We set out with a task to bring together a collection of vintage businesses across the South to let you gorgeous people know just what is available. There has been blood, sweat, and a few tears over finding the perfect pieces for your home, every little detail for your wedding, and several online boutiques to fill your wardrobe with clothes and accessories. We’ve wandered through Brighton and Bridport to report on the vintage and antique scene that is rocking around the place. We have met and spoken to some truly talented people. Some of whom take you back to a by gone era in such splendid style and with such ease showcasing their wonderfully true vintage and antique wares. Some have taken inspiration from vintage and have created products that are modern but with an old spin on them, executed with so much love and care. Restore not replace! I try to keep as much original upholstery in place as I can, repairing where possible. If the upholstery is not sound and needs removing I still try to re-use what I can, springs if not too out of shape, horsehair if you don’t mind cleaning it!!

Vintage Hair Lounge Vintage Hair Lounge was launched in 2010 by mother and daughter Gloria and Sharon Holloway. Gloria is a former Head of Hairdressing & Beauty at The Isle of Wight College and Sharon is a film and television Hair and Makeup Artist and award winning film-maker. The Southampton based pair specialise in professional vintage hair and makeup training throughout the UK, vintage events and photoshoots. They also regularly feature as media experts in vintage hair and makeup, including the recent BBC Wartime Farm television series. Their unique “pop-up” salons feature at vintage events across the UK, including the prestigious Goodwood Revival.

As you drive into the market town of Bridport on a Saturday morning there is a buzz in the air. I look to my right and see a poster for a missing ferret..brilliant only in Bridport!!!! Traders and the public are on the market bartering their beautiful wares to the sweet tunes of a busker and his dog. Bridport is one of the friendliest and uniquest little havens in Dorset. You can walk from stall to stall on the market and revel in gorgeous art deco jewellery, 70’s kitchenalia, vintage clothes and interior one offs that would rival the wares of Portabello road any day of the week. As you step away from the market on South Street and pop down Gundry Lane you are taken on another antique and vintage adventure. You will see Ray at The Loft Antiques, who has a collection of Buddhas’ that would rival any, they literally took my breath away. Pam’s secondhand shop houses some real blasts from the past with anything from natwest piggies to sunglasses from the 80’s.
Ruby In the Dust’s boutique shop is a must as Lorrie has created a perfect mixture of textiles, furniture and smalls that are crying out to be taken home with you. Cox’s corner next door is the oldest antique selling premises in Bridport. The two gentleman that run this have a mixture of antiques one side and retro, funky vintage on the other. As you step into the vintage quarter on the trading estate, you cannot fail to be drawn to The Alleyways. This antique and vintage emporium is not to be missed, with many traders under one roof displaying a beautiful mix of furniture, textiles, kitchenalia and collectables. Then pop around to Bridport Timber and see Peter, a lovely chap who will dazzle you with his extensive collection of Farrow and Ball wallpaper and paint. I urge all of you vintage peeps to take a weekend and get yourselves down to Bridport... It really is the biggest jewel in Dorsets vintage crown.

Styling on a recent photo shoot it actually snowed! Cue me standing on the sidelines with a fur coat to rescue models in between shots. How I long to pack up a vintage hamper, blanket in tow, and picnic in the glorious English sunshine and enjoy proper seasons with a fun vintage wardrobe to match. If you look at the main brands like Cartier, Rolex, Omega or the prestige brands like Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe their best sellers do not pander to fashion, they are design classics. Here are some examples from each of these brands starting with the Cartier Santos, this watch was originally designed by Louis Cartier in 1904, the white face roman numeral dial has since become a Cartier standard, the screws that originally held together the bezel and back of the watch were integrated into the design which was followed through on the bracelet, and has gone on to be copied many times by many people. This watch is still sold today and is still popular, in fact it was updated for its Centenary with the Santos 100. Onto Rolex and the Submariner this classically simple design with black dial and luminous hands, rotating black bezel, and oyster 3 link bracelet, all things that were right on the 1950s original, are still right for today’s discerning buyers. The look of this watch has not changed on the outside since its inception bar the addition of a winder protector and a date window, as for the insides they have improved with advancing watch technology. You do not need to spend that kind of money to get vintage classic you can start for as little as £400 for a 1960s steel Omega Seamaster, £700 buys you a 1970s Catier Le-Must Tank, or £900 can get you a 1950s to 1970s steel Rolex Oyster Precision. So you should consider owning a vintage classic, in the current climate it makes sound financial sense.

Dawn’s Vintage Do In 2011, I lost three stone, turned forty and left my job of eight years. However, winning the prestigious ‘Best Dressed’ at Goodwood Revival was the best thing to happen that year. For a vintage fanatic and hoarder of everything chintz, I cannot imagine a better title to be won. During my eight year career in media, I had also enjoyed being a singer with a local band but had seen it as no more than a hobby. After winning the title at Good wood Revival, I was asked to make an appearance at a friend’s nursing home to show my winning outfit and so I thought it would be fun to sing a few songs that matched my outfit, and quickly put a 50’s and 60’s ‘Dream coats and petticoats’ style set together. This booking turned into many more and as the word spread, I suddenly found myself in demand at parties, fairs and weddings.
My booking schedule became so full, that in 2012 I gave up my ‘day job’ as a freelance sales trainer to be a full time entertainer. I then had the opportunity to try out burlesque at a local pole fitness school Princess K and soon realised that this wonderful art could really enhance my act and so I jumped in with both feet and completed the intensive instructors training and thus launched Starlet Daze School of Burlesque. I run monthly workshops and of course host private parties and team building sessions and adore working with women to unleash their showgirl and embrace their feminine side. As Dawn’s Vintage Do, I mostly perform as a soloist with a full yet compact PA system and for larger events that require a full band, I have recruited a team of musicians who will perform with me as and when needed.

When you think of Brighton, what comes to mind? The pier? The beach? Or perhaps even that ABBA sang Waterloo at the Dome in the Eurovision Song contest? Well here at Chasing Vintage we think of a diverse and vibrant vintage scene. On the beautiful south coast, is Brighton. A popular tourist destination, famous for its funfair, pier and beach, it has a lot to offer for a short stay or even just a day trip. But there is more to Brighton than just being a sea side resort. The vintage shopping scene is thriving; in fact, it is pretty much impossible to turn a corner without finding another vintage haven. Take a wonder to Vine Street in North Laine where you will find Beyond Retro, a large warehouse-style store packed full of thousands garments, spanning the decades from the 1900s through to the 1990s. Also in North Laine, on Gloucester Road is Loot clothing with two floors of vintage men’s and women’s clothing and homewares, and Brighton Architectural Salvage. BAS offer high quality well designed fireplaces, stoves, flooring, furniture, garden, lighting, ironmongery and salvage.
To be worn again is the biggest vintage and second-hand clothing company in Brighton and Hove, with two stores in the North Laine offering men’s and women’s clothing. Head down to Upper St James’ Street in Kemptown to All Eras. Here you can browse through a number of vintage, retro and antique goodies. On the same road you’ll find Red Room Vintage which stocks an ever changing collection of ladies and gents vintage clothing, accessories, and homewares. A five minute drive away is Keep it Vintage on Church Road, Hove.
Round the corner is Dirty Harry, found on Sydney Street, a three-storey American-style vintage shop where you can pick yourself up a vintage bargain from the rail outside.

Loot clothing & accessories Once a one man band selling vintage clothing on a market stall, Colin Baldock launched Loot Clothing a diverse vintage shop in Brighton. Loot clothing opened on Gloucester Road 4 years ago, where Colin’s love for vintage clothing over the last 20 years has been transformed into a retro retreat. The store is two shops in one, selling retro items, and Trainer Spotter brand which was locally launched and is now worldwide.
Loot sells a mixture of vintage and reproduction vintage clothing from 50’s-60’s. Keeping it in the family Burdekin & Son Vintage Bikes Until the early 1980’s bikes would have remained in the family from one generation to the next. They were built to last and of simple design making them ideal for keeping on the road at a minimal cost. Like so many things, manufacturing costs in the UK became prohibitive and many companies moved production to the far east, compromising on quality. In 2002 Raleigh closed it’s doors on their Nottingham factory signalling the end of their British involvement in Bike manufacturing. At this time I was heavily involved in the restoration of the “Hot One” otherwise known as the Raleigh Chopper and was fortunate enough to visit the factory in it’s last year of production.....a real eye opener as the manufacturing process seemed to have seen little change since the 1940’s. Only a handful of specialist British companies survived, amongst them Brompton and Pashley who had stuck with it and focused on quality over quantity, which today has rewarded them with strong brand loyalty. The past decade has seen a strong revival in the ownership of retro/vintage bikes. They hit trend in London with students opting for a retro/cool look to complement the growing vintage fashion scene, showing that there remains nothing more iconic for us Brits, young or old, than a bicycle with a genuine leather Brooks saddle and a traditional wicker basket.

It was during these years that I got a call from my daughter Kelly Marie (A Harem of Peacocks.com). She was living in the city and studying at Central St Martins and had recognised that there was a opportunity to plug a gap in the market. As I live on the south coast there was an abundance of retired folk who wanted their beloved bikes to find a new home, rather than go to the tip, and so began “Burdekin & Son Vintage Bikes”. Our hobby has become a truly family run affair, saving and lovingly bringing back to life many a bike from a future on the scrap heap. We admire the simplicity, the workmanship and the reliability they offer, rewarding you with many years of comfy riding and on top of that an opportunity to preserve heritage and history.
