Bruce Corcoran/The Chatham Voice
Chatham Voice employees Michelle Owchar, left, and Fatima Pisquem are all smiles after a visit from Kyle Bunney of Community Living Chatham-Kent (CLCK) recently. Bunney dropped off a copy of the 2020 CLCK Lottery Calendar, prompting staff to slip over and get copies for themselves that same day. There is more than $17,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs this year, including a $1,000 travel voucher from Vellinga’s Travel to one lucky winner on Feb. 14. Call 519-352-1174, e-mail info@clc-k.ca, or stop in to 650 Riverview Dr. in Chatham to get your calendar for $20.
Eric Broadbent’s love of music has taken him from the stage to the studio; from behind a guitar to in front of a camera. The Chatham-Kent native, who for more than a decade has shredded strings as lead guitarist in the rock band Finding Core, is now a veteran YouTube content producer with multiple shows on his Music Gear Network (https://www.youtube. com/channel/UCJrQQt_
koCKng5P1x4afbnw). Broadbent, 51, has gone from playing on the same stage as some of rock and roll’s biggest names to interviewing them, learning about what makes them tick, and what gives them their unique sound. And he does most of it from the comfort of his Ridgetown home. Much of Broadbent’s drive comes from his lifelong appreciation for the talent of the man behind the Frankenstrat, Eddie Van Halen.

Excellent women wanted By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
The May Court Club of Chatham is looking for a few good women. Well, excellent ones, to be exact. The club’s Women in Excellence awards return this spring, and club members ask citizens to nominate women for six different categories: Arts & Culture; Business & Professions; Community & Volunteerism; Education & Training; Health, Science & Technology; and Young Woman of Excellence. Nominees must have lived or worked in Chatham-Kent, must still be alive and able to attend the awards dinner, and must not currently hold an elected public political office position. The dinner takes place May 29 at the Bradley Centre. May Court member Penny McGregor said the club took over the Women in Excellence Awards after the YMCA
stopped doing it. “The YMCA used to do this in Chatham, as they have in many communities. They dropped it about 12 years ago. They just didn’t have the volunteers to do it,” she said. “We went to the Y saying we’d like to pick this up. They were delighted that we would do it.” The club holds the awards every two years, and McGregor said they are well received. “It’s a time to honour women and make people aware there are all these wonderful things going on in C-K and wonderful people doing them.” Janine Griffore, a 2018 award winner for education, said the awards are an excellent means of recognition for C-K women. “I was very honoured that May Court recognized the efforts in education,” Griffore said. “Educators influence a lot of kids on their futures.” Griffore, a native of Grande Pointe who went to high school

in Pain Court, began her career in education as a secondary school teacher, but climbed the ladder. She became principal at École secondaire de Pain Court, before moving on to serve as a curriculum consultant, then a superintendent and later director of education with Conseil scolaire catholique Providence. In 2012, she took the role of assistant deputy minister for the French language,
Aboriginal Learning and Research Division for the Ministry of Education before retiring in 2016. May Court member Shirley Loyer said those interested in nominating someone for the Women in Excellence Awards, or who just want more information, can visit the club’s website, http://maycourtchatham. ca/, for more details. “It’s very easy to download (a nomination form) and send in,”
she said. A committee selects the honouree in each category, but Loyer stressed May Court members don’t do the nominating. “It’s up to the community,” she said. McGregor said nominations close in mid-March. The May Court Club has been part of Chatham for 85 years. The organization raises funds for families and children’s programs.

Still time to support United Way The Chatham Voice
With about a week remaining in the annual United Way of Chatham-Kent (OWOCK) fundraising campaign, organizers report they are just a few percentage points away from their target of $1.5 million. These are the funds that are reinvested back into the community to support programs throughout all of Chatham-Kent and invested into research to better address critical issues that officials said take patience and compassion to solve. “We are still working hard along with our campaign chairs Advanced Realty and we have not given up hope that we can meet our goal again this year,” Tom Slager, director of donor engagement
and communications, said in a release. “We are encouraging anyone who has not yet donated to please do so. There is still a few more days before our Jan. 15 deadline. Each donation made to United Way creates an impact that can last a lifetime. It funds programs that help people when they need it most. For example, when Zara Belanger-Pepper was eight, her whole world turned upside down with the death of her father. When a child is so young it is hard for them to express the words and emotions one feels when faced with a devastating loss. By attending, the VON Kids’ Circle program that annually helps 200 children and teens, she was given the care, support and skills needed to get

through difficult times. Now, as a teenager, she is sharing her journey and supporting others in similar situations through volunteering her time and her writing.
Slager said there are many ways people can contribute. “The campaign is still running, but nearing completion. You can make a donation easily and safe-
ly right from your computer or phone by going online,” he said. “We also are still receiving cash and cheque donations through the mail and in person at 425 McNaugh-
ton Ave West. There is still time for the public to help get us over the top.” To donate, visit online at uwock.ca, stop by the office, call 519-354-0430, or mail in your donations.

Broadbent streams shows from Ridgetown Continued from page 1
After Finding Core wound down, Broadbent played with 5150, a Canadian Van Halen cover band. And when the touring ceased, about three and a half years ago, Broadbent turned to online broadcasting. His passion for all things Van Halen led to the development of EVH Gear Network, which featured the EVH brand, the brainchild of Eddie Van Halen, as well as in-

terviews of musicians who use the products. That morphed into Music Gear Network earlier this year. At his busiest, Broadbent, who runs Design39Media by day, had four different shows running on his YouTube channel: the Rock Shop; the Helix Hour, which features Yamaha equipment; The Kramer Korner, which focuses on Kramer guitars; and the Rocking Dead, where Broadbent featured in-

terviews with actors from the TV show The Walking Dead and focused on all things about the show and its spinoff video games. He has discontinued the latter show, as he was doing too much. Through it all, he’s chatted with the likes of comedians George Lopez and Harry Shearer (in his Derek Smalls character in the faux band Spinal Tap), revered rock performers such as legendary bassist Billy Sheehan, Alice Cooper’s Nita Strauss, and Living Color’s Vernon Reid. As he gains interest on the Internet, Broadbent also gains comparisons. Many of those are to Smalls, the bassist of the hard rock band that was featured in the mocku-
mentary “This is Spinal Tap.” Smalls and Broadbent share a common identifier, and it’s not a cucumber wrapped in tinfoil. Instead, it’s the horseshoe moustache. “Derek Smalls – I get that a lot. Probably 10 per cent of my YouTube comments seem to relate to me looking like Derek Smalls,” Broadbent said, adding he enjoys it. “I’m a huge fan of Spinal Tap.” Broadbent and his son Eric Jr. met Shearer/Smalls at NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) last year in Anaheim, Calif. He knew it would be great to get him on Rock Shop. But it wasn’t easy. “It was probably a good year in the works. I didn’t know if I’d be getting him as Harry Shearer or in character. And he was in character as Derek Smalls,” Broadbent said. The result was 30 minutes of fun (https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=qD-BgLWH-SY)

Sept. 25. Discussions dealt with such important issues (to Smalls at least) of colour fields, as each song could require a different coloured bass guitar to play. “Each song has its own colour field, and if you don’t represent that, then the audience isn’t getting full value for the song,” Smalls said in the interview. It’s classic Tap mentality. Smalls is but one of Broadbent’s many guests he’s interviewed to date. Some stand out in particular to the host, including guitarist Jason Becker. “He’s a great guitarist with ALS (a progressive neurodegenerative disease). He was diagnosed at age 20 back in the early 1990s while with the David Lee Roth band,” Broadbent said. “He’s now confined to a wheelchair and can no longer speak. He communicated via a special computer.” “There have just been so many great interviews. It’s only been three years and a few months,” he said. And it morphed out of just creating a YouTube channel to upload videos and archived footage of Finding Core. “I had just quit the band before that. I got positive feedback (on the content) and it eventually turned into having conversations with some people,” he said. But once he started speaking with bigger name musicians, others readily agreed to be interviewed on his YouTube shows. Continued on page 5

Straight Talk with Jeff Mardling “Now is the time” Each new year brings a sense of fresh starts, new beginnings, and goal setting. If you are like me, I always begin with good intentions. Then, as life happens, fresh starts give way to old habits, new beginnings turn into same old routines and goal setting is mere dreaming. Yesterday I received a call from a lady who had moved away from Chatham-Kent one year ago. She and her husband had preplanned their funeral arrangements some time ago and she had always meant to call me to update a few things, not to mention they had moved several hours away. She said, “Jeff, I’ve been moving this phone call on my to do list, month to month for several months.” After a brief and pleasant conversation, she was at such peace to know we will handle everything when the time comes, even from a distance. Over my nearly 30 years in funeral service, the main comment I hear is that people wished they had done some planning 10 years ago! Death is always unexpected and very emotional. I have never met anyone who regrets that a plan is in place and that the details are looked after. Such a gift to those loved ones left behind. If you have considered phoning us and have moved that call on your to-do list, you are not alone! As 2020 begins afresh, may I encourage you to get in touch with us today. I have spent a lifetime helping and caring for my neighbours, ensuring that they have peace of mind at a most difficult time. Get in touch today. It’s so nice to have one less thing on the list!

Investigative journalism News that community independent newspapers such as The Chatham Voice and the Thamesville Herald received approval to hire reporters as part of the nationwide Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) is good news for the citizens of Chatham-Kent. (See our story on page 11.) There will be 105 journalists armed with curiosity and a mental flashlight, looking to shine it into the dark corners of government and society in general. All positions, at 94 host newspapers across Canada are for investigative journalists. None are intended to replace existing staff at the participating newspapers. Here at The Voice, we plan on augmenting our municipal government coverage. The reporter will cover council meetings, but more importantly, will follow up and dig deeper on key stories of the public’s interest. LJIs aren’t here to scratch the surface; they are here to look under the table or behind the filing cabinet. It’s their job to get to the root of the issues. News Media Canada deserves credit for taking a lead in working with the Department of Canadian Heritage to fund the LJI positions. Newspapers have long been considered the primary beacon of quality detailed journalism. Declines in advertising revenue have culled reporter pools at many a newspaper across the country and indeed around the world. The LJIs should help improve news coverage. The positions won’t just benefit The Herald and The Voice in terms of news content. Storied produced by LJI reporters will be fed to Canadian Press and will in turn be available across the country. In places in Chatham-Kent where people don’t get The Voice, the content could show up in other publications. We are simply shining the light into the proverbial dark corner so everyone can see. This won’t be a witch-hunt. We are searching for greater details on stories of interest, answers to questions that go below the surface, and we will report on successes as well as failures. It will involve holding people accountable and to a higher standard of transparency. For the public, expect more stories focused on municipal issues, delving deeper into such matters as the quest for a new arena or the divesting of the “railroad to nowhere,” affordable housing and the need for more industrial land, to name a few. We are looking forward to the new journalists and the stories they will bring, not just here in Chatham-Kent, but across Ontario and the nation.

Opinion
Take part in Relay for Life Sir: Recently, new data released by the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) showed that around 63 per cent of Canadians diagnosed with cancer will survive at least five years after their diagnosis, compared to 55 per cent in the early 1990s. This unprecedented improvement wouldn’t be possible without incredible advancements made in cancer research to improve diagnosis,
treatment and care for people living with and beyond cancer. We invite you to sign up for your local CCS Relay For Life event to show those with cancer they’re not alone. Relay For Life is an inspiring event that unites communities across Canada to show the people we love that life is bigger than their diagnosis. It celebrates
those living with cancer, provides hope to those moving past it, and remembers and honours those we’ve lost to the disease. Our vision to create a world where no one fears cancer is only achievable if we work with people united by the same goals. Together, we have made significant progress but there’s still so much more to be
done and we need your help. With the support of hundreds of thousands of Canadians across the country, we are a forcefor-life in the face of cancer. Join us at Relay For Life in Chatham-Kent on June 5, 2020 and help us prove that together we are bigger than cancer. Register today at relayforlife.ca The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life team
Honouring life with a beautiful death Sir: When the Chatham-Kent Hospice opened, we were anxious to see the new facility – never dreaming that my darling husband, Gary, would spend his last 10 days in this beautiful place. Gary suffered many bizarre illnesses during his life and he cheated death many times. Even with the difficulties of his illnesses, we celebrated life. In June 2019, we had a lovely party with our four children, 14 grandchildren, family and friends to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary, my retirement and my 70th birthday. Gary sang
a special song to me at our wedding, and he sang the same song at our anniversary celebration —just three weeks before he passed away. When Gary’s condition started to deteriorate quickly, the visiting nurse felt I could no longer care for him at home. She suggested Chatham-Kent Hospice. He was admitted to a beautiful room a few days later. For 10 days, I was able to rest while the most compassionate, caring, wonderful staff took over all of the caregiver responsibilities, allowing
me to just be a wife. The staff were amazing in their willingness to do anything to make Gary’s last days the best possible. The nurses, support staff and volunteers catered to Gary and to our entire family as his last hours came closer. Gary’s little puppy, Dash was allowed to stay on Gary’s bed for the entire stay, which brought him comfort. Gary breathed his last breath just minutes after the cocoon he had been given on admission opened, revealing a beautiful butterfly that flew off towards heaven – fol-
lowed by Gary’s sprit. The next few hours were precious as we said our final goodbyes in a beautiful farewell service held in the Reflection Room. Prayers were said, hymns were sung and family members, including the grandchildren, lit floating candles before we escorted Gary to the front door, passing an honour guard. Our memories of those 10 precious days will be with us forever. Thank to every single person at Chatham-Kent Hospice for your dedication to making death a beautiful experience. Heritage home a B&B The Chatham Voice
Newcomers to Chatham-Kent, Faith Hale and Ken Wright, were not looking for a historic or designated property, however, they were drawn to “Bleak House” and have become the owners and caretakers of this piece of history. “The home called us, and it is our desire to share this magnificent home and its rich history with the community,” the
couple said in a media release. Bleak House was built in 1887 by Herbert Albert Patterson, a lumber dealer. Patterson was also mayor from 1886 to 1889. Bleak House, located on the riverside of King Street in Chatham, was given its name after Patterson filed for bankruptcy. The name, “Bleak House” references the novel of the same name written by Charles Dickens.
“Bleak House” on King Street is now a bed & breakfast.

Hale and Wright operate an Air B & B within their home with two rooms available for accommodations. These rooms are named after characters from the novel; “Summerson” Suite and “Lady Honoria “ Room. Their home was built with stone and is a rare surviving example of American Shingle Style in Southwestern Ontario. It also features a porte cochere that is a covered porch-like structure

at the side of the home that would have been designed to allow passengers in a horse drawn carriage to enter or exit the home without being exposed to the elements. The property also has a 1500-square-foot carriage house that the homeowners would like to develop as living space. Since purchasing this designated heritage property in March, the couple lost no time in making this house their home, with renovations to the kitchen and bathroom as well as general maintenance. Hale and Wright were eager to share their appreciation of their home with some members of the Municipal Heritage Committee, who recently presented them with a welcome gift basket containing information about owning a designated property as well as an introduction to some of the highlights and amenities of living in Chatham-Kent. “This home was built to last and at 132 years of age, it is in remarkable condition,” noted Hale. Not only was the house solidly constructed but it was also embellished with quality details and finishes. Such features as art nouveau stained glass windows, embossed door hinges, exterior bal-

house for cigar and pipe smoking. Hale and Wright are enjoying their time in Chatham and describe their neighbourhood as wonderful. They have appreciated how friendly and helpful the neighbours have been, providing them with recommendations for tradespeople, for example. “The neighbourhood is filled with loving people who have been outreaching and welcoming,” they said. It is the homeowner’s desire to support the community in sharing the experience of this exceptional home with others through their Air B & B. “It is an honour to restore this historic home, which forms a rich part of Chatham’s history,” the couple said.

$3-million sewer pump work to begin The Chatham Voice
Expect to see the area around the Civic Centre to be ripped up in the near future. Work will commence shortly on a $3,071,828 project by the Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission to relocate a sanitary pump station to a site near the intersection of King Street West and Second Street. The existing pump station has been in operation since 1963 and is currently underground in the staging area in front of Station One of the Chatham-Kent Fire Service. This location creates operational and safety challenges for the PUC, officials said, as access and egress of emergency vehicles from the fire station cannot be impeded. The existing station is also experiencing on-going maintenance issues due to its age. It is being moved to the northeast corner of the intersection outside of the paved roadway. All work will be on the municipal boulevard and within the adjacent corner of the existing Chatham-Kent Police Services parking lot. Officials anticipate the
construction work also take place outside of the paved roadway and there should be minimal to no impediment to traffic during the first phase of the project from January to May. Seven municipal parking spaces along King Street West will be allocated to the contractor as part of their laydown area. In addition, the sidewalk at the east corner of King and Second Street will be closed. Construction of the pump station is scheduled to be completed in May. Work to reconstruct and redirect sewers to this new station are then scheduled to start. This work will be within the roadway, and temporary closures, lane diversions and on-street parking restrictions can be expected as sewer construction is executed. Municipal officials say they anticipate the project will be completed by November. Birnam Excavating Limited of Arkona will be doing the work.
news organizations. Stories produced by LJI reporters will be made available to media organizations and the public via an online portal managed by The Canadian Press, according to NMC. “We were pleased that our first call for applications for the Local Journalism Initiative drew an excellent response,” said
John Hinds, president and CEO of NMC said in a release. “We believe this will make a significant contribution to the industry and help strengthen civic journalism across Canada, and we look forward to our next round of applications.” Created and funded by the Government of Canada, the LJI is a five-year
program that supports the creation of original civic journalism relevant to the diverse needs of people living in news deserts and areas of news poverty across Canada. The Initiative will provide funding for host newsrooms to hire reporters, supporting accurate and reliable civic journalism in underserved com-
munities. LJI coverage will help ensure the vitality of democracy, better inform citizens, engage community and foster civic debate, connecting Canadians with their local governments, in their councils, courts and other civic institutions. The Thamesville Herald also received approval for a LJI reporter.

The Chatham Voice is one of 94 host news organizations across the country to benefit from the Local Journalism Initiative (LJI). News Media Canada (NMC) announced recently it would fund 105 journalists under the federal government’s LJI. The program provides grant funding to news organizations to hire reporters to create new journalistic content covering civic issues and institutions of importance to Canadians. The Voice will utilize the grant to hire an additional reporter to more closely cover municipal government, among other issues. “News Media Canada
put out the call for applications and we looked at what we are doing here at The Voice and what we’d like to do better,” Voice general manager Bruce Corcoran said. “One weak spot is council coverage, but just as important is delving deeper into stories. Due to limited resources, too often we’ve been slow to follow up on stories of interest. That is going to change.” NMC reports a total of 155 applications were received from News Media Canada’s initial call for entries in November and adjudicated by an independent panel of industry experts in early December. Eligible applicants included press agencies, private news organizations, and non-profit

Sasseville enjoys Japan The Chatham Voice
Chatham swimmer Genevieve Sasseville scooped up the awards while part of a Team Ontario trip to Japan recently. The Pool Shark was part of the provincial contingent that spent a week in Japan just prior to Christmas. While in Japan, the Ontario Team trained with the Japanese swimmers, was immersed in their culture, and learned hands-on about their approach to sports. The tour had a unique emphasis on the mental side of sport; learning techniques to improve performance beyond the pool deck. The tour finished with a two-day short-course
(25-metre) meet in Sagamihara, Japan, featuring more than 2,000 athletes of various ages. Sasseville made the podium in all her events, winning gold in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 50m fly, 200m fly; and silver in the 100m fly. Instead of medals the podium finishers received special plaques handcrafted from the trees affected by the 2011 tsunami. “It was an incredible experience. Getting to train with the Japanese team in their home pool was amazing,” Sasseville said in a release. “I learned so much about how they train compared to us, and the meet was definitely challenging.”

Life
Unseasonably great grilling weather The Big Green Egg saw solid action in recent weeks, starting with a spiral ham. Friends Arlene and Pete wanted to invite us over for dinner. But they asked if I’d cook their ham on the Egg. Duh! Armed with warm weather, I was in. For anyone who has not “cooked” a spiral ham before, it’s really just warming it up, as they come pre-cooked. But when you do it on the Egg rather than in the oven, you can give it some wood smoke flavour. I fired up the Egg, added the indirect cooking plate, topped by a drip ban filled with water, added wood chips to the coals, and plopped the ham on the grill right above the drip pan. In an oven, you’d just get a mess and a dried up ham if you tried it that way. On the Egg, we got apple wood flavour added into the ham, and an easy cleanup. As the Egg worked its reheating magic, I had tunes playing and a cold beer nearby. Pete and one son Tyler surprised me with a backyard visit (you don’t have to hang out in the backyard while the longer cooks take place on the Egg, but when the weather is nice, I certainly do). Even with the drip pan, I still worried the ham might dry out. After all, you foil these things and cook them in a roasting pan in an oven. But I needn’t have worried. We didn’t even bother with the glaze. It, and everything else Mary Beth and Arlene prepared, was delicious. A few days later, we cooked a prime rib. It was a small one, just over four pounds. But there were only three of us that night. I crusted it in coffee rub (thank you, John Schinkel!), set the Egg for about 300 F (I’ve done them at 250 F and 350F in the past, it just depends on how quickly you want things cooked), put in my Traeger meat probe and grill temperature sensors (again, thanks, Schinkels’) fired up the music, opened a brew, and sat back on a beautiful afternoon to enjoy the aroma
Bruce Corcoran and the yard. The drip pan and indirect plate were in play, of course. Mary handled the roasted potatoes and green beans indoors. I cooked this one to about 132 F internal temperature. Anything between 130 and 135 is considered medium rare. It probably continued to cook for a bit past the point of being pulled off the grill, as all meat tends to do, so the exterior was medium and the middle was medium rare. Talk about tasty! As the weather turns colder, the Egg may hibernate for a bit, but in the short term at least, it was in fine form. Finn-tastic behaviour As most readers know, our cat, Finn, is a nut job. OK, he’s a cat. And like most any cat, he is drawn to our Christmas tree. In past years, he’s climbed up the artificial tree, laid on lower branches to the point they are permanently out of position on the tree and no amount of bending will get them back in place, and attacked all the sparkly bits. A newspaper comic sketch once summed up the view from a cat’s perspective. The feline is atop a barstool, slumped over the counter at a local watering hole, lamenting that his family had put up a tree and placed sparkly balls and tinsel all over it, yet expected him to not play with anything! That’s the truth, isn’t it? Last year, the tree went up right before Christmas and came down on Boxing Day after he wouldn’t leave it alone. But this year, he be-
haved differently. And we only changed one thing. This time around, we didn’t put tinsel on the tree. It had its lights and ornaments, but no silvery tinsel – reflective string in the eyes of a cat.
How can they not stay away from that stuff? And how many cat owners report scooping the litter box during the holidays, only to find tinsel in the cat’s stool? Sparkly poop. It happens all too often for those
darned cats. But this year, with no tinsel, Finn did not attack the tree. In fact, he took to curling up underneath it to sleep! Lights on or off, it didn’t’ matter. You could spot the critter at the tree’s base, content.
I cross my fingers that the tinsel factor continues to work in the future, or the tree will go up just before Christmas and come down as soon as the celebrations are over. Heck, I’ll even give him a couple of treats.
