujardin for hosting this clinic at their immaculate and perfectly appointed facility. They opened their property and rolled out the red carpet for 11 additional riders and horses, plus auditors, parents, and trainers (literally, there was carpet placed in the indoor arena for a seated auditing area and in the hay stall where we were able to safely store our tack and supplies). I imagine this is no small feat when you’ve already got a thriving and busy equestrian business to run! Ms. Dujardin also prepared amazing hot lunches for our entire group and hosted us in her private residence. It’s incredibly generous for a property and business owner to host a 2-day event as hectic and complex as a youth riding clinic, and I feel that R&B went above and beyond the call of duty. I brought Ducati, owned by Brenda Curnin, to this clinic. We arrived on Friday, May 10, in the mid-afternoon so we would have time to settle in and have a brief lesson with our regular trainer, Olivia Steidle. I always find it helpful to arrive as early as possible to an 10

event like this so that I can get comfortable with how the venue is organized and run. I want to make sure that my horse partner has time to acclimate before an event. Depending on the distance between my home barn and the host facility, I usually have to take a half or full day off from school, which requires a bit of planning and organization. I’m a high school junior and I have to be sure my absences for extra-curricular athletics are pre-approved by my teachers and school administration, and I have to be sure to complete all my assignments on time regardless of my absence. The TEAM clinics typically start at 7am Saturday and Sunday and go all day both days. Each rider gets a 45-minute private lesson with Lendon (or another clinician in some cases). All riders also are required to audit as many of the other lessons as possible over the two days and attend both morning lectures or activities, both lunch lectures or activities, and the Saturday evening lecture or activity (which typically includes a sponsored dinner of some type – this one was pizza). In addition, throughout the weekend, we are asked to read handouts, complete quizzes, and write goals for ourselves and our horses. I feel that we riders must always make consideration of the host property one of our top priorities when attending events such as this, and usually, we must clean our horse’s stall and do all feedings ourselves. However, R&B cleaned stalls and fed for us during this particular clinic. Nevertheless, I still chose to arrive at the farm at approximately 6am both days to help if I was needed and to make sure Ducati was okay mentally and physically. So, what did I learn? Here is some feedback that was fairly consistent for all or most of the riders, including me: • One of the most important building blocks of dressage is a forward moving horse that responds to your leg and seat quickly. To achieve more upper-level movements such as half-pass, forward power from the hind end is a must. This does not mean that the horse is running. It means that the horse has upward thrust from behind (which creates a strong topline). •

Similarly, bend is another critical aspect that Lendon focused on. In my case,

Ducati has difficulty bending left. I must have heard “more bend” a thousand times in my lessons, and for good reason! A bendable horse allows for the upper-level movements to be developed. If the horse is locked in the ribcage, beautiful movements cannot be developed because the energy is blocked from coming forward. When the horse is twisted, stiff, or tight, it’s similar to a kink in a hose. Nothing flows through. • Within each ride, hundreds of mini-transitions are made. A transition could be a collecting or balancing half-halt or it could be an aid that changes the gait entirely. Shortening and lengthening the gaits was an exercise that Lendon repeated multiple times with the riders because it really helps to gymnasticize the horse and create a better, more through picture. You ride each stride as it comes, sometimes asking for more bend, sometimes fixing a problem, sometimes asking for a split second of collection, and so on. It’s a juggling of the aids, and Lendon kept us on our toes with lots of transitions! • The importance of lateral work was stressed throughout the clinic. We all were pushed to perfect whatever lateral movements we were working on, whether that be by asking for more sideways reach, asking for less or more bend, asking the forehand or hind end to move over more, asking the horse to stay on a line or circle within the movement, etc. Working towards perfect lateral movements throughout all of our lessons also helped us to improve impulsion, collection, and thoroughness. I will certainly come back to these themes over and over again the future. Thank you again to ESDCTA for supplying me with this grant. The remaining funds will allow me to ride in an upcoming Felicitas Von Neumann-Cosel clinic and I’m really excited about that! Thank you to Olivia Steidle for teaching me so well that I can ride in these extremely demanding and challenging clinics. And, finally, a huge thank you to Brenda Curnin for supporting me. Riding Ducati is a dream. I am having a fantastic time learning from him, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

Horse Treats By, Meredith Rogers

Those of us who ride consider ourselves lucky. But there are a number of superstitions related to our equine friends that suggest bad luck may not be far away. Below are some horse-related superstitions – some that promise successes and riches and others not so much. We all know that horseshoes are good luck but the luckiest of all shoes is one off the hind leg of a grey mare. A cowboy hat on your bed is very bad luck and to right that wrong you need to throw the hat outside and stomp the bad luck out of it. There’s a story about a cowboy’s mother who accidentally placed her son’s hat on his bed during the National Finals Rodeo (NFR); the next day he showed up to the event with a squished hat. Don’t worry if you break a mirror or spill salt. Just lead a horse through the house and any misfortune can be averted. To avoid bad luck if you see a white dog you should stay silent until you see a white horse. A horse neighing at the door of a house forebodes sickness for the inhabitants. If you walk under a ladder and want to avoid the bad luck, just keep your fingers crossed until you have seen three horses. Want to be protected from witches? Wear a black stallion’s tail hair on your wrist and no witch will bother you. Have a piano that’s out of tune? Put a horse skull under the floor and the piano’s tone will improve.

The Amateur Dilemma By, Meredith Rogers

Sometimes I feel so overwhelmed by all that I still have yet to learn with regard to riding. It shouldn’t come as any surprise; I am only at Second level; there’s still third, fourth, and the FEI levels to go before the highest level of our sport, Grand Prix. That fact, in and of itself, shows that there’s a lot more to learn. But what I’m really referring to are the seemingly small but important little nuances – if only I knew 5 years ago that a little outside leg does wonders… And, even though I’m showing Second, I’m still figuring out things I should have known at Training level. Sometimes learning is linear – you learn step 1 before step 2 before step 3. However, more often than not, you learn step 1 then step 3, then step 4, and only then do you to understand what you missed in step 2. Riding is all feel and timing, which is much harder than memorizing facts. As Malcolm Gladwell said, it takes 10,000 hours to become a master at something. How are we amateurs going to fit that into our busy lives!?! That’s about 27 years if we ride 1 hour per day every day. Daunting! That’s why we shouldn’t beat ourselves up if we don’t ride as well as our trainers, or even that kid who started riding when she was 2. It’s okay that we’ve been doing Training Level for 10 years because learning the basics is the hardest part, and if every year we see a bit improvement, then we’ve achieved success. So, celebrate every glimmer of understanding for the victory it is and keep going because Malcolm also said that to be “merely good” takes only 8,000 hours.

Animal Abuse Stops With You At some point you have probably seen someone treat an animal in a manner you knew was just wrong, and if you haven’t yet, you probably will. Maybe it was obvious, such as someone kicking their dog, but maybe it was more subtle, such as thinking the horse down the street is just a bit too skinny and unkempt. Well, our local and state governments have made it easy to help. Check out the NJ State Department of Health Veterinary Public Health Website for a host of resources: https://www.nj.gov/health/vph/index.shtml The NJ Department of Agriculture has an easy form you can fill out to report suspected abuse or neglect. Go to

https://www.nj.gov/agriculture/divisions/ah/news/complaintformonline_Feb2017.pdf

and fill in the information.

Your county/township website may also have their own form to fill out. Here is a link to your NJ local government websites: https://www.nj.gov/nj/gov/county/localgov.html In Pennsylvania, you can fill out a form on the Pennsylvania SPCA site: https://www.pspca.org/cruelty And, you can always call the police if an animal is in immediate danger. There are people specifically trained to help.

News from Outside the Ring Double Check Your Feed Cargill’s animal nutrition business is voluntarily recalling select Southern States Triple 10 (CN) feed, as well as other poultry and livestock feeds, due to aflatoxin levels that exceed the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) levels deemed safe. Aflatoxins are chemicals produced by certain molds that can cause both acute and chronic problems. Acute aflatoxicosis is associated with generalized hemorrhage, bloody diarrhea, and death in 1-3 days. More chronic effects include weight loss, liver damage, anemia, jaundice, and death. It should be noted that no adverse health effects to horses or other animals have been reported to date. If you have any of this feed, you should return it to your local retailer who will give you a replacement or refund. You can call Cargill at 800-822-1012 (Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time) for more information. A complete list of the affected foods are as follows. Please note, new feeds have since been added to this list. Please contact Cargill for the latest information.
