Top 10 silly cop calls of ‘18 The Chatham-Kent Police Service tries to educate citizens about the importance of calling police when they observe crimes, suspicious activities, or have concerns that may be criminal in nature. On occasion, people call police in situations that don’t quite fit into these categories. The police service has documented its top 10 list of strange or silly calls of 2018. 10. A man went into his garage and noticed that his gun locker had been pried open and several long guns missing. After calling police, the victim noticed a man walking away from his house… wearing the victim’s coat. The caller hopped in his car and drove towards the thief, who actually flagged him down to ask for a ride! Police arrived, arrested the thief and recovered the firearms and the victim’s coat. 9. We all want to be good neighbours and help those in need. But what about at 1 a.m.? A caller advised police

that a stranger came to his door at 1 a.m. The stranger explained he was out for a walk, and asked if he could use the man’s microwave to heat up the food he was carrying. 8. A man who has had several dealings with police attended the courthouse. Because of his frequency, it can be assumed he was familiar with the routine and well aware of the security screening at the front door. Too bad he forgot to check his backpack before officers did. Inside were cheques stolen during a recent commercial break and enter. The man advised he was “carrying them for a friend.” 7. Police were called to a gas station regarding a man who had pumped gas, but didn’t have any money to pay. The man was kind enough to wait with the store clerk until police arrived – which was odd considering the man was driving a stolen vehicle from London. Perhaps the man wanted to ensure the vehicle was returned to the owner with a full tank. Continued on back page

Eddie Miller dies at age 105 Blenheim loses a legend

The Chatham Voice

A beloved and longtime Blenheim resident, Ed Miller died at the age of 105 two days before Christmas. Miller, believed to one of the oldest living Second World War veterans, was featured just this fall in a story in The Chatham Voice regarding his 105th birthday and experiences during the war as an airframe mechanic. According to his obituary, Miller passed away at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance after a brief decline in health. His death came just two days short of what would have been the 42nd anniversary of the wedding to his second wife, Helen, on Christmas Day, 1976.

Miller served during the war as an airframe mechanic stationed in England, maintaining the Lancaster bombers that flew over Germany. “Many people used to ask Ed what might be the secret of his long life. He gave various answers, some serious, some flip. Those who know him best share the consensus that his longevity was the result of the combination of his irrepressible friendliness with everyone he met, and his positive outlook on life. He didn’t complain; he didn’t dwell on his losses, and he had more losses in his life than many of us ever face in a shorter life; he looked for the good in people; he was thoughtful and kind,

though seldom overtly emotive,” Miller’s obituary read. Miller was known as a gregarious and helpful person to his family, friends and neighbours. He seldom if ever engaged in gossip, preferring to find the best and say the best about everyone. He was known for his visiting of the lonely. He spent many volunteer hours helping out with Cedar Springs United Church, Camp Kenesserie, Craford Cemetery and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 185. Miller was a carpenter, both on his own and as a long-time employee at the Southwest Regional Centre. Miller was the son of

Book examines C-K’s rich history

By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

Local historians and authors Jim and Lisa Gilbert weave together stories with words, so it seems only fitting that the title of their latest book is “A Chatham-Kent Tapestry.” Even though “Chatham-Kent” is in the title, this book’s focus predates amalgamation by decades, even centuries. It examines the history of our area, largely with photographs, up to 1950. “We just find that it’s important for people in Chatham-Kent to understand where they came from and just how exciting, interesting and dynamic our local history is,” Jim Gilbert said. He added a view of the past offers guidance into the future. “If they have an appreciation of their past, I think they feel better about themselves and their community,” he said of local residents. “It ends up being better for the future for everybody.” Gilbert said he and his wife opted to let the pictures tell most of the tale for a reason. “People have a shorter attention span. They won’t sit down and read a lot of stuff to get a tidbit of information,” he explained. “They want pictures. If you can provide a picture that captures their attention and provide some information with it, they will have a better understanding of Chatham-Kent.”

LAW CLERK

This is the fifth book that the Gilberts, either together or separately, have had published. “We have a passion for local people and places. We find it very interesting,” Gilbert said. Gilbert said as they gathered information for the book, he and his wife gained new knowledge. “We’ve been here all our lives. Doing this book, we found out so many things we didn’t know,” he said. “We never said we are THE local experts on local history. We are excited to find out new things.” The Gilberts spent time in each community within Chatham-Kent conducting research and speaking with local community experts. “It really allowed us to find out more about our communities that we didn’t know,” he said. What you won’t read in “A Chatham-Kent Tapestry” are the big news items, events that everyone has already heard about from other sources. “We focused on the small facts that are ‘ah-hah” moments. We were trying to flesh out Chatham-Kent’s personality. There is a lot of history that we didn’t know, and a lot of wonderful people.” Gilbert said the book should provide new insight into the evolution of our municipality and the success stories that have come from it. “I feel people of C-K put them-

selves down too much. We tend to criticize ourselves too much,” he said. “There are things people have done in our community; things that have happened; people born and raised here who went on to do bigger and better things.” People living here seem to forget just how big our municipality is geographically. “Chatham-Kent is the size of a small European country. Trying to get your head around its history is not an easy thing to do,” Gilbert said. He said knowing your local history opens the door to comprehending global history. “If you understand what went on in your own community, you have a greater respect for understanding

world history,” he said. “Everybody’s world history is also somebody’s local history.”

Chatham-Kent Victims Services executive director Pam Fusillo accepts a cheque from Chatham-Kent Police Services Board for $45,000 to help in the group’s mandate to provide emotional support, practical assistance, information and referrals to victims of crime. Mayor Darrin Canniff, left, made the presentation on behalf of the board chair to Fusillo and CKVS board member Don MacLellan. Police Chief Gary Conn said the donation is part of the CKPS mandate to provide support for victims, and top up funding from the province which doesn’t cover all the needs of the group.

Welcome to 2019 It’s a new year now, and we offer advice to folks, as some may have already broken their New Year’s Resolutions. For starters, don’t make resolutions, especially impossible-to-keep drastic life changers. Make realistic pledges to improve your life and the lives of others around you. To our new municipal council, we urge them to pledge to put the people of Chatham-Kent first in all their decision-making. This is no simple pledge. It could mean council goes against the wishes of administration, choosing a route to pursue that benefits the ratepayers rather than the civil servants that feed council its steady diet of reports and what they wish council to do. But it could also mean making a difficult decision that will be unpopular with the ratepayers now, but beneficial in the long run. At budget time, which is fast approaching, that could mean dealing with an issue now rather than pushing the problem onto the next generation. This will be your first budget. You have three more before the voters return to the polls to truly judge how you have served them. Start off on a strong foot. To the people of Chatham-Kent in general, we ask that you adopt the credo to Buy Local, Shop Local. Yes, they are your hard-earned dollars and you have every right to spend them how you please, but consider the impact you can have on your local economy. Every dollar spent here in Chatham-Kent has a real impact on our economy. That could mean additional jobs, or it could help a local business survive and ultimately thrive. All of that contributes to our tax base, and the healthier that is, the better it is for everyone. Spending money in Windsor, London, or across the border does nothing to help Chatham-Kent’s economy. There is nothing wrong with a fun shopping trip out of town, especially to find items you just can’t buy here, but think about it for a second. If you are purchasing everyday items out of town ostensibly to save a few bucks, if that cash was spent here, perhaps the shops could expand inventory and provide more inventory. Or a healthier local retail economy could attract outside businesses to locate here. If we all change just a little, chances are we can all help each other.

Opinion

Public sector unsustainable as is Sir: I was shocked Mr. Corcoran had the cajones to publish open questions concerning municipal payroll costs (“Budget survey? More info, please,” in the Dec. 20 Chatham Voice). He is correct this is not how it used to be. I am excited to oblige with most of the answers showing repeatedly the public sector enjoys a 20-per-cent premium over the average private working class. The disparity is due to the contract renewals over the past few decades when the public sector received wage increases plus benefits as opposed to the average factory or private employees whose wages did not increase due to rising benefit and pension costs. The benefit costs came out of the private workers’ wages, which result-

ed in the stagnation of wages. All the while, government workers’ take-home pay increased every contract; their benefits were added on top of their salary. The Fraser Institute and others analysts annually publish studies showing the wage gap illustrating the public service employee benefit by 7.6 per cent over the private sector. It compares similar skilled jobs requiring the same experience, skill level, and education. If we factor in the average three-per-cent increase in every contract, the gap becomes 12.6 per cent with a 37.5-hour workweek and the number of sick days allowed per year being 12.4 days public verses 7.6 days missed in the private sector. But there’s more.

Where the gap takes off, is, as Bruce questioned, in the pension plan and the benefits. The gap lies in 95 per cent of those public pensions are defined benefit plan, against only 42 per cent of the private sector. Defined benefit plans add another 12.5 per cent of payroll costs that the employee receives over and above their salary. Simply put, a private-sector wage of $60,000 is $67,500 for the public sector, but total costs is near $75,000 with benefits added. What is detrimental to the economy is 18.6 per cent of all the employed work for the government. Let’s say one in six to include the retired who do have income. So look out your window and count six homes. You and your 4 neighbours must support the sixth home

- their car, the mortgage, food, vacation, everything. Is that sustainable? Another way to look at the budget is approximately $210 million is collected from property taxes and local sources which coincidentally is almost equal to the cost of paying our over 2,100 municipal employees, leaving the balance of over $100 million received from the province and federal coffers that pays for roads, sewers, etc. So for every $3 of budget, $2 is payroll. The tough questions must be asked for we cannot solve current problems with current thinking. Thank you, Mr. Corcoran, for publishing real public concerns. Sources available on request. C-K police help Camp Vincent Sir: Camp Vincent would like to thank the Chatham-Kent police for choosing them as this year’s recipient for their annual golf tournament proceeds. This tournament raised

$4,100 which will help the camp sponsor children to come to camp in 2019 and purchase programming supplies. We are very appreciative

for all of the sponsors, golfers and organizers who helped make this a successful event. We are also very appreciative again to the Chatham-Kent Police for

choosing us as recipients and for all the work they do in the community. Thank you. Lisa Diesbourg Camp Vincent Administrator

Local bartender’s creation to be featured in commemorative book By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

Julie Brooks’ love of making Caesar beverages raised some eyebrows and interest with the makers of Mott’s Clamato. So much so that she’s to be featured in the Mott’s Clamato 50 Years, 50 Stories book celebrating the Caesar. Brooks, manager at Bar Our Back (B.O.B.’s) in Chatham, learned of the contest by Mott’s to be part of the book, so she entered and told her story. “I have customers who love my Caesars,” she said proudly. “I make them with pride.” She also makes them

with a vast assortment of ingredients, depending on the desires of the recipient. She’ll ask a customer if they want mild, medium or hot, and if they choose hot, do they want Frank’s Red Hot hot or Siracha sauce hot. “If you give someone a Caesar that is just too spicy for them, they won’t drink it,” she said, explaining her versatility with the spice level of each Caesar. Brooks said she interacts with customers as close friends, or even relatives. “My story includes the fact that everybody is like a family. People come in for a ‘Julie Caesar,’” she said.

When The Voice caught up with Brooks, she’d just finished making a Caesar with Hungarian sausage, shrimp, olives, a cherry tomato, pickled onion, the obligatory pickle, a hot pepper, Worcestershire Sauce, hot sauce, oh, and vodka and Mott’s Clamato. She said she has even used candied bacon in her beverage making. All that effort resulted in her opting to enter the contest with thousands of others around Canada, but her dedication got her into the top 50 and a spot in the book. Brooks has been tending bar for two decades, and enjoys the following she has earned for her Caesar creations.

First responders in Chatham-Kent will have an added support resource

Warriors Canada (WWC). At a recent Chatham-Kent Police Services Board meeting, Chief Gary Conn signed on to get extra mental health support for police officers, fire personnel and ambulance staff suffering from operation stress injuries such as PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). WWC is a national mental health charity started initially for soldiers stationed in Afghanistan in 2001, according to executive director Scott Maxwell. The intent was to support soldiers with care packages from home, and once the mission wound up, the focus of the WWC adapted to include soldiers coming home suf-

Conn said he is pleased to enter into a partnership with WWC and be able to offer additional support programs to the ones already available for his officers. “It’s a real privilege and an honour to sign this professional partnership with Wounded Warriors Canada,” Conn said. “When it comes to the wellness of our members, that’s top priority. In Chatham-Kent in policing alone, we have five members off on PTSD as we currently speak. The

Egg-sactly what we wanted Talk about the perfect Christmas Day for yours truly. And some of it included sitting outside on a chilly day. But that was just to make sure the Big Green Egg was up and running properly as I had the job of cooking a nice 10-pound prime rib for Christmas dinner at the home of our friends Pete and Arlene. They are the Lindsay ex-pats who were our neighbours for 13 years before we moved here in 2001. They joined us in the banana belt last month. And their two adult children came down to celebrate Christmas in the new home. We got the invite for dinner, I found prime rib on sale, and offered to bring the meat. After a long Christmas Eve, first eating turkey dinner with family and then meeting up with Arlene and Pete to greet their youngest son as he got off the train from Toronto, Christmas Day began about 10 a.m. at our house. We take our time opening gifts – one at a time as we watch each opening – including stocking stuffers. I feared I wouldn’t have enough time to get the meat cooked by 6 p.m. But I was wrong. I prepared the Egg by filling it with charcoal and lighting it in just a couple of spots. When you plan to cook low and slow, you only want limited ignition points, or it is too tough to keep at a low temperature. I seasoned the prime rib with a

coffee rub and set the Egg for 235 F to cook. For longer cooks, I like to use a DigiQ temperature control. It controls the airflow into the bottom of the Egg and uses a fan when needed to add some oxygen and feed the coals. The unit is great for controlling cooking temperature. It has a probe to monitor the Egg’s temperature as well as the meat’s temperature. I tell it what temperature I want to cook at, and at what temperature the meat is to be done. When the latter is reached, a regular alarm will beep. The unit will also beep if the temperature of the Egg gets too hot or too cold. But you have to be within earshot to hear the beeping. And if you want to keep close monitoring of the temperatures – a smart thing to do until the Egg settles down and the temperature evens out – you have to sit right beside the Egg. That’s something I’ve done in the past, even in -15C weather, with the wind howling and the snow flying by horizontally. But I’m older and smarter now.

Barbecuing with the help of technology and warmth Continued from page 12

I won’t barbecue in that crappy weather anymore. But even on cool days, why hang out in the backyard in a chill wind when you don’t have to? Sensei Jeff has a DigiQ that delivers info via Wi-Fi to his cell phone. Thanks to Mary and Brenna, I have a Traeger wireless monitoring system that works great too. The outside unit has a probe for the meat and another for the barbecue, while the receiver unit will deliver the information to me wherever I am in the house, or in the backyard. It’s handy for doing yard work, or for relaxing in a nice, warm house in the winter. I hooked that device up and retired to the basement. So, with a glass of Irish whiskey in hand, and music playing on the stereo, I cooked out in the cold. Except I was cozy under a blanket and in recline mode inside. As for the tunes, they came from the iPod and went through one of my Christmas presents – a Logitech Bluetooth adapter. This little device is awesome, as it turns any stereo receiver, regardless of age, into a Bluetooth equipped music player. We had a cord hooked up via

phono jacks in the back of the receiver so Brenna could play her music from her phone when she has friends over. But she had to drag a stool over to the stereo and sit there to DJ. Now you can move around the basement, phone in hand, and control things. Or, in my case, you can chill out in the recliner and enjoy. Being Christmas Day and all, I went to my holiday playlist ... NOT! Nope, Eddie Money’s “Walk on Water” christened the new set up nicely, followed by a plethora of classic rock tunes. As for the cooking, I checked on the temperature settings regularly, and had to go outside to alter the flow just once. The problem is my Egg still has an issue with how the lid sits and it is no longer airtight as a result. I had a hard time keeping the cooking temperature below 260 F, let alone at my desired 235 F. The result was a faster cooking time. I was done at 4 p.m. But we let Arlene know well in advance it was cooking faster than expected, and she adapted. We ate earlier than anticipated, and it was delicious. One of her sons is a vegetarian. He loved the smell of the prime rib, but didn’t falter.

Heck, I even tried a chunk of tofu that night. It didn’t suck, as it takes in the flavours it is cooked in (Thai red curry sauce). Help for Emily

We received a phone call recently from a woman who said she wanted to donate to Emily Hime’s Hime For Help organization that runs the orphanage in Haiti, after reading our article in the Dec. 13 Chatham Voice on Emily. One problem. I neglected to provide an option for someone if they don’t have ready access to a computer. The woman declined to give her phone number and said she wanted to see the info in print in our paper, so others would know too. Fair enough. To donate to help the kids in Emily’s orphanage, you can mail a cheque to Hime for Help, 4 Whippoorwill Cres., Chatham, ON N7L 4A3. Folks with computers and access to the Internet can still go through HimeForHelp. org.

6. A suspicious man was seen going door to door on a residential street, trying door handles at 2:30 a.m. At one particular house, however, he was startled when the homeowner opened the door. What did he want? A can opener apparently – but he forgot the can. 5. Committing break and enters during the winter months has its own set of problems, besides the obvious “it’s not legal” part. After pulling into a snow-filled driveway of a rural home, a man tried to break into the house. Unfortunately he wasn’t counting on a resident being home. The man fled back to his vehicle, which his accomplice had gotten stuck in the snow.

The pair was able to free the car, but not before the homeowner obtained the plate. The pair was located a short distance away and arrested. 4. When officers arrested an intoxicated woman in Wallaceburg, she flung herself onto the front of the cruiser, opened her mouth and dragged her teeth across the hood of the car. She clamped down so hard she was able to scrape the paint and clear coat completely off. Good teeth, or a good dentist? In either case, she was charged with mischief. 3. Police were called about a suspicious person who was loitering outside a business in Chatham, asking passers-by for cigarettes. The ‘person’ was

wearing a dark coat and scarf across their face. When asked to identify themselves, a highpitched voice provided a female’s name. He/she had even stuffed their coat to appear to have womanly curves. However, when the scarf was removed, the apparent woman had a thick bushy moustache. The man was well known to police and known to uses aliases, however, this was the first female name he had tried. Perhaps because he was out past his court appointed curfew... 2. Parishioners had a special treat one Sunday

morning when a man wandered into the church, walked directly to the piano, sat down and started playing a jazzy rendition of Happy Birthday. He was asked to leave. Officers found him in the back of the church and after a scuffle were able to cuff him. He was charged with disturbing a religious service. 1. Imagine the surprise of a business owner when he arrived at work first thing in the morning to find a naked man wandering around inside. Police attended, and after viewing the surveillance video, the eventful night

was revealed. It turns out the man was initially clothed when he entered an insecure door and waited patiently in front of the “wait to be seated” sign ... for 20 minutes. When he got no service, the man went to the bar and appeared to be engaged in a lengthy and animated conversation with a bartender (who was not there) and ate appetizers from a non-existent plate. Then the party really got underway, as the man was seen engaging in an interpretive chicken dance during which he eventually stripped down to his
