President’s Message As the show season starts to wind down for the year, we reflect back on what a crazy year it has been. And not just the shortened show season due to Covid-19, but many parts of the country have had to deal with hurricanes, floods, wildfires, tornadoes, and several other natural disasters. I’m sure all of us hope that the pandemic dies out soon, and 2021 brings normality. As an Eventer, I was extremely disheartened to learn of the withdrawal of the Plantation Field venue for Horse Trials due to one misinformed person angrily writing their opinion on social media. Eventing is a small sport which relies heavily on access to land and the generosity of land owners, and a large number of volunteers. These types of situations do nothing to protect and advance the sport that so many of us love. USEA has an official evaluation process set up that allows a rider to evaluate and make comments about an event, and all evaluations are passed up the chain to those who handle the serious issues, and also passed on to the organizer for future reference. This process is available for both positive and negative feedback. While most riders at events never use this process, it’s extremely helpful to event organizers to receive these evaluations. If you do have comments about an event or show, including Dressage shows, please contact the appropriate officials or organizations before ranting on social media, which isn’t helpful on any front and may never make it back to the people who can actually make a difference. For anyone who attended the ESDCTA horse trials at the Horse Park, please fill out an evaluation so we can know if there are improvements needed for next year. Speaking of volunteers, both the sports of Dressage and Eventing require a large number of volunteers, without whom competitions and shows would not be able to be held. Many volunteers do it because they love the sport and want to make sure it continues, some do it in order to earn hours required for year-end awards, and some do it because they love to watch horses perform. Many of these volunteers drive long distances and spend hours on their feet just to help out. Please, please, please be sure to thank the volunteers at any event you attend. Even if you’re focused on your riding before you actually compete, please remember to thank the volunteers when you’re finished. A small word goes a long way to keeping volunteers happy so they keep coming back. Scores for year-end awards must be earned between November 1, 2019 and October 31, 2020 and applications for year-end awards are due on November 5. Be sure to include your application, copies of tests or the USDF or USEA record for recognized shows, and copies of volunteer hours forms or the buyout form. And thank you all for hanging in there this year and supporting all our local shows. Sincerely,
Holly Cornell President

Young Riders and the Use of the Double Bridle: Yes, No, Maybe By Paige Zimmerman
With winter training season fast approaching, I wanted to write a few opinion-based articles about our sport as a whole and what possibly could improve it, or, at least, level the playing field. To that end, this month I will present some thoughts that I have wanted to voice out loud regarding use of the double bridle. For a while now, I have been following the FEI, USEF, and USDF rules regarding use of the double bridle in competition. Recently, the FEI became more lenient about requiring the double bridle in CDIs. As of last year, FEI Juniors (equivalent to 3rd level) and FEI Young Riders (equivalent to PSG) are no longer required to compete in the double bridle. It is my understanding that all riders competing in small tour classes (PSG and I1) at 1 to 2-star CDIs have the option to choose between a snaffle or a double bridle, as well. Personally, I feel that these are the right decisions, especially for youth riders. If the FEI is slowly but surely working towards making double bridles optional at all (or nearly all) levels of competition, they will be creating a much more even playing field while also helping the welfare of the horses. For the FEI Junior Riders, who can be as young as 14, and the FEI Young Riders, who are as young as 16, I feel that these rule changes will result in riders not feeling pressured to ride and school in the double bridle before they are ready. The priority of youth riders should be developing tact and feel for proper contact with the horse’s mouth and that education should be done mostly in the snaffle bridle, in my opinion as someone who has been training for these classes. Dressage riders need time to understand our sport conceptually but we also need time to develop our bodies. We need to understand the concepts of contact, self-carriage and throughness, but 6

there is also the much more difficult physical requirement of our bodies becoming effective at creating and maintaining proper contact, selfcarriage, and throughness. This is also for the welfare of our horses, which should be our priority over just our own personal success in the show ring. For example, once the rider understands intellectually that they do not have to hold the horse’s head up nor use physical force to hold the horse’s head down, only then can (or should) our education include using the double bridle and only once in a while. The purpose of the double bridle is to further heighten our ability to be quiet with our aids. The very presence of the curb bit in the horse’s mouth already makes the rider’s aids much more effective, and so the rider must be infinitely more tactful. If a rider feels that they need to rush to learn how to use the double bridle before they are ready just so they can compete in the youth FEI divisions, incorrect use of the double bridle is being encouraged by our governing organizations. This benefits no one, least of all the horse. This is when we see horses and riders getting into pulling matches and resistance in the horse’s body, hollow backs, horse’s mouths open, and curb bits turned parallel to the ground. I also feel that if the rider schools in the double bridle too much, it can muddle the aids for both horse and rider. Since a curb bit can be such a strong tool, when riders become dull to it and begin pulling, the horse will only pull back more. Reverting to the snaffle in between schooling in the double bridle helps provide a balance, and it develops tact in the rider. When double bridles were required by FEI for youth competitors, I am sure that many felt the need to school in the double every day without taking the time to switch back to the snaffle and “reset” their understanding of the aids. Just because the horse feels lighter in the double at one point does not mean they will stay that way; horse and rider need to learn to be light with one another in either bridle. Yes, I definitely feel that it is important to know how to use the double bridle, but the understanding of contact can only come from practice and proper training in the

snaffle. Plus, since the double bridle can allow the rider to be quieter with their aids (when used correctly), if we see youth riders and even Grand Prix riders able to be just as quiet and tactful with the snaffle, it is even more impressive since we can see that the horse has been even more properly schooled to become light and through. Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel, who often comes to our barn for clinics, has trained many horses to the Grand Prix in only the snaffle bridle, including one that she took to US Dressage Finals – and they won the Grand Prix freestyle… in a snaffle! I have heard riders also say that they like to use the double bridle at shows for more control. However, I feel that if the horse is nervous, what they will want to do is shorten their neck and either run away or stop moving completely, or they will want to throw their neck downward to curl and possibly buck. In all of these instances, I can only imagine that the presence of a curb bit would make things worse. If the horse is tight and trying to run away while the rider is holding the horse up in the front, all that tense energy will get balled up in the neck, causing a hollow back while the horse’s chin moves toward their chest. If the horse wants to suck behind the rider’s leg and stop moving, the double bridle can prevent the horse from feeling supported by the rider’s contact, and they will not want to trust that they can push their neck forward to the contact to allow the energy to pass through from behind. If the horse curls his head down and bucks while the rider holds, the curb bit will only keep the horse’s head hooked downward even further and more against the rider. And yes, all of these things can still happen with the snaffle bridle, but the curb bit on the double bridle can make rider corrections more severe and cause horses to overreact in ways that they normally would not. To be clear, these are opinions I have drawn based on observations, research, and personal experience. I’m not judging if fellow riders are bad or good for using a double bridle or not. But I do feel strongly that there needs to be time and balance in order for horses and riders to be properly educated, especially for youth who are relatively inexperienced. Personally, I am glad for the rules change by the FEI. I feel it can only improve the quality of education and welfare of both riders and horses over the long run.

My Experience Riding in a College Equine Program By Cameron Mohr
I am 21 years old and a senior at Centenary University. I am an equine studies major and Captain of the Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) team at school. Going to a college with an equine program has given me a much different college experience than others. I get to ride horses for class, and I still pinch myself sometimes when I go to tack up a horse to ride and think about how I’m getting credits towards my degree for this. While other students sit at a desk to learn during class, I’m out at the barn interacting with the horses. At Centenary, we have over 100 horses in our equine program, and all of them offer something for each student to learn from. Before coming to Centenary, I rode the same horse for 3 straight years. Once coming to school, that all changed, and it was all about catch riding. In your riding class, you get the opportunity to ride a new horse almost every week, which is a great learning experience. The idea of riding a new horse each time is to help equine students become the best riders they can be by learning to adapt to all different horses and being able to figure out each type of ride. The horse you ride one week could be the polar opposite of the horse you ride the next. No part about this was easy for me coming into the program as a freshman, and it took me a long time to be able to figure out this whole catch riding thing. Trying a new horse every week can be a shock for people who are new to this, and honestly I found it scary to ride all these different horses who were all new to me.

With the IDA team, it was the same idea. Basically you go to a show at another school and use their horses. Your coach draws a random horse in your level and then you have 10 minutes to warm it up and go do your test. There are 4 levels in IDA, intro, lower training, upper training, and first level. I started at first level, and the first IDA show I ever went to was terrifying. I had no idea how I was going to be able to ride a horse I’ve never been on for 10 minutes then go do a dressage test and get a good score, it seemed impossible to me. The first couple shows were rough, and I just could not get the hang of it, but finally after being on the team for a year, it started to click and I finally won at a horse show. I went to IDA Nationals in 2019 and placed 4th. With only a couple months left at school, I still have so much to learn and so many horses I still want to ride. IDA and the Centenary riding program have taught me more than I could have ever imagined. There is nothing easy about catch riding, but it has been the most rewarding experience. Riding all these different horses has made me a stronger, more experienced rider, and I am so grateful for that. I once heard someone at school say, “if you love riding the horse, that means you’ve figured out how to ride it and now you need to ride one you don’t like.” That is one of the most true statements that could be made about this program. I have ridden horses that I didn’t necessarily enjoy, but with time I figured them out and now I love riding them. Every horse has something to offer and teach every rider. Equestrians Unite! By Alycia Skye
“You are just a backyard rider.” That sentence still resonates with me years later. It was told to me by my boss of what I believed to be my dream job. I had landed myself a job at a fancy show barn as a groom, full of drool-worthy imported horses. I worked my butt off for them, driving an hour at 4:50 in the morning six days a week and not getting home until sunset. But, no matter how hard I worked for them, I was constantly reminded of my place, despite just graduating college with my Associates in equine science and management. I was told I did not know anything and that I was just a backyard rider over and over again. Truth-be-told, I accepted it, being held by all the promises they had made me of wintering in Florida, learning from the best, and getting to ride their fancy horses. Eventually though, it came to an end and I was crushed. In these times of smartphones and streaming services, I feel like more kids are inside living in a virtual world rather than outside in the real-world, skinning knees and eating dirt. In simple words, I feel that we are losing the young people in the equestrian industry, scared away by the expense, and the privilege, and lack of diversity. Going to the barn when you are young is the same as going to school, it’s all about fitting in, except whereas a pair of streetwear leggings can cost you somewhere between $10-$20, riding pants can cost upwards of $100. But, shouldn’t we be supporting these kids and encouraging them to be the next generation of horsemen and horsewomen, regardless of things like their social status? My call is to every rider out there, anyone who loves horses, to be proud of who you are. No matter if you have an indoor or just a grass field; if you are riding a grade chestnut or a papered warmblood; if you are cantering around in jeans and a t-shirt or

a high-end sunshirt and breeches; we are all equestrians. We need to accept everyone in the industry because really, we all mount on the same side. I had previously taken the comment of being just a backyarder as negative, but now I am proud of it. It makes the wins, no matter how small, that much more rewarding. It means you have grit and determination. It means you understand the importance of working hard for what you believe in. I spent years riding my horse in jeans and a plastic helmet and I loved every minute of it because all that mattered was I was doing what made me happy. Even today, I show in a Wintec saddle and a consignment show coat, and you know what? We kick some butt in the show ring! It doesn’t matter what tack you ride in or the clothes that you wear; what really matters is the passion you have for the sport and the love for the animal and I think we really need to foster that in the next generation of riders.

News from Outside the Ring Plantation Fields Future For around 2 decades, the annual Plantation Field International Horse Trials has been a premier eventing destination in Chester County, PA, and numerous other competitions have been held on the property. However, the name of the facility, Plantation Field, has led to controversy. Although the word is associated with slavery, the farm, itself, never has been. In June, writers from EventingNation.com approached USEA and USEF about the racial insensitivity of the name. In August, EventingNation.com discussed the issue with Denis Glaccum, the organizer and owner of Plantation Field Equestrian Events. Glaccum tried to talk to Cuyler Walker, the owner of the property, about it. Walker refused to change the name of the 300acre site, which his family has owned for generations (and is also called “Logan’s Field after the family). Instead, he cancelled the lease with the event organizer. It’s future as a venue for any competition is unknown. Equine Disease Update Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) was detected in mosquitos in Atlantic County, NJ, last month, and the NJ Department of Agriculture recommends vaccinating all livestock. There was also one confirmed EEE case in a 4-year-old unvaccinated Thoroughbred mare in Atlantic County. The mare presented with severe neurological signs and fever and was humanely euthanized. She is the first case this year in NJ. If you remember last year, EEE was everywhere in the state and humans were also infected. This disease can be deadly to both man and beast, so take precautions. New Jersey Horse Racing in Jeopardy No one will argue that these are not tough times, and cuts need to be made. However, why does it have to come at the horse industry’s expense? The revised NJ budget leaves out the $20 million purse subsidy for horse racing. This money is crucial to keeping horse racing viable in the state. Both the Meadowlands and Freehold raceways are racing with full fields, which is great for the industry. But, without spectators due to COVID, It doesn’t help to bring in much revenue. We want racing to continue because what’s great for racing is great for all horse-related activities in NJ. Reach out to your legislatures and tell them you support racing and want the funds re-instated. Kissing (Spine): A Love (Great Success) Story By AnaMaria Espinosa
Let me say right off the bat that while this could have been a tragedy, it is actually a great success story, thanks to Smitty’s resilience, kindness, generosity, and to Cherie Caprio, Smitty’s owner, who displayed tenacity, perseverance, determination, and willingness to learn everything possible to rehabilitate Smitty. There was, of course, also his veterinarian, Dr. Elden Klayman, who’s medical care, guidance, supervision, and insights were invaluable in Smitty’s recovery, and me, his trainer. First, I must introduce Smithwick, aka Smitty, who is a 10- year-old warmblood-thoroughbred cross who was diagnosed with kissing spine in October 2018. Kissing spine refers to a condition in horses where the long, thin bones that project upward from each vertebra of the spinal column of the horse’s back touch each other. The resulting lack of space causes the processes to interfere with each other, reducing back mobility and causing pain during movement. Second, I will set the stage. Prior to diagnosis, while in training with me, Smitty showed signs of anxiety, nervousness, stress, spookiness, girthiness, and chronic diarrhea. He was often in distress while working around other horses. Smitty also had episodes of bolting without cause. We tried approaching his training patiently, using different horsemanship methods, believing that it was all emotional and mental for him, since we could not find actual sources of pain or lameness. Nevertheless, we felt a lot of tension in his lower (lumbar) back, and so, had a veterinarian examine his back. Radiographs found impinging dorsal spinous processes, commonly called kissing spine, in thoracic vertebrae 13 thru lumbar vertebrae 2 (T13-L2). To confirm this area as the site of pain, the next step was to block his back. Vet notes: This area was infiltrated with local anesthesia. The dorsal intervertebral spaces were injected on November 5, 2018, with a combination of a pitcher plant extract, methylprednisolone, and isoflupredone. Smitty was ridden 30 minutes later. He was much more comfortable.

Cherie’s background in physical therapy, nursing, and massage therapy was instrumental in Simity’s pain management, which was our primary concern. After careful consideration of the different options Dr. Klayman presented, Cherie chose to inject the sites and rehabilitate him. She ruled out surgery because of the necessary confinement, and long mental and physical recovery, as well as the cost because the insurance company refused to cover it. Furthermore, she wasn’t sure about the long-term effects of surgery. Then the hard work began. Smitty’s rehabilitation started with over 6 weeks of light ground work designed to improve alignment and flexibility. This included slow work in hand at the walk with a low bend on circles, allowing him to stretch forward and downward, while always maintaining the correct alignment in his body. It was important to allow him to manage his own body, sometimes keeping sessions short. Our goal in all of this work was to get the spinal processes to stretch and expand. Cherie did lots of flexibility work, as well, twice each day. Each exercise was held for about 10-15 seconds and repeated 5 times. There were 4 main exercises: • Carrot stretches down to the front feet • Belly lifts • Butt tucks • Lateral bends head to hip, hock, and ankle All of these exercises help to strengthen the core musculature and separate the spinous processes. Since Cherie expertise is in massage, she did a lot of that too to make him feel better. The next phase of the rehabilitation process included several weeks of lunging at the walk and trot. We focused on body alignment and balance by making sure he stretched forward and downwards during these sessions. We were advised to limit trot work and allow him to canter. However, cantering was very hard for him, so we decided it was best not to do that yet. He did get as much turn out as possible. It was vital to strengthen his abdominal muscles, giving him core stability to engage and lift the trunk and withers, as well as increase his flexibility through specific stretches and movements. We were fortunate enough to come across the book, “Core Conditioning for Horses,” and we followed the instructions of the author, Visconte Simon Cocozza, to help Smitty through his rehabilitation. Smitty’s exercises consisted of a few days a week lunging him with the Pessoa Lunging System. On other days we used the Equiband System on his belly and hind legs for core strengthening and to help stabilize his back. Long-lining was also implemented on some days, going straight first, driving him from the ground to avoid putting any weight on his back; we also included lateral work. COLLECTIVE REMARKS

Carrot stretches continued with lateral flexion to engage the trunk and pelvis. However, even after some time of lunging over cavaletti, we were still unable to canter him. We persevered. Once we felt that Smitty could carry himself, had better body alignment, and more strength throughout his topline (therefore gaining straightness and better rhythm), then and only then were we able to start riding him again. The ground work took until April, after which we started riding him again but only at the walk, using the book as our guide, and keeping him long, forward, and downwards, while doing lots of lateral exercises. At the beginning, we rode him every 2nd to 3rd day, and introducing The Equiband System. We had a few setbacks and bumps along the way to recovery, but we were listening and observing Smitty’s body language. We were always very willing to take a step back, to allow his confidence, well-being, and strength to return. Smitty progressed to trotting, again always keeping in mind his balance, mental, emotional, and physical state, as well as his self-carriage, body alignment, and looseness. When he began feeling much stronger, and had much more freedom, relaxation, and calmness, only then did we canter him. We started on the lunge line, just one circle, eventually progressing to two circles, and then introducing transitions. Only when he could canter gently, by our intention on the lunge, were we able to canter him under saddle. Finally, the happy ending. Our journey is still a work in progress, but Smitty is very confident and relaxed now, and he moves quite beautifully. When we notice that things may not be right for him, meaning that he is not in the right balance emotionally, it gets addressed immediately. Cherie looks at his body and releases tension through trigger points, or we adjust his training to what he needs on that day. Our goal in training is to create a lifting of the withers and chest through the engagement of the core musculature, from the energy coming from the hind legs, relaxation of the back and balance. I am so very grateful for the kindness and generosity of this magnificent horse, he has taught us to listen, to be mindful of what horses are always trying to communicate to us, and to always do the right thing for them. 16

The Amateur Dilemma By, Meredith Rogers
Fear is a funny thing. It’s very real but nothing you can touch or point a finger at and say “there it is!” It’s also nothing you can just leave on the kitchen table before you head to the barn. I remember when my fear of riding started. I was a freshman in college, full of expectation of showing on our intercollegiate equestrian team (read Cameron’s article about catch-riding in college). I was looking forward to my first lesson at school, which was on the flat; all went well. I had never jumped before, so I was a little nervous for my second lesson, but we did cavaletti gymnastic grids and it was fun. The third lesson is where it all began. Because it looked like I could ride pretty well after my first two endeavors, they gave me a greenbroke 4 yo. No biggy there. The problem came when the lesson was moved to the cross-country course. I told the instructor that I had never jumped before and she said don’t worry about and to just try the shorter fences (all about 2’6”). That mare was a saint and carried me over the jumps, but I was terrified and it went downhill from there. All subsequent lessons were jumping. I fell off numerous times over the years, and was never given good enough instruction to teach me to go over a jump correctly, so even when I didn’t fall off, I didn’t feel comfortable. That fear never left even when our school started a dressage program my senior year and I could leave jumping behind. The fear stayed with me when I graduated and started back with my old trainer showing Quarter horses on the flat. That fear became “my new normal” and I learned to compensate by taking baby steps when trying something new or avoiding situations all together (storm coming, I think I’ll just groom). I justified my trepidations by blaming it on biology. Fear is our brain’s

way of keeping us out of danger. This is definitely true and should not be discounted. But I knew it was holding me back and I couldn’t figure out how to return to where I was when I was a kid. I went years and years like this, more than 30 to be exact. Yesterday I rode my baby horse in the outside ring for the first time. Instead of being a nervous wreck just thinking about doing this, I was excited about seeing what would happen. To me, feeling this way is a bigger accomplishment that riding a grand prix test and just as legitimate. I am proud of myself because it wasn’t something that happened overnight and it wasn’t easy. The first step was buying PJ 10 years ago. He gave me so much confidence by only spooking as much as I could handle. I know that sounds strange, but every time he spooked, it was minor enough that I had no problem riding through it, making the idea of spooking less scary. Then came the baby horse. To be fair to him, I started reading as many books and articles I could find and watching tons of videos on overcoming fear, following what they all taught, with exercises both on and off the horse. Nevertheless, we had a lot of ups and downs, which cumulated in a single lesson about 6 months ago (right after getting back to riding post-COVID lockdown). We were having a particularly bad time of it, but my trainer was there and talked me through how to handle it step by step. We actually ended the ride on a good note. That was a lightbulb moment. If I could ride through the worst that this horse would do, I didn’t need to worry about the “what ifs” because I would be able to handle it. If fear, or just lack of confidence, is something you’ve been struggling with, know that being fearful is not an intellectual problem that you can reason away. Our neural biology changes similarly to becoming addicted to something. All of the steps I took, with the bad ride being The straw that broke the camels back, so to speak, shifted my neural biology back to a less fearful state. My journey may be unique in the details, but I’m nothing special in this regard. Here’s to finding your own path to riding bliss.

Horse Treats By, Meredith Rogers
Our country was founded on the back of a horse, so it was only appropriate that horses made their way into the White House. Ever since George Washington, our Presidents have utilized, enjoyed, and admired the magnificent horse. The original White House stables were built in 1800 by Thomas Jefferson as a simple Georgian brick building. The stables burned down in 1864 with President Lincoln’s son’s pony inside; Lincoln ran into the burning building in an attempt to save the pony but unfortunately, could not. In 1871, Ulysses S. Grant commissioned a high Victorian, mansard-roofed stable in that was expanded in 1891 to stall 25 horses, a carriage house, tack and harness rooms, and a living area for stable staff. The end of the horse era came in 1909 when President Taft converted the stable into a garage for his large steam cars. The stables were demolished two years later. The role of horses at the White House has also changed, going from utilitarian work machines and transportation to a good use of leisure time. President Taylor’s war veteran horse, Old Whitey, helped to mow the lawns from 1849-1850. President Grant was known to go on mad dashes with his trotters along Pennsylvania Avenue, and he even received a speeding ticket while trying to race a delivery van (the delivery van was able to keep up, so President Grant bought the horse pulling it). President Teddy Roosevelt did a lot of pleasure riding, and if you were invited to join him, you had to follow his Rules of the Road. The entire Roosevelt family loved horses so much that one of the sons decided to bring his pony upstairs in the White House elevator to cheer up his brother who was ill. When he was offered a car, President Roosevelt said, “The Roosevelts are horse people.” President Taft didn’t have much luck with horses, which is probably why he fell under the spell of the automobile, and President Coolidge was allergic but had a mechanical horse built for exercise. Subsequent Presidents had to enjoy horses on their home properties; President Johnson had a ranch in Texas, and President Reagan had one in California. The Kennedy’s pony, Macaroni, was normally housed in Virginia but made frequent visits to the White House, where he was often allowed to freely roam the grounds.
