Residence to house upwards of 200 students Continued from page 1

“This endeavour will support St Clair College’s growth and development.” Taking the media on a tour of the construction site, Boutin said each section will house four students, each in their own room, with a shower and washroom in the suite, and a common kitchen area and living room. “There will also be a large common room, a gym, and outside, we will refinish the tennis court and we’ll be doing something with the waterfront as well. We find that here, you don’t use the waterfront enough, so that’s why we will have canoe and kayak opportunities for the students, and maybe we will create some racing and that kind of thing,” Boutin said

of his plans to make the residence an enjoyable student experience. As part of the process to ensure that La Residence construction is proceeding as smoothly as possible, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent Building Department has been working closely with the Everlast Group to ensure that all plans and construction activities are up to code, safe for the community, and able to move forward. “I have seen the plans for this new student residence and they are amazing,” said Darrin Canniff, Chatham-Kent mayor. “I’m aware that housing can at times be a barrier so it’s fantastic when the municipality can work with local devel-

opers to help eliminate those barriers.” “Not only is the initial $9-million investment positive for all of Chatham-Kent, but the economic spinoffs of having 200 more people in the downtown Chatham core will be important for local business,” Canniff added. “Think about it – we’ll have 200 students coming to downtown Chatham and creating a lot of economic activity. We hope a lot of them will choose to stay here in Chatham-Kent.” Following the completion of phase three in 2019, it is planned that students will be able to begin accessing the residence in line with the St. Clair College semester schedule.

Feds upgrade fishing docks

By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com

The commercial fishing docks at Erieau are getting a much-needed upgrade thanks to federal funding announced Feb. 14 at Bayside Brew Pub. Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Ahmed Hussen, on behalf of the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, said the Government of Canada is investing more than $2.76 million for infrastructure improvements at three Ontario small craft harbours in the communities of Erieau, Wheatley, and the Town of Lakeshore. “We investing $1.66

million in the Rondeau (Erieau) Harbour, a large commercial fishing harbour on Lake Erie that is the homeport to dozens of local and transient commercial fishing vessels. The project will replace the existing timber piles with steel pipe piles of four jetties and replace the concrete decking on six jetties. The project was awarded to East Elgin Concrete Forming. Work started in the fall of 2018 and will be completed by March 2019,” Hussen said. Erieau is a large class “A” commercial fishing harbour, one that is managed by the Erieau Harbour Authority. This

harbour is homeport to approximately 13 to 17 commercial fishing vessels and eight to 12 transient commercial fishing vessels. Annual landings for Rondeau are approximately 3,995 tonnes and

have a value of approximately $5.9 million. Erieau Harbour Master Jeff Vidler said he is very happy with the funding announcement, as are the fishermen that use the docks. He said

the upgrade will make it safer for the fishermen to transfer their catch and for day-to-day use of the docks. Wheatley Harbour, the largest freshwater fishing harbour in the world and

largest commercial fishing harbour in the Central and Arctic Region, will receive $244,000 in funding to rehabilitate a timber pile wall and a new asphalt deck.

New C-K Transit task force launches The Chatham Voice

tions to be considered in preparation for a request for proposals for the existing transit contract that will expire in 2021. The committee is comprised of two municipal councillors, five local citizens – three of whom are regular transit riders and one representative of the Age Friendly Committee. The work of the Task Force has been divided into three distinct periods – short-term (end of April) mid-term (end of September) and lon-

The development of a new public transit strategy across Chatham-Kent has started with the first meeting of the new CK Transit Task Force recently. Established by Chatham-Kent council last December on a motion by Coun. Karen Kirkwood-Whyte, the eight-member committee met Feb. 8 and developed its mandate that includes: • Review the results of the CK Transit Survey, which concluded Nov. 30. • Review such other in-

formation as is already held by the municipality and other community partners. • Provide feedback on a report to municipal council outlining a public transit strategy for all of Chatham-Kent including preliminary recommendations to address current shortcomings and deficiencies. • Make recommendations to municipal council on the level and type of transit service for the annual budget review process in 2020. • Make preliminary recommendations on op-

ger term (end of January 2020). Task Force members heard presentations from two municipal staff members. Ann-Marie Millson provided an overview of current transit services provided throughout Chatham-Kent by Intouch Connection (urban conventional service in Chatham), Citilinx Transportation (inter-urban service and area-rated service in Wallaceburg) and Voyager Transportation (accessible service

in Chatham), while Joann Kjeldsen highlighted some of the research recently undertaken on innovative initiatives being introduced and/or piloted in other communities throughout Ontario. The work of the Task Force – which will include input from the general public – will align closely with work to be undertaken by staff members employed in the municipality’s Engineering and Transportation Division.

Task Force members will ensure that the public transit strategy aligns with the Master Transportation Plan and incorporates any government grants and funding opportunities available. The next meeting of the Task Force is scheduled for March 8. Those wishing to make a five-minute presentation are invited to e-mail Task Force Chair, Karen Kirkwood-Whyte at karen. kirkwood-whyte@chatham-kent.ca.

Condo owner looks at moving here By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com

The news that the Boardwalk on Thames condominium project in downtown Chatham is expected to be ready for leasing this July, ac-

Mary Beth Corcoran/The Chatham Voice

Victor Boutin, speaking at a showcase of the development of a new student residence in Chatham, discussed the progress of the Boardwalk on Thames condo project, and added he’s looking to move to Chatham when it’s complete.

cording to developer Victor Boutin with The Everlast Group, is good news for Chatham. Construction on the project began in 2012 and the build has been plagued with delays since that time. While in Chatham Feb. 14 announcing a $9-million student residence project, Boutin was asked how he can start another project when the condo project isn’t yet completed. “I think we should leave the past in the past and look ahead, and look at the future, Boutin said. “I can talk to you about all the problems we had with the condominium – with the trades and ones that were out of our control, but we have everything in shape now. The condominium will be finished by July and occupancy by August of this year. “Projects like this, you don’t do that in a few days. It’s like Rome they didn’t build Rome in a day, it took a few years. It’s the same thing here. In a few years, Chatham-Kent will be completely different. It’s a great place and it’s so close to the (United) States. Boutin said instead of selling the 90 units, which was the original concept, he plans to lease them. “There is a big demand for housing here, and we have been getting calls from all over Ontario; lots of people from Toronto who are very interested in this place here, he explained. “I think it would be a shame to sell such a nice project in such a nice town. I have really fallen in love with this town.

The work will further prevent erosion damage to the newly rehabilitated east wall. The project is expected to start this month. Hussen said another significant investment valued at $860,000 is directed towards the reconstruction project at the Thames River facility. The facility (known locally as the Lighthouse Cove Pier) is a recreational harbour located at the mouth of the Thames River at Lake St. Clair in the Town of Lakeshore. The work will include the rehabilitation of sections of timber crib wall structures with new steel sheet piles walls, concrete capping, boat launch ramp repairs and a new as-

phalt parking lot. Construction is underway and will be completed by the end of May Once the repair work has been completed, Small Craft Harbours will transfer ownership of the pier to the Town of Lakeshore. The mandate of the Small Craft Harbours Program is to keep harbours critical to the commercial fishing industry open and in good repair. The program also seeks to transfer ownership of recreational or low-activity harbours across Canada to interested third parties who are in the best position to operate them effectively and respond to the needs of the local residents and economy.

Enough dislike At the risk of breaking the Internet, it’s time to put away the hate towards the Boardwalk on Thames condo project in downtown Chatham and look to the positive benefits to our city’s future. Is almost 10 years too long to wait for a large project like the Boardwalk to come to completion? Yes. Has it been frustrating for motorists and businesses adjacent to the project over the years? Yes. Should we put all that aside now, and embrace an attractive building that is bringing upwards of 90 families and all the economic spinoffs associated with them to our downtown? Yes, we really should. With Victor Boutin’s announcement of a $9 million investment in creating a much-needed student residence out of the old YMCA building, and his investment in our municipality, he has shown us – eventually – he will get things done. Positive things that add to the attractiveness of Chatham-Kent to people who want to make a home here. For some reason, despite the hate thrown his way, he has come to love this community and all the area has to offer. Boutin is even talking about making his home here, and being excited about where Chatham-Kent will be in the next 10 years. So, take a moment to get all the negativity out, and let’s move on to be the enthusiastic and positive people who get behind projects that benefit our community. Make your jokes and predictions about when the student residence will actually be done and then, let it go. We have so many great things happening in Chatham-Kent, with new jobs, new business opportunities and yes, new construction projects. The downtown is looking better and better every year, thanks to people with money who choose to invest here and in the potential that anyone with a shred of vision can see. All the businesses, big and small, that have stuck it out in downtown Chatham are poised to finally reap their reward. So – less hate, more support. You don’t have to have him over to your house for dinner, but let’s make Mr. Boutin feel welcome in a community he may soon call home because we are better than that.

Opinion

Stuck in the sports doldrums This is the period I like to call the Winter of Sports Discontent. It’s the time between football and baseball. I realize I sound downright un-Canadian when I say this in the heart of hockey season, but I actually rarely watch hockey these days. And I stopped enjoying professional basketball years ago. For me, it’s all about the NFL or MLB. And after the Super Bowl in early February, there’s a lull. And then the pitchers

Bruce Corcoran and catchers report to spring training camp, followed a short time later by the rest of the boys of summer. I’m one of those guys who will watch a few innings of spring training on TV when I can.

And once the season begins in a little over a month, I’m a regular viewer, or listener. That’s the great thing about baseball, as it is a sport that you can listen to, depending on the quality of the radio broadcasters. Now, the recently retired Vin Scully was a master at painting pictures with his voice. He was a true vocal artist. Some folks will say they find baseball boring to watch or listen to, but it really is a rather cerebral

game, a battle between batterymates (the pitcher and catcher) and the batter. Each pitch is a chess move and can set up the one that follows. How the batter counters, or outright guesses, determines the outcome. The onset of baseball also indicates better weather is just around the corner, something I believe we all would like to see sooner rather than later. That groundhog appears to have lied to us!

Area cleanup well warranted Sir: Re: The big garbage dump along the railroad near the Black Bridge The property is also a hang out and drug haven or whatever site it has become. I read in The Chatham Voice a letter on the same issue as I wrote about by Dan Kelly – certainly a far, far longer and better letter

than I could ever write. Yes, the area cleanup is very long overdue. There are more excuses than you can shake a stick at why it’s all still there. It seems three lots of people should be responsible – the railroad, the

owner and the municipality. But it seems the municipality is the only one who can get the owner to clean it up. Perhaps get rid of the building if it’s never to be used for business. Having read your letter, Dan, you don’t have to apologize for sound-

ing like you ranted on, instead of a constructive criticism. The latter, it seems, gets you nowhere. But more and more people should rant on – there are many more garbage areas in Chatham to clean up I’m sure. Ruther Draper Chatham

Boat & Rec show coming to Chatham

By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

Not content with just helping to deliver the annual Chatham Indoor Car Show, XS Productions is shifting its focus to recreational fun. A week after they host the car show at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre in Chatham from March 1-3, XS launches the Southwestern Ontario Boat & Recreation Show on March 8-10. Nick Cadotte, of CKXS FM and XS Productions, said the Boat & Rec show is a bit more personal for him. “I’m a boater,” he said. “We’ve seen through our home show where we started adding a leisure aspect. There’s great demand.” The event will feature more than 30,000 square feet of boats, campers and recreational vehicles on dis-

play at the Convention Centre, with dealers on site to answer questions and provide information to interested visitors. Cadotte said vendors are showing great enthusiasm towards the event. “They have all kind of been working together. They want to showcase what Chatham-Kent has to offer,” he said. “We will have ATVs, some chartered fishing booths, anything recreational. It’s what we’re trying to focus on – Chatham-Kent has so many beautiful waterways, parks and recreational destinations.” As for the timing, just a week after the auto show, Cadotte said it makes sense. “You have to pick when it’s not full-on season,” he said. “It’s nice for people to be able to come out and shop before the season.”

Boutin may snag his own condo

Continued from page 5

“Most of the people are great and very nice, and I think this is a great city and there is a great future here,” Boutin noted. The developer said he likes Chatham so much he has discussed moving here with his two sons, and keeping two of the units in the condo building for his family. “I like this place. You have this nice river here, and you have also

the Great Lakes around. It’s a perfect location and there is a nice future here. I always look to the future, not the moment or the past, I look to the future,” Boutin said. Boutin and Mayor Darrin Canniff said they are planning a media event at the new condo building in the near future to give people an advance look at the completed project.

Red tape reduction The Chatham Voice

Recently, Chatham-Kent Community Development hosted a public meeting on the Continuous Improvement and Red Tape Reduction Project. The event, which had been postponed one night due to weather, was well attended Feb. 13 with a variety of community members coming out to hear updates about activities that are underway, as well as provide their input. The evening kicked off with opening comments from John Norton, general manager of Community Development, and Coun. Aaron Hall, who introduced the project and its goal of identifying new opportunities for improving Community

Development’s processes and allow for easier investment and growth across Chatham-Kent. The session then proceeded with presentations from a number of other municipal departments and included activities being taken by each department to advance their specific continuous improvement activities. Members of the public and of the Community Development Advisory Committee were invited to provide comments, questions, and input following each presentation. “It is very important that there was wholesome conversation from everyone who attended as it brought to light important points to consider as we move forward with developing our report,” said Norton in a media

of community members with different backgrounds and experiences including those from the development community, small business, and also non-profit groups. “It was an honest conversation that included both the positive and also some real challenges that people have faced,” Hall said. “We appreciate the

positive feedback, and hearing where there are bumps gives the municipality the chance to make informed change.” “Council can expect to see the report by late April or early May and we anticipate that it will identify barriers and provides solutions to remove and eliminate unnecessary red tape,” Norton said.

Grade 3 students from Bkejwanong Kinomaagewgamig, Alyssa White, Malcolm Kicknosway and Luca Kicknosway, look on while author Joanne Robertson signs copies of her book, The Water Walker, for students at the Bkejwamong First Nations Library.

For the love of water

By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com

Grade 3 students on Walpole Island had the opportunity to learn from Indigenous author Joanne Robertson as she read her latest book, The Water Walker, to students at the Bkejwanong First Nations Library recently. “The Water Walker is the story of a determined Ojibwe Grandmother (Nokomis) Jo-

sephine Mandamin and her great love for Nibi (water). Nokomis walks to raise awareness of the need to protect Nibi for future generations, and for all life on the planet. She, along with other women, men, and youth, have walked around all the Great Lakes from the four salt waters, or oceans, to Lake Superior. The walks are full of challenges, and by her example, Josephine challenges us all to take up our responsibility to

protect our water, the giver of life, and to protect our planet for all generations,” according to the book promo. The book and illustrations by Robertson, who is from Whitefish First Nation north of Sault Saint Marie, is based on the true story of Mandamin and how she began the Mother Earth Water Walks in 2003. The purpose of the walks is to draw attention to and create awareness of the importance of

the water. “The Water Walkers have walked over six million steps,” Robertson explained to the students. “I was able to participate in the walk in 2017 to raise awareness. We think we have a lot of water to drink; we live on the Great Lakes, but only a small amount of fresh water is available for us, the animals and all of nature to drink.” Robertson gave an example of one birch tree, which needs the equivalent of two bathtubs full of water each day to thrive. The author read her story to the students and then showed where the water walkers go and how far. She also showed them the pail they carry with them to represent Nibi on their long journey each year. Librarian Linda Klassens ordered a book for each student to take home with them, signed by Robertson, and said she was very pleased Robertson was able to make the trip. Continued on page 14

Pink Shirt Day 2019: putting an end to cyberbullying For many adults who were bullied in school, home was where they were free from their tormenters. Today’s kids aren’t so lucky; thanks to the phones, computers and tablets that are omnipresent in modern life, bullying can continue even when they’re in their own home. This year, the Pink Shirt Day campaign is encouraging young people to think twice before posting negative things online. WHAT IS CYBERBULLYING? Cyberbullies use social media, private messaging and online video games to send, post or share negative content about the victim. Some examples of this abuse are sharing private photos of someone with other people, spreading rumours on social media sites and via text messaging, or tricking someone into sharing information and using it against them online. WHAT YOU CAN DO The most important thing you can do to protect your children from cyberbullying is to talk to them. Be a safe haven for them, a person they can talk to without fear of judgement. With their permission, follow or “friend” them on social media so you have an idea of what they’re posting and who they’re interacting with — just don’t abuse this privilege by commenting on their posts or otherwise embarrassing them. Keep an eye on their internet use by putting your family’s computer in a high traffic area of your house. Another good practice is to charge their phones and tablets in your room at night so they don’t surf the internet when they should be sleeping. Make sure your whole family knows the importance of privacy online; never share passwords with anyone or give personal information to people online.

SIGNS YOUR CHILD IS BEING CYBERBULLIED Indicators that your child is being bullied online can include responding emotionally — with anger or sadness — to online activity, being nervous when there’s a notification on their phone or changing the amount of time they spend using their devices. You should also be on the lookout for signs of bullying like suddenly changing their peer group, avoiding school and social gatherings, not wanting to talk to you and losing interest in their hobbies. If you think your kid is being cyberbullied, ask them about it. If they are, don’t threaten to take away their devices; one of the main reasons kids don’t tell their parents they’re being abused online is the fear of not being allowed to use the internet. Find a way to deal with the situation together. You’ll need to block the bullies from your kid’s social media accounts, change all of their passwords and report the abuse to their school. SIGNS YOUR CHILD IS THE CYBERBULLY If you’ve noticed that your teen has become secretive about their online activity or hear insults or laughter while they’re chatting or texting, they may be bullying people online. If they are, you should explain to them that while they think they’re having fun, their actions are serious and may even be illegal. You may want to restrict their access to social media sites until they’ve proven that they won’t go back to harassing others. There’s no excuse for cyberbullying. Children should instead use the internet to learn, to socialize and to spread kindness.

PAGE 15

Not just child’s play:

how to spot an adult bully at work When you graduated from high school, you probably thought that your days of being bullied were behind you. Sadly, this isn’t always the case and many people continue to deal with bullies in the workplace. HOW TO IDENTIFY A BULLY AT WORK A bully will have a pattern of subtly aggressive behaviour that can include undermining your accomplishments, belittling you in meetings, ostracizing you or holding you to different standards than the rest of the office. Since people in positions of power have more of a tendency to intimidate others, your boss is the most likely bully in the office. However, bullying behaviour can also come from a co-worker or even a subordinate. WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT Document all instances of bullying in case you need to bring it to the attention of someone in a position to do something, like your boss or the human resources department. Talk to your aggressor in a calm and professional manner; they may not realize that they’re bullying or may think you’re in on the joke. If their behaviour doesn’t change, show your documentation to someone in the company who can help you. If all else fails, contact the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety at www.ccohs.ca.

How to teach your kids to stand up for others When a child is getting bullied, those who witness the situation are also involved. Talk to your kids about the following topics so they can show bullies they’re not in charge. Empathy: when they learn empathy, they’ll be able to recognize bullying. Ask them how it feels when someone’s not being nice to them and teach them that other kids can feel the same way.

Support: teach them to stand up to bullies by using simple phrases in a calm but assertive voice. Simple sentences like “you’re not being funny, you’re just mean” can go a long way. Practise a few phrases at home with your kids so they’re ready to use them if needed.

Report: kids can be afraid to tell grownups when they see bullying because they don’t want to be labelled as tattletales. Teach your kids the difference between tattling (hoping to get someone in trouble) and reporting (hoping to get someone out of trouble).

Inclusion: being included can mean a lot to a kid who’s being bullied. Encourage your kids to make an effort to include classmates who are bullied and don’t have someone who they can eat lunch with or talk to.

The most important message to leave kids with is that they have the power to make a difference and neutralize — or outright stop — bullying behaviour.

Maureen Eyres, left, care manager at the Chatham-Kent Hospice; and Jodi Maroney, executive director of the hospice foundation, stack linen at the hospice. A donation from the South Kent Wind Community Fund supports the cost of linen service at the hospice, something not covered by government funding.

Donation aids comfort at C-K Hospice The Chatham Voice

The South Kent Wind Community Fund, a donor advised fund of the Chatham Kent Community Foundation, recently approved a grant of $8,400 to support the cost of linen service for residents of Chatham-Kent Hospice. Such costs are not covered by government funding and therefore must be covered through donations. “The comfort of our residents is our top priority. The linen service ensures that there are always clean, sheets and towels available and

helps us maintain a high level of infection control,” Maureen Eyres, care manager at the hospice, said in a media release. “This generous grant is very much appreciated. We need to raise $100,000 each month in donations to cover ongoing operating expenses so this gift will help us reach that goal,” Jodi Maroney, executive director of the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation, said. Since opening the doors in April 2016, Chatham-Kent Hospice has cared for more than 567 families from across Chatham-Kent.

Still time to take part in C-K arena survey The Chatham Voice

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent has released a survey to receive resident input on a proposed arena development in Chatham that would replace or repurpose Memorial and Erickson Arenas. Residents can complete the survey online at www.surveymonkey. com/r/ChathamArena2018 until midnight on Feb. 21.

Paper copies of the survey are available at local municipal centres and Chatham-Kent arenas. Completed paper surveys should be submitted to municipal centres prior to 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 21. A public information session will be held on Feb. 28 at the Civic Centre, 315 King St. W, Chatham, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to provide additional information on this initiative. The public is encouraged to attend.

AgMedica Bioscience Inc., a licensed producer of medicinal cannabis, is pleased to announce that it has increased its existing supply and distribution arrangements to include seven Canadian provinces and territories, and the company continues to pursue further opportunities to extend its national reach. In addition to its expansive cannabis supply and distribution capabilities across Canada, AgMedica, which has facilities here in Chatham-Kent, became the youngest licensed producer in the country to achieve current Good Manufacturing Practice (“cGMP”) certification, which was realized only one year after Health Canada granted the Company its first licence to cultivate. Internationally recognized firm SGS carried out an independent third-party inspection of AgMedica’s processes and facilities against both the EU and Health Canada regulations for cGMP requirements. This certification positions AgMedica one step closer to shipping cannabis for medical purposes to the EU and other international countries.
