Unifor pledges to Hope Haven
By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
Jerry Dias, the boss of Unifor, was so impressed with the work his people had done for Hope Haven, and by the men’s shelter itself, that he pledged to pay for additional im-
provements at the facility. In town to open the kitchen, which was gutted and rebuilt by Unifor tradespeople in just eight days, Dias on Friday took a look at the rest of the basement facility and announced Unifor would buy new beds, furniture,
paint, and curtains for the place. The announcement left Wanda Bell, general manager of Hope Haven, and those around her briefly stunned. “It takes a lot of love to work in a shelter,” Dias said, thanking the volun-
teers and organizers for working to help the less fortunate. “We would hope in 2020 we wouldn’t need shelters. But that’s not the reality.” Dias and other Unifor brass visited Hope Haven, located in the basement of New Beginning
Ministries on Wellington Street in Chatham, to see the handiwork on Feb. 21 by their tradespeople. They were impressed by the improvements in the kitchen, which featured new more spacious cabinets and other upgrades. Dias said the tradesmen
of Unifor are good at what they do, and like to give back. “The tradesmen really make a difference. As an organization, we understand our sense of responsibility and sense of community,” he said.

Jerry Dias, national president for Unifor, and Wanda Bell, general manager for Hope Haven men’s shelter, cut the ribbon to officially open the shelter’s revamped kitchen on Feb. 21. Volunteer tradesmen from Unifor gutted and rebuilt the kitchen in just eight days.

“We work in the communities in which we live. It’s our responsibility to give back.” Bell said she appreciates the effort. “Many worked on their
own time to complete this. It got done so quickly,” she said. “We are so thankful and eternally grateful.” Shortly after the ribbon cutting, Dias looked out at the rest of Hope Haven, which
has beds for about a dozen men, and decided at that point that Unifor was going to upgrade the beds, furniture and decor. “We’re going to do it right,” he said.

Hike for Hospice returns May 3 level of support. “Every single member of the municipality is touched by the hospice. It’s a free service for any family,” he said. “A lot of people don’t realize that. Most of what is done is through fundraising.” The hospice provides end-of-life care for loved ones, providing a place for people to die with dignity with supports in place for the family as well as the loved one. The supportive nature of Chatham-Kent impresses McKinlay. “We’re a pretty good community that way, and people underestimate the generosity of Chatham-Kent,” he said. “C-K as a whole really came together on this (hospice) project.” There will be a few changes for this year’s event, McKinlay said, including some entertainment before the Hike, as well as a beefed up corporate challenge. “The Corporate Challenge is a great way for colleagues to bond as a team- working towards a goal and spending some social time together for a great cause that everyone can relate to. The top corporate team will be recognized at the Hike with the coveted Hike for Hospice trophy and enjoy a coffee break reception at their workplace,” shared Amanda McKinlay, event co-chair. The fun run will be offered again as well.

A sign that spring is just around the corner, the Chatham-Kent Hospice has announced the date for this year’s Hike for Hospice, May 3. The event returns to Mud Creek Trail near John McGregor School. This is the event’s fourth year. The hike is a family-friendly and accessible event with strollers, walkers and wheelchairs welcome on this pet-friendly trail. With multiple trail lengths to choose from, people of all fitness levels will enjoy the afternoon. Event co-organizer Nathan McKinlay said it could be hard to top last year’s event, which he says had more than 900 people show up and raise in excess of $145,000 for the hospice. “We had a lot of day-of support. The sheer number of people wasn’t predicted by us. We were obviously very impressed and very surprised,” he said. “It’s going to be hard to maintain that level of expectation.” The weather, which delivered a gorgeous day for walking last year, does play a role. The Hike raised $58,000 its first year in 2017 and $60,000 the next year, before the massive uptick last year. McKinlay said the impact of the hospice is widespread, hence the
A participating family enjoys the outdoors hiking along Mud Creek Trail at the 2019 Hike for Hospice.
“People can hike or participate in the fun run. And people who aren’t able to make it there can do a virtual run. You can do that anywhere and still get recognition for it,” Nathan McKinlay said. He added the hike in some ways is an extension of the hospice community. “A sense of community is what is built through
the hospice. The nice thing about the hike is you bring hundreds of people together with a common thread that connects everyone,” he said. “For the most part, everyone there will have lost someone.” With that reality in mind, there is a quiet reflection period during the hike, where participants walk in silence in memory of
those lost loved ones. Participants can also tie a ribbon on the memory wall for the hike, and write the name of a loved one on their T-shirts. “We find a lot of families come together with the memory of one person. This is a nice opportunity to come together to do something active out in nature,” McKinlay said. Participants can sign up

Do you have a security camera? The Chatham Voice
Private home security is a priority for residents in Chatham-Kent. This, combined with population growth, has led to an increasing number of residential video surveillance cameras being installed at private resi-
dences. And now Chatham-Kent police would love to know if you own one. Home security cameras are an effective crime prevention tools that also assist in solving crime. These benefits extend beyond the home to include the community, police
say. Officers will often contact homeowners to inquire about video surveillance while investigating a crime that has occurred elsewhere in the neighbourhood. The Security Camera Registry is a community-based crime preven-
tion opportunity and investigative resource that enlists the help of Chatham-Kent residents. This registry enables community members to voluntarily identify their residential video surveillance location through a simple, secure, confidential, online form located
on the Chatham-Kent Police Service website, according to police. Identified addresses will be mapped on a database of surveillance camera locations for officers to quickly and effectively direct resources when investigating criminal offences in your neighbour-
hood. Police say participation in this program can deter and prevent crime, and save lives. For more information or to register your security camera, please visit http://ckpolice.com/ camera-registry/

Friends Gathering hopes to top $5K By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com
The idea of enjoying time with your friends instead of meeting at funerals is one that resonates with a lot of people. The trio behind the Gathering of Friends Chatham-Kent – Ray O’Phee, Howard Morton and Mike Dorner – is hosting the third annual event March 7 at the KBD Club on Byng Avenue, raising money for the Chatham Hospice. Admission is no charge with freewill offerings accepted for the hospice. The three men have
known each other since elementary school and connected at the celebration of life of their mutual friend Brent Preston about three years ago. Happy to see each other, the trio noted that it’s too bad they only saw each other when a mutual friend has passed, and the first Gathering was born. The idea came from a wish that friends should enjoy each other and make an effort to get together while they are still able to enjoy each other’s company. “Everyone is invited. It doesn’t just have to be

people we knew in high school. If you are new to Chatham and want to make new friends, come on out,” O’Phee noted. O’Phee said while their friend Brent was in the C-K Hospice, they were impressed with how the
staff took care of him and his family, allowing him to die with dignity in a caring and supportive atmosphere. That is why the money raised by the Gathering event goes to hospice. Dorner said the group

raised $2,000 its first year, $4,200 last year and they would be thrilled to hit the $5,000 mark this year. He added there would be loads of door prizes, live entertainment, a cash bar and food and everyone is welcome.
“The first year we had 300 people and last year, 500 people from every walk of life. Everyone knows everyone,” Dorner said. “People come from pretty far away to be here. The response has been just incredible.”

Support for hospice Chatham-Kent is a community that rallies behind good causes, but there has been no project that has garnered more local support than the Chatham-Kent Hospice. Since its inception, the concept of the hospice experience that allows people to die with dignity and in comfort with their loved ones around them, has been well received. Fundraising dollars flowed in, as did volunteers and compassionate, trained hospice workers and in what seemed like no time, the C-K Hospice was accepting its first palliative patients. That community support for the hospice continues today, with continual fundraisers and praise from family and friends with loved ones living their final days surrounded by compassion and unconditional love. The Hike for Hospice, coming up May 3, is an annual event that raises incredible amounts, and as organizer Nathan McKinley said, it continues to grow and evolve with community support. The Gathering of Friends – Chatham-Kent is also an organically grown event that was inspired by men who visited their friend in hospice and were amazed by the love and care he was shown in his final days. That fundraising event is coming up March 7 at the KBD Club and it also continues to grow, with more money raised each year from freewill offerings. These two coming events are just a sampling of the community support for our hospice and the incredible board and staff who run it. Knowing there is a place your loved one can go, where you just spend time with them without being the caregiver, is an incredible gift during a very difficult time. If you can, join the hike as an individual, a family or a corporate group, go the Gathering of Friends and enjoy the people in your life while you are alive to do so, and keep an important community asset like the hospice running. Funds raised are the lifeblood of C-K Hospice and it is a support that everyone will eventually need. We all will die some time, and the fact we have a place like hospice to be there for us and make our last days comfortable, is a tremendous gift to our community.

End the blockades now: Chamber Editor’s Note: This letter is addressed to Rick Nicholls, MPP for Chatham-Kent-Leamington, but it was also sent to Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton, C-K-L MP Dave Epp and L-K-M MP Lianne Rood. It was sent last week during the height of the First Nation blockades. Sir: We, the Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce, representing employers and commerce in your community, are writing to you regarding the blockades occurring across Canada to ask you to work with the provinc-
es and law enforcement agencies to bring an end to the ongoing disruptions of public services and particularly to restore all rail services immediately. In addition to preventing access to public transportation for tens of thousands of individual Canadians, these disruptions severely limit the movement of perishable foods and other consumer items, grain, construction materials and propane for Quebec and Atlantic Canada. We are deeply concerned about the damage to the
Canadian economy, the unfair denial of access to transportation services for Canadian citizens, and the undermining of the rule of law. These illegal blockades, which also affect the movement of natural resources like timber, aluminum, coal and oil, will take an increasing toll if the government does not act decisively to restore order. Factories and mines may soon face difficult decisions about their ability to continue operations, and the damage to Canadian supply chains will extend beyond
our borders and harm our reputation as a stable partner in international trade. A rail disruption of this magnitude constitutes an emergency for the Canadian economy. On behalf of the 350 businesses represented by the Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce, and the many businesses of Chatham-Kent beyond our membership, we urge the government to act without further delay. Gail Hundt President & CEO Chatham-Kent Chamber of Commerce
It is about the money, reader says Sir: Every time I hear that union guy say that compensation is not the root cause of the teachers’ strike, I can’t help but laugh hysterically. If the union leaders are so dead set on the argument that the sole reason for escalations is
not in fact compensation, why are they taking the government to court to fight for more money? These teachers make $100,000 per year, is that not enough? That is more money than most of our
first responders make. It’s not like they are out here saving lives all day. It does not make sense. Do they not realize that they are the ones who are making themselves look bad?
They are blatantly lying to their members, and members of the public as they play the victim card yet again. Unbelievable. Pete Mercer Chatham

Indoor Auto Show back March 6-8 Ten Chatham dealers, no pressure sales, all under one roof at Bradley Centre
By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
Anticipation is building for the 10th annual Chatham Indoor Car Show, set for March 6-8 at the Bradley Centre in Chatham. The show, put on by the Chatham Auto Dealers Association, offers a onestop shopping experience for potential car buyers,
out of the elements. Ten local dealerships will showcase their 2020 models at the show. Nick Cadotte, one of the event organizers for XS Productions, said the event allows people to gather information on various vehicles. “I think the no-press sales approach is appealing. Just come out and see what Chatham dealers
have to offer. It’s a friendly environment,” he said. “You can check them out and can compare. For example, if you are looking at SUVS, there will be a few of them in the room. The evolution of churches The Chatham Voice
A leading Canadian researcher on church growth will be sharing his findings at a workshop Feb. 29 at Thames Christian Fellowship Church, 400 Park Ave. E. in Chatham. Professor David Haskell from the University of Waterloo will present his research, titled Why Churches Grow
or Don’t Grow, on church growth and decline, new member recruitment and retention of youth. Haskell has studies published in the world’s top journals and has been reported on by the Washington Post, Guardian (UK), Maclean’s and Globe & Mail. In his workshop, he will discuss what the empirical evidence shows to be the “best recipe
for church growth.” The workshop is open to church leaders, as well as the general public and runs from 8:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Organizers ask that people register at www.thameschristianfellowship.com, but all will be welcome at the door. All church denominations are welcome, with 15 different representative church leaders in attendance.

Public input delays bridge decision The Chatham Voice
As a result of the overwhelming amount of comments and feedback received through e-mails, social media, participation in the online survey as well as attendance at the recent Public

to council for this project, the report is being pushed to the April 27 council meeting. Additionally, the online survey is being extended to Feb. 28. This survey can be found at www.surveymonkey.com/r/SydenhamBridges2020

Locally based Internet provider TekSavvy recently announced it’s teaming up with Ericsson to upgrade and expand TekSavvy’s existing rural Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network and services. Using Ericsson Radio System radio, transport and Cloud Core network technology, the partnership will provide several rural communities within the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, as well as Elgin, Lambton and Middlesex counties with bestin-class broadband solutions. TekSavvy’s existing rural broadband network stretches from Chatham-Kent in the South, Belle River in the West, and as far as Dutton & Wallacetown in the East, according to corporate officials. Reaching
North, TekSavvy’s SkyFi service is available in a large part of both Middlesex and Lambton counties. TekSavvy will use Ericsson Radio System hardware and software to modernize its existing FWA network. Ericsson will also provide TekSavvy with Cloud Core solution including cloud infrastructure and advanced microwave links that can provide a smooth future evolution to 5G. The first phase of the partnership will focus on reaching underserved rural consumers that currently do not have access to a reasonably priced broadband alternative, TekSavvy officials said. High energy at blues show We finally managed to get to a Canada South Blues Society (CSBS) event recently, and we certainly weren’t disappointed. The Cash Box Kings left it all on the stage. In fact, co-frontman Oscar Wilson left some of it on the dance floor, as he sang several songs from in front of the stage and patrons danced around him. The Chatham Voice is a sponsor of CSBS events in Chatham and several of us from work, along with friends Pete and Arlene, attended Feb. 15’s show at the Kent Belgium Dutch Club on Byng Avenue in town. We got delayed and arrived only a few minutes before the start of the show. That was a mistake, as the parking lot was full, as was the venue. There were a smattering of seats available throughout the hall, but CSBS board member Aug Polowick managed to find us a spot to sit together. We and about 275 other folks
Bruce Corcoran filled the hall to enjoy the classic blues stylings of the Cash Box Kings. Wilson, even though he was fighting a stomach bug, delivered huge vocals, performing classics such as “The Thrill is Gone,” as well as Cash Box King originals galore. They ended the night with “Mustang Sally.” You could not see Wilson as he belted it out just in front of the stage, as patrons flocked to the dance floor. For anyone who enjoys the blues, this was the place to be. Wilson grew up in a very tough neighbourhood in Chica-

go. The veteran bluesman sings from his soul and through his experiences. Co-frontman Joe Nosek, who handles a good portion of the singing duties, and really stands out on harmonica, had energy to spare where the ill
Wilson did not. His stomping style while playing reminded me of a young Dan Aykroyd in the original Blues Brothers. These guys entertained for
two long sets, offering some great slide and lead guitar work, as well as that sizzling harmonica and earthy vocals.

Music! It is undeniably a universal language. Throughout our history, music has been an accompaniment to our spirit, what we see, think, hear and act upon. Being involved with music all my life has led to many influential experiences. As a boy at the age of eight I began playing music by ear; with my first instrument being trumpet, then acoustic guitar, but most enjoyable were the drums. I went on to study musical theory for six years while playing with local groups. Reading and writing played a major role as I became part of a professional group travelling across all of Ontario and parts of Quebec for three years. One of the members of the band was a graduate of the Juilliard School of Arts as a pianist. He came to help us understand true harmonies and the fluctuation of timing with either instruments or vocals. Music underscored many chapters in my life. I was able to experience playing with a gentleman out of Detroit, Mich. who wrote all of the horn charts for the Motown Era in the recording studios. I have also had the opportunity to perform on a television show out of Quebec, as well as studio work and radio shows. Charity events also played a big role for us in many of our venues. The highlight was being invited to perform for the premiere of the CMA awards in Hamilton one year. My history in music has come full circle to the present, being a family member working for McKinlay Funeral Home. For the families who come to us, the music selection that they have requested or that we have suggested touches on all of the senses. SPIRITUAL: A sense of calming and joy. SIGHT: Maybe a PLACE that brings to mind a song that your loved one was fond of. THOUGHT: A MEMORY for the family of a function that had taken place with a celebration of his or her favourite music. SOUND: A certain song has come across the radio that takes you back to being with your loved one. ACTING UPON: A RALLY or CELEBRATION of music that has taken place maybe in dance or at a concert, and for a brief moment once again you are celebrating the memory of your loved one. You cannot escape the music. Music always touches our heart in one way or another, always meaningful and heartfelt. There is a focus in each one of us at McKinlay‘s that takes pride in the personal touch that we give to help you with your wishes and personal selections of music for that moment in time. I am Kim Pidgeon, asking you to pick your song, dance a little and hum a tune.

We left impressed, and realizing how underappreciated the blues are around here. I caught Sue Foley years ago when she came through town and played at the Cultural Centre. Great Canadian blues artist and devoted fan of old-school blues in her own right. I’ve popped into the Shrewsbury Ribs N Blues Fest to take photos in the past, but haven’t stayed. Others are smarter then I am. Many are members of CSBS. They are a pretty dedicated bunch whose organization brings in top-
shelf blues performers to Windsor and Chatham. If you like the blues, I’d urge you to check out the society’s shows. Better yet, become a member. It’s $25 for the year, and that gives you $10 off each show. There are still four shows left in the year. CSBS folks told us it’s thanks to the dedicated membership, and sponsors such as The Voice, that they can manage to bring in such quality acts. For more information, visit http://www.bluessociety.ca/
OFSAA volleyball coming to Chatham The Chatham Voice
Chatham-Kent Secondary School will play host to the AAA girls’ OFSAA volleyball championships next month. Matches will take place at CKSS and the St. Clair College Healthplex from March 9-11, with the final day of games taking place at the Healthplex. Sixteen teams from across Ontario will be in participating in the tournament. There will be 300 athletes
and coaches attending this tournament along with family and friends. It has been more than a decade since CKSS has hosted girls’ OFSAA volleyball. Mike and Elish Smith, co-convenors, are “excited to give the senior girls at CKSS an OFSAA experience but also wanted to showcase the whole CKSS community and the talents that the students and staff have. Our community has simply been amazing in their support of this event – specifically TekSavvy and St. Clair College for their generous donations.” Tickets can be purchased at CKSS or the Healthplex during tournament play. The first serve is at 9 a.m. on March 9 at both locations. Ticket prices are: Tournament Pass, $20; Day Pass, $10; Student/Seniors Day Pass, $5; Children under 13, free.
