Maria costello We had a chat with motorcyclist legend, Maria Costello MBE, about her love for all things vintage, the upcoming Goodwood Revival following a very hectic year and her fantastic recent photo shoot.

Maria Costello So it’s a year since we met at Goodwood Revival 2012, and I hear you’ve had an eventful year. Tell us what you’ve been up to. After a thrilling 2012 season, my year ended on a low. The Revival usually falls at the end of my racing season but in 2012 I decided to do a short circuit meeting. Usually I only compete on real roads, after I was involved in an incident that resulted in my femur being broken. This is the biggest bone in your body and the operation to fix it took slightly longer than normal as old metal work from a previous break had to be removed first. Thankfully I had an amazing group of people, Scott Physio, Isle of Man Hyperbaric Chamber, Barry Goudriaan, Joe Power PT, Bespoke Injury Management and Premier Therapy who all helped and supported me through my recovery and I kicked off the 2013 season, as planned, with a 4th place finish. The highs have continued ever since and have included multiple top ten placings in the Irish Supertwin Championship on my very own Kawasaki ER6 and my best ever finish of 16th at the Isle of Man TT Races. I’ve got the TT Classic coming up too, just before I get to the Goodwood Revival, where I’ll be competing on three different post classic and classic bikes; the Team Classic Suzuki Harris F1, Bob Jackson Suzuki T20 and Peter Beugger’s gorgeous Paton. It’s going to be a busy event but one I am very much looking forward to. Then there is the Revival, a stand-out event that takes you back in time. For me, it’s a chance to get pampered and dressed up in vintage clothing supplied by Hand Picked Vintage and have my hair done in classic 1960’s styles by the wonderful team of Sharon and Gloria at the Vintage Hair Lounge. Then, I’ll step in to my black Gimoto leathers and race an original vintage bike from BMW. The photos of you and the Norton Bike are amazing, how did that come about? Working with the fabulous Vintage Hair Lounge and Hand Picked Vintage and being photographed by Scott Chalmers at the 2012 Revival was such a wonderful experience, it’s one that every woman should experience. I wanted to set-up a photo shoot and bring all these people together along with the Norton bike that I’d competed on to produce even more exquisite photographs, as with my hectic race schedule many of the vintage looks hadn’t been captured on film. A date was set and George Cohen provided the backdrop as well as the motorcycle and Katie, Sharon and Scott did the rest. I’m setting up a women riders association and I truly believe that this vintage experience would be one that many women, not just bikers, would want to have and I’m hoping to set it up as part of the events on offer. Having a Scott Chalmers photograph to take home as a memento of the day would be something I would cherish – they’re just amazing. Are you seeing more female colleagues progressing in racing now? I received fantastic news just today confirming that the ACU (my sports governing body) has agreed to support my candidature in to the Women in Motorcycling FIM Commission. This will be a great
www.chasingvintage.co.uk
09
honour, to represent the ACU/Great Britain as the Commission’s road race candidate and to help, support, nurture and be a contact for other females in road racing or considering road racing. I will also be able to provide knowledge and information for them to further their careers. I believe I already stand as a role model in this sport and having this position would be a great way for me to give something back to the sport and really help other women thrive in this male dominated sport. You’re back for Goodwood Revival 2013, what can we expect to see from Maria Costello this year? My form is good and I’m very excited to announce that I will be part of the first ever all women race team to compete in the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy races at the Revival. I am teaming up with Fabienne SeverineHoffman on a very special bike, a 498cc BMW RS 500 from 1956, a real works racer that was raced in the GP class in the World Championship. Walter Zeller finished second on it to John Surtees on a MV Agusta. This BMW has a similar dohc engine to the RS 54, but it has a shorter stroke and 5-speed gearbox. Only three were made and we’ll be competing on this very bike. Aside from the racing, what do you feel makes Goodwood Revival such a unique event? It’s the attention to detail that takes you to an era when men were men and raced raw, thrilling and noisy motorcycles and women wore amazing clothes and had beautiful hair styles and I get to do both. Spectators get to be part of the amazing atmosphere by dressing in period costume and they can have their hair done to match their outfits too, with the Vintage Hair Lounge on site. Then there’s the jiving, champagne and vintage planes flying above our heads and it just goes on. You have to come and experience it. And will we be seeing you again at Vintage Hair Lounge “Over the Road”? I wouldn’t miss this opportunity for anything. What’s a tea dress or a WAAF uniform without Victory curls? The Vintage Hair Lounge completes my look and after wearing a helmet there is nothing better than letting the professionals produce some amazing hairstyles from my helmet hair. Whilst I get the Vintage Hair Lounge treatment, I get to watch them put smiles on every other woman who books in for a vintage hair ‘do’. It’s a must for all women who want the authentic look. And after Goodwood Revival, what’s next for Maria Costello? I think I’ll deserve a holiday!

Over The Bridge
I started my mini break in the gorgeous boutique town of Cowbridge where I spent a very relaxed night in The Bear Hotel and, after a hearty breakfast began to explore. The town is full of independent shops, I counted over 60, some of which go back generations. Adam Jones Antiques & Furniture Restorer situated in the Old Wool Barn started off my shopping experience, with his vast knowledge and array of finds it was a pleasure to find him. Right next door was the Cycle shop, going for over 30 years its a must for lovers of Vintage Pashleys, they
over the bridge
even had a tandem…oh I wish I hadn’t come in the car! Back through the old archway and onto the High St, I found Cowbridge Antiques ( the stone planters outside drew me in), Havard & Havard, who has the most luxurious array of Welsh furnishings and Capel Jones, a hidden gem, tucked around a corner but decorated beautifully and full of retro finds at prices that I couldn’t say no to. Happy Days Vintage Homestore, which completed the Cowbridge scene served me a lovely cup of tea and a huge slice of homemade cake. From the outside it looks small, but inside it’s huge. There is everything you could want in there – I picked up a pretty dress and some Converse, although I could have bought half the shop. My day continued to get better and better as I was told by Sarah ( the owner of Happy Days) that Cardiff – only 15 minutes from Cowbridge, had lots of Vintage shops too! Hubbards

South wales is catching up quickly on the vintage scene, shops are popping up all over and with so much variety why not make a weekend of it?
Cupboard was her first recommendation, as Sophie the owner, started off in Cowbridge. It didn’t disappoint, a pretty little shop, full of handmade and vintage loveliness. The girls specialise in Vintage Weddings, if they haven’t got it, they can make it...I was in my element.
WE BUY AND PART EXCHANGE UNWANTED WATCHES
I-cladius and Hobo continued on the clothing front as did the CFQ, a large vintage emporium opposite the castle. I could have easily have gone home with a whole new vintage wardrobe. I thoroughly enjoyed going up and down the arcades where lots of individual quirky shops offer handmade and vintage. The whole place felt very welcoming, especially the little stalls in the market, I felt like I’d been taken back in time, and I loved it. Jacobs market – a huge place by the train station had me enthralled for hours, as did the Pumping Station on Penarth rd, both of which really needed a whole afternoon to themselves, but I’ll save that for next time, as there will definitely be a next time.

Being a stylist is a fabulous job because it is constantly changing and demanding and therefore very exciting. It is not just a 9-5 job to me, it is much more fulfilling. Styling is not simply limited to working with clothes in shops. You get to meet a wide variety of interesting people, and personal styling is all about interacting and forging a connection with your clients. For my personal shopping services, I initially begin with a one-to-one consultation, then discover the client’s likes and dislikes, eventually helping them to put together a new wardrobe and go on a shopping trip to introduce them to new styles and colours. The great thing about working independently from the big department stores is that there is no obligation to buy. I simply source and suggest and it’s up to the client whether they buy or not. International travel is one of the perks of the job, such as being whisked off to Paris and Milan for shopping trips with clients. I am also involved with magazine and radio work. Going to New York and London Fashion Weeks to see the shows is another highlight, never mind rubbing shoulders with the likes of Eva Longoria and Justin Timberlake. Fashion is something I love to do, so being paid for it is just heaven. My personal styling business has a bit of a twist as well, as I have an additional tailoring business, Dandylion Style, making oneoff suits and bespoke waistcoats. It lends me an unique sense into the cut and quality of clothing, making sure I steer clients to clothes that will stay in style and last for a long time, saving them time and money.

rhubarb, rosewater and ginger trifle
Vintage Dining
Maria Elia treats us to a quick and easy trifle. Layers of soft spiced Jamaican ginger cake, sweetened with rhubarb, delicately topped with rose scented cream.
Serves 4 Ingredients: 150g caster sugar 8 sticks rhubarb, trimmed and peeled, chopped into 2cm pieces 2 tbsp Grand Marnier, (optional) 250g mascarpone 120g Greek yogurt 4 tsp rose water 50g icing sugar 1/2 Jamaican ginger cakes, sliced into 12 pieces 10g flaked almonds, toasted 2 pieces preserved stem ginger, finely chopped
Method:
Words by : Maria Elia Photos : Jenny Zarins and Jonathan Gregson
Gently heat the 400ml of water and sugar together in a medium saucepan until the sugar has dissolved. Add the rhubarb and cook over a medium heat for approximately 8 minutes, or until the rhubarb has softened. Strain the mixture, reserve the cooking liquor and set aside to cool. Stir the Grand Marnier into the cooking liquor, if using. Whisk the mascarpone, Greek yogurt, rosewater and icing sugar together in a bowl until thickened. Set aside. Place a slice of ginger cake in the bottom of four wine glasses or tumblers, and drizzle each with enough cooking liquor to moisten the sponge without drenching it. Place a spoonful of the cooled rhubarb on top of the cake and repeat, layering in this way until you have used all the cake and rhubarb up. Top with the mascarpone mixture and refrigerate for up to an hour. Sprinkle with almonds, stem ginger and serve. bridport As you approach Bridport for the first time you could be mistaken for thinking it was an ordinary town. The outskirts don’t give any clues as to what lies ahead, but then you see a sign that says “Vintage Quarter” and you start to realise that this is a very special place indeed.

Bridport
Radiating out from St. Michael’s Trading Estate, the Art & Vintage Quarter is home to workshops, studios and an array of emporia, only a stone’s throw from one another, offering everything from vintage clothes to antique furniture, plus just about everything in between. The setting is also truly vintage, dominated by the beautiful red brick buildings where local craftsmen once produced the rope and fishing nets for which the town became famous. As you explore, you are sure to come across Cox’s Corner. In this long-established emporium you’ll witness a duel between classic antiques and super-cool vintage finds, battling it out for a place in our affections and our homes. It’s no good betting on one side or the other though; by the time you leave, you’ll be convinced that the two were made to live together.
You could easily lose yourself for hours in The Alleyways, where over 35 traders have got together to offer a wealth of antique and vintage items under one roof. Giving the impression of a series of “rooms”, you’ll find furniture, mirrors and a whole host of other period accessories to beautify your life. The last Sunday of each month is Antique & Vintage Sunday in the Art & Vintage Quarter, when you can expect to find Bridport’s love of days-gone-by spilling out onto the streets and old rope walks, and where the usual vintage buzz is accompanied by live music. If you’ve not visited Bridport before, this is the time to do so. Bridport is certainly no ordinary town.

DIARY OF A VINTAGE STYLIST
www.chasingvintage.co.uk
Nicki Grainger from What Alice Found talks winter weddings with a vintage feel. Summer is so often the season jam packed with weddings, with the late night light and (hopefully) glorious weather to shine down on your big day, but how about if your date is set for the wintery months? Luckily every season has some beautiful qualities to loan to such a special occasion when it comes to colours, themes and styling. Brides can experiment with lavish fabrics and accessorise with wintery aspects like feathers, faux fur capes and perhaps darker make up that would look too heavy in summer months. Think rouge or 1920s maroon lips, defined eyes and jewelled hair pieces. Another great addition for a bride is a vintage hooded cape, in velvet or silk, very striking and unique for a wintery wedding. Grooms can indulge in Victorian top hats, antique pocket watches and wintery plants or flower buttonholes. Winter light is also gorgeous for photos, a low sun and hazy light creates stunning shadows and very atmospheric imagery. Perhaps consider some fun vintage props for your photo and for use at the reception? Regal scarves, old spectacles, eccentric animal statues or old phones. Winter colours themes can range from deep warm colours like greens, red, burnt orange and dark blues – right up to the bright silvery white tones associated with icy winter wonderlands and Christmas lights. What if it rains? Have on hand a collection of funky coloured vintage umbrellas to keep guests dry and still keep any snapshots looking vintage styled and fun. What if it snows? How about a suitcase on hand bursting with faux fur collars, hats, stoles and coats to get into the theme of the day!? As for décor, winter weddings look divine with lots of warm bulb lights and multiple candles to counter act any dark cloudy days. Bare branches and twinkly accessories on tables are a great contrast, and to keep things vintage, try using saved pages of old damaged books for place names, menus and maybe even confetti. What’s nicer than having the words of great stories of days gone by thrown over you to start your new married life, after all?

Vintage Hair
On the brink of another spectacular Goodwood Revival (13–15 September) we find out how Vintage Hair Lounge has developed a UK team of exceptional vintage stylists. Vintage Hair Lounge is fast becoming the leading provider of vintage hairstyling training in the UK, a factor which has fuelled the ability of the Southampton based business to feature at a host of vintage events, with none more prestigious than Goodwood Revival. The founders, mother and daughter Gloria and Sharon Holloway, have between them spent decades in the hairdressing industry, combining experience and skills while building their impressive film and television portfolio. Their unique Vintage Hairstyling For Camera course has been delivered in numerous venues, including the BskyB Hair and Makeup team and leading hair and beauty suppliers Aston and Finche. “When we were developing the course we thought about who would most likely benefit from learning these skills to develop their careers and businesses,” explains Sharon. “We were aware that as the vintage revival continued, the demand for this skill from the public would increase, but the knowledge to meet the demand remained in more mature hairdressers who had been originally trained in traditional techniques and the film and television industry where period and vintage work continues to regularly feature. The modern salon industry has developed a generation or two of hairdressers who have missed out on traditional skills, so they lack the ability to make the most of these new opportunities that the vintage revival has brought. We fill that gap, and train large numbers of salon stylists and freelance stylists, as well as a host of others keen to learn new skills.” The two day course gives students a solid grounding in the history of hairdressing and the social context in which is has developed. “I’m amazed at how little historical knowledge hairdressers have,” adds Gloria. “To be part of such a creative industry which is always changing, that awareness of history is vital, it’s where so much inspiration for modern work comes from. Hairdressers were once held in very high esteem, it’s about time the industry reclaimed that reputation.”
photographers show the versatility of the students once they have mastered key skills. Photographers Scott Chalmers, Karla Gowlett and Rachel Spivey work with the students to help their understanding of shape and balance of hairstyles for photographic work. Working on live models during the course gives students credible evidence of their new skills. Working with leading airbrush makeup company Airbase has shown Sharon the ever increasing opportunity for quality makeup training that appeals to those who have not trained specifically in film and television makeup. “The makeup course will be similar to our current “for camera” hair course. Photographic work is booming, but no matter how talented the photographer, makeup artists still need to understand lighting, and techniques that will best create authentic looks whilst standing up to the scrutiny of high definition. We shouldn’t become reliant on the photographer’s photoshop skills, we should ensure the standard of work is high on its own merits. Imagining every client is about to feature on the front cover of a magazine is a pretty good discipline to have in this field.” Vintage Hair Lounge has spent the past year working on a theme for their salon at Goodwood Revival this year, which is 1930s holidays. The popularity of the film The Great Gatsby has encouraged people to look to the 1920s and 1930s for inspiration and the period showcases a pioneering drive in a whole host of industries. It is, Gloria and Sharon explain, the era of possibilities. The hope and optimism that the period exudes is perhaps a much needed sentiment of joy in such tough time. Whilst the team at Vintage Hair Lounge are renowned for using some of the very best hair and makeup products available, the service being delivered is unmistakably old-fashioned. “If vintage is to mean anything,” says Gloria, “It should be about values as well as fashions. Creating a fun environment in the salon is as important as delivering fantastic hair and makeup. By bringing together so many of our brilliant team for one event makes for unique atmosphere. And it’s also the moment when Sharon and I can be so proud to see how the way we trained them has made all the difference.”

Bournemouth
The best event of the Summer took place on a particularly rosy day at one of the largest Vintage Emporiums in the South. Molly’s Den hosted a fair for everyone over two days and you vintage lovers certainly made the most of this free occasion, the place was brilliantly busy. With stalls, bbq, kids activities as well as vintage cars, the occasion was made by some fantastic music. The Polka Dot Dolls performed perfectly for the crowd singing some classics in delightfully rich harmonies. Tallulah, Dixie Mustang and Scarlet De’Havilland make up the group and they always look the part in gorgeous matching vintage attire and perfectly coiffed curls. The crowd couldn’t get enough of the trio who’s toe tapping swing numbers really had everyone dancing along. Bringing glamour and style to the event, the Polka Dot dolls travelled from London to put on this
spectacular show and it was a fantastic addition to the day. While the gorgeous girls sang away, the hustle and bustle of the fair continued and the public could browse along the eclectic stalls selling some lovely vintage items at bargain prices. While the tasty smell of the barbeque drifted over the space, kids ran, laughing to the bouncy castle. People admired beautiful classic VWs while enjoying delicious ice cream and everybody was singing along to the music. As the sun shined down on the Den, and colourful bunting fluttered in a gentle breeze, it seemed the perfect summer day. If you missed the fair, don’t feel too disappointed.
