Everybody’s working for the weekend – the Festival of Nations weekend at the end of June in Chatham, that is. And that includes iconic Canadian rock band Loverboy, who will headline
the Festival in its return from a nearly two decade hiatus. Mike Reno and the rest of the guys from Loverboy perform in Tecumseh Park June 30 at a free concert in the bandshell. In fact, the Festival activities are all free, according to co-chairs Dava

Two months after essentially winning the health lottery, Chatham-Kent’s Jocelyn McGlynn has received more good news. Diagnosed last year with a rare form of leukemia, Jocelyn learned recently her immune system has essentially been entirely replaced by that of her donor. Getting the perfect match – 10 out of 10 categories – in February was the equivalent in luck to

With a perfect match donor in place, Jocelyn, a student at the University of Western Ontario, went to the Rowell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY and received a stem cell transplant in late February. Those cells have been busy, her father, Peter, said. Getting to where she is today has not been easy. Peter said doctors have wiped out her immune system three times via chemotherapy.

Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff said he’s happy to see the Festival of Nations return to Tecumseh Park, and anticipates the weekend to be “absolutely huge.” Canniff said Chatham-Kent is home to a wide variety of different cultures. “There are 58 languages spoken in Chatham-Kent. We would love to have all of them represented at Festival of Nations,” he said. “We are an accepting community and we want to showcase that.” Callaghan agreed. “All of us are immigrants from one decade or another,” she said. And for the people who preceded most of us here, Robichaud said First Nation peoples will be represented in the opening cer-

emonies and will dedicate the land and give blessing. Additional involvement for local First Nation communities is also in the works. No weekend bash is complete, especially leading up to Canada Day, without fireworks. Those will take place on the Saturday night at St. Clair College. On July 1, organizers
said they plan on hosting a massive pancake breakfast in the park. And it too is a free event. Callaghan said while plans are still shaping up in terms of participation, feedback from various cultural groups has been quite positive, and many are reaching out to the organizers. “The positive energy is
phenomenal. There has been lots of support and interest,” she said. Canniff said the return of Festival of Nations is another big event taking place inside Chatham-Kent. “This will be a huge event; something we need more of. We want lots of things to do in Chatham-Kent,” he said.

Day of Mourning Remembering William Henry Somers

Descendants of William Henry Somers joined up with staff from Hydro One Friday to unveil a commemorative plaque for Somers and to mark the National Day of Mourning. On a cold, wet and windy day, they gathered in front of the Kent Transformer Station on Maple Leaf Drive in Chatham. That’s where Somers died on May 21, 1918 in an industrial accident. Somers, an electrical inspector with the Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario, was electrocuted while working on a dead switch at the station. He inadvertently came too close to a live high-voltage power line and was hit by 26,000 volts of electricity. Family came from as far away as Ottawa and Owen Sound to mark the dedication on Friday. Brad Taylor of Hydro One said Somers came to Chatham when hydro was first being installed in the city. He was recognized as
an expert electrician. “It was 101 years ago, but the work doesn’t sound much different than what our staff does today,” he said. About two dozen of Somers’ descendants attended the dedication. Somers was survived by his wife, Charlotte, and their eight children, who ranged in age from just four months old to 13 years old. His death left the family without a father and wage earner. According to a media release, his wife kept the family going by doing other people’s laundry and taking in boarders. Dianne Moore, one of Somers grandchildren, said Friday’s dedication underlines that he did not die in vain. “His tragic death contributed to the development of important safety strategies,” she said. “We didn’t know him, but it means a lot to us for him to be recognized.” The Kent Transformer Station takes in electricity at 230,000 volts and steps it down to 115,000 volts for distribution to Chatham.
Taylor said the National Day of Mourning is a time for people to recognize those who have been killed or badly injured while on the job, as well as “their family, friends and coworkers who have been deeply affected by their tragedies. “As we remember those who died or were seriously injured as a result of an industrial accident, I ask you to make a serious commitment to workplace safety,” he added. Meanwhile, more than two dozen people gathered in the atrium of the Civic Centre Friday morning to conduct a brief ceremony and hold a moment of silence in observance of the Day of Mourning for workers killed or injured in workplace accidents. Denise Lidster, manager of occupational safety for the municipality, spoke of the origin of the day, which is officially observed on April 28. Although the day of mourning began in 1984, it didn’t become a national observance until 1990. It is now observed in more than 80 countries.

started building.” It’s to the point now where her system is “98-100 per cent donor.” “The type of leukemia that Jocelyn had would have just returned otherwise,” Peter said. Jocelyn shared an emotional note recently via social media. “Thank you to everyone for
their positivity, love, prayers and well wishes during this time. I am beyond grateful,” she said. “There is no trace of residual disease. Where my disease was, myeloid, I am 100 per cent donor cells. Words cannot begin to describe how full my heart is with gratitude and love.” Peter said the family is ecstatic these days. “We’re so happy. This is very awesome news. It gives you a little bit of pause to say ‘thanks,’” he said. Support for Jocelyn, not just in Chatham, but also across the region, was touching, Peter said. “It’s powerful to have a lot of people from Southwestern Ontario care about it,” he said of Jocelyn’s cancer journey. “It was amazing. It gave us strength. This is a young lady that not too many people were aware of in Southwestern Ontario before. And then to have all those people support us and our family.” That included long lines at blood donor clinics and swab clinics here in Chatham-Kent as well Indie Folk Singer as in London. Peter said the family initially was a little concerned about heading to Buffalo for Jocelyn’s procedure. They shouldn’t have been. Otherwise, it’s at least a year before a recipient can seek out the donor. “We know he’s 20 and don’t know where he’s from,” Peter said. “Jocelyn would love to meet him and hug him and give her thanks for saving her life.” With the latest hurdle in her recovery out of the way, the next target time is late May or early June – when Jocelyn should be able to come home. “We’re obviously anxious to have her back in Canada and have her home,” her father said. Jocelyn is a medical sciences student at Western. She hopes to one day become a doctor.

RM/Sotheby’s has released additional details about what is to take place at its headquarters, and the site of RM Auto Restoration on June 22 as part of the 40th anniversary celebrations. Art at RM and the RM40 Concours d’Elegance will take place at One Classic Car Drive, just south of Highway 401 and off Communications Road. Art at RM, organized by a committee of volunteers, in partnership with 519 Events & Promotions, will exhibit dozens of local artisans and makers at the front of the RM property. A graffiti competition will also occur on the grounds, with artists invited to compete by showcasing their artwork on large canvases such as a shipping container or tractor trailer. Prizes will be awarded to the top three contestants, as determined by a panel of judges. Those interested in becoming a vendor or participating in the graffiti contest are invited to write to 40@rmsothebys.com. A once-in-a-lifetime collector car display, the RM40 Concours d’Elegance will also take place at One Classic Car Drive and will feature
some of the rarest and most beautiful cars in the world. Early highlights include a 1937 Cadillac Series 90 Hartmann Cabriolet, measuring an imposing 22 feet in length, one of less than 10 surviving models. It was most recently shown at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Also on display will be the multiaward winning 1933 Delage D8S Roadster by De Villars, one of just 99 models built, and representing the height of the Art Deco-influenced French design in the 1930s. The Cadillac and Delage were restored by the expert craftsmen at RM Auto Restoration, who have won the coveted Best of Show an unmatched six-times at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. Tickets to the indoor Concours will be available for purchase soon at cktickets.com, as well as at the gate upon arrival to the event, with proceeds benefiting the Children’s Treatment Centre Foundation of Chatham-Kent. Artistic outlets In a world that is increasingly more focused on technology and trades for future job markets, visual arts are almost always the first to go when cuts must be made. Our school boards, however, still make room for arts in the curriculum, even if it is considered an elective rather than a core course. Mind you, in this province, you only have to take geography and history once each in high school, because why would you need to know where you come from or how to get somewhere? Visual arts is not a fluff course for people who don’t want to do actual work. Ask any art student and they will tell you how their teacher challenges them to reach deep for inspiration and motivation, and how creating a piece of art can leave you exhausted both mentally and physically. Art has the ability to relax and soothe, yet at the same time, excite and challenge you. And our students need that kind of outlet in their life. When an emotion may be hard to articulate, drawing or painting or sculpting can be a way to get it out, and to heal. How many times has a picture or art piece made you pause and just “be” for a moment? Art is something we too infrequently value, but we really can’t do without. The visual arts teachers at our Chatham-Kent high schools really deserve a great deal of credit for collaborating on a Student Art Show that helps students dig deep and feel to create art pieces to share with the community. On May 2-9, take a few minutes to visit the show at the Downtown Chatham Centre, and appreciate the creativity and talent from our teens. Every minute they spend in creative contemplation as an outlet for their emotions is a minute not spent on drugs or other harmful behaviours. There is a reason therapists use art to help draw out their clients – because it works where words sometimes don’t, and it is soothing to the soul. It’s time to support creative pursuits for our students at home and at school. Hopefully the government is listening.

Council, not councillors, direct staff Sir: I am responding to your April 25 opinion piece titled “Code needs revisiting.” Council has asked for more training on the Code of Conduct. Staff will work with the Integrity Commissioner to ensure that additional training is arranged for council members. After the training, council may direct administration to review and provide recommendations to council to amend the Code of Conduct as needed. I wish clarify some of the statements reported in your editorial. Council members have
the right to bring forward concerns of constituents; this right is in no way restricted by the Code of Conduct. This right includes raising concerns about the actions of our employees. The Code of Conduct guides how members of council exercise this right. I assure you that the CAO and by extension members of administration take direction as given by the elected officials. However, the CAO and staff cannot take direction from individual members of council. We take our direction from a majority
of council voting in a meeting of council. You comment that “a court of law sided with Brent DeNure over his building permit and damages…” is incorrect. The court gave an order that held the status quo on the dispute while the parties prepared materials for a full court hearing. The parties ultimately negotiated a final settlement before the court hearing. The court did not make any final decision. Regarding a complaint filed after the municipal election, it is established
law in Ontario that a complaint can be filed about any member of council up until the date the council is dissolved. The municipal election was held on Oct. 22. However, the new council was not sworn in until Dec. 3. Additionally, the law will not allow a complaint to be investigated during an election so as to avoid tainting the outcome of an election. who wanted to give their students a chance to show their work and get valuable feedback. Jenn McQuade, visual arts teacher at John McGregor Secondary School in Chatham, said she was very pleased her students are taking part in the show with multiple pieces using various techniques and mediums. Three of her Grade 12 art students, Samuel Pletsch, Alexis Desjardins and Nevaeh Fox each are entering multiple pieces in the show. “I like art because it lets me express what I’m feeling and show a deeper part of me and what affects me in my life,” Pletsch said. “It also helps me centre myself and concentrate because it’s very relaxing. I always want art in my life and would love it if it could be incorporated into what I do.” All of the pieces Pletsch does are memories of people or places and things that had an impact on his life. One piece he is showing is an acrylic painting of a favourite street in Paris, France, with Sacre Coeur church in the background. For Desjardins, who was working on a portrait using a stippling technique with a 0.1 mm ink pen, said art can be a “love/hate” relationship.

Murphy to be honoured May 12 The Chatham Voice
Join the Wallaceburg and District Council for the Arts as it celebrates the life and music of one of Wallaceburg’s own, Ralph Murphy, who has had an extraordinary career in the music business since leaving the community in 1965 to follow his dreams. The event is being held on May 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jeanne Gordon Theatre in Wallaceburg. Murphy, who started his music career as a folksinger in and around Wallaceburg in the early 1960s, has received Special Achievement Awards by the Canadian Music Association and SOCAN over
the last two years for the contribution he has made to Canadian music over five decades. He has also been inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame. He produced April Wine’s platinum selling albums in the early 1970s while working in New York, has written or co-written a number of country music hits that have earned him Gold Records since taking up residence in Nashville in 1976. Murphy has helped countless Canadian musicians, mostly country, to realize their dreams and served a vice-president of ASCAP (American Association of Composers, Au-
thors and Publishers). He has also taught songwriting around the world. “We are absolutely thrilled to be presenting this special evening,” said Arts Council organizer John Gardiner in a media release. “Ralph has left our small town and done some great things in the music business, but he has always been a Wallaceburg boy at heart and the community needs to celebrate his accomplishments.” Murphy will not be performing that evening but several Canadian country singer/songwriters will be there to play a variety of the hit tunes he has written or co-written over

Rotary donates $20K to build fund The Chatham Voice
The Chatham Rotary Club presented the Children’s Treatment Centre Foundation with a
cheque for $20,000 in support of its Butterfly Building Campaign recently. The Children’s Treatment Centre provides services to one-in-seven
children and youth in Chatham-Kent, and is expected to serve one in five by 2020. The CTC-CK’s Butterfly Building Campaign will
support building a larger, state-of-the-art facility that will better accommodate the growing caseload. “It is a great opportunity to be part of the expansion of the Children’s Treatment Centre. The Chatham Rotary Club has been working alongside the CTC for 70 years and we know that the $20,000 will go towards reducing wait times for the children of Chatham-Kent.” Jennifer Hill, President of the Chatham Rotary Club, said in a media release. Coping with the loss of a loved one is difficult enough for people, but the added trauma of losing someone to suicide brings extra challenges to dealing with grief. During Mental Health
Week in Ontario, the Suicide Prevention Committee of Chatham-Kent is bringing help to the community with a free education seminar May 8 on “Understanding Traumatic Grief After a Loss due to Suicide.” The event is being held at the Lambton-Kent
District School Board (LKDSB) education centre at 476 McNaughton Ave. E. in Chatham from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The seminar is being led by Dena Moitoso, a registered psychotherapist with a Master’s Degree in psychology and a specialization in traumatic bereavement.

member of the local suicide prevention committee, said the group is partnering with the local Canadian Mental Health Association, Chatham-Kent Children’s Services, St. Clair College and the LKDSB to put on the event for free. As a mom who lost her son to suicide, McCormack understands the different challenges grieving loved ones face when trying to cope with the loss and the guilt. “Losing a child by any means, I don’t know how people cope, but when you lose a child to suicide, you always carry a huge guilt, like you should have been able to do something,” McCormack shared. “This education night is for anyone who has experienced suicide in his or her family or friend group. Everyone’s grief, they handle differently and it’s always there. You don’t get over it.”
She added the seminar is for people 18 years and up, and said the aim to increase awareness and have more open discussion about suicide and bereavement. Moitoso will also be facilitating a workshop for professionals on May 9 at Chatham-Kent Children’s Services in the cafeteria from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the topic of suicide bereavement. Anyone interested in attending either free event is asked to register by e-mailing mwalker@cmhalambtonkent.ca or call 519-436-6100, ext. 2237. McCormack said anyone interested in just briefly checking out either event is welcome to stop in and see what it is all about. The Suicide Prevention Committee has been in the area for about 10 years and receives no government funding to operate. She said the group’s main goal is awareness and education.

Anthony Yi to run for Greens in LKM The Chatham Voice
The Lambton Kent Middlesex Federal Green Party Association announced Anthony Li will be the candidate for the 2019 Federal Election. Li is currently studying Medical Sciences and Economics at Western
University. He was the Green Party of Ontario candidate in the Ontario election in 2018 in LKM. The candidate has experience with several boards and advisory councils, including Leads Employment Services, Plan International Canada Youth Advisory Coun-
cil and the Western University Student’s Council Board of Directors. “I believe that my energy and passion will help immensely in serving the people of Lambton-Kent-Middlesex”, said Li in a media release. “Canadians want change. Canadians want respect.
Canadians want transparency. Canadians want an accountable government.” He said that the Green Party is committed to the goals of a sustainable economy with local jobs, strong community supported by local systems, and good government,
including the need for proportional representation to give local representation. The new federal candidate was acclaimed by the membership of the local riding association. The Green Party of Canada has seen its polling numbers increase this
year, building on recent provincial success in the election of several MPPs and MLAs in Ontario, BC, New Brunswick and PEI. The Green Party is now the official provincial opposition in PEI, with 10 seats there.

WHAT IS SEXUAL VIOLENCE? Sexual Violence is any sexual act or attempt to obtain a sexual act by violence or force. This includes: • unwanted sexual comments or advances • selling or attempting to sell someone for sex • acts of violence directed against an individual because of their sexuality, regardless of the relationship to the victim. FACTS ABOUT SEXUAL VIOLENCE? • Rape is about power and control, not sex • There are no grey areas, it’s never okay • Clothes are not a risk factor. What someone is wearing is never an indication of anything other than their fashion choice. • Uninvited touching and/or comments are never acceptable • Comments directed against a person’s sexuality can be a form of sexual harassment and violence and can have a negative impact on self-esteem and well-being. This is against the law. • Just because someone buys you dinner or a drink, doesn’t mean you owe them sex in return.

FACTS ABOUT CONSENT When it comes to sexual assault, consent is defined as the voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity. In other words, you must actively and willingly give consent to sexual activity. Any type of sexual activity without consent is sexual assault. Consent: • should never be assumed or implied • is not silence or the absence of “no” • cannot be given if you are impaired by alcohol or drugs, or unconscious • can never be obtained through threats or coercion • can be withdrawn at any time • cannot be given if the perpetrator abuses a position of trust, power or authority • cannot be given by anyone other than the person participating in the sexual activity (e.g. your parent, brother or sister, girlfriend or boyfriend, spouse, friend, etc. cannot consent for you or on your behalf). MYTH ABOUT SEXUAL ASSAULT Myth: Sexual assault is most likely to happen outside in dark, dangerous places. Fact: The majority of sexual assaults happen in private spaces like a residence or private home.

HOW YOU CAN INTERVENE Even as a bystander you can help stop sexual violence and harassment. Speak up and: • come to a victim’s defense if you witness sexual harassment and offer support • call the police if you witness sexual assault • tell the police if you see anyone adding something suspicious to another person’s drink • check in with your friends and any vulnerable individuals to see that they get home safely • say “no” if anyone tries to share private texts or snapchats they’ve received • refuse to join degrading conversations that keep sexism and sexual violence alive (and voice your disapproval)
