A Message from the President and the Chair of the Board of Trustees
I
Esther L. Barazzone, Ph.D. President
t is our honor, on behalf of the Board of Trustees and the Chatham University community – students, faculty and staff – to thank you for your contributions in the 2008-2009 fiscal year. Once again, the support of Chatham alumnae, graduate alumni, and friends has ensured that Chatham can provide a challenging, empowering and intellectually ambitious environment. Because of your financial investment in this University, we have increased and improved student housing, provided tablet computers for all of our undergraduates and hired additional faculty, who continue to demonstrate their excellence. Dr. Nancy Gift, Interim Director of the Rachel Carson Institute and assistant professor of environmental studies, authored the book A Weed By Any Other Name: The Virtues of a Messy Lawn, or Learning to Love the Plants We Don’t Plant, which was featured in The New York Times Summer Reading List. Dr. Lynne Bruckner, a Shakespearean scholar, and theatre professor Kerri LaCharite worked with Chatham students to plant an organic garden at the Eden Hall Campus; their work was documented on KDKA television. These achievements and other complementary efforts gained the respect of the highly-esteemed Princeton Review, which rated Chatham one of the “Best in the Northeast Universities” as well as U.S. News & World Report, which deemed Chatham as a Tier One Master’s University. Many of our accomplishments this year have come from anticipating trends in education and devising ways to integrate these trends into the development of Chatham – such as the University’s ongoing commitment to green initiatives. It is our vision that the Eden Hall Campus will be an entirely green academic community through the establishment of the School for Sustainability and the Environment. We have unveiled Chatham Eastside, a LEED-certified 250,000 squarefoot facility less than a mile from Woodland Road, which houses our graduate health science and design programs. Additionally, we have added “green” bio-diesel shuttles to provide students, faculty and staff with greater access to the new Eastside facility and Oakland.
S. Murray Rust III Chair, Board of Trustees
Yet, while Chatham has been able to continue ardently striving towards its goals, we cannot ignore the current economic climate and its impact on Chatham students. We have been inundated with requests for additional financial support from students who will be unable to continue at Chatham without it. Chatham committed $7.6 million in aid to students for the 2008-09 academic year and an estimated $8.6 million for 2009-10. A significant portion of this aid traditionally comes from Chatham’s Annual Fund and because of this, we have designated the entire Annual Fund to student aid for 2009-10 as we did in 2008-09. Even during these difficult times, Chatham alumni and friends have shown their loyalty and philanthropy in so many ways. Although the Annual Fund did not surpass its goal, the $1,044,000 raised was evidence of the generosity of our donors. Several new endowed scholarships were established last year, including the Anne Putnam Mallinson Scholarship, created in Anne’s memory by her husband Bill. Chatham was privileged to host an exhibition by world-renowned printmaker Naoko Matsubara, the inaugural Mary Pope Cheney Visiting Artist, funded by The Fine Foundation and Katherine Cheney Chappell ’67 & Tom Chappell. And a grant from the IFSA Foundation afforded several students the opportunity to study abroad—an integral aspect of Chatham’s commitment to international education. Your giving made all this and more possible. It is a testament to your confidence in Chatham and an investment in the institution and guarantees that future generations can experience the academic excellence and extraordinary learning community that Chatham offers. There is no substitute for a generous and appreciative community of alumni and friends. We could not sustain excellence without your steadfast commitment. Our thanks,
Esther L. Barazzone, Ph.D., President

A Message from the Co-chairs of the Annual Fund Leadership Committee
W
e would like to extend our deepest appreciation to each member of the Chatham community – alumnae, graduate alumni, parents, friends and neighbors, faculty, staff, students and our institutional contributors – for your support of the 2008-2009 Annual Fund. In a year marked by economic uncertainty, Chatham University saw continued growth and success, including the opening of Chatham Eastside, and the Eden Hall Campus continued development into a demonstration site for sustainable living.
Lynette D. Charity ’79 AFLC Co-chair
This past year nearly 2,000 members of the Chatham community contributed a total of $1,044,00 in unrestricted support to the University. While this total fell short of the fiscal year goal, every penny raised was able to be committed to providing critical aid for current students facing financial hurdles as they pursue their degrees. Gifts of all levels were directed to student aid and we are honored to provide special recognition to donors in Chatham’s various giving societies for their generous support. Membership in The 1869 Society, Chatham’s premier giving society that recognizes donors who give $1,000 or more, totaled 214 members, comprised of 14 new and 200 renewing members. The Beatty Council, which recognizes donors of $500-$999, reached 113 members, and The Purple Ribbon Society, recognizing graduates of the last decade who gave $100 or more, increased their membership to 47 members. In addition, alumni graduates of the University’s graduate programs increased their participation by over 150% last year. The University’s Phonathon program also saw unprecedented growth last year with over $240,000 in gifts and pledges raised by the talented student callers. The Class of 2009 rose to the challenge and raised a total of $2,229 in gifts and pledges for the Annual Fund from 21% of the graduating class. This impressive amount was generously matched by Barbara Stern Heffer, Chatham University Trustee and 1968 graduate, for a grand total of $4,458.
Christine Hall McCLure ’73 AFLC Co-chair
We truly appreciate your contributions and salute you for your outstanding support which has continued to strengthen Chatham University. Your gifts are a very special vote of confidence for the work being done at Chatham. Gifts of all sizes to the Annual Fund are especially significant because they directly impact current students through financial aid and help to keep the University’s endowment intact. As we strive to reach $1.2 million and 34% alumnae participation in 20092010, we are counting on you to participate, and if possible, to increase your gift to help us to meet these crucial goals. Sincerely,
Lynette D. Charity ’74, M.D.

Experiential Learning Awards: Jessica Moran ’09 after speaking with the farmers and viewing their plots “This past summer I was accepted to do a 3 month internship through the Foundation for Sustainable Development. Through this program I was placed with a non-profit organization called Rural Agro Processors and Training Association (RAPTA) in Iganga, Uganda. RAPTA is a 907 member organization, which serves rural farmers within the surrounding counties to provide training, seed, and tools. Many of the farmers I visited had formed their own community organizations as a way to represent their county or region to RAPTA. Through some of the interviews given to the locals, the women farmers addressed concerns regarding their lack of ownership as women in farming and organization decisions. In the end, we facilitated a training workshop for the leaders of each organization on how to improve management skills and gender mainstreaming within their organizations. The training proved to be successful based on high attendance and survey feedback.” —Jessica Moran ’09, Experiential Learning Award Recipient

My favorite part of phonathon is talking to the alumnae that genuinely love Chatham and share lots of memories. 2008-2009 Donor Report
Ways to Give There are many ways to make a gift and depending on the asset given and the gift arrangement selected, a donor can generally expect to obtain some or all of the following benefits: n Fulfill philanthropic goals n Reduce income tax n Avoid capital-gains tax on gifts of long-term appreciated property n Retain a stream of payments for life for the donor and/or other beneficiaries (in the case of a gift annuity) n Increase spendable income n Possibly eliminate a portion of your federal estate tax
Outright Gifts Outright gifts are immediate contributions to the University and often include cash, securities and real estate. 1. Cash Gifts: A gift of cash is available for immediate use by the University. Please send a check or money order payable to Chatham University to: Chatham University, Office of University Advancement, Beatty House, Woodland Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15232. 2. Credit card gifts: One of the easiest and most flexible ways to make a gift to the University is with a credit card. Chatham University accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. You can make an online gift through our secure online gift form. Or, if you prefer, print our credit card form and fax it to 412-365-1610. You may also call our toll free and confidential GiftLine at 1-866-PCW-CHAT to make a credit card gift. Please be sure to identify the project or program to benefit from your gift. 3. Pledge your support: Pledges to the Annual Fund are due by June 30th of the current fiscal year. Pledge periods for capital and special projects vary. 4. Marketable securities: Gifts of appreciated long-term securities, including stocks, bonds and mutual fund shares, may generate very favorable tax benefits for the donor. At the time the gift is made, the donor may receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of such securities if owned for more than 12 months. To make a gift of securities, please use one of the three methods listed below or contact Gary A. McKillop, director of advancement information systems, at 412-365-2731.
Electronic Transfer The easiest method of transferring securities electronically is via DTC (Depository Trust Company) into Chatham University’s account with Parker Hunter. n Please instruct your broker/agent to transfer securities to: Parker/Hunter DTC # 0493 Account # 2014-7404 FBO Chatham University Attention: Cindy Pastin 412-562-7935 n Instruct your broker/agent to send a letter to the Office of University Advancement (address below) confirming the transfer, indicating the your name and address, security description, quantity, purpose or designation of gift.
Transfer of Physically Held Securities
5. Gifts of Tangible Personal Property/In Kind Gifts: Gifts-in-kind are non-cash gifts of tangible property. Visit http://alum.chatham.edu/giving/annual.cfm and enter your company into their search engine to see if you can double or triple the impact of your contribution to Chatham University. And, as a donor, you will be recognized for the total amount of the gift. Once you’ve verified that your company will match your gift, please check with your Human Resources office to obtain a matching gift form, fill out the top portion, and mail it to Chatham University along with your gift. We will then verify receipt of your gift and send it to your company for processing. If you need any additional help, please call Gary McKillop at 412-365-2731 or send an e-mail request to matchinggifts@ chatham.edu. We encourage you to take advantage of this great employee benefit.
