Rob Myers, Chatham-Kent’s automotive legend, is encouraging classic car chaos in Chatham June 21 and 22. Myers, the main force behind RM/Sotheby’s,

wants to see thousands of classic cars converge on the downtown core on the third weekend in June to celebrate the 40th anniversary of RM/Sotheby’s and take part in RetroFest. He encourages anyone who owns a classic car to

cludes the Sam Roberts Band and some priceless automotive art pieces. Meghan McGrail, director of public relations for RM/Sotheby’s, said 2019 marks four decades in the collector car business for RM, which began as a two-man operation out of

Myers’ garage. Myers said today RM/ Sotheby’s is the world largest classic car auction house. Organizers of RetroFest, the annual classic car weekend, shifted back into June from their normal end-of-May timing

to link arms with the RM/Sotheby’s festivities. Fannie Vavoulis, chair of the 40th anniversary event, said she appreciated how willing the RetroFest folks were to move their weekend. Continued on page 3

Cyber Pack ready By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com

Are you ready to blast off? The CK Cyber Pack is nearing completion of its six-week robot build for this year’s FIRST robotics competition. This year’s game is Destination Deep Space, and will have the CK Cyber Pack and teams from around the globe working in alliances of three to place hatch panels on their rockets and cargo ships. Teams will also load balls into cargo areas to earn points. “Our robot will be able to pick up balls and load them into two different levels. We will also be able to pull hatch panels from

a wall chute and pick them up off the ground,” said Matthew Sterling, Grade 11 student and robot build team lead. “In the last 30 seconds of the game, robots are to return to their ‘habitat,’ which has three different levels. Our robot transforms into a ramp, enabling another robot to be able to drive on top of us to a 19-inch tall platform. We also have special wheels called mecanum wheels that allow the robot to move in all directions, including side to side.” On Feb. 19, teams across the globe were asked to “bag and tag” their robots and are unable to touch or make further changes to their robots until com-

petition. The CK Cyber Pack will compete in two district events this year at the University of Windsor in March and Western University in early April. Successful teams move onto the Ontario Provincial Championship in Mississauga and have the chance to move onto the World Championships in Detroit in late April. The Cyber Pack is now in its fifth year and has learned a lot, thanks to mentors in the community. The team is eager and excited for this year’s competition. After the robot is locked up, work does not cease. The programming team will still continue to work on robot code, trying to

Rob Myers, chairman and CEO of RM Sotheby’s, right, discusses plans for the organization’s 40th anniversary weekend in June in Chatham, which will feature the Sam Roberts Band, some unique vehicles on display, and more. With him is Mayor Darrin Canniff.

“I’m going to put my arm around some of my friends,” he said, to encourage them to showcase some of their special pieces in their vehicle collections. “Some of the cars that will be on display, you will never see

again. These are automotive pieces of art.” Some of the pieces RM/ Sotheby’s will put on display include multiple Batmobiles and the Flintstones car. Plus, Myers has something different planned – two life-size

mechanical elephants. He said they are from the 1940 World’s Fair and should draw attention as they walk down the street. The display area will be a ticketed venue as well, with proceeds going to

the Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent. And on the Saturday night, there will be a concert in the Chatham Capitol Theatre. RM/Sotheby’s personnel refuse to divulge the band.

sic cars on display to the point they are overflowing the downtown core, and that traffic is congested with people flocking here to have a look and take part in the fun. “I like chaotic. It’s fun. You’ve got to have stuff going on everywhere,” he said. Myers said RM/Sotheby’s will also bring celebrity judges for the RetroFest show and will provide cash prizes as well. Mayor Darrin Canniff said Myers’ desire for a big blowout bash in the downtown core is infectious. “Rob thinks big and he’s humble. We’re going to be talking about this for the next 40 years,” he said of the June 21-22 event. “I’m confident we’ll have more people in downtown Chatham than ever before.” Myers said he couldn’t imagine the 40th anniversary celebrations taking place anywhere but here. “I’m a true believer in this area. We have 20-30 of the finest craftsmen in the world working here for us,” he said. “It’s all about the people who work with you.” With that in mind, Myers said the event will offer RM/Sotheby’s staff, more than 100 of whom work here, a chance to celebrate their years of hard work.

Bruce Corcoran/The Chatham Voice

RM/Sotheby’s will celebrate its 40th anniversary in Chatham with a big classic car weekend.

“This will let our folks enjoy the fruits of their labour,” he said. Myers is no stranger to supporting local charities. Funds raised during the 25th anniversary event helped build the Chatham Skate Park on Grand Avenue West, he said. And this time around, the three targeted charities just make sense for Myers. He said he visited the Chatham-Kent Hospice when a friend spent his

final days there and was impressed with the compassion inside the facility. “What a wonderful place,” he said. As for the Children’s Treatment Centre, Myers said he’s long been a supporter of youth, and is impressed by the reach of the centre to help so many kids. “They do great things there. My wife and I are going to donate to the Children’s Treatment Cen-

tre too and help get the new one built,” he said. The CKHA will benefit two-fold from RM/Sotheby’s events. There is the Sam Roberts Band concert during the 40th anniversary event, and Myers added he’s encouraging some high profile friends to donate items for a special auction at an event in Monterrey, Calif., with the funds raised returning here to support the CKHA.

Accessibility celebrated

By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

A pair of local businesses received high praise from the Chatham-Kent Accessibility Advisory Committee recently. As part of the 2019 Accessibility Awards, Sons of Kent Brewing Company and the Mac’s Convenience Store on the corner of Sandys Street and McNaughton Avenue West were honoured. Sons of Kent earned the Dr. Veronica Vaughan Accessible Business of the Year Award, while Mac’s earned the Sheila Lindsey-Powers Accessibility Advocate Award. Mike Girard, chair of the C-K Accessibility Advisory Committee, said the efforts by these businesses are appreciated. “All have worked very hard to advocate for accessibility. We recognize and reward very important people and businesses in our community,” he said.

Doug Hunter, one of the partners behind Sons of Kent, said they made a conscious effort in their design of their operation to think about minimizing accessibility issues. “We wanted to make sure everyone can get in and out of here. We have high- and low-level tables to provide accessibility as well,” he said. Rick LaMarsh, former chair of the advisory committee, said Naveed Pasha, owner of the Mac’s store, has gone to great effort to improve accessibility to the store by putting in an automatic door and designed access to the interior with everyone in mind. “It’s the only automatic door I’ve found on a convenience store in Chatham. As well, some doors are too narrow for wheelchair access and others have steps,” he said. “When I encounter a business like this, I feel more comfortable and I’m willing to spend more money.” LaMarsh said he’s not alone,

as others with ability issues make use of the Mac’s due to its accessibility efforts. Gerard said Pasha didn’t have to do the renovations to improve accessibility, but did so anyway. “Mac’s is now the go-to place for people with accessibility issues,” he said, adding it’s paying off. “They’ve noticed a trend from clientele as business has increased as a result.” Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff said efforts by businesses such as Mac’s and Sons of Kent are appreciated. “I would love to see every business completely accessible,” he said. “Thanks for doing what you’re doing.” Juanita Luxton also received an award from the C-K Accessibility Advisory Committee, the Sid Ebare Perseverance Award. Ann McKenzie of the Children’s Treatment Centre presented the award. She said Luxton is an outstanding

Ramped up RetroFest What do Sam Roberts, the Batmobile and mechanical elephants have in common? They will all be in Chatham June 21 and 22 for the combined RetroFest/RM Sotheby’s 40th anniversary celebration. For people who love RetroFest, there will be the same Kent Historic Auto Club Cruise on the Friday night, and the varied display of vintage vehicles downtown on the Saturday, with activities for families in the park and lots to see and do. The Saturday showcase will very likely be larger than ever as car lovers will motor into town to take part in this special weekend. But add in Rob Myers and his crew, and RetroFest is being amped up to a celebration Chatham hasn’t seen in a long time. Added to RetroFest is the Sam Roberts Band in concert, a rare vintage car parade and display, with some celebrities and auto aficionados bringing them into town, tours of RM where staff work their magic to restore incredible cars and a special display where mechanical elephants and other rare sights can be seen. Three of the added features, over and above the regular RetroFest free activities, will require tickets with the funds going to three different charities in Chatham that makes the event a win/win for everyone in the community. The people who are worried RetroFest won’t be the same are right in a way. It won’t be the same; it will be even better. The fact Myers wants to include the community, including car lovers just like him, in his 40th anniversary celebration shows what an incredible asset he and his family are to our community. RM Sotheby’s has put Chatham-Kent on the map, as has the restoration work people come from far and wide to entrust to Myers and his staff. The Retro Suites Hotel is making its own mark as a unique and fun boutique hotel. The downtown is slowly transforming its derelict buildings into showpieces thanks to the efforts of people like Myers, the Warrener family and the Naclerios. Add to that all the mom and pop businesses that have worked year after year to keep their stores looking good and offering shopping variety to the public, and downtown Chatham is set to have the best summer ever.

Opinion

Let the Boutins proceed Sir: The Feb. 21 Chatham Voice editorial “Enough Dislike,” in my opinion, is laser accurate respecting the major downtown Victor Boutin developments. Although it has taken longer than hoped, nonetheless, the downtown condo, when completed, will be a major ingredient toward creating a self-sustaining downtown. I know from personal experience with some Toronto investors C-K is looked upon as a joke, creating an insecure investment environment (using their terminology). The Boutin family from my understanding undertook the condo project more as a personal family investment. I’m not out to defend the Boutin family. I’m looking at things from an investment portfolio, a strategy to advantage the Boutin investment for our advantage. I believe it’s still going to

be two or three years before the Boardwalk on Thames condo is complete. So what? At this point, it’s better than not having it. I know a laundry list of things that could happen causing the Condo project to back fire, however, another laundry list supports an investment catalyst to this project, creating a “must” ingredient to support an ultimate self-sustaining downtown. It is imperative our Economic Development Department and our chief administrative personnel know how to advantage this project and understand how to fast-forward to use these investments as a foundation creating that self-sustaining downtown core. If, and I mean “if,” Boutin feels by completing the old YMCA project,

and I think it’s wise of him to do that first, in that, it’s faster and less expensive to get that project done and money rolling in, the cash then applied to the condo project, then I support that direction. The condo project, when completed, can become a skyline for Chatham-Kent, which will greatly assist our C-K marketing department to feature in brochures and on the C-K website. Such shows growth or leaves a first impression or perception of growth. Without the condo project, we can’t show or convince the outside world Chatham-Kent is growing. Pictures convince. Talk is cheap. The 10-storey complex, housing ground-level retail shops and a builtin population of 200 or so, can be a tremendous

ingredient to explode downtown as its own living and shopping village. Further, that, combined with tri-lateral zoning to accommodate personal living, office, retail/ professional corporation etc., can only be achieved by creating an asset and net value windfall for investors. Once our downtown is developed that way (having its own permanent population) such then warrants a small grocery store then expanding from there. It would be a huge income asset, by creating a new tax base from a completed downtown retail/commercial/professional/residential type of community hub. Let the Boutin group do what they need to do. Home sales, prices up in January The Chatham Voice

January was a hot month at least for real estate sales in Chatham-Kent, as sales rose more than 55 per cent from January 2018. According to the Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors, 73 units changed hands in January. “Home sales came flying out of the gate to begin 2019, with January sales actually building even further on December’s big gain,” said Steve Carroll, president of the Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors, in a media release. “It was the second-best January sales figure

on record, behind the year 2007; however, unlike in December there was no accompanying jump in new listings in January. With more of that activity coming out of existing inventory, overall supply and the number of months of inventory are testing fresh all-time lows, which means it could be another big year for home prices in the region.” The average price of homes sold in January 2019 was $216,704, jumping 23.1 per cent from January 2018. There were 96 new residential listings in January 2019. While this was an increase of 10.3 per cent (nine listings) on a year-over-year basis,

it was still one of the lowest levels on record for the month. Active residential listings numbered just 182 units at the end of January – a record low for this time of the year. It was down nine per cent from the end of January 2018. Months of inventory numbered just 2.5 at the end of January 2019, down from the 4.3 months recorded at the end of January 2018 and a record low for this time of year. The number of months of inventory is the number of months it would take to sell current inventories at the current rate of sales activity.

Provincial coin for ’Burg hospital The Chatham Voice

The Ontario government is investing in the Wallaceburg hospital site redevelopment to help patients and families in Chatham-Kent get the health care they need, closer to home, Infrastructure Minister Monte McNaughton announced recently.

“Fourteen years ago when this hospital was at risk of being shut down, I was one of the many people who rallied in support,” said McNaughton, who made the announcement on behalf the Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. Continued on page 11

Cash will aid design plans

Continued from page 10

“I feel privileged to return and deliver a message on behalf of the Premier Doug Ford Government: We care about the people in Southwestern Ontario who rely on this hospital for urgent care.” The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance is receiv-

ing a $500,000 planning grant to assist in early planning work to modernize the aging Wallaceburg site. The remodeled hospital will give patients faster access to a wide range of services including proposed upgrades to emergency, ambulatory and outpatient services.

“The people have told us that redeveloping the Wallaceburg site is a priority, and we are listening,” said McNaughton. “This planning grant will allow us to reimagine a new Wallaceburg hospital for the future. This is great news for people in rural Southwestern Ontario.”

“The Wallaceburg Site of Chatham-Kent Health Alliance provides essential health-care services for the communities of Wallaceburg, Walpole Island First Nation and surrounding areas,” said Lori Marshall, President and CEO, Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

Get the facts before you react, please There are certain things that journalists love to see, no matter what medium from which you might be sharing news. One is that a story you write informs the Mary Beth public on a topic in which they might or should have interest. It’s great to hear feedback from people that they learned something about their community they didn’t know by reading a local paper or listening to a local radio station. Two would be that a story you write generates a public debate that brings great points and ideas out to people who need to hear them, like our elected officials or community and business leaders. It’s the best feeling in the world to be a part of moving the community forward through respectful discussion and debate and action. You know what most legitimate journalists don’t like? When people don’t even take the time to read a story and then go on a social media tirade worthy of a cranky toddler high on sugar. Attacking a person’s character, insulting them and swearing at them is no way to make your point in a way that people will listen. If you have a beef with someone, is it too much to ask that you at least have your facts close to straight before sounding off? As an opinionated person, I love a good debate with someone who

is armed with facts and knowledge other than the blanket statements people with no clue cling to in what should be a civil discussion. I have certain topics Corcoran myself that set me off and I could go on all night talking about. And yes, sometimes it devolves into me stubbornly refusing to admit the other person has a point. But I will concede well-made, educated points to a person who has also done their homework better than I have. Whether it’s a debate on the Boardwalk on Thames building, the tax hike, council’s pay raise, changes to RetroFest, homelessness – taking to social media to crap on everybody involved is getting tiresome for those of us who have to read it every day. The negative people who complain about almost everything, spreading misinformation and hate like a bad fungus, need a new hobby. Or at least take the time to read up on the issue and if you still hate it and everyone involved, at least then you’re an informed complainer. And please stop getting angry with people who are trying to be positive. You don’t like to be criticized for being negative? Well, give the same respect to people who are trying to effect and support positive change in our community.

Accessible gallery celebrated The Chatham Voice

The Art and Heirloom Shoppe, a showcase for area artists, is celebrating its first anniversary on March 2. Located at 159 King St. W. in Chatham, the shop houses a wide selection of unique pieces from 30 local and regional artists. Owners Sue Rumball and Chris Ford will be on hand to welcome people and mark the celebration with a special one-year anniversary viewing. “This first year has been really wonderful for us and we have proven the need for an accessible gallery to sell and exhibit all of the talent in southwestern Ontario,” said Ford. “Our customers are coming from near and far to see the contents of this gallery. It’s the really amazing work that keeps them coming back.” The store offers customers a wide range of artwork including pottery,

paintings, pen and ink designs, and photography. As part of the seasonal refresh, the store has restocked the walls and shelves with new pieces from a collection of familiar and upand-coming local talent. “The Art and Heirloom Shoppe is an outstanding business that is doing fantastic work supporting local artists from across Chatham-Kent,” said Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff. “By providing our artists with a space to display and sell their works, they are raising the profiles

of some of our community’s top talent.” In addition to being the owners of the Art and Heirloom Shoppe, Rumball and Ford are also artists. Rumball is a jewelry artist and Ford works in mixed media. Some of their artistic works will be available on-site for the anniversary event. You can visit the Art and Heirloom Shoppe weekly, Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Shop online at at www.artandheirloomshoppe.ca.

Caring about community Continued from page 12

The more people who come to the community because they like our positive vibe, the more they shop in our stores, the more our businesses thrive and more jobs there are to serve those people. I have never heard a person say, “Oh look, those people in Chatham-Kent really hate their community and almost everything and everyone in it; let’s move there or invest money there, or move our business there.” The positive people are the doers and that doesn’t mean we all wear rose-coloured glasses. It means we care about our community and its potential to be great for everyone, because when our community thrives, so do its residents. Can we all agree on that at least?

It’s true. Your car problems won’t just melt away.

Maintenance Offer* Spring - Summer

When your vehicle develops a specific problem, it is not always easy to find the right person to fix it. This can be aggravating, especially if it’s a transmission problem, faulty suspension, or a misaligned car. So, where should you go to get it fixed? The first thing to do is to talk about your problem with your own personal mechanic. He or she will be the best person to direct you to the best shop they know. If you want to deal with the matter yourself, the best thing to do is to ask your friends for recommendations. If the results do not please you, you might want to consult your local paper to find some shops to talk to. Good business owners do advertise in such publications because they want to serve their own communities first. Chances are you will make friends with such people and get great service.

Nissan Murano has mass appeal The Chatham Voice

The Nissan Murano remains a hot ticket here in Chatham-Kent. Craig Bullen, general manager at Chatham Nissan, said the Murano is the second-best selling vehicle at the dealership, behind the sporty and compact Nissan Rogue. He sees the Murano’s success in its mass appeal. “It’s the design; Nissan’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive System, great overall comfort and superb value for your dollar,” Bullen said. “It has very comfortable seating for long drives.” He added that 95 per cent of the Muranos sold by Chatham Nissan are the all-wheel drive ver-

sion, perfect for facing the variable winters Mother Nature throws at us here in Chatham-Kent. Just because the weather varies here in Chatham-Kent doesn’t mean the smoothness of your ride has to. The second you pull away, the available Nissan Intelligent All-Wheel Drive System turns on, delivering power to both front and rear wheels for improved grip. Once you’re up to speed, Murano’s All-Wheel Drive efficiently sends the power all up front, and compensates around corners by intuitively transferring power between wheels for enhanced control and traction. Premium comes standard with the 2019 Mu-

rano. The interior will remind you of the most comfortable room in your home, and the ultra-modern open concept interior inspires conversation. Passengers ride in fullsized, reclining seats. There is a host of options to choose from, Bullen said, with popular choices that include blindspot warning system, intelligent cruise control,

the new 2019 Mazda 3. Joining an impressive line-up of models, the newest Mazda 3 is better than ever with an end product that cannot be found elsewhere. “We’re looking at a car

that is on the luxury brand level at a standard import price,” said new and used car manager Scott Aarssen. With its sleek design and dramatic styling, the Mazda 3 has an unprece-

dented level of craftsmanship that Aarssen says is “literally second-to-none” and is easily reflected in its interior and exterior finish. “It’s a refinement to the most awarded car in Ca-

nadian history. There’s been no other car in its segment that has won more awards than the Mazda 3,” said Aarssen referring to its numerous awards over the years, including its 2018 Small Car Award from the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). For the first time ever, the Mazda 3 will offer more control with an allwheel drive system, perfect for those times when weather and road condiGET 0% PURCHASE FINANCING SELECT tions canON change. Another exciting feature for audiophiles is the premium Bose surround sound system. Combined with the quietest cabin ever, Bose and Mazda have again partnered to offer drivers with an experience to remember. “Bose is unique with Mazda in that they craft the sound for the interior John/Jane Doe of the specific car. No other car company does that Contributed image and that sound system will never sound any bet-

ter anywhere else in the world than in the inside of that car,” said Aarssen. “It’s another testament to the level of craftsmanship that Mazda focuses on and the attention to detail. You’re not going to find another import brand at this price point that does what we do.” Standard on all new models and unique to Mazda is its Unlimited Mileage Warranty bringing a peace of mind to their customers, which 2014 MODELS includes 3- year vehicle coverage, 3-year roadside assistance, 5-year powertrain warranty and 7-year anti-perforation warranty. Aside from providing a great vehicle and warranty, making each customer feel important while providing great customer service is part of Chatham Mazda’s everyday goal. “We want you to feel warm and welcome when you’re here and not just a place you buy a car,” said Aarssen.

Kona at home here in C-K The Chatham Voice

The 2019 Hyundai Kona is a hot ticket in Chatham-Kent. In fact, Jeremy Derksen of Van Kesteren Hyundai said it’s the hottest selling Hyundai at the dealership. “The first year of sales has more then surpassed our expectations,” he said. “The crossover SUV appeals on many levels to a diverse customer base. It works for everybody, old and young. We’re seeing 20 year olds, 40 year olds, 80 year olds buying this car. It’s the price point. It’s the size of it, it’s also not too high or too low to the ground The Kona, fresh off being named North Ameri-

can Utility Vehicle of the Year, also offers style in a variety of bold colours, the latest technology, and plenty of safety features,” Derksen said As for technology, The Hyundai Kona features the latest in Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, GPS, Voice Texting, a backup camera and larger interactive screens. Kona also has an available Head-Up Display to project important information within your line of sight, so you can keep your attention on the road. No time to plug in your phone? Just place it on the wireless charging pad. Combat the cold with available heated seats and steering wheel. Receive some help while on the road, with available Forward Collision-Avoid-

ance Assist, Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Collision Warning, Driver Attention Warning, and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning. Kona is at home in Chatham-Kent, in urban and rural settings. It’s an SUV for the city. The Kona also sips fuel, with efficiency levels reaching as low at 7.0L/100km on some models. Enjoy the agile manoeuvrability of a passenger car, and the higher perspective of an SUV – it’s really the best of both worlds. Kona has been designed to turn heads and to raise pulses. The dynamic design catches the eye with unique details that highlight the strong Hyund-

ai SUV DNA at its core, starting with the signature cascading front grille design, muscular wheel arches and advanced lighting.

Bold body cladding runs along the side profile and rear bumper for a sporty look, and available twotone colour options let you customize Kona to

Final year for the VW Beetle

The Chatham Voice

The Beetles are going! The Beetles are going! Jesse Howell, general manager of Volkswagen Chatham, said 2019 will be the final year of production for the icon-

ic Volkswagen Beetle, a vehicle that can trace its design roots back to the 1930s. “It will be the end of a dynasty,” he said. “It will be your last chance to get one.” Howell said the Beetle

exudes fun and appeals to all ages. “They are actually quite good in the snow, are very reliable and the options packages are diverse,” he said. Those include Blind Spot Detection with Rear

Traffic Alert, App Connect with Smart Phone Integration (including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), keyless access and push-button start, LED lights; you name it, the Beetle can have it. Enjoy beautiful days

with a Panoramic Power Sunroof, perfect for intown driving or a journey through the country. The Beetle isn’t a thirsty vehicle. In fact, it can achieve a fuel efficiency of 7.1L/100 kms on the highway. It’s all thanks to a 2.0L engine that produces 174 HP. Howell encourages fans of the Beetle to take advantage of the final year of production. “People will be buying them up before they are gone,” he said. “I expect I’ll see 15 used Beetles come in here in the next little while alone.” Available in coupe or convertible, the 2019 Beetle has come a long way from its origins. Production on the original Beetle ran from the 1940s until the early 2000s. The New Beetle production began in the late 1990s and that was replaced by the current style, the Beetle (A5) starting in 2011. Through it all, the Beetle

has maintained its identifiable domed styling. Volkswagen Chatham is also celebrating being named a member of the 2018 Wolfsburg Crest Club. When a dealership offers outstanding sales and service, Volkswagen makes a point of celebrating it. That’s why the Wolfsburg Crest Club was created. For 2018, Volkswagen Chatham was one of 26 Volkswagen dealers to have met the highest standards for sales and service excellence. The dealership’s particular attention to detail in everything that they do has landed Volkswagen Chatham a place in the prestigious Club. Howell said it’s the highest honour a dealership can receive from Volkswagen, and is based on overall dealership performance, in sales, service and leasing.

Winning combination for Kia

The Chatham Voice

Kia has a couple of winners on its hands in the powerful Stinger and sporty Forte. The Kia Stinger has been named Canadian Car of the year for 2019 by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada

The 2019 Kia Stinger.

(AJAC), and the Kia Forte received the award for Best Small Car in Canada by AJAC. “We’re extremely happy,” Mike Weber, general manager of Lally Kia in Chatham, said. “Of all the cars of the year in various categories, they pick three finalists for Cana-

dian Car of the Year, and we happened to have two of the three finalists.” The Stinger earned the nod, and Forte placed second. Not bad for a car company that is only celebrating 20 years in Canada this year. Weber said Kia quality is still surprising

some people, while earning long-term customers in the process. “We’re extremely proud to represent a brand that is equal to if not better than any other brand in the world today,” he said. “This year, Kia will mark 20 years in Canada. When you look at what it’s accomplished in that time, I’d say it’s better than any other brand in this marketplace.” At Lally Kia, the sales staff let the cars do the talking. The Stinger turns heads, with its bold looks and performance. On the road, the Stinger is responsive and quick, smooth and powerful, easily proving its moniker as the most balanced Gran Tourismo to escape the Nurburgring test ring. “The Stinger gives you everything you want in a luxury sedan. It has great performance with absolutely no turbo lag,” Weber said. He drives a Stinger and

put it to the test on Chatham-Kent roads in the winter. He said with snow tires, the Stinger passed with flying colours. Don’t just take Weber’s word. “Come see it at the Auto Show, come pick it up at the dealership,” he said. The Forte is totally redesigned for 2019, and actually looks like a smaller version of the Stinger, Weber said. What it provides, however, is incredible fuel efficiency, at as low as 5.9L/100 km, and safety. “The rearview camera is standard,” Weber said. “There’s also available Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. Adding those two features alone makes this car an extremely safe vehicle.” Those safety features are displayed on an 8-inch screen, another standard feature on the Forte, along with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.

Weber said customer feedback on the new Forte has been excellent. “The vehicle has only been out a month or two, but we’ve sold quite a few already. Everybody just loves the styling,” he said. Lally Kia customers like the vehicles, but they also like how they are treated. “We don’t really sell cars; we gain customers,” Weber said. “We’re a forward-thinking dealership and we know the true value of every customer that comes in here. We appreciate their business.” Weber understands Kia may not be yet be front of mind for everyone when shopping for a new vehicle. But he believes once you take the time to look at what Kia has to offer that will change. “All you have to do is just get behind the wheel of a Kia and you’ll see the difference right away,” he said.

Wrangler, Ram earn awards The Chatham Voice

With its unmistakable round headlights, the new 2019 Jeep Wrangler is already part of an instant global icon in the auto world. Part of a long history, the Jeep started in 1941 primarily as a utility vehicle in the U.S. Army during the Second World War, and in 2018, the Wrangler JL model was introduced. Today, the Jeep Wrangler is part of a family that is known for its boundlessness on where it can take you. Offering versatility as an open-air vehicle with its unmatched off-road capabilities lets a Wrangler’s driver go wherever he pleases. “There’s nothing else like it or compares to it,” said Chatham Chrysler

general manager Mike Hogue. “I don’t think there’s anywhere in Chatham-Kent you couldn’t go, from a farmer’s field to driving on the beach at Erieau.” As the seasons change, the ability to not only remove doors, but also the flattop roof makes it the perfect summer vehicle to drive around in. Not to be outdone in the winter, the Wrangler also has the best 4x4 capability of any SUV in the market. Combining its classic design and updating it with the needs of a modern driver has won this off-roader Motor Trend’s 2019 SUV Of The Year award. Joining the Jeep Wrangler is also the 2019 Ram 1500, winning Motor Trend’s 2019 Truck of The

Year award. With its functionality, spaciousness and cabin features, it’s not hard to see why. While the Ram 1500 has the best in class rear seat legroom, best in class V8 towing and largest touch screen media system, what truly sets the Ram 1500 apart is the ride quality. “This is achieved by the rear coil-spring suspension system,” said Hogue. Engineers committed to improving the ride without costing performance, and also added in frequency dampers to impress consumers. “I invite you to test drive the Ram truck and feel the difference in the ride,” said Hogue. He is confident you will be impressed. To see the award-winning 2019 Jeep Wrangler

2019 Civic: Hot style, hot seller The Chatham Voice

For the past two decades, the Honda Civic has been the best-selling car in Canada. It looks like 2019 won’t be any different. Chris Degraw, sales

manager for Honda House in Chatham, said the 2019 model has a refreshed design, featuring a sportier look. “There are changes to the exterior, interior and new sport trim package was added,” he said of

the 2019 Compact Car of the Year. Honda also added the Type R Civic, a treat for the eyes. It features 20inch alloy wheels, triple centre exhaust, a rear wing spoiler, and a turbocharged 2.0L engine

that delivers 306 HP. If you like performance, this Civic is for you. But it is just one of the myriad of models of this top seller available. Degraw said a sleek look, combined with reliability, performance and safe-

ty, come standard on all Civics. So too does the fact it’s built right here in Ontario. Degraw said the Civic has come a long way over the years. “These cars have gotten to the point where they are almost a mid-sized family sedan. There’s lots of interior room, lots of trunk space,” he said. “Plus, it used to be that smaller cars were good on gas, but provided a rough ride. That’s not the case now.” Being made in Ontario, the Civic is ready to face everything Canadian drivers can throw at it. “The Civic is one of those vehicles that was designed and meant for us up here in Canada,” Degraw said. “They drive like a little tank in the snow. It’s crazy.” That winter peace of mind handling is one facet of this perennial top safety pick. Degraw said

Honda Sensing Technologies come standard on all Civic models. The technology is designed to help make you drive safer. With intuitive technology and design, whether you are behind the wheel or in the passenger’s seat, feel confident in the latest safety innovation from Honda. That innovation includes Forward Collision Warning, Collision Mitigation Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keeping Assist and more. Civics are built with passenger safety as the priority. The Civic is not surprisingly the top seller at Honda House. In fact, the Civic, combined with the Honda CRV crossover, another Ontario-built vehicle, make up more than 60 per cent of sales at Honda House, Degraw said. It features a longer wheelbase and wider track for a stable, confident drive; short overhangs and high ground clearance to help tackle most any terrain. “It’s a cost-effective, versatile vehicle that everyone is going to enjoy,” he said. That includes the young and older alike. Being a mid-sized SUV, the RAV4 combines excellent fuel economy for its size with incredible versatility. Three models come with Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive with Rear Driveline Disconnect. Dengel said this allows the RAV4 to tackle most anything Mother Nature throws our way. “It’s the best of all worlds. It offers two-wheel drive on the highway and Dynamic Torque Vectoring All-Wheel Drive when needed,” he said. “This has an intelligent system that if there is a slippage

under a tire, it puts more power to the tires that have traction.” Dengel said three models of the RAV4 illustrate the vehicle’s diversity. For a refined driving experience, there’s the Limited. Its 19-inch alloy wheels and chrome accents set it apart from other grades. To tackle off roading, RAV4 has the Trail edition. The RAV4 Trail features a more aggressive grille, large over fenders, fog light surrounds and a unique wheel design. The sportiest version in Dengel’s eyes will be the Hybrid XSE. Offering more horsepower, quicker acceleration and greater fuel efficiency than gas-only RAV4s, the XSE is a head turner and a smile maker. While the hybrid won’t be on display at the Chatham Indoor Auto Show, it will be coming to C-K in the near future, Dengel said.
