President’s Message As we wind the year down and get ready for the holiday season, we have a lot to celebrate. Year End award applications are due (postmarked by November 5), and the Annual Turkey Trot at the Horse Park of NJ is taking place on November 17. You can find detailed information about the Turkey Trot Here. The weather smiled on us for both the Dressage Championships and the NJ Horse Trials. You can see some of the great photos from the competitions in this edition of the newsletter. A huge thank you to Lisa Toaldo, Dressage Chair and Shannon Bossung, Secretary for the October 5 and 6 show, and to Gary Maholic, Horse Trials manager, and Diane Engler, NJ Horse Trials Secretary. They made running these large competitions seem easy. Looking forward to even more interesting, educational, and fun competitive and educational events in 2020! If you can offer any help to the Board or any committees in 2020 please contact me at president@esdcta.org or Susan Lax at nominating@esdcta.org. You may also contact me with any ideas you think would help improve the organization. Remember, ESDCTA is your club, and we on the Board want to make sure we’re meeting your needs. Wishing you all a great November!

Milestone

If you’re reading this, you are probably a member of ESDCTA, but I’m sure you know of someone who rides dressage or events who is not a member. You know all about the wonderful things offered like educational programs, clinics with big name trainers, horse shows, year-end awards, and not least, that sense of being part of a community of likeminded people. The more members ESDCTA has, the better the programs we can offer. Our membership numbers are also important considerations when state and local governments decide on legislature that affects us (like open space), and we advocate for our sports (we’re working on better footing at the HPNJ). Please reach out to your equestrian buddies and tell them about all of the benefits of membership and have them sign up. The more the merrier!

Please Contact Linda Marciante if you know any ESDCTA members who have achieved any Milestones. Success at a show, regional/national/international award, new horse, or anything else you want to celebrate.

Horse Treats By, Meredith Rogers

Now that everyone is back in school, it’s time for a little quiz. Which of the following is the closest living relative to the horse? A. Camel B. Rhinoceros C. Deer D. Rat

=?

All of the animals on this list are mammals. The rat is of the order Rodentia, which is characterized by having two continuously growing incisors in the upper and lower jaws, and is nothing similar to the horse. Camels, rhinoceroses, deer, and horses are all ungulates, which are animals that use the tips of their toes (usually hoofed) to sustain their whole body weight while moving. However, camels and deer are members of the order Artiodactyla, meaning they have an even number of toes. Horses are members of the order Perissodacyla, which are odd-toed ungulates. Only the rhinoceros is also a member of the order Perissodacyla, so the answer is B.

A Special Celebration: ESDCTA Turns 50! By, Heidi Lemack

On Saturday night during the ESDCTA Dressage Championships, Youth team competition, and schooling show, we started the celebration of ESDCTA’s 50th anniversary. Our Marketing Chair extraordinaire, Erin Gale, provided wonderful coffee mugs with our 50th anniversary logo on them, had cookies made by the Day Break Farm Muffin Company for the horses, and also had a supply of huge carrots for them. These treats were perfect to kick off the celebration that followed our evening of freestyles. A little history to put this special day into perspective. Our USDF GMO was formed four years before the USDF was created. Our group was part of the formation of the USDF. Lazelle Knocke, Jack Fritz, and Edgar Hotz were all instrumental in starting the Eastern States Dressage Association (we added Combined Training later). Lazelle Knocke, besides being our first President, was President of the USDF from 1989-1993. ESDCTA still annually hosts the Edgar Hotz Roundtable, giving judge’s time to meet and learn from each other with the wisdom and direction from some of our local “S” judges. For many years, Marilyn Payne has been the leader of the group and is currently joined by Kem Barbosa, Lisa Schmidt, Cindy Canace, and others. They all donate their time to further the education of our region’s L grads and USEF judges. In celebration, we invited our past Presidents to the party. Without their voluntary leadership during their three-year terms, we would not be where we are today. As current departing President, I was touched by how many were able to attend, and how the others regretted not being able to make it that evening. ESDCTA still holds a special place in their hearts. I met many for the first time, but others I have known for years, and some of those I did not know they served as President. In attendance were Lisa Toaldo, Fran Crocco, Gary Maholic, Mary Gadek, past VP Cindy Glaser, and myself. Also in attendance were long time volunteers, past or present Board members: Jean Goeltz, Tammy Purdy, Elaine Landy, Betty Aducci, and Ann Schneider. I am thankful COLLECTIVE REMARKS

to my fellow professionals that also showed up to support our celebration: Lisa Basellini and Ana Maria Espinoza. These people are a significant part of the backbone of our community. All of the youth team riders and their parents and coaches attended. They were able to hear Ann Schneider speak about the importance of volunteering and how it helps keep the cost of dressage and combined training competitions much less than it could be. Our future is bright! Lisa Toaldo, current Dressage Chair and former past President arranged the wonderful get together and presented the past Presidents with a wonderful gift to commemorate ESDCTA’s 50th anniversary. It was a very special time seeing the past, present, and future represented that evening. It was a night I will cherish. I need to give a huge thank you to my mom, Bernice Lemack, for making sure the cake was perfect and the corsages for the past Presidents were beautiful. It always takes a team to make wonderful things happen! Past Presidents: Heidi Lemack (2017) Lisa Toaldo (2014) Susan Lax (2011) Tara Bowles (2008) Liz Schuster (2005) Fran Crocco (2002) Marsha Montgomery (1999) Gary Maholic (1996) Mary Gadek (1993) Karen Waldron (1990) Julie Herbst 1987 Joanne Bradley (1984 ) Jane Gilbert (1981 *) Marilyn Payne (1978 *) Lazelle Knocke We thank them all for their service.

A Community Coming Together to Help a Friend By, Heidi Lemack

On Friday August 30, Kevin Babington, a renowned Irish show jumper rider based in Allentown, NJ, suffered a severe spinal cord injury on course at the Hampton Classic. I was asked if ESDCTA could set up a donation box for to collect money for the Kevin Babington Family Fund. This money would help pay for Kevin’s medical and rehab needs, as well as help support his wife and children.

COLLECTIVE REMARKS

The ESDCTA Board immediately said “yes!” We set up a donation bucket at the secretary’s desk at both the ESDCTA NJ Horse Trials on Sept. 29 and the ESDCTA Dressage Championships, Team competition and schooling show on October 5 and 6. We raised over $800 For Kevin and his family. It is just amazing how the horse community rallies around each other regardless of sport. Kevin and his family are of the same ilk. On August 30 in the morning before he was injured, they had opened their Florida farm for horses evacuating before Hurricane Dorian. His wife, Diana, has shared many personal stories and those told to her about Kevin’s nature to help every living being from turtles to horses and fish, and always people in need. I am very happy that ESDCTA could provide some help on his road to recovery. But…this amazing story goes on. The secretary for the ESDCTA NJ Horse Trials received a letter from Ashley Stout’s mother, Susan. For those who don’t know, 13-yearold Ashley Stout and “Avante Garde” a 7-year old Westphalian gelding were preparing to represent the Area II Young Rider Training Three-Day Team at The Event at Rebecca Farm, in addition to grooming for the Area II North American Youth Championships (NAYC) team. They were schooling cross-country when her and her horse suffered a fatal rotational fall in early July. Ashley had won a gift certificate to the ESDCTA NJ Horse Trials at the Area II year end awards. Susan, Ashley’s mom, wanted another Junior to benefit from the gift certificate and requested that the lowest scoring junior rider be awarded the certificate and included a #ride4Ashley hat to be given along with the gift certificate. Are you already amazed by Susan? Well, the lowest scoring JR/YR was Amanda Beale-Clement. When she received her gift certificate (a return of her entry fee), she promptly spoke with her mother Susie, and they put the money from the gift certificate into the Kevin Babington collection box. Susan Stout had written at the bottom of her letter to the secretary…”Thank you for honoring Ashley and passing a little slice of her on to the Junior winner. I hope they smile.” Not only did the Junior smile…she passed it on.

I’ve changed by attitude about my daily warm-up, not the warm-up itself, just my thinking about it. Every day I get on PJ and he’s a slug. No matter how well our ride the day before ended, he starts out the same way – like a western pleasure horse. Literally, that slow. It used to frustrate me to no end, not to mention all of the energy expended trying to motivate him. I tried a myriad of different techniques to get him to go, including galloping around the ring on the buckle, multiple transitions, small circles to activate the hind end. You name it, I tried it. None of it has made any difference; it always took him 20-30 minutes to get him into gear. So, now, instead of getting frustrated, I look at it as an opportunity to get myself organized. His slow gait allows me to adjust my position, straighten my shoulders, get my feet deep in my stirrups, think about what I want to accomplish with our ride. After we’ve jogged around a bit, then I start to ask him to come together, but I let the process take it’s time. And, without fail, after 20-30 minutes, I have my dressage horse back. For a while this summer, I wasn’t excited to ride PJ, which is totally unfair to him. But, now, with my shifted outlook, I appreciate PJ for the wonderful horse he is. And when he’s ready to work, he’s really ready to work, and we have a lot of fun (or at least I do). It’s funny how nothing on the outside has changed – PJ is still PJ, but since I changed my way of thinking, I’m just happier.

Stay Out of Your Head and Have Fun By, Montana Coleman

Well, another show season is over! Over the past 6 months I have been writing articles documenting different highs and lows of my journey. Looking ahead, I have one more year in high school…. translation, one more year of riding the same amount I have been....then off to college. Boy, that will change things for sure! I'm not sure how my riding will look while in college but that is for another time. Thinking about my upcoming “last year” (not sure of which horse(s) to ride or what level to show) left me wanting to conquer my fear of riding faster, younger horses. A few months ago, I wrote an article explaining how a “horse show gone wrong” left me terrified to ride younger horses again. Shortly after that experience, I did try to ride a younger horse, but I just wasn't relaxing and my riding was getting to the point where it wasn't fun anymore. So, I decided to put things on hold for a while with the “riding a younger horse thing” and concentrated on riding two older horses for show season. Besides, I also had a massive amount of schoolwork to finish for junior year, so it was probably a smart call to not put any additional stress on my shoulders. Nevertheless, as show season finally came to a close, I really wanted to face my fear – eventually. I would literally play mind games with myself and debate whether I should or shouldn't try riding a younger horse that night. Well, one particular night seemed like a good opportunity to overcome my fear because it was a slightly warmer day and I was just supposed to have a typical lesson on Duncan, so I shouldn’t have been feeling

any additional pressure. My mom recommended that I just wait until I got to the barn that night and then decide, since I was having such a hard time making up my mind beforehand. Well, I have to admit that I chickened out. I probably thought about it too much and made myself too scared and nervous to try that night. Sigh. I guess that night was not the night. Like my former trainer once said to my mom, “She will get to the point where the desire to ride these horses will be stronger than the fear.” I just wondered when that would that be. I came to a conclusion: if I was really going to do this, I would have to text my trainer ahead of time so that I would truly be committed in my mind and wouldn't chicken out again. So, that’s what I did. Wednesday night was the big night and I think I was slightly reassured that my friend had rode this horse a couple nights ago with good results. Nevertheless, sure enough, around midday, my nerves started to pester me. There was only one way I was ever going to get over this fear, and I knew the first time was going to be the hardest. I was so nervous when my lesson time finally came around that you could actually see the stiffness in my body. However, as my lesson went on, I relaxed and actually had fun! This horse was awesome! His canter was smooth and he didn't even take off on me. I was literally smiling from ear to ear as we cantered. Not only did I make the first step in overcoming my fear, but I actually enjoyed riding this younger horse. Now, I know that the fear is not going to be magically gone and I'm sure it will take more rides and more experience to get more comfortable, but I am not going to give up on it. The more I ride these younger horses, the more I will get comfortable with them. Even so, I think it is extremely important to anyone who is trying to overcome a riding fear to stay out of their head. What I mean is, try not to obsess over that first step and instead create a different, more positive picture in your head. I know this is easier said than done, but as in my case, this fear was stopping me from doing something that turned out to be incredibly fun. Besides, after the first step, each step after this will most likely be easier and, who knows, I might just show one of these younger horses next show season. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.'”

News from Outside the Ring Another Legend Lost I hate to post obituaries, but another legendary horse has died. The event horse, Custom Made, passed on October 2 at the ripe old age of 34 years. He was an imposing 17.1 hh irish Sport Horse gelding, foaled in Ireland in 1985 and imported to the United States in 1995. He was owned by Joseph Zada of Xandaruius, LLC, but was a partner with David O’Connor, who needs no introduction. In their first year together, they won the Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI3P* and it only got better from there. They went on to place 5th for the United States Eventing Team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, and then won gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. But that wasn’t the end, the pair kept racking up wins. In 2004, Custom Made was formally retired, and was inducted into the United States Eventing Hall of Fame in 2009. The O’Connor’s honored him with a comfortable retirement at their Stonehall Farm, The Plains, Virginia. Warmblood Babies at Risk Research into Warmblood fragile foal syndrome (WFFS) has increased in recent years, with stallions posting their testing results, so breeders can make smart decisions regarding potential mattings. WFFS often does not result in a live foal, but when it does, the foal suffers from poor skin quality, mouth lesion, and joint issues, and has to be euthanized. Although widely recognized (but not common) in Europe and the United States, no cases have been reported in Brazil. Nevertheless, a new study has found that Warmbloods in Brazil carry a copy of the mutation that causes WFFS at a rate of about 6%, which is similar to other parts of the world. WFFS is a recessive disease, meaning both parents must carry the gene and pass it onto the foal to show clinical signs; and therefore, is not frequently seen. However, because it is such a severe condition, breeding two carries together should be done with caution. Here’s the article out of Brazil: Dias NM, de Andrade DGA, Teixeira-Neto AR, Trinque CM, Oliveira-Filho JP, Winand NJ, Araújo JP Jr, Borges AS. Warmblood Fragile Foal Syndrome causative single nucleotide polymorphism frequency in Warmblood horses in Brazil. Vet J. 2019 Jun;248:101-102.

What a Year! By, Paige Zimmerman

I’m back after my little break from writing last month, and what an incredible two months it has been! I have A LOT of news and much to write about. In this short span of time, I accomplished many of the goals that I’ve been working towards for multiple years. I earned my USDF Bronze Medal, competed successfully at a USDF Regional Championship, and qualified for the 2020 National Dressage Seat Medal Finals, which will be held at Lamplight Equestrian Center in Illinois…. And I still don’t really believe it! First and foremost, Buddy helped me earn my USDF Bronze Medal, which requires 2 scores each from First, Second, and Third Level. This was a dream of mine for a long time, and when we earned our Second Level scores in 2018, I felt the potential for Third Level in 2019. It definitely wasn’t without challenges. Buddy is very capable of doing Third Level work, potentially even Fourth, but he often has different ideas. Most of the beginning of the summer, he experienced soundness issues caused by abscesses and playing too hard in the field. In August, we finally felt ready to register him for a recognized show, but he developed yet another abscess with only about a week to recover. This sent us all into a panic, and we scrambled to resolve it before the show. We were able to, had a successful day and earned that first Third Level qualifying score. With one score remaining and down to the wire on the season ending, we registered for Stone Tavern on September 7. We made it to the Horse Park of New Jersey without incident, but as soon as we entered the competition arena, Buddy decided it would be fun to be frisky as well as vocal! He did a lot of neighing, calling and groaning during the test, and his flying changes definitely were “flying”. Overall, the test was good and I was incredibly proud of him for working so hard. Plus, he made me laugh, so that kept me relaxed. To my surprise, we earned our last qualifying score for the Bronze Medal and we won the class! Over the span of three years, two remarkable teachers, Buddy and Olivia, had helped me achieve that long held goal. I was elated.

Also in September, Olivia and I made the trip to Saugerties New York, to compete in the USDF Region 8 Championships and NEDA Fall Festival at the HITS on the Hudson showgrounds. I brought Ducati and Olivia brought Flying Colors (aka Muppet), both of whom are owned by Brenda Curnin. We departed from home base Travelda Farm on Wednesday September 18, and made it to the showgrounds with plenty of time to settle in, familiarize the horses with the venue, and school. It was a beautiful, sunny and cool day, and everything was going perfectly. The next morning, I was to compete in a First Level Test 2 Open class, which was intended to be a practice class for the actual First Level Jr/Yr Championship on Saturday. Our ride time was around 8:40 in the morning, so it was an early day for all of us. Of course, just before I mounted, a very thick cloud of fog rolled in and blanketed the entire showgrounds. I’d never seen anything like it. I could hardly see right in front of us as we walked to the arena. My mom could barely see me in the warmup, and all of the golf carts, bleachers, tents, plants, flags, and other objects surrounding the arenas looked terrifying to Ducati. Needless to say, our ride definitely was not our best. There was tension and distractedness on Ducati’s part, but I couldn’t do anything about it other than be calm myself and constantly reassure Ducati. The circumstances surrounding the ride were simply not good, so I rode very conservatively. Regardless, we earned about 67%, and we placed 3rd overall and we won the Jr/Yr Division for the class. I was so proud of Ducati for keeping his wits about him, especially since when we first went into the warm up he felt like a ticking time bomb ready to go off! On Friday, September 20, we had a really beautiful schooling ride, and Olivia and I felt that we were well prepared for the Championship class. On Saturday, Ducati warmed up great and felt amazing, but as I trotted around the arena preparing to enter for our test, I discovered that our brakes were not exactly working. Ducati was really happy to go forward but not to come back! Our first halt wasn’t perfect. He was very eager to move, so I just saluted quickly and went into 22

the trot work, which went well and so did the walk. We earned a few 9s, including on one of the leg yields, which I’m very proud of. As we transitioned into the canter, I realized my half-halts still weren’t getting through as well as in the warmup. But on the bright side, our lengthenings were some of our best of the entire season. I left the arena very, very happy, but I had no idea what sort of score I would get since he was obviously moving much bigger than I was asking for or even used to. Later, when I received the text that would inform me of my score, I did a double-take: the judge at B had given us a 67% while the judge at C had given us a 77%. I can make sense of this huge disparity in that he definitely was forward, engaged, and straight, but the judge at B clearly was able to see the tension more so than the judge at C. Regardless, my final score was a bit over 72%, and I was ecstatic. There were 34 rides in the class, so it was a long afternoon as we waited for final placings. I desperately hoped to place in the top 8, but didn’t expect anything amazing, so when the class was finally finished and it was announced that we had come in 2nd, I could hardly believe it. We were Reserve Champions! I could tell that Ducati was proud of himself too, and he looked right at the camera as we stood for photos. And for good reason; he’s the best boy in the entire world! With Earth, Wind, and Fire playing in the background for the 21st of September, Ducati and I enjoyed an incredible victory lap. It was awesome. On Sunday, our last day of showing, we had the Dressage Seat Medal Semi-Final for 14-18 year olds. This class involves walking, trotting, and cantering as a group, plus doing a short individual pattern. To qualify for the 2020 National Championships during Festival of Champions at Lamplight, we needed to place first or second in this class, so I was aiming for the stars. I met Olivia at the warmup, and since she had been there observing the 13 & Under class before I arrived, she described their pattern. I immediately stopped and started to worry since what she was describing did not sound like the 13 & Under pattern I saw posted on the show office door a few days prior. We scrambled to get a copy of the 14-18 pattern, and sure enough, it was different from what I thought I had seen. That meant that I had about 5 minutes to memorize the correct pattern. Luckily, in August I had watched the 2019 Dressage Seat Medal Finals on Lamplight’s

livestream, and I recognized the pattern. The class was then directed into the arena as a group. One of the first things I noticed was how much bigger Ducati was compared to all of the other horses and ponies, and how much bigger his movement was. I definitely had a challenge since now I needed to figure out how I was going to maintain my spacing while also listening to the judge’s instructions, keeping my position, using my aids effectively, and trying to remember the new pattern I’d just learned. During the group portion of the class, I did a ton of circles and tried to stay as far away from everyone else as possible. I worried that the judge would hold this against me because I kept crossing the arena when we all had been instructed to stay to the outside. It did not help either that Ducati seemed quite eager to do his big fancy trot. For the canter, we were divided into two groups, which made it easier to keep my spacing, but as soon as I asked for the canter for the first time, Ducati promptly took off in a big lengthening. Luckily, there was no one in my immediate space, but it took the entire short side and half of the long side to bring him back. When it came time for the pattern, I was the first to go, so I didn’t have the chance to watch someone else do it before me. My mind went blank on a few transition locations (I halted a letter too late, for example), but I still ended up showing all of the required movements and I rode the pattern itself accurately. The mistakes worried me though. When everyone finished the pattern, we were called to the middle of the arena for awards. I stood and waited as they called 8th, 7th, 6th, and so on. I still had not been called and there were more than three of us remaining when 3rd place was named. Then 2nd was announced and I worried I’d totally messed up with the pattern mistakes and the circles, and I thought we didn’t place at all. But then my name was called for 1st place! It didn’t hit me right away. I was shocked. After taking our pictures with the big blue ribbon and silver engraved plate, I asked the judges if my pattern mistakes had made any impact on my score. They told me that it was a small deduction, but they liked how I kept the spacing between the other riders and that I was able to control Ducati’s big gaits. So, the feedback was the opposite of what I thought it might be. I was ecstatic and when I was about halfway back to the barns, it really hit me. I had won the Region 8 Dressage Seat Medal 14-18 Semi-Final and was qualified for the Finals at USEF Festival of Champions 2020 at Lamplight Equestrian Center. I admit that I cried a little. It was an amazing feeling, and it’s almost surreal to think about it, even now a month later. But the icing on the cake came just recently. USDF runs a year end awards program similar to the ESDCTA high score award. There is a “Horse of the Year” title for each level, which is awarded to the horse and rider combination with the highest median score in the entire country (out of 8 scores over 60%). There are also Adult Amateur and Jr/Yr high score rankings, and All-Breeds Awards (which are high score awards specific to each breed registry). This summer, Ducati and I were able to earn just 8 scores from 4 recognized shows at First Level. Currently, only the preliminary results 24

are out, but I am pleasantly surprised to find that our median of 71.597% has landed us at the top of the rankings. We placed 3rd out of over 75 horse and rider combinations in the First Level Jr/Yr division and 1st in the American Hanoverian Society (AHS) First Level Jr/Yr division. We are also ranked 6th in the AHS First Level Open division. The AHS only awards placings through 5th, so we are just barely missing out on the ribbons by about 0.3%. But there’s always next year! And, finally, in the National First Level Horse of the Year rankings (which is an Open division, as well), we are 27th out of over 450 horse/rider combinations. I could not be any happier with that. Even if we had placed 200th, I would’ve been happy to just be listed in the standings! For Ducati and my first competition year, and my first year showing in big competitions at big venues, these results are an absolute dream come true. And, the cherry on top of all of this is that Olivia and Flying Colors are Materiale Horse of the Year 4 & 5 Year Old Mare Champions with a whopping score of 81.550%! So this is where I thank everyone who has supported me and given me opportunities I’d never have had otherwise, who have listened to my dreams and goals and helped me forge a path forward, without skepticism or self-interest, who have literally worked with me to ensure my success even through their own challenges and disappointments, and who have never once questioned or regretted the journey. These people are the same every month, week, day, hour, minute, and second… Olivia Steidle, Brenda Curnin, and my parents, primarily. But I never forget that there’s also our close-knit equestrian community of everyone at Travelda Farm (Quakertown, PA), and those who run the shows and all the volunteers, and members of ESDCTA and other organizations who give so much of their time, energy, and knowledge, who all together make this sport so special. But just saying thank you isn’t enough. I hope I make you all proud, and I promise I will do everything I can to continue because that’s what’s most important to me. COLLECTIVE REMARKS
