Not only will you receive volunteer hours for year-end awards, but we feed you and provide gas money. It’s also great way to learn more about what you can do to help yourself when it’s your turn enter the ring. Plus, you’ll meet a whole new crew of horsey friends! President’s Message Hi! Ok, here comes November! We had a very successful New Jersey Horse Trials and Eventing Championships, a fantastic ESDCTA Dressage Championships, and a really fun and supportive USDF Region 1 Youth Team Competition in late September and early October. We have also hosted a 3 day clinic with Christine Stuckelberger the last weekend in October. (You can read about that next month). I can tell you that Christine is a very caring and lovely person who was strict about correctness of horse and rider basics, and helped improve both riders and horses, while always being supportive and encouraging. We have the Turkey Trot (hunter pace/trail ride) Sunday, November 18, at the Horse Park of New Jersey and co-sponsored by the Horse Park of New Jersey. This is always a lot of fun and a great way to get horses out and about for some destressing for them (and us) after competition season. If you have any ideas for clinics or events for next year, please let us know! Now is the time. We already have the Lilo Fore Symposium April 6 & 7, organized by Kem Barbosa and Willette Brown, the Judges’ Round Table in March, and a new dressage test fix-a-test clinic/review scheduled for the middle of March. The Year-End Awards luncheon is February 24, 2019 from 2:00 pm-6:00 pm at Copper Hill Country Club in Ringoes, NJ. Hope to see you there even if you didn’t win. It’s always a great time to connect with your horsey friends who you may not have seen since the summer show season. Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

If you’re reading this, you are probably a member of ESDCTA, but I’m sure you know of someone who rides dressage or events who is not a member. You know all about the wonderful things offered like educational programs, clinics with big name trainers, horse shows, year-end awards, and not least, that sense of being part of a community of likeminded people. The more members ESDCTA has, the better the programs we can offer. Our membership numbers are also important considerations when state and local governments decide on legislature that affects us (like open space), and we advocate for our sports (we’re working on better footing at the HPNJ). Region One Youth Team Competition By Jill Kuc
ESDCTA was proud to host the Region One Youth Team Competition at the Horse Park of New Jersey on Saturday, October 6. This was the first year that ESDCTA has hosted this event, but it was a huge success! Four teams of 3-4 youth each competed at levels from Intro through Second Level. ESDCTA sponsored two teams - a Training Level Team and a Mixed Level Team. The competition actually began on Friday night, with three of the teams taking part in a Team Horse Jeopardy Contest. The winning team, Pineland Riders, earned 5 points added to their team score for the Team Competition the following day. It turns out, they did not need the extra points to finish as the Champion Team. ESDCTA’s Training Level Team, comprised of Jessica Brindle-Clark on Sir Watson, Rylan Kresge on Starlight, Riley Schreiber on Spotlight Chic, and Brianna Warner on Pastel de Manzana, finished Fourth, just tenths of a point out of Third. Our Mixed Level Team, comprised of Barbara Brogan on Whispering Ash, Elizabeth Pepper on Blue Collar Man, and Devon Pomeroy on Mack the Knife finished in Second Place. The final team to round out the competition in Third Place was a team from LVDA. All of the kids and parents who were involved in this competition had tons of fun and made lasting friendships and memories even those whose rides did not go exactly as planned. Every single kid and parent was gracious in both winning and losing. The kids all went out of their way to thank show management, volunteers, their coaches, and parents. The parents, similarly, were very appreciative of all of the effort put in to making this fun weekend such a great success! ESDCTA is looking forward to hosting this event again next year and are hopeful to have many more teams and special events associated with it. A huge thank you to Dr. Lisa Toaldo for offering to run this show and for making it so awesome.

Behind the Scenes at a Horse Trial The Most Fun You Can Have Without a Horse By Marnie Stetson
How many volunteers does it take to run a United States Eventing Association (USEA) recognized horse trial? The answer is—A LOT. On Sunday, September 30, 162 competitors descended on the New Jersey Horse Park at Stone Tavern for a day of eventing. Competitors entered in divisions from Beginner Novice to Preliminary. It was a glorious, sunny day, a rarity this eventing season, and the good weather was reflected in the smiles of so many competitors’ faces. But, competitors weren’t the only ones smiling. Behind the scenes were dozens of cheerful, hard-working volunteers who were enjoying the sun and camaraderie of eventing, even though they were there without a horse. Running a horse trial takes a lot of people power. Carey Williams, who regularly coordinates cross-country volunteers at the Horse Park, worries every season that she won’t have enough people to help. Because you need volunteers for each of the 3 phases, it takes close to 50 volunteers to run a successful horse trial the size of the one held by ESDCTA on September 30. Volunteers are needed even before the competition begins. During the week leading up to the competition, the cross-country course has to be decorated. The day before the event all dressage rings and stadium courses are set. These activities alone took a dozen people much of the day Saturday. When asked about the importance of volunteers, Williams said, “Eventing can only happen with volunteers. I have known quite a few events on our area over the years that have had to cancel because they could not find enough help to pull it off. At the ESDCTA New Jersey Horse Trials we had a lot of great volunteers at the event. Some could only stay for the morning, but they were replaced with those who could Gary Maholic, Lisa Gabriel Brogan, not get there until afternoon. Pony Club Paula Lydzinski parents and kids also stepped up and ro(back to the camera) scoring tated through judging at different XC fences. Some fence judges were event riders themselves, others were ESDCTA members looking to fill volunteer hours for year-end awards or other activities. Overall it was a great day and even the Technical Delegate commented how smoothly everything ran

and how wonderful all the volunteers were! I just want to echo her statement and say I could not have run the XC phase without them!” On competition day, the cross-country volunteers arrived at the Park by 7:15 am to review the rules that govern whether or not a rider has successfully completed an obstacle on the course. They were also briefed on all the safety protocols. While the cross-country judges headed out to their assigned jumps, dozens of other volunteers made their way to the dressage rings or the stadium ring. Here, volunteers worked at the competition rings, the warm-up rings, scribed for dressage judges, carried out bit checks, and ran scores from the rings to the scoring booth. The office was staffed by the horse show secretary, Diane Engler, and more volunteers checked paper work, and collated final scores from the three disciplines. It can be a long day, and many of the volunteers are competitors themselves. For people who compete, or have a full-time job, or have their own farm to take care of, or who have families to take care of, it is not easy to give up so many hours on a weekend. And yet, volunteer help is essential to our sport. I was curious what made so many people show up to help. Overwhelmingly, the answer was, “for love of the sport.” I came nowhere near talking to every volunteer. After all, there were more than 50 people who contributed to making the horse trials happen. But those I talked to were adamant about how they felt compelled to give back to the sport of eventing. Interestingly, many of the volunteers made it a family affair.
Left to right: Tim Brogan, dressage warm up steward, Cathy Brogan, coordinator of dressage volunteers, Barbara Brogan, dressage ring volunteer One of the first families I ran into when talking with volunteers was the Brogans. Three generations of Brogans showed up at the Horse Park to help. Cathy Brogan, Regional Supervisor for the New Jersey Pony Club, spent both Saturday and Sunday at the venue getting ready for the show and organizing the many Pony Clubbers she had recruited to help. On Sunday, her son, Tim Brogan, worked the dressage warm-up 10

ring, while his wife Lisa Gabriel, worked in the scoring booth, and their daughter Barbara worked the dressage ring. Barbara was volunteering for this show, but one week later she was competing on an ESDCTA-sponsored team for the Region 1 Youth Team Dressage Competition, also held at the Horse Park. When asked why he was volunteering, Tim said, “It’s important to volunteer so we can keep these events running.”
Left to right: Kaci Wiater, XC jump judge, Tracey and Nikki Wiater, dressage ring stewards
The Wiaters were another family who showed up enforce. Mom, Tracey, and daughter Kaci, worked the dressage ring, while Kaci’s twin sister, Nikki, was a cross country judge. Nikki is an eventer, but wasn’t competing today. When I asked her why she gave up her free Sunday to volunteer, she didn’t miss a beat, “I volunteer to help other people do the sport I love.” There was lots of sun worshipping to be found on the cross-country course. Near preliminary fence 15 I found Emily Foreman with her daughter Emma and one of her students, Tai Parrish, brand new to the sport. Emma is a former eventer turned jumper, but the change in discipline hasn’t dampened her love of the sport. Like so many of her peers, Emma said, “I volunteer because I love the sport, and I want to help.” My last stop was at the stadium ring where I met Jen Morris. Jen has been an organizing secretary while also serving in many (many) other volunteer jobs over her decades of working at horse trials. She brought her husband Jeff to volunteer, and he isn’t even an equestrian! In response to my question why: “I like eventing and you can’t run the sport without volunteers!” Jen Morris, stadium ring steward
There were so many devoted volunteers. I was humbled by their passion and dedication, and left the Horse Park resolved to increase my own volunteer contribution next season. Will you join me? COLLECTIVE REMARKS

The Amateur Dilemma By, Meredith Rogers
Way back when, when I first started showing dressage, I volunteered solely because I had to for ESDCTA year-end awards. It was before the husband and dog, and the only responsibilities I had were to my job and one horse. It wasn’t that difficult to fit in volunteering at a show although it felt like it at the time. Each day I was scribing, ring stewarding, running, or scoring, was a day not riding. But, a funny thing happened… I found that I loved being apart of the show without the stress of showing. It may sound strange, but it made me feel important helping out. As a scribe, I was sitting next to THE JUDGE where every competitor saw me. Scribing also helped me so much in being able to fine tune my eye of what each level should and should not look like and why, which I’ve found invaluable in my own showing efforts. When I was ring stewarding, every competitor had to acknowledge me when I asked them their number and told them when they were up (even the big names who thought I should know who they were without asking). I was also “knower of all things related to the schedule,” and was constantly sought out by those wondering if we were running ahead or behind. Even running (bringing the score sheets from the judges to the office) and scoring (computing and entering scores into the computer) are critical for a well-run show. Just see how fast people line up to complain if their class isn’t pinned in a timely manner! These days I don’t volunteer at shows, and that’s primarily because I devote my volunteer hours to getting out this newsletter. And, now-a-days, I don’t volunteer for ESDCTA volunteer bucks because I don’t go for year-end awards. I volunteer because I feel it is important to give back to this sport that has given so much to me (and I enjoy seeing my name in print!). Please remember that every person involved in ESDCTA, from the shows to the Board of Directors, is a volunteer. We have lives outside of the club, so if we’re slow to respond, cut us some slack. If you don’t like how something is done, the only real way to change it is to get involved. Many hands make for light work, and we don’t have enough. You don’t need to devote a ton of time – an Look at all of the volunteers behind me hour a month to write an article; a day a year to help with a clinic (that you get to audit for free) – but if you have a lot time, we have a job for you too. I have found that when I volunteer, I get back way more than I give in the form of education, new friends, and that warm, fuzzy feeling that I’m doing some good. 14

Sharing What I Learned at the Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel Clinic By Paige Zimmerman
On September 21 and 22, I had the pleasure of participating in another clinic with the amazing Felicitas von Neumann-Cosel at Travelda Farm in Quakertown, PA. Every time I ride with her, I learn something new that I can carry with me until her next visit. Through her gentle guidance and encouragement, there were multiple light bulb moments that I’m happy to share here. •
“Lift” the inside shoulder and “move it” to the outside with a slight inside indirect rein to create flexion
•
Think of riding a haunches-in, but instead of bringing the haunches around, lift the shoulder out
•
Mobility of the shoulders is when the horse can shift from side-to-side and lighten each front foot fall corresponding to the appropriate shoulder; when the horse is moveable in the shoulder, he’s more relaxed at the base of his neck and take lighter steps in the front
•
In the canter, outside leg stays back and says “keep cantering” and the inside leg stays at the girth and says “bend”
• Downward transitions should feel like a plane landing; as with a plane landing, the horse should never dip down and/or put more weight on his shoulders •
Everything must be done (all aids must be given) in the rhythm of the horse’s movement with the proper timing
Lack of rhythm always causes tension
16
•
yourmagazine
COLLECTIVE REMARKS
•
In the trot, think of a slow, big medium trot, and to create height in the trot, think of a forward passage; the horse must not fall behind the leg when gaining height
Focus on creating subtle, tactful aids that get an immediate response
•
•
First encourage stretch in the neck into the contact; the horse must accept that first. Then lift the poll after you have the stretch and acceptance. Only then can he carry himself
You want a long, big, round neck not just a short, high one
•
Thank you, Felicitas, for your insight and guidance, as always. But I really need to thank my coach, Olivia Steidle, again for her support, encouragement, and in particular, a very special 16th birthday gift.

News from Outside the Ring The New Tests Are Here Every 4 years the USEF/USDF change the National tests. We finally just memorized what we needed to do as we went up centerline, and they go and change everything up on us. The new tests are effective December 1, 2018 through November 30, 2022. The notice from USEF can be found here: https://www.usef.org/media/press-releases/ us-equestrian-united-states-dressage?fbclid=IwAR2SpkOpB5n5ony6mjwBVF7ba4a_ iHIZqby2Sg-m3FrsxZR2HWorIzMxWrY, and the new tests can be found here: https://www.usdf.org/downloads/forms/2019.asp.
Good luck in the upcoming show season! Safe Sport Is Also Here If you are a USEF member you are now mandated to complete Safe Sport training annually. Safe Sport was developed by the US Center for Safe Sport (not USEF), and is required for ALL adult participants in any sport covered by the US Olympic & Paralympic Movements, including equestrian. The purpose is to reduce misconduct and abuse in sport. You will not be able to compete in any USEF sanctioned show/event if you do not complete the training. It can be found here: https://www.usef.org/compete/resources-forms/rules-regulations/safe-sport. The online training takes about an hour and a half and consists of videos and questions about the videos. After taking the class, a notice will be sent to USEF as long as you provide your USEF number. Please take this training seriously. You may not need it, but sexual and otherwise misconduct is a real problem even in our insular horsey world. In addition to numerous equine publications, the NY Times highlighted sexual misconduct in the equestrian community earlier this year: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/29/sports/jimmy-williams-flintridge.html. If this training helps even one person feel comfortable enough to come forward, it will be well worth it.
