President’s Message As we go forward into October (yes, time is flying by, LOL), we are celebrating our Eventing Championship champions, congratulating our members that competed at the Region 8 Championships and those who were at Devon, looking forward to our Region 1 youth team competition and Dressage Championships, and also wishing good luck to our members going to BLM’s and to Region 1 Championships in Virginia. In this issue, you will read about two amazing women who took on the Devon Horse Show this year with their young horses: Erin Gale and Meredith Rogers. We are looking forward to the Christina Stuckelberger Clinic 10/26-10/28 partially funded by The Dressage Foundation’s Violet Hopkin’s Grant which made this clinic affordable. We have plans for a new dressage test fix-a-test clinic for the early Spring of 2019 (yes, the tests change this year) with LVDA and the Horse Park of New Jersey. And we have a fantastic training symposium planned for April 6 and 7 with Lilo Fore organized by Kem Barbosa and Willette Brown at the HPNJ. If you are applying for Dressage and/or Eventing Year End Awards, please check the notice in this month’s newsletter for guidance and information. Looking forward to seeing you all!

Livin’ the Dream Dressage at Devon Style By Meredith Rogers
If you’ve lived in this area for any length of time you’ve heard of Dressage at Devon. Considered the “most prestigious dressage competition in the hemisphere,” Dressage at Devon hosts international competition and is the largest breed show in the world. Who wouldn’t want to be part of that?!? I definitely did, but since you have to be at fourth level or above or ride young horses it seemed like an impossibility. Every year we go as a barn to watch. Since the competitors come from all over, we are exposed to some really great riding that we don’t usually see at our local shows. And, of course, there are the musical freestyles, which draw Olympic-quality rides, and being under the lights, always seem special. Three years ago, my desire to be a part of it all prompted me to volunteer. Since I had scribed a lot at ESDCTA competitions, I felt qualified to request that job, and they gave it to me! I got to scribe for the breed show, something I had never been exposed to. It didn’t take long to come up to speed and I got to see the debut of some pretty amazing babies, and learned a ton about conformation and function. The second year I helped in the warm-up ring for the breed show and was up-close and personal with the breeders and handlers themselves. At the time I never thought I would be among them a year later, so I didn’t pay as much attention as I should have. Maybe it was having volunteered for the breed show that put the idea in my head, but 6

I decided to try in-hand work with Leo. Since I wasn’t riding him, I thought it would be a good way to bond (see my write up of the ESDCTA Memorial Day show in the July 2018 issue). After our first time out, I thought about taking him to Dressage at Devon. The notion got less and less crazy as the summer progressed. I waited a week after the opening date but out went my entry for the KWPN and Amateur Handler classes. It was becoming real. My friend Kelly has been with me for this whole journey with Leo, and she was invaluable help throughout our Devon adventure. I got Leo a stall and us a hotel room for Monday because both classes were Tuesday and I figured we could go home right after. When the ride times came out those plans had to change because our Amateur Handler class was at 9 at night! I immediately called the hotel and we could extend our stay. Crisis avoided because there was no way I could drive us all home at midnight. Devon is a world unto itself. They have their system, which works but is total chaos. When we showed up there were horses and trailers and trucks and people going everywhere. We were directed to our stall, which had a great view of the Wheeler ring, and given a map to where we needed to park the trailer, which was 20 minutes away. It was after 5 pm by the time we were situated and I could lead Leo around the grounds. That turned out to be just perfect because it was already dark and the lights were on – good practice for our class the next day. It was cold and windy and the flags were flapping, baby horses were rearing, and generators were humming, but Leo settled nicely and we both were able to take it all in. Both of the rings were

available and set up to practice in and we took full advantage. Surrounded by some pretty amazing looking animals, I couldn’t believe I was actually here among them. We left the grounds confident that Leo was okay in his stall with his pile of hay, enjoyed a big dinner at a classic diner, and crashed at the hotel with the help of a Benadryl. Since my KWPN class wasn’t until 1:30 pm, we could sleep in until 6 am. The hotel provided breakfast and everyone there was also showing. We met people from as far as Canada and Florida. Everyone had a story about why they had come to show. Some were professionals, some came every year, and others had similar dreams as me. Kelly and I fit right in. The same chaos that greeted us on Monday was in full swing when we arrived to feed Leo his breakfast except that it was now pouring rain. Although it wouldn’t be Devon without a little rain, this was a little much. I got the day sheet and planned my day. Erin, who is also on the ESDCTA Newsletter Committee was also showing her horse in-hand in the Thoroughbred class at 9 am, so we made sure to be there for that. See her write-up of her experience in this issue. Kelly and I watched a bunch of classes to see how it was done and did a little shopping. I took advantage when the rain let up a little to walk Leo around. He was much more chill, so we rushed back to his stall when the deluge started up again. Before we knew it, it was time to braid and clean him up. I couldn’t believe it, but the rain stopped 15 minutes before I had to be up at the ring. With breed shows, you are assigned a “ride time” but because the professional handlers show so many horses, the order of go changes by the minute to allow hand-offs. I ended up going second. Although it wasn’t raining, the ring was soup. I thought my boots were going to get sucked off and Leo wasn’t sure he could trot pretty in the muck but we muddled through. As I left the ring, it hit me…I had just shown at Dressage at Devon. I was there in the Dixon Oval with my fabulous horse, and we had done the best job we could. As we watched the leader board to see where we landed, the rain returned, so as soon as we were bumped out of the top 6, we headed back to our stall. We ended up with a great score but 8

just out of the ribbons. We had a lot of time until our second class, so we watched some more, did a little more shopping, and went back to the diner for an early supper. As we every horse show, there is a lot of hurry-up and wait. The rain had stopped with enough time for the rings to dry out a little by our second class. Erin was already waiting in the holding area by the time we got there, and it was nice to see a friendly face. For this class we were in the Wheeler ring, which was not as well lit as the Dixon Oval. The light from the spotlights only bled a few feet from the triangle, leaving us surrounded by pitch blackness. The very minute that we entered the ring, someone by the stalls stared banging something loud enough for Leo to spook and the judge to make a comment. Urg. I couldn’t set him up as well as I had wanted to, but he walked off okay. Then came time to trot. The first leg of the triangle went really well. Then we made the turn and all of a sudden Leo stopped dead in his tracks. He was spooking at the activity that was happening in the other ring. We had practiced under similar conditions on Monday, so I couldn’t believe it. This was my one chance. I tapped him with the whip, which got his attention enough to resume, and we finished strong. But, I walked off defeated. Since we had been one of the first to go I was able to watch everyone else. They all seemed to get through without incident. The scores were being posted on a white board by the in-gate. I had gotten a 74.4. Kelly kept checking as I walked Leo around so he wouldn’t become bored, and with 2 horses to go, I was in 4th. I was so excited. I was going to get a ribbon! Turns out the fourth place stuck and I got to come back into the ring for awards. Since part of the Amateur Handler class is how well you deal with adversity, I guess the judge took that into consideration with our score. I couldn’t have been more thrilled, which didn’t help me sleep, which didn’t help when we had to wake up super early to go home. We were downstairs too early for breakfast and we weren’t the only ones. We drove the 20 minutes to the trailer and hooked up in the dark, but the sun was rising as we pulled into the show grounds. Thankfully, Leo took less time to load than usual. Kelly was going above and beyond to help me live my dream by driving Leo home for me because I hadn’t planned well and had signed up to volunteer on Wednesday.

As she drove out, I rushed to the volunteer room to grab some coffee and get my assignment. I was scribing again for the breed show. This time I had a different perspective. I got to observe some of the same horses that had been in my KWPN class. I had been disappointed to have been out of the ribbons, but seeing the professionals handle those horses put my score into perspective. I realized that we had done a darn good job. At the end of another very long day, I left satisfied that I had gotten all I could out of my Dressage at Devon experience, and could move on to the next chapter of Leo’s and my journey.

With a Little Hard Work and Dedication, Dreams Can Come True By: Erin Gale
With a little hard work and dedication, dreams can come true. This has been my life mantra for the past few years, especially when it comes to my horse ambitions. When I first started on my dressage journey a few years ago, I mapped out all of the “bucket list” things that I wanted to accomplish. While that list was wide ranging, one thing that was very certain was that I wanted to show in the Dixon Oval at Dressage at Devon. For anyone that follows the Dressage sport, you can appreciate the historical meaning aspect of the Dixon Oval and the excitement and sense of accomplishment one might get while getting to show there. In our past June edition of our ESDCTA newsletter, I wrote an article about venturing out and competing for the first time in the DSHB Adult Amateur Handler class at our ESDCTA Memorial Day show, with my 10-year-old Thoroughbred gelding affectionally known as “Clifford”. Clifford and I had a successful outing at the Memorial Day show and I felt like we seemed to “fit in” in the in-hand classes. I left that show thinking to myself “where else could these in hand classes take us?” I knew that Dressage at Devon had a huge Breed Division and I started to look at it more seriously. I was hesitant at first to think that Clifford and I could even attempt Dressage at Devon, especially with the high caliber of horses that show in there. During this same time in spring, just as I am prepping for show season to really start up, I learned that after 2 years of ongoing treatment for reoccurring uveitis, our vet at New Bolton confirmed that Clifford had officially lost his vision in his right eye. There were many discussions, treatment decisions, lots of tears, and the talk of an eventual eye enucleation. While this news was initially difficult for me to process, I found this inner drive to push even harder to accomplish as many goals as we could on our “bucket list”. The reality of it was, and still is, what will be the longevity of Clifford’s show career and how he would adapt if (when?) he lost his eye. But I feel that as my partner, he is worth every opportunity I can give him and I wasn’t going to let this set back stand in our way. With this news, the dream to show in the Dixon Oval became clearer, and I made the decision to enter Clifford and I in this year’s Dressage at Devon Breed Division to compete in the Adult Amateur Handler class, as well as the Thoroughbred 12

Individual Breed class. This was going to be our big chance! The show day started off with an early 4 am wakeup call with pouring rain. Once at the show grounds, Clifford took everything in perfect stride as we got unloaded, his stall set, and things settled. The barn atmosphere at Devon was surprisingly laid back and quiet. Our first class, the Thoroughbred class, was set for 9:30 am in the Dixon Oval. The rain eased up before our class, so I took advantage and walked Clifford all around the rings to let him see horses warming up, the lights, flags, etc. He was so relaxed I was feeling hopeful that everything would be a walk in the park for him. Come show time, the rain was steadier and I tried to hold out as long as I could before the class start time to walk Clifford out from the barn and to the ring. We got a few practice jogs in right before it was our time. Clifford, who typically does not like the rain, walked and trotted around the triangle with me like a seasoned pro. Not one care in the world! Once we were done our “test,” we waited in the holding area for the rest of the horses in our class to go. That’s when the rain REALLY opened up! I couldn’t help but laugh with the other competitors while we waited out there in what felt like the longest 15 minutes of our lives. But, soaked to the bone, the results were in and we finished with a respectable 72.50% and placed 3rd. I was smiling from ear to ear and so proud of my boy! The Adult Amateur Handler class started at 8:30 pm (yes, at night). With the big gap in time, we had plenty of opportunity to browse the shops and watch the classes during the day. And luckily, by the time the Adult Amateur class was ready to go, the rain had stopped. This class was large with 15 horses entered. Clifford and I met up with our fellow ESDCTA friend and newsletter editor, Meredith Rogers, and her handsome horse, Leo. This class was held in the Wheeler (formally Gold) ring and I was a little apprehensive about the spooky shadows that were at the edges of the triangle, and which I was thinking would bother Clifford. We were the second horse in the ring and Clifford proved my worries wrong and worked around the triangle again with no issues. Once again, I was so proud of him!

As the rest of the horses competed, I watched and waited in the holding area. There were so many nice horses and more seasoned handlers competing, that I was not feeling confident about making it in the ribbons. The announcer started reading back some of the scores and I heard my number called as still in the top 6! There were two more horses to compete and I nervously watched and kept my fingers and toes crossed that we would make it. After again what seemed like the longest wait of our lives, the final scores were tallied and Clifford and I finished with a 73.4% for 6th! We got to go back in the ring with the other top 6 horses, including Meredith and Leo and have the ribbon ceremony. Walking back to the barns I cried happy tears. I am so proud of Clifford and myself and the partnership we have. And, while we are not riding high enough levels to compete in the performance division at Dressage at Devon, we did get to have our names on the Day Sheet and were in the ribbons for our classes. Time will tell how far of a Dressage future we have, but I know that if we continue to work hard and have dedication, our dreams can and will come true. I want to thank my husband, Josh Gale, for the never-ending support with every crazy idea, request, and adventure Clifford and I have. And, for being at every show sun or pouring rain (and Clifford thanks you for all the beautiful alfalfa you grow for him! LOL).

Horse Treats By Meredith Rogers
Ever wonder where certain horse terms come from? Here are some rather complicated explanations. The term “horse” is derived from the Old English (1100s) hors, which is related to the Proto-Indo-European (PIE; ~3700 BC) word kurs, which is the source of the Latin word, currere, “to run.” This replaced the original PIE root ekwo from which the Greek hippos and Latin equus are derived, both meaning “horse.” This dual etymology may be due to the reluctance of ancient cultures to utter the actual root or name of an animal held sacred in their religion. The word “Palomino,” which means “pale dove” in Spanish, is a Spanish surname, so someone with that name may have owned a horse with a golden body and white mane and tail. The fact that some Palominos look pale may have also contributed to the name being applied to this color horse. “Piebald” means “of two different colors” and came into use in 1589. It is formed from the word “pie,” for magpie, plus “bald” for spotted or white. Because magpies have black and white plumage, the word is reserved for animals with black and white patches, as opposed to spots of other colors. “Skewbald” refers to horses with brown and white patches. The root *skew comes from skued, but it is not clear where skued comes from; it may be from the Old French word “escu” meaning “shield” or it could be from the Middle English word “skew,” meaning “cloudy skies”. The word “saddle” comes from the prehistoric Germanic root *sathulaz, which also produced the German word sattel, the Dutch zadel, and the Swedish sadel. Its origins came from the Indo-European base *sed, meaning “sit”, from which English gets sit.

The Amateur Dilemma By, Meredith Rogers
Just the fact that we ride means that we’ve taken a chance, a chance to be great, a chance to fail, a chance to get hurt, a chance to learn, etc. With riding there are so many times we take a chance. We hope each time that it’s a calculated risk that will turn out in our favor. Sometimes they are big and other times small, but with each chance we take we never really know if we made the right or wrong decision until the future unfolds. Some of the bigger examples include buying a new horse. We have the excitement of the possibilities that lay ahead with the uncertainties if the match will work out. When we enter a show/event we imagine coming home with a ribbon but also know that a leaf blowing by could disrupt our plans. Even just buying a new pair of breeches has us anticipating our next ride in them but wondering if they will hold up in the wash (okay, this is a small one). This topic is very personal to me as I think about the purchase of my baby horse a year and a half ago. At the time, it made a lot of sense. Now, my situation has changed and if I knew then what I know now, I would not have bought him (don’t get me wrong, he’s fabulous). With that said, he’s exposed me to so much that I would never have experienced without him. I learned how to show in-hand; met new and wonderful people; have a better understanding of the training process, which is helping me with my older horse; experienced what overnight shows are all about; and got to live a dream by showing at Dressage at Devon (see mine and Erin’s stories about our experience in this issue). Although I am second-guessing myself, I am still looking forward to our future, whatever that may be. As we get older we may feel that our time to take chances is over, or at least much shorter, which means we put more weight into each decision. This can cause a lot of stress, a lot of regret, a lot of feeling like we are a failure if it doesn’t work out. Not true!!! Just by taking a chance we have achieved something that those who don’t take that chance lose out on. Even if it’s just the education that we don’t want to take that particular chance again. Lesson learned.

News from Outside the Ring Environmental Conservation in NJ
Finally, some good news for local land owners. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection recently denied Trasco/Williams their permit application, which would have advanced the construction of the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipeline project. The NESE project is a fracked gas pipeline that is slated to run from Raritan Bay in New Jersey to the Rockaways in Queens. Part of this project was the construction of a compressor station in Franklin, near Rt. 27 and Rt. 518. This is good news because the project would take land away from many farms, increase the risk of polluting the environment due to the potential for leakage, and lead to noise pollution from the compressor, with absolutely no benefits to those of us in its way. The fight is not over as this is just a delay, so if anyone would like to help, please contact the Steering Committee of the Franklin Township Task Force at www.scrap-NESE.org or email stopFTcompressor@yahoo.com.
Bug Invasion If you see this bug, kill it. This is the Spotted Lanternfly. It is spreading across our area at alarming speed. They hatch in the spring as wingless nymphs, and hop around to feed. They molt several times before becoming flying adults. They lay eggs in groups with plaster-like coverings in masses. Adults will continue to feed and lay eggs until a heavy frost kills them. The eggs remain over the winter to hatch in the spring. They eat the sap from plants and cause quite a bit of damage in the process. There is currently quarantine zones in NJ and Pennsylvania. To see if you are in one of these zones please check out: https://www.agriculture.pa.gov/Plants_Land_Water/PlantIndustry/Entomology/ spotted_lanternfly/quarantine/Pages/default.aspx if you are in Pennsylvania, and https://www.state.nj.us/agriculture/divisions/pi/prog/spottedlanternfly.html if you are in New Jersey . If you are outside one of these zones, please contact your local Department of Agriculture if you see these bugs. If you are in a zone, the powers that be know all about them and don’t need to be informed. Also, if you are in a zone, try not to transport them outside the area on your vehicles by examining your trucks and trailers for these pests.
USEF Rule Change Controversy
During the last session of the USEF Board of Directors, a new rule was approved that relates to riding freestyles. The qualifying score has been raised from 60% to 63%. The implications of this change are, arguably, exclusionary, as it makes it more difficult for those on average horses to qualify to compete.
What is, perhaps, more troubling is that this rule was passed without member input. This is not a trivial change, and should have been proposed to the members to allow us to voice our opinion about it. For those going to the USDF and/or USEF conventions, please be sure to speak up and be counted. 22
