Red hot interest in Tesla Roadster
Bruce Corcoran/The Chatham Voice
RM Sotheby’s and RM Auto Restoration hosted their first Cars & Coffee event of the season Saturday morning, drawing hundreds of people to the facility. Dozens of classic car owners brought their vehicles to show them off to the public, while RM opened the doors to its museum floor and the restoration shop floor, giving patrons a special treat, seeing vintage vehicles and high-performance roadsters on display or in for improvements. Here, a crowd gathers around a Tesla Roadster. While Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Batmobiles and more were on display inside, classic muscle cars and a diverse offering of other vehicles were showcased by their owners outdoors. Some visitors had to park back on Classic Car Drive as all on-property parking options were filled at one point. For more photos, visit chathamvoice.com.
Historic signing at Fairfield
By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com
At a historic signing, the Fairfield property on Longwoods Road near Bothwell is now in the hands of the Eelunaapeewi Lahkeewiit (formerly Moraviantown). The United Church of Canada signed over the
land, a significant step toward reconciliation between Indigenous people and Christian churches. Held May 10, the signing ceremony also held historical significance as it was held on the same week Fairfield was established 227 years ago, when the Delaware Nation people arrived with
the Moravian missionaries in 1792. “Our nation has long dreamed of the return of our first home in these lands,” said Eelunaapeewi Lahkeewiit Chief Denise Stonefish. “We thank the Antler River Watershed Regional Council of the United Church for their good faith, goodwill
and leadership to help us make this dream a reality.” Stonefish added that Friday’s historic signing is a clear example of the spirit and intent of the federal Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action in addressing the legacy of residential schools. The return of Fairfield
was a process, she said, that was started locally back in 1960 under then Chief John Peters, and other chiefs have worked hard to push the issue forward. The Commission calls on all religious denominations to respect the Indigenous people’s right to decide and practice their

Water, water everywhere Wind pushes water into Rondeau Bay, causing localized flooding
By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
It’s been a tough spring for shoreline properties on Rondeau Bay and Lake Erie. Last week, high water blown into the west end of Lake Erie saw water levels rise, causing flooding along parts of Rondeau Bay communities and on the bay side of Erieau. Municipal staff dropped cement and earthen barriers across the ends of several streets in Erieau to try to mitigate flooding in low-lying areas where
no break wall currently exists. Due to record lake levels and high winds from the east, water levels in Rondeau Bay increased by 10 cm May 8, with approximately 15 homes affected by rising water. No evacuations were reported. Alexandria Depuydt has lived at the end of Princess Street in Shrewsbury for about a decade. She said she’d never seen the water as high as it was last week. Water pushed up the drains and ditches in the South Kent community

Ancestral lands returned to First Nation Continued from page 1
“Recognizing and honouring the connection that the people of Eelunaapeewi Lahkeewiit have to this land, and ensuring its return to them, are essential to the United Church of Canada’s deep commitment to reconciliation,” Sanders said. “The Fairfield Museum was started by United Church people as a way of honouring the history of this area and there’s been a long conversation about wanting to work more closely with the neighbouring First Nation knowing there’s more history to be named and to be honoured, and our church has made commitments about reconciliation. We’ve renounced the doctorate of discovery, we’ve endorsed the UN declaration and endorsed the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission, but today we got to do something to actually live those commitments out. It’s a proud day and it’s the beginning of a new era and new form of relationship that we celebrate,” she added at the signing ceremony. Stonefish said the land the Fairfield Museum is on, the site of the original settlement, encompasses about 10 acres on the Thames River, right across the river from the current Eelunaapeewi Lahkeewiit (meaning The Place of the Original People) settlement. The people had to leave the Fairfield settlement in 1813 when fleeing American soldiers burned down the village, and they moved across the river to where the current settlement is. Fairfield has been operated for the past 74 years as a historic park and museum by the United

Church of Canada. Fairfield is one of the region’s oldest settlements, established in May, 1792 by Eelunaapeewi Lahkeewiit ancestors and the Moravian missionaries who lived among them for generations. Stonefish said the village at that time was a hub and rest stop, with a church and school. Once the transfer of the Fairfield site and property north of Longwoods Road that is an ancestral burial site for the Delaware Nation is complete, Stonefish said her council will work to establishing an interpretive centre. “We know that the museum has been here for many years, but it is just housing the artifacts and maybe a little bit of the history. She said that will include the relationship and the history established with the Moravian missionaries, the Methodist Church and the United Church. “We were always referred to as Moravian Indians and we weren’t; we were Delaware Indians as named by Lord Delaware, but we wanted to be able to put our lan-
guage on who we are as a people,” the chief said about the name change from Moravian to Eelunaapeewi Lahkeewiit. The community celebrated the historic signing with drumming and singing by the Little Bear Singers and a luncheon at the community centre with traditional singing and dancing.

Students publish own books Students in a Grade 1-2 class at St. Ursula’s Catholic School in Chatham had the chance to know what it’s like to be a published author thanks to a computer program and a little help from local authors. Lia Dolfi, class teacher, said they used a free computer program called Story Jumper Quality Windows, to write books in either a narDoors & Sunrooms rative or recount style. “We spent a lot of time learning what narratives are and recounts, and as you can appreciate, they are only in A+ Rated By The Better Business Bureau Grade 1 and 2 so they had to learn to write first and learn what punctuation is,” Dolfi OVER 23 Years of explained at the open house for the students to showcase Proven Excellence ! their work recently. They are more popular than the books written by known authors,” the teacher noted. “These guys are really excited to have their books in the library.” Parents were invited to the open house in the library where the students were gathered to read and showcase the books they had written. Dolfi said some students had some difficulty coming up with a concept and editing rewrites, but “even though they were frustrated, they never gave up because they knew what the end goal was.” The teacher said it helped having local authors come in and talk to the students about the writing process before they began the 10-week project from rough copy to divided pages to matching pictures. Where it belongs The return of the Fairfield settlement lands to the Delaware First Nation people by the United Church of Canada on Friday was historic in more ways than one. The signing ceremony between the Eelunapeewi Lahkeewiit (Delaware) First Nation Chief Denise Stonefish and the United Church of Canada was many years and many discussions in the making. Both sides of the table will tell you they met with patience and mutual respect, and the people who first settled that piece of land in 1792 were not walking away until their ancestral lands were once again under the Delaware Nation banner. The hurt and damage left behind from residential schools, where First Nations children were forced to give up their traditions, culture and spirituality to conform to Christian beliefs and values will never be forgotten, but the Call to Action of the federal Truth and Reconciliation Commission has made a start in healing relationships. The United Church of Canada has shown its commitment to healing and forging a new, mutually respectful relationship with First Nations neighbours with the signing over of the Fairfield settlement lands – putting words into action - and they set an excellent example for all religious denominations about living in peace with all people. With plans for an interpretive centre that will chronicle the journey the Delaware Nation people took to arrive in this area, our entire community – and visitors – will get a better understanding of the deep roots the Eelunapeewi Lahkeewiit have on that stretch of land on the banks of the Thames River between Thamesville and Bothwell. Most people weren’t aware that the name Moraviantown was not in reference to the Delaware First Nation settlers. The Moravian missionaries travelled to this area and helped settle the village with the First Nation people – and with the name change to Eelunapeewi Lahkeewiit, the community has taken back its ancestral heritage along with the land. Much respect to both sides at the signing ceremony for patience, understanding, communication and goodwill in righting a wrong from many years ago, that forges a strong bond based on mutual respect for the future.

Opinion
Property needs an inspection Sir: Since the closing of Navistar in Chatham, there have been rumours of soil contamination and what to do with the property, etc. From what I see (because I don’t know of the soil condition), the site is sadly empty and there is a need for Chatham to see that something is done for a number of reasons. First off, pretty soon their will be a casino up the street, with very little parking space (as far as I can see), but I can picture the area around there is
going to be golden for some businesses to be able to get some of sort of build-up piece of the action in the surrounding area. This should be a wakeup call to businesses to get a piece of the action, namely overflow from the Casino traffic and appropriate land use in that particular area would seem to be the Navistar property. I live only a few blocks away on Inshes Avenue and if I want to go to the casino, I can walk.
Not so for many of our citizens and they will have to park. There are plenty of eateries in that area, so that isn’t a problem, but overflow is overflow and businesses should be taking action if they want to get a piece of the action. I personally can’t do so as I have been around for some 76 years and I am not going to get involved but someone, and maybe the new mayor should be getting involved with discussions at council
meetings about getting that property assessed (no matter who owns it) and maybe purchasing it and getting soil samples to see what is in the grounds of the former truck plant and for the Chatham community for future building programs. That is an important area in Chatham, and I think I see what the casino sees in that property for the growth of Chatham. Jim Daley Chatham

Housing prices hit all-time high
By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
Home sales were down in April, but prices continued to climb, to the point the average sale price of a home in Chatham-Kent last month set a new alltime high. A total of 113 homes sold in Chatham-Kent in April, which is down 6.6 per cent from April of last year, and just two sales off the 10-year average for the month. Meanwhile, the average price for a home sold in April was almost $260,000. Steve Carroll, president of the Chatham-Kent Association of Realtors, said
a continued lack of inventory, coupled with high buyer interest, is driving up prices. So far this year, local realtors have sold 352 residential units. That’s down six sales from the same period a year ago. But the problem with the local market is inventory, or lack of it. There are fewer homes to sell these days. There were 186 new residential listings in April 2019. This was an increase of 13.4 per cent on a yearover-year basis but was still a below-average result for the month. A dearth of rental units is impacting inventory lev-
els as well. Carroll said the vacancy rate in the area is close to zero. “People have no place to go so they hesitate to put their home on the market,” he said. “The result is 240 listings as opposed to the 600 we traditionally have at this time of the year.” With the lower inventory, quick sales and multiple bid situations, Carroll said real estate agents helping folks purchase a home can get as frustrated as the buyer. “We go through the same situation they go through. You lose out on the bid and go through the whole process again. But there’s

really nothing we can do about that. It’s the market,” he said. The average price of homes sold in April 2019 was a record $259,683, jumping 18.7 per cent from April 2018. The more comprehensive year-to-date average price was $245,186, an increase of nearly 27 per cent from the first four months of 2018. Carroll said even putting a price tag on a home is difficult in this ever-increasing market. “You used to go back a couple of years and pull comparables (on prices of homes sold nearby).”

Concert raises $16,000
The Chatham Voice
A fundraiser by the Canniff family for the Children’s Treatment Centre Foundation of Chatham-Kent raised $16,000 towards the Butterfly Building Campaign. The proceeds from the Simply Queen tribute concert on April 27 at the Capitol Theatre will help build a larger, more accessible facility to better accommodate the growing caseload. The band, Simply Queen, performed all of the iconic songs that made Queen
one of the most legendary rock bands of all time, to a crowd that was on their feet for most of the show. Foundation director Greg Hetherington, along with Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent (CTC-CK) patron Carson Grail, opened the show with a Q&A about the band Queen. Due to the growing demand for specialized therapy for children with special needs in Chatham-Kent, the CTC-CK is building a larger, more accessible facility to better accommodate the grow-

ing caseload. The Butterfly Building Campaign will build a new 50,000 sq. ft. facility on McNaughton Avenue in Chatham.
Since building the current facility 34 years ago, the CTC-CK has grown from serving 224 in 1984
to now serving 3,200 children and youth in 2019 – that’s over a 1,000-percent increase in caseload.
By 2020, the CTC-CK will serve 4,500 clients – which is one in five Chatham-Kent children.
AFFORDABLE METAL ROOFING
Most small businesses often underestimate the power of advertising. If an ad in a local publication doesn’t bring customers banging down their front door or jamming their phone lines the very next day, then the ad is perceived to be a waste of money. This could not be further from the truth. Advertising takes time. Ads almost never create the urge to run out and use the advertised product or service (except for sales and limited time offers). Rather, a good ad is like a seed that is planted in the minds of customers, where it grows with more frequent visibility. This is especially true of ads for service, such as contract work or home repair. No one sees an ad for roofing and thinks, “Holy cow! I’ve got to go out and get my roof done right now!” No, a good ad placed in a local publication gradually reaches potential customers over time. When one of these customers does require your service, it is thanks to their repeated exposure to your ad that their initial impulse will be to think of you. Business owners who use this strategy understand that, “It is nice to be known, but it is even better to be seen and recognized!” Come see us at The Wednesday Market in Chatham on Wednesdays or visit our showroom:

Milner House opens for the 2019 season The Chatham Voice
This summer, listen to the music playing from the gramophone as you take a step back into the early 1900s at the Milner Heritage House. Step outside into the backyard and try your hand at hoop rolling, or challenge a friend to croquet. Whether you are playing games, looking through the stereoscope or being mesmerized by the moving pictures of the zoetrope, there is lots to see and do as you walk through the house where Robert and Emma Milner once lived.
Can you tell the difference between a photograph and Emma Milner’s pencil drawings? In celebration of Emma’s artistic talents, the Milner Heritage House is featuring a special exhibit Emma: A Life on Paper, curated by Anna Denys. Milner Heritage House is open for the 2019 season from now until Sept. 1 and is open Wednesday to Friday, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday to Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The historical home is located at 59 William St. N., Chatham. Admission is by donation.

Passport clinics set for C-K The Chatham Voice
Local MP Dave Van Kesteren’s office has announced a number of passport clinics between May and September in the Chatham-Kent Leamington riding. The first clinic takes place May 22 at the Sherk Centre in Leamington.
St. Michael’s Parish Hall in Ridgetown hosts the second one. It’s located at 26 George St. In Tilbury on July 17, the Knights of Columbus Hall on Dupuis Avenue will host a clinic. On Aug. 21, a passport clinic takes place at Glad Tidings Community Church just south of
Blenheim. And on Sept. 4, Blessed Sacrament Church on Victoria Avenue in Chatham is the site of the final clinic for the season. All passport clinics take place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. These clinics are staffed by volunteers who ensure that all forms are
filled out correctly and all required documentation is included in the applications. The clinics accommodate first-time applications as well as renewals and children’s passports. A photographer will also be on hand at each clinic to take passport photos, for a fee.

In Memoriam
John Majek - May 9th, 2018 Thinking of and missing you every day. This is your favourite time of year. The days getting warmer, the wheat growing taller and greener, cultivating ground and taking pride by planting each and every bean and corn seed giving it the best possible start. Your hard work and dedication came with blood, sweat and tears but was always strongly conquered by the safe joyful harvest, great friends and nature, the river, dances, food, music and prayer. Looking up to you and more and more.
In Memoriam Mary Jane Wright May 15, 1950 - Aug. 25, 2017 A Special Smile A Special Face A Part of Our Family We Can Never Replace Loved and missed by all your family Obituary Midnight Schofield 2015-2019
Heavenly Nap You lived your nine lives here with me my loyal, loving friend, Then God took you up to Paradise to live life number ten. I’ll bet you’re peacefully lying upon an angel’s lap. Purring there, without a care having a heavenly nap. I’ll miss you for a little while, but our friendship will not end. Time will pass, and then at last you’ll be on my lap again.

We Appreciate Our Police
Every day, our nation’s police officers put their lives on the line to protect our neighborhoods and keep us safe. They help our kids when they’re lost. They’re on call at all hours of the night to mediate the worst domestic disturbances. They do all the legwork that drives a successful conviction when the law has been broken. The positive impact of their service and dedication to our communities and our country is invaluable, and we owe them the full measure of our respect and gratitude. During National Police Week, this May 12 - 18, let’s shout a big Woot! Woot! to the more then 69,000 Canadian police officers who carry the badge and swear to keep us safe. It’s not easy to be a crime-fighter and police officer. On a daily basis, officers witness the heart-wrenching destitution and violence experienced by the homeless, the mentally ill and the substance-addicted. They console the parents of missing children and investigate criminal acts. They see the tough side of life that wears people down and that many lucky people in our cities and towns never have to deal with. But worst of all, they battle negative public perception in the very streets they patrol. During National Police Week, wave and give a friendly smile to a police officer. And remember that they are our front-line buffers between safety and chaos.
