Fun with the Easter Bunny
By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
Sarah Schofield/The Chatham Voice
Five year-old Lilly Druer got a hug from the Easter Bunny at the First Responders Easter Eggstravaganza held at Kingston Park on Monday. Hundreds of children enjoyed the face painting, tours of fire trucks and more.
With RM/Sotheby’s anniversary celebrations less than two months away, Rob Myers is still preaching chaos. Myers, founder and chairman of RM/Sotheby’s, is the main force behind the big event, slated for June 21-22 in Chatham-Kent as a celebration of 40 years for the auto restoration business and auction house that he started. To help celebrate, Myers said he’s working to have members of the Porsche, Ferrari and Maserati clubs of the region attend. These clubs will convene at RM/Sotheby’s on the Saturday. Myers chaos will begin on the Friday night. He said he’s going to soon announce who will be the “high-profile” parade marshal for the RM/Sotheby’s parade of unique vehicles and oddball attractions. That includes a pair of mechanical elephants Myers has lined up from the 1940 Kansas City World’s Fair, and

more. “It will be as silly a parade as you’ll ever see,” Myers said. When you add such things as a Nudie Car – a rhinestone-studded vehicle designed by Nudie Cohn – or a 1950s pickup with a “great, big chicken in the back,” the Flintstone’s car, the Batmobile and the General Lee (from the TV show Dukes of Hazzard), as well as other one-of-a-kind vehicles, it can get silly. The parade will flow through the downtown. The annual RetroFest Cruise follows the parade. It will begin at an as-yet-undetermined location and will wind up in the downtown, as members of the Kent Historic Auto Club and outof-town classic car buffs showcase their vintage vehicles. Myers would love to see thousands of classic cars in Chatham on the Friday night and Saturday. Tickets for Friday night’s concert in Tecumseh Park by the Sam Roberts Band are now on sale. cillors in regard to his actions seeking to resolve an issue between the municipal building department and local businessman Brent DeNure over a building permit last year. Watson ruled Robertson violated section 14 of the Code, which relates to Conduct Respecting Staff. Council voted to receive the report at their most recent council meeting. Chatham Coun. Doug Sulman motioned successfully to have administration arrange an education session for council members this year in regard to the Code of Conduct. Chatham Coun. Michael Bondy said he doesn’t find the Code confusing. “There was some controversy that Coun. Robertson and his legal team felt the process wasn’t followed correctly. In order to clear that up, we’re going to have an education on the process,” he said. “I wasn’t being investigated and I wasn’t the investigator. I assumed Mr. Watson knows what he’s doing.”

important, particularly with the changes to provincial legislation,” he said. “It’s an integral part of the job as integrity commissioner to provide education to council.” As Bondy mentioned, Robertson and his lawyer, Steve Pickard, believed the investigative process wasn’t followed properly. They said Watson had written his report before he even interviewed Robertson, and alleged bias. Watson disagreed with those allegations. “I was very surprised. I find it unfortunate.

They can be purchased online at cktickets.com, or in person at the box office at the Chatham Capitol theatre, which is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Proceeds from the show go to the Foundation of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA). Tickets for Big Sugar’s Saturday night concert at the Capitol Theatre can also be purchased in the same manner as listed above. Proceeds from that show will go to the Chatham-Kent Hospice. With all the added traffic and vehicles, RM/Sotheby’s personnel have obtained the use of the parking lot in front of the former Target store on Grand Avenue West. Shuttle buses will take people back and forth to the downtown. Shuttle buses will also be taking people between the downtown and RM/Sotheby’s just south of Highway 401. On Saturday afternoon, a showcase of unique collector items will take place in the museum area of RM/Sotheby’s. It’s a ticketed event and proceeds will go towards the Butterfly Build Fund for the Chlidren’s
Treatment Centre. There are other events taking place out at RM/Sotheby’s on Classic Car Drive just off Communications Road on the celebratory weekend. The museum area and restoration shop will be open for viewing, and 519 Events & Promotions will run Art at RM on the Saturday as well. It will showcase a selection of local artisans, dozens of vendors, and a graffiti competition. Myers said shipping containers will be set up for painting, and there will be prizes for the best graffiti. There will also be hot air balloon rides, a barbecue and entertainment. Myers said he has received some negative feedback about choosing June 21-22 as the time for his 40th anniversary celebrations. RetroFest in Chatham and the Blenheim Classics Auto Show flipped weekends, as the Blenheim show was to take place on June 22. It now runs May 25. But the 2019 Pain Court Tractor Pull and Thamesville Threshing Festival are slated for the same weekend. The Tractor Pull takes place Friday night, while the Threshing Fest runs Friday and Saturday.
Sarah Schofield/The Chatham Voice
RM/Sotheby’s chairman Rob Myers, seen relaxing here in his office/man cave, hopes to entice people to come to Chatham-Kent on June 21-22 for more than just the 40th anniversary celebrations of his business, for everything going on in the municipality that weekend.
Myers hopes to help drive traffic to both events. “Let’s make it a great big Chatham-Kent party. I want to get shuttles going and show visitors what a threshing festival is,” he said. Myers said he chose June 21-22 with his employees in mind. He said they are between auctions at that time, and are in preparations for the Monterrey, Calif. automobile auction.
He added he has had some clients that are incredibly loyal and would like to reward them. “I’m 40 years in business and I’ve had some of the same clients all these years,” he said. “Some have never been to Chatham-Kent. Why not invite some of those VIPs here? We’ll host them and show them the Threshing Festival, the Tractor Pull and RetroFest.” He said he’s received some
great help from local supporters. “It’s about celebrating 40 years, but it’s about having fun; it’s about helping charities,” Myers said. “Our plans are still evolving. We hope to augment fun everywhere and get parents involved with their kids.” With everything going on downtown or out at RM, it could get confusing. There will be an app for people to check on schedules and locations.

Watson defends investigation Continued from page 2
“When you are viewing a report where someone is making a negative decision against you, you can do one of two things: provide your response to the facts or you can go ahead and attack the process and the integrity commissioner,” he said. “His interpretation was that it was within his scope of responsibility and his duty to bring
the matter forward in the way he was proposing to do so. I’m saying, ‘You are not allowed to interfere with the independence of certain employees.’” Watson said there was no mistake in how the investigation was handled. “The focus of this procedure should not be about Mr. Robertson and whether or not the integrity commissioner
should have interviewed him first or last,” he said. “Really, this report is all about the employees of this municipality and their right to do their job without political interference. “There were a number of times where Mr. Robertson intervened during the time the chief building official was basically doing his job with respect to making deter-
minations as to what the requirements were under the building code to renovate this building.” The integrity commissioner said the chief building official (CBO) has to follow provincial guidelines. “The CBO has statutory duties. The clerk does too. So do the treasurer, lawyers, and accountants and other professionals. They have responsibili-
ties under the Municipal Act to their regulatory authorities,” he said. Robertson said the CBO is an appointment of council, and as such is a position that is reviewable by council. “The only one who can strip him (the CBO) of his position is council,” he said. “By me saying I could bring it to council, that is the proper execution of my duty.”
Bondy said technically every employee is an appointment of council, but in reality, councillors have no part in all but one hiring. “We give all the hiring authority to the CAO (Don Shropshire). It was argued the CBO is an appointment of council, but we don’t hire anybody except the CAO,” he said. “I don’t agree with that.” Continued on page 5

Council needs more control, Bondy says
Continued from page 4
“I think we should approve EMT (executive management team) and SMT (senior management team) hires, on the recommendation of the CAO. He said councillors usually find out about hires the way everyone else does.
“How do we find out who’s been appointed to positions? By the press releases you guys get, he told The Chatham Voice. “But we get blamed when there’s a bad hire and we have zero to do with it. That’s the authority we gave to the CAO’s office years ago.

Code needs revisiting The recent decision of the Chatham-Kent municipal integrity commissioner that stated a former councilor contravened the municipal Code of Conduct by going to senior management with a concern from a constituent seems confusing and contradictory. One would think the very purpose of a council member is to bring concerns from constituents to the attention of municipal staff in order to determine if a solution can be found that is reasonable and legal for both parties. How is that against a Code of Conduct? The investigation into the complaint by former Mayor Randy Hope against former councilor Derek Robertson seems to have been mishandled from start to finish. Why is someone allowed to make a complaint after an election result? If Hope was so concerned about how the chief building official was treated, why did he wait until after the election to file it? If the report the commissioner, Paul Watson, sent to Robertson wasn’t the final report – before he was interviewed – why did the conclusion state that Robertson was guilty on two counts and have recommendations to council regarding sanctions? That sounds like a final report. How is it that the chief building official was interviewed about how he felt, yet Robertson – who the complaint was against – was talked about in the first report by Watson as someone who didn’t need to be interviewed? The final confusing aspect of the investigation is that Robertson’s concerns turned out to be well-founded and a court of law sided with Brent DeNure over his building permit and damages from the municipality. If the proper procedure for councillors isn’t to take concerns to CEO Don Shropshire regarding action taken by staff members for resolution, how are councillors expected to represent their constituents? Is there to be no oversite of staff except by the CEO? We elect councilors to be our eyes and ears at council and our advocate around that horseshoe. This whole mess of a Code of Conduct needs to be revised to give councilors the right to ask questions and expect proper action and reaction if an employee’s conduct is called into question. Anything less than that makes council redundant and our municipality a dictatorship, and is not what democracy is all about.

Opinion
Curry letter attacks the issue Sir: This note is written with thanks and admiration in support of Jillian Curry and her intelligent, articulate letter which appeared in The Chatham Voice April 18, “MPP’s comments concerning.” I will not re-state Ms. Curry’s objections to MPP Rick Nicholls’ Facebook post demonizing the well-organized, peaceful protest staged at Queen’s Park on April
6; her points were all well-taken, supported by logic and reference to the Charter of Rights & Freedoms. I will, however, echo her concern with Nicholls’ reference “to a premier and government in authority over (those students & teachers).” I believe Ms. Curry and I – and presumably, all the citizens of
the Chatham-Kent Leamington riding and indeed, all Canadians – take pride in our constitutional democracy. We elect governments to represent us and act in our best interest, not whine when they are criticized for acting autocratically and immorally. I deplore the announced cuts to education; they
embody the regressive, backwards-thinking approach to policy this Conservative government has taken. Ms. Curry implored our MPP to act with integrity and respect, remembering that words have power. Again, her letter speaks for me and .................. Deborah Brittan Chatham
Ford trying to cut spending Sir: It was difficult for me to take Jillian Curry’s comments seriously (“MPP’s comments concerning,” letter to the editor in the April 18 Chatham Voice), when she slammed comments made by MPP Rick Nicholls who criticized
teachers and students for public demonstrations about the government’s intentions to cut money for schools. I think it was unseemly to do this when Premier Doug Ford is, rightly or
wrongly, trying to reduce the province’s debt level. There is nothing wrong with quiet dialogue instead of an undignified public display. I am reminded from a quote by Dale Carnegie
who once said, “Any fool can criticize, complain, and condemn – and most fools do. But it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving.” Stephen J. Beecroft Chatham
Be alert on Chatham-Kent roads Sir: The sentencing of the bus driver that changed the lives of so many individuals and families in Humboldt, Sask. was announced recently. A moment of distraction
has caused lifelong pain. In Chatham, several incidents of speeding through red lights could have done the same:
double tanker sped through light just as a car entered a main intersection; at the hospital, a coach and a car went through light; two
SUVs sped up and both went through the light on Grand Avenue. Please pay attention for safety’s sake. Margaret Moriyama Chatham

Renowned Canadian Fiddle Champion Scott Woods and his all-star band present Fiddlin’ Around on Saturday night in Blenheim. This new uplifting two-hour Branson-style live show features lots of fun fiddle tunes in the style of Don Messer, Graham Townsend and Al Cherny, as well as traditional country and Gospel songs that reflect the music and values of the past. A variety for all tastes and ages, this fast-paced family show will keep everyone entertained with Woods’ wit and his prowess on the fiddle, along with sweet harmonies, smooth vocals, yodeling, sensational step dancing, family humour, inspirational stories, and Woods’ famous trick fiddling – front and back somersaults and walking on a barrel – all while playing his fiddle. Scott Woods is a two-time winner of the Canadian Open Fiddle Contest, two-time winner of the Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Cham-

College buddies Devin Birkby and Braeden Murphy (shown) took it upon themselves to clean up the ditch along Baldoon Road between Gregory Drive to a point opposite Our Lady of Fatima School on a soggy Saturday. The higher water in the ditches made it easier for the two men, as they even employed a small kayak to get to the litter. The pair filled up eight garbage bags, with much of the bulk comprised of empty plastic bottles.

tified 111 full-time equivalent teachers regarding potential staffing changes due to anticipated reductions in Ministry of Education grant funding. Board officials said that as per the LKDSB’s contractual obligations, the board is required to inform teaching staff of any staffing changes. The number of layoff notices includes members of two employee groups: 52 Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario members and 59 Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation members. According to the LKDSB website, board teachers, support and administrative staff serve 21,000 students in 51 elementary and 12 secondary schools throughout the Lambton Kent District School Board. In addition to reduced revenue due to declining enrolment, the funded average class size in secondary schools will be increased from 22 to 28 students per teacher and the funded average class size for Grades 4-8 will increase marginally. LKDSB officials said they anticipate that both of these measures will result in a significant reduction in grant revenue. The LKDSB is currently awaiting the specific details regarding the funding allocations for the Grants for Student Needs, which is anticipated to be provided by the end of April. The Ministry has also affirmed that the Local Priority Funding, an allotment that has been used in the past to fund some staff positions, will expire Aug. 31. “These are challenging times and we understand that these funding changes will have a direct impact on programming, particularly in our rural schools which are experiencing a significant decline in enrolment,” said Director of Education Jim Costello in a media release. “In the past, LKDSB has made staffing adjustments to accommodate declining enrolment; however, the number of notifications for this year is higher than in previous years. The priority for senior administration remains focused on providing and maintaining as many classes as possible in our schools for our students.” Each year, LKDSB has a number of retirements, resignations and employees transitioning to different roles, which also has an impact on the staffing process. The LKDSB continues to have ongoing communication with local union partners and will continue to do so as the budget and staffing processes evolve.

Life
Rain can’t kill the good times Thank you, Mother Nature, for such a lousy Easter weekend outdoors. At least you spared Sunday and couldn’t foul up some indoor fun. It was a busy weekend around the Corcoran household, although it would have been busier had we had a little more sunshine. The action began Thursday night for a nephew’s birthday gathering. We dodged raindrops for his dinner get-together. But the weather wreaked havoc on Mary Beth and I on the weekend. She was down and out Thursday for the day and night with a nasty migraine. For me, the wet, humid Thursday and soaking Friday delivered a great deal of arthritic pain. My left hip in particular was yelling at me. It persisted through Saturday as well, when we wandered over to the home of friends Charlene and Eggless Chad. Mary Beth did up her Brie cheese and garlic dish, bringing fresh ciabatta buns for dipping into the melted yumminess. This can be made on our Big Green Egg, but is done just fine in an oven too. The key is to melt the cheese but don’t turn it into a liquid. We enjoyed a variety of appetizers, all prepared and cooked out of the rain. And we watched the Winnipeg Jets lose, before playing a variety of board games and card games. That included the teenagers. It’s great to see them enjoy board games. I certainly did as a kid. Sunday delivered warmer weather and some sunshine. With friends Pete and Arlene arriving for dinner later that afternoon, we placed a pork loin in a sink full of water to quickly thaw it out. It was about six pounds, so I expected it to take more than two hours to cook. I was right, but feared I was at first very wrong. More on that in a few paragraphs. First, I placed a good bed of lump charcoal in the Big Green Egg, lit it and got the temperature up to about 350 F. Meanwhile, as the Egg heated up, I gave the pork loin a light rub of
Bruce Corcoran mustard so the Dizzy Dust seasoning I liberally sprinkled on it would stick. Onto the Egg it went about 3:45 p.m. I pulled out my Traeger remote digital thermometer Mary and Brenna gave me last Father’s Day. It’s great for mid-length cooks. While it doesn’t control the temperature the way a Digi-Q unit does with its fan, the Traeger still monitors meat temperature and barbecue temperature. I slid the probe into the pork loin, and relaxed to some classic rock in the backyard. But as I periodically glanced at the thermometer, it was evident the internal meat temperature was rising too fast. I gave a time of 2025 minutes per pound (two to 2.5 hours) for cooking to Mary for her to time the vegetables, etc. The meat got to 130 F way too quickly (I target pork to come off at 145 F). But I moved the probe and found the true deepest part of the meat. It did ultimately take about 2.5 hours of cooking, maybe a bit longer. For much of that, Pete and I sat out back, enjoying a beer, the smell of the meat cooking, the tunes, casual conversation, chirping of birds ... and then the disappearance of the sun. OK, the last part wasn’t as enjoyable. When I first when out there, I had to take off my hoodie. It was beautiful weather in just a longsleeved T-shirt. As soon as that sun got behind clouds, it was a different story. But it didn’t prevent the meat from being delicious, along with the green beans, cauliflower, mashed potatoes, salad, etc.

Beard challenge for charity The Chatham Voice
A Chatham business is challenging beard owners to share pictures of their growing beards during the NHL 2019 Playoff. Chatham-based Smellis Beard Oil is organizing the Hockey Beard Challenge. Similar to initiatives like Mo-
vember and “playoff beards” the Hockey Beard Challenge is a way for hockey lovers to share their beards-in-progress on social media to win prizes. Organizer and Smellis owner Sally Ellis said it’s easy to participate. “Anyone who wants to participate in the challenge can take a photo of their beard and
Yvonne Resident of Revera
post it on their Facebook or Instagram, using the hashtag #CKHOCKEYBEARD. It could even be a friend or family member’s beard,” she said in a media release. “Participants gain points for every photo they share between now and the Stanley Cup Finals. A prize pack will be given to the person who has the most points. We’ll
be hosting an exclusive party at Sons of Kent Brewing during the finals, and proceeds of that event will go to Hope House. We’ll also have a panel of judges determine who has the Most Hockey Beard at the event.” Ellis makes and sells beard oil and facial hair care products for men, and the event is a way for her to launch her business
to the public. “I’ve been totally involved in the complexity and combination of natural aromas. It’s a hobby for me right now, but I hope to grow the business over the next few months. This Hockey Beard Challenge is fun for me because it’s directly related to the focus of my business.”
