Meet Rob Myers By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
Sarah Schofield/The Chatham Voice
Chatham’s Rob Myers, the main force behind RM Sotheby’s and RM Classic Cars, opened up to The Chatham Voice recently.
Rob Myers looks back on 40 years of car restoration with a smile. This is the man who basically started with nothing more than a dream, and has built up auto restoration and auction businesses that do more than half a billion dollars a year in sales. Myers grew up with an interest in anything with wheels and a motor. In 1976, he essentially flipped the ignition to
start on his ride into entrepreneurship. “I did it out of my pants pocket,” he said. “I started painting motorcycles. I’m a bit of an artist.” He expanded to a onecar garage shortly thereafter. “I’d buy the odd bit of junk, take it and fix it,” Myers said. In 1979, he opened a dedicated restoration and sales facility, RM Auto Restoration. He recalled one of his first “big” jobs. Continued on page 4

IPM fills the furrows The Chatham Voice
The 2018 International Plowing Match and Rural Expo (IPM 2018) has given more than $80,000 to local charities, service clubs and not-for-profit organizations across Chatham-Kent. The presentation ceremony, called Filling the Furrow – IPM 2018 Donation Night, took place June 13 at the banquet hall of the Ken Houston Memorial Agricultural Centre in Dresden. Overall, 115 cheques were presented. The money is the first round of funds generated by the IPM 2018 that was host-
ed last September near Pain Court by the Ontario Plowmen’s Association and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent with a Chatham-Kent citizens’ executive committee. When combined with the work of local service club members at IPM 2018, the value of donations to the community rises to more than $105,000. In addition, members of about 50 IPM 2018 community committees and 1,000 volunteers donated their time and efforts to make IPM 2018 a success. The Ontario Mutual Insurance Association, BMO Bank of Montreal and Hydro One were

century. Darrin Canniff, mayor of Chatham-Kent, said he looks forward to another 100 years from Enbridge. “Enbridge is a critical piece of the community moving forward. We want to see people pros-

That involved restoring, painting and delivering a Model A Ford sedan to a local client, and making about $20,000 on it. Dan Warrener and Mike Fairbairn came on board as business partners in the mid-1980s. “They certainly helped build the company,” My-
ers said. RM Classic Cars soon became the biggest supplier of vintage vehicles for sale by the auto auction house Barrett-Jackson, Myers said. But after seeing how much others were making in selling cars RM had restored, the company expanded to RM Classic
Car Productions and got into the auction side of the business in the early 1990s. Sotheby’s, a global auction giant, came on board in 2015, further expanding the company’s reach around the world. Today, RM Sotheby’s has auctions in multiple U.S. locations, as well as sites in Europe, and this
year, the Middle East. It has offices in London, Italy, Florida, Los Angeles, Boston and Detroit. RM Sotheby’s sells hundreds of cars at auction each year, including some high-priced and rare wonders. A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO sold at Monterey last year by RM Sotheby’s fetched $48.4 million, at the time
the most valuable car ever sold at auction. The company also held top sales records for Porsche, Aston Martin and Mercedes-Benz last year. Not bad for a company led by a high school dropout from Chatham. Through all the rebuilds and restoration efforts, Myers and his team have
worked on a huge variety of vehicles, from American classics to European sports cars. He said he does not have a favourite vehicle, but two appear to be close to his heart. One is his 1957 red Mercedes-Benz 300 Roadster. He admits he drives it everywhere. Continued on page 5

“I love that. I drive it all the time. It’s one of my favourites,” he said “I drove it to California last fall, my wife and it. It’s kind of fun to pull into some hotels. Everybody’s there in their new Rolls Royces and new Lamborghinis and I pull in with that old thing and know it’s worth more than any of their cars.” Another car near and dear to Myers is a red 1963 Shelby 289 Cobra. It sits in his office/man cave these days, and you can see where some paint is flaking off the front end. “That’s what I like about it. It’s never had paint. It’s original paint,” he said. “I love original things.” The car is all original save for some upholstery work, he said. The car’s designer, Carroll Shelby, who passed away in 2012, was a close friend. “I sold his very first Cobra for $15 million (in 2016 at Pebble Beach),” Myers said. He also named his son Shelby after the auto leg-
end. Despite his globetrotting, Myers still and has always called Chatham-Kent home. “I can’t move my employees,” he said. “I’m here. We have employees who have been with me for years and years. You can’t move your employees.” Being “here” has led to Myers expanding his business assets to help cater to clients, while at the same time helping the community and feeding a “hobby.” He owns Retro Suites Hotel, a perennial award-winning boutique hotel in the heart of Chatham, with no two rooms alike, and some very quirky and unique decor. That includes paintings by the Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood and numerous auto-themed sculptures. Ever wonder where the two giant nutcrackers from FAO Schwarz in New York ended up? In Myers’ hotel lobby. “My hotel is my hobby,” he said. “I have fixed up a lot of old buildings
downtown. I didn’t do it to make money. I like to collect junk.” Myers admits it’s a bit eccentric. “And I also needed a place for all my clients to stay.” In fact, it was a visit from a client that started him down his path in the hospitality industry. “I had this super rich guy from California come here years ago and I was restoring his car for him that I knew would win Pebble Beach (Concours D’Elegance) in 2001. He and his wife came to Chatham and I had to put him in one of the other hotels here. They didn’t mind, but I thought, ‘How nice would it be if I could host them in a really nice place?’ That was one of my reasons for building it,” he said. Retro Suites doesn’t just serve Myer’s clients, but rather it’s a tourist destination as illustrated by its many awards with Trip Ad-

Rob Myers’ business interest spread around the world, but he still calls Chatham-Kent home, for himself and his business headquarters.
visor, and it hosts many a local event. This year, Myers said it will hold 50 wedding receptions. He shot down rumours that the likes of Jay Leno and Nicholas Cage have stayed at the Retro Suites over the years, but did admit his buddy Bob Ritchie – Kid Rock – has enjoyed the accommodations there. As for whether we’ll see Kid Rock this weekend, Myers just grins.
“Imagine Bob riding a mechanical elephant at the front of Friday’s parade,” he said. “That would be a sight.” As for the weekend’s festivities, Myers has preached “chaos.” He wants the downtown packed with classic cars and thousands of spectators. He hopes it will be one heck of a bash for local residents, RM staff and customers.
“I’m 40 years in business. I’ve had some of the same clients since the beginning. Some have never been to Chatham. Why not invite some of those VIPs here?” Myers said. Looking back, he admits it’s been a heck of a crazy ride doing what he loves. “I’ve been very fortunate to be allowed to do this. Every day I wake up and go, ‘Holy (expletive deleted), how did this happen?’”

Answers needed now
When it comes to the water well issues faced by an ever-increasing number of home owners in north Chatham-Kent since construction began on wind turbines, it seems the people have reached their saturation point with government stalling on the issue. As stated in our story on page 9 of this edition, the lack of answers from Queen’s Park on when the people can expect to see a health hazard investigation into the potential hazards of drinking well water contaminated with toxic black shale has reached a breaking point. The people in Chatham-Kent received a promise, in writing, more than a year ago from the man who would be premier, Doug Ford. He campaigned that, if elected, he would immediately call for a full health hazard investigation into safety of the contaminated well water. And the people believed it. They had two members, MPP Monte McNaughton and MPP Rick Nicholls, on their side before the election, and now – crickets. “Immediate” to most people means right away, not over a year later with no report in sight. Essex MPP Taras Natyshak, when questioning the lack of action in the Legislature earlier this month, struck a chord when he said the government has its priorities wrong. How is buck-a-beer and making alcohol available in corner stores more important than the health concerns of a large group of people? It can be likened to Marie Antoinette telling the starving people to eat cake, when they had no food for their families. Beer instead of water is not the answer to the problem, and safe drinking water should be the first priority, not the last. If a report from Ontario Public Health and Cancer Care Ontario acknowledges environmental factors in the increased incidence of cancer in Ontario, including ingesting arsenic which is known to be in black shale, it is time for our government to take care of people’s health first, and worry about if they have easy access to alcohol later. It’s been over a year. The time for answers is now.

Opinion
Happy with use of our tax dollars Sir: I have been reading Rob Hakker’s letters on our local taxes and it made me stop and think. I thought about it when I took out my garbage bin and recycling. Trucks came along and picked it up, paid by my taxes. I thought about it when I passed an accident and the police were there sorting things out and directing traffic. I thought about it when the ambulance picked up my mother and took her to the hospital. I thought about it as I watched construction crews fix my street. I thought about it when I drove over the new Fifth Street Bridge. I thought about it when I went through the new animal shelter. In the winter, our streets get plowed and the rural
roads are cleared so school buses can get through. I’m sure that there are a multitude of others things that our tax dollars are spent on that I don’t know about but benefit the citizens of Chatham-Kent. I looked it up; Chatham-Kent is 2,458 square kilometres and is the 12th largest municipality by area in Canada. There are 27 medium and small communities other than Chatham and Wallaceburg. They all want services in their communities. Chatham-Kent has approximately 850 bridges and thousands of kilometres of roads, including Victoria Road, Longwoods Road and Talbot Trail, which were
downloaded to the municipality by the Conservative government in 1998. They all need to be maintained and cleared of snow. I suspect that the cost to do this would be a surprise to most of us. The population in Chatham-Kent is 101,000, which means that there are only 45 people per square kilometre. There are only 46,000 private dwellings. Not a great number of properties to get property tax from. I can’t speak to the problems that businesses have financially in doing business in Chatham-Kent, but they also get the same services. In fact, I believe that economic development has been working to provide as much support as they
can under the provincial municipalities legislation. From my point of view, I believe council has been fairly frugal, not that I have agreed with every decision but passed by a majority council vote. More than eight councilors have to pass a budget and authorize spending; that’s democracy. By the way, the councilors pay property taxes; some are also business owners and are affected by both their home and business taxes. I would think that they would take that into consideration during their deliberations. I think I’m getting good value for my tax dollar in Chatham-Kent. Brian Sharp Chatham
What would you do in this situation? Sir: If your roof leaks like a sieve; if your windows are outdated, drafty and falling out; if accessibility is lacking; and if your HVAC system is on its last legs, would you go on a long cruise or perhaps build a swimming pool in your backyard?
Well, this is the exact scenario that is playing out at the Civic Centre, a.k.a. city hall. The building is 42 years old with the only renovations done in 1999 for amalgamation. The HVAC system failed over a dozen times
last year. This was brought to the council’s attention with a report on lack of accessibility, but the issue was deferred for future study. But council is looking into spending millions on a twin arena sports complex.
At this time, what is more important, fixing existing buildings and infrastructure or a sports complex that most of us will never be able to afford to use? What would you do? Bruce Thompson Chatham

Board hands out commendations
By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com
A group of Chatham-Kent police officers responsible for the successful Project Fresh drug bust received commendations from CKPS Chief Gary Conn at a recent Police Services Board meeting. According to Conn, the CKPS Intelligence Unit started Project Fresh in October 2018 to address drug and property crimes in specific areas in Chatham-Kent. The project involved both undercover officers and human sources over the course of four months of investigative work. “As with any drug investigation, there is never any guarantee of success, regardless of how exhaustive the preparations may be. In this case, the investigators and investigation were both successful,” Conn said during his presentation. “Over the course of the project, there were six search warrants executed, 19 arrests, 82 charges and over $3.2 million in controlled drugs seized.” The commendation was given to eight members of the Intelligence Unit for “excellent team work, perseverance and professionalism.” Also at the board meeting, Conn gave Chief’s Commendations to 17 officers involved in the Walter Ardis homicide investigation from 2016 for the work in the successful conclusion of the case that saw the accused arrested and remanded to an appropriate medical facility. The Chatham-Kent Airport staff – Manager Marion Smith, and staff members Missy Randall and Eric Dilliott, were also given commendations for assistance given to the CKPS in December 2018 to house the Mobile Command Unit until the Dillon Road project could be completed. At the board meeting as well, were the two high school students who were win-

Most small businesses often underestimate the power of advertising. If an ad in a local publication doesn’t bring customers banging down their front door or jamming their phone lines the very next day, then the ad is perceived to be a waste of money.
This could not be further from the truth. Advertising takes time. Ads almost never create the urge to run out and use the advertised product or service (except for sales and limited time offers). Rather, a good ad is like a seed that is planted in the minds of customers, where it grows with more frequent visibility. This is especially true of ads for service, such as contract work or home repair. No one sees an ad for roofing and thinks, “Holy cow! I’ve got to go out and get my roof done right now!” No, a good ad placed in a local publication gradually reaches potential customers over time. When one of these customers does require your service, it is thanks to their repeated exposure to your ad that their initial impulse will be to think of you. Business owners who use this strategy understand that, “It is nice to be known, but it is even better to be seen and recognized!”

Book addresses damage caused by criticism By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com
“…for I am amazing in so many ways! Too bad you can see it with your short-sighted gaze. Go broaden your horizon! Expand your mind’s view! Your limits on me are reflective of you!” – Excerpt from “Too” by Susan Nuttall After years of working with people in the probation system in Chatham-Kent, author Susan Nuttall has many insights into human behaviour and how criticism can have a crippling effect on a person’s sense of worth. Now retired after 32 years as a probation officer, Nuttall has published her first illustrated children’s book, “Too,” that encourages people of all ages to value their uniqueness and celebrate their differences. The launch of her book took place earlier this
month in Chatham to a large turnout of people, and Nuttall took some time to talk to The Chatham Voice about her inspiration and experience in publishing her first book. The author said in her experience working with people, young and adults alike, their perception of criticism that told them they weren’t enough was a focal point throughout their lives. Changing that perception of themselves by looking beyond the words to the person behind them, she said, is key to having a healthy self-image. “When talking about criticism they endured, they could tell you who said it, how old they were, where they were and the effect it had on them, so words have power,” Nuttall explained. “I thought the best way to reach children, or adults, was to write a book to tell them, ’You are amazing just the
way you are,’” the author said, pointing to words she put on the back of her new book. She noted that in society today, if you don’t achieve the highest accolades for achievement, you’re perceived as not good enough, which is an attitude that needs to stop. She believes if people who endure criticism feel like they have achieved something good just the way they are, they will appreciate the uniqueness of others. “I’m very passionate about it, because having seen people profoundly affected by criticism, I thought if we can change people’s mind, then we can change their action. That’s what we learned from probation – change the mind, change the action or reaction,” Nuttall shared. She said she published the book with the hope of changing a child’s mind, or an adult, because she

said people of all ages suffer the effects of criticism. In one instance, her book is being used as a counselling tool to help people value their own worth. “I don’t know where it’s going to go; it’s pretty new, but it’s my hope that people are going to use the book to inspire themselves to appreciate their own uniqueness, and in doing so, they can appreciate others,” Nuttall explained. The book, Too, illustrated

by Mark Uhre, and published by Friesen Press, is a colourful, easy-to-read and inspiring offering by Nuttall that will appeal to people of all ages. It encourages the reader to take a good look at the source of criticism in their life and know soul-deep that it is just another person’s brief, unfounded view of you. “The words resonate, I think, with all of us, and it’s not limited to children. I think it has a wide range of attraction to people, which I didn’t expect,” the author said. “I wrote it years ago, after reading an article on Denzel Washington and I was annoyed to think that people had to put up with that kind of criticism and I just said, ‘Enough;” these people are profoundly impacted by your ugly words.” “I want to say to people who criticize that your words have a long-lasting impact on another individ-
ual,” she added. “Personally, I think we should be inspiring people instead of holding them back, because ultimately, when you inspire someone to reach their goals, they pull you up with them.” An important message in our Canadian society, Nuttall noted, is that we have to appreciate things such as cultural and gender differences, in order to get along and make it work. The author was thankful for the tremendous support she received from family and friends who encouraged her to publish the book, with more to come in the future. Nuttall’s book is available on amazon.ca or amazon.com, at Barnes and Noble or by going to www.snuttall.ca. The author will also be at RetroFest in Chatham on June 22, reading in the Children’s Tent.

Well water proponents won’t give up By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com
The contingent of people who headed to Queen’s Park recently to demand answers about a promised health hazard investigation are disappointed with the government’s response but are not giving up. Former Water Wells First member Kevin Jakubec went to Toronto with Essex MPP Taras Natyshak and Dover residents Marc and Marilynn St. Pierre to find out when the government was going to get them answers on the toxicity of the well water contaminated by black shale particles, known to contain heavy metals. Also in attendance was Dr. Joel Gagnon, head of the GLIER heavy metals lab at the University of Windsor. Natyshak asked Premier Doug Ford when his government was going make good on his promise to call for an “immediate” health hazard investigation into water wells clogged with sediment after construction began on wind turbines in Dover and Chatham township areas.

Residents in North Kent are still waiting for the provincial government’s health hazard investigation into their well water issues.
Minister of Infrastructure and MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex Monte McNaughton responded to the question in the Legislature, saying he was working with the Ministry of Health “very closely” on the issue of a health hazard investigation into the well water situation in Chatham-Kent and information on the matter would be forthcoming. Natyshak, however, said
the government has had a year to get answers for the people living with black shale particles in their well water, and demanded a direct answer. “I know he’s dodging the question and more importantly, his own community knows he’s dodging the question,” Natyshak said in his rebuttal. “This is about priorities … and
this is a government that prioritizes access to beer over access to clean drinking water.” Jakubec, while no longer a spokesperson for WWF, has continued to work in the background on getting answers to how toxic the black shale particles are to humans, and ways to try and filter out the black shale. As he uncovers more and more research into environmental causes of diseases such as cancer and the direct link to ingestion of heavy metals like arsenic, which is found in black shale, his frustration level with lack of government action is increasing. “That Monte (McNaughton) dodged the question about the health hazard investigation is particularly upsetting to cancer survivors, who are highly susceptible to getting cancer again,” Jakubec said in an interview. “This can’t be delayed any longer. The report from Public Health Ontario and Can-
cer Care Ontario is very clear – Ontarians are getting cancer from environmental sources (Environmental Burden of Cancer Report, 2016).” “Cancer survivors are very upset the Medical Officer of Health (Dr. David Colby) has not taken a more pro-active stance (on toxic black shale) given his Fellowship in Cancer Research (Department of Pathology, University
of Western Ontario, 19851986),” Jakubec continued. “Cancer survivors expected that a medial officer of health who has cancer research on his resume would have done more for the community.” Jakubec said they would continue to ask questions about the health hazard investigation into the toxic black shale until the government makes good on its promise.

Roadwork near Thamesville Bridge The Chatham Voice
Victoria Road will have reduced lanes 400 metres north and south of the Thamesville Bridge for about five weeks this summer. Work will begin June 24. The lane reduction area includes the intersections of Victoria Road and Magnavilla Line and Victoria Road and Norton Line. The reduced lanes will have a maximum width of 3.25 m (10.5 feet) so vehicles and loads wider than 3.25 m will not be permitted during this period. Vehicles requiring greater widths will be required to use Kent Bridge Road over the Thames River or Little John Road over the Thames River. The reduced lanes are required in
order to complete the construction of the new roadway where it merges with the existing roadway. Once this work is completed, the newly constructed Thamesville Bridge will be open for public travel and the existing bridge will be closed. The demolition of the existing bridge will commence in the fall of 2019 and be completed by December 2019.

The guy is pretty cool I’ve lived in Chatham since May of 2001. In that time, I’ve crossed paths with Rob Myers – the “RM” in RM Auto Restoration and RM Sotheby’s – a handful of times. Those included various press events, at Bike Fest when he was out with his cute granddaughter, or while touring South Kent with his daughter in his 1957 Mercedes coupe – picture Rob trying to get flats of berries into the trunk of that car. But until I sat down to interview him about RM’s 40th anniversary celebrations earlier this spring, I never had a chance to just talk to the man. He was pretty much exactly how I expected him: loud, proud and a bit of a conundrum – at times very humble, and at others, somewhat arrogant. Let’s face it, with what Rob has done with his business, whom he has met and done deals with over the years, and what he’s done with a section of downtown Chatham, he has earned the right to those character traits. He regularly rubs elbows with the rich and famous, and with the rich and not so famous. Rob’s nouveau riche, a compliment in my books. He didn’t inherit his wealth, but instead busted his butt for years to get where he is today atop the auto restoration and classic auto auction fields. He has earned everything; it wasn’t handed to him. How can you not respect that? It’s hard to get a feel for Rob’s reach in the automotive world, until you step into his office/man cave. When I did that earlier this spring, I was immediately greeted by the strangest rear ends of three cars that I’d ever seen. You could tell they were related, as they all had swept rear fenders that curled around the back of each vehicle. I walked around to the front to see each was built by the same company, Alpha Romeo. They are B.A.T. cars – B.A.T. 5, B.A.T. 7 and B.A.T. 9 to be exact. It turns out, they were prototypes in the quest to create cars with the lowest possible drag coefficient. B.A.T. stands for Berlinetta Aerodynamica Tecnica. And in successive years, these cars were showcased at the Turin Auto Show – in 1953, ’54 and ’55. And then I realized these are the only such vehicles ever produced. Three of a kind, yet three one of a kinds; built by an Italian sports car company more than 60 years ago. And they are sitting in a man cave in Chatham.
Bruce Corcoran That’s how deep Rob Myers is into the auto world. As for what Rob is to Chatham-Kent, it was disheartening to hear some folks on social media complaining, asking why everybody was so accommodating to one man and why the concerts weren’t free this weekend. Well, as part of the RM40 weekend, Myers and company want to raise funds for three charities. It’s hard to do that with free concerts. As to why the municipality and others want to accommodate RM Sotheby’s so much, this is an organization that could operate literally anywhere in the world. It has 180plus employees, most of who work here in Chatham-Kent. RM’s many clients are a globally diverse group. When they come here to check on progress on their vehicle restoration, Rob wanted them to have a rather unique place to stay, so he opened the Retro Suites boutique hotel. It is an award-winning hotel and is a bit of a tourist destination on its own as a result. But it also caters to many local events. In fact, Rob has fixed up a nice chunk of King Street downtown. The backs of these buildings have a South Beach (Miami) feel to them as well. Very unique, and located here. Rob Myers does a great deal for Chatham-Kent. He has only a small window in which his staff are available to partake in the celebrations and this coming weekend was the best time. Is he supposed to put on such an event when his people can’t even be here due to requirements for auctions around the world? Um, no. So, yes, the municipality worked to accommodate. But it isn’t for one man. It’s for his employees, his customers, everyone who utilizes the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, has children who need help through the Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent, and who may have a friend or loved one who will pass through the C-K Hospice. That’s pretty much everyone in Chatham-Kent. Yeah, we can bend over backwards to help accommodate him. In fact, it’s the least we can do.

Bass tourney returns for sixth year By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
Organizers of the sixth annual Mitchell’s Bay Open Bass Tournament have as many anglers as they can handle, but they want to pump up the number of spectators on hand for the weigh-in events Tom Beaton, co-chair of the event, said they actually had their full compliment of competitors two days after last year’s event ended. This year, the July 5 and 6 event will see 80 boats take to the water. Beaton said Mitchell’s Bay simply can’t accommodate any more. “We are constrained by the size of the marina and the parking area,” he said. There are another 15 boats – 30 anglers – on a waiting list. Last year, 78 boats took part, and before that 68. The continued rise in participants began after the second year, where it was feared the event would fizzle out. Beaton said the first year they organized the event, 28 boats took part, but a year later, there were just 21. “It seems these tournament guys don’t like fishing one-offs (one-time tournaments). They want to know it’s going to be there,” he said. The Open isn’t going anywhere. But it would benefit from additional spectators. “We want to focus on giving back to the spectators,” Beaton said. There will be giveaways to the attending public, including a paddleboard valued at $600. All you have to do to qualify is be at the final weigh in with a free ticket. Beaton said past events have had between 800 and 1,000 people attend the weigh ins over the two days of the event. He hopes the giveaways will bring more. As for the continued popularity of the Open from the anglers’ perspective, Beaton points to Lake St. Clair. “It’s a bass factory,” he said. It also helps to have 50-plus volunteers on hand to help take
PAGE 11
care of every detail, including hosting a pre-tournament dinner and kids fishing experience on the Saturday. The event and volunteers also provided all the ice needed to cool the live wells in each boat and even snacks for the anglers. Then there is also the $45,000 in prizes, paid out to the top 10 finishers. “They love our tournament and are happy to be here,” Beaton said. That despite some strict rules, as each boat is checked each morning to ensure its live wells are operating, there are no fish in the wells, and the boat’s kill switch is functioning. Beaton said all the Canadian anglers taking part are from Ontario, but the U.S. participants can come from a little further away, as they have anglers registered from Kentucky, Ohio and Michigan. They include Ohio’s Steve Clapper, who is in the U.S. National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame. “It’s his third year. He loves coming here,” Beaton said. Beaton said the tournament is a live-release event, with the live-release vessel licensed under the Ministry of Natural Resources. He added the boat’s operators have a duty to report if there is too high of a fish mortality rate.

A full slate of 80 boats will blast off this year for the sixth annual Mitchell’s Bay Open Bass Tournament.
“If we ever were to see a mortality rate of over five per cent, we could be highly scrutinized by the Ministry of Natural Resources,” Beaton said. “Last year, there were 665 fish caught with a 99 per cent successful release rate.” The average fish weight last year was 3.44 pounds, and the largest caught weighed in at 5.86 pounds. The winning team’s 10 fish weighed a combined 50.7 pounds. “That’s the biggest weight for 10 fish we’ve seen so far,” Beaton said. As for the aforementioned kids’ fishing experience, the Open will one again cater to 20 kids for a day to remember. Beaton said the qualifying kids will receive a morning of on-the-water fishing to introduce the children to the sport of angling. All will go
home with their own new tackle box, plus a rod and reel. “A lot of these kids have never fished,” Beaton said. “We also
have a lunch for them and their families. Some of the past testimonials from them have been really emotional.”

Event aids Shriners Hospitals The Chatham Voice
A Chatham teen turned his favourite sport into a fundraiser in recognition of the care received at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Canada. While many Canadian kids are slapping hockey pucks around, Ethan

To date, Ethan has organized five annual Toques and Mittens Bonspiels, taking place at the Chatham Granite Club in Chatham, raising $20,000 in total. “Organizing a Bonspiel is a lot of work,” said Ethan, “but when people learned we were raising funds for Shriners Hospitals for Children, we heard a lot of positive comments. ‘Shriners do such great things for kids! And, Shriners make miracles happen…’” The Toques and Mittens Bonspiel has attracted curlers from across the province and as far away as Ohio. It is

a unique event where friends and families can play together in a fun and friendly but competitive way. The bonspiel has seen payers of all ages and abilities; including provincial champions, new curlers, and visually impaired curlers. Both Hobbs brothers are grateful patients. Ethan and his older brother Eric were treated at the Shriners Hospital for Children – Canada. Without the care given to her sons, life would be much different today, Woodrow said. Ethan has pes planus, or flat feet, a very painful condition, and Eric was treated for idiopathic scoliosis, or curvature of the spine. “We have been very fortunate, because without
the Shriners Hospital, Eric would have been facing major life-altering surgery and Ethan would have had difficulty walking,” Judy said. “I am proud of my accomplishments. I am proud to be sponsored by the Ahcom Shriners Club and I am grateful to the Mocha Shriners for sponsoring my brother,” said Ethan. “It is an honor to be known as ‘A Kid Helping Other Kids.’” Today, Ethan is completing Grade 11 while his brother Eric only has one year to go at McMaster University. Eric continues to be active as a recreational volleyball player while at university studying business, accounting, and math. Ethan is a curler on the Chatham-Kent Secondary School team, and is an Ontario scholar.

A: Just to be clear a “power of sale” is when a homeowner defaults on their mortgage, the bank can take steps to sell the property to recover the money that’s owed to them. It seems to be a common misconception that power of sale properties are sold at a “fire sale” discount. But, in reality the lender is required to take reasonable steps to get market value for

Real Estate FAQ’s Q: I can get a really good deal if I buy a power of sale because the bank just wants to get rid of it right?

the property. It can still be worthwhile to buy a power of sale, but there are a few complications that you should be aware of. First of all, the property is sold “as-is.” The lender won’t know whether the basement has a history of flooding or if there are other hidden defects in the home. In a normal transaction you can ask the seller detailed questions about the condition of the property, and you can request that they repair certain issues as part of the deal. But that’s not possible with a power of sale—any repairs will be your responsibility after
What is missing ?
YOU!
Call your LOCAL REALTOR® today! Sponsored by you complete the purchase. With that in mind, a thorough inspection of the property is highly recommended. A home inspector, contractor, environmental consultant or structural engineer can identify underlying problems with the home’s major systems, like heating and cooling, electrical, foundation, and so on. In addition, when you make an offer on the property, you can make it conditional on your satisfaction with the results of the inspection. If the inspection uncovers a major issue, the clause may allow you to walk away from the deal.
The second issue involves the legal aspects of buying a power of sale home. If a tenant or the owner is still living in the property, that can be an additional challenge. A real estate lawyer can provide you with guidance on how to proceed. A legal review of the documentation from the bank is also a good idea, especially since the documents can be long and hard to interpret. The third twist involves timelines. The bank has procedures they follow when they’re considering offers, and their staff typically only handle offers during business hours. As a result, the offer
process may take longer than normal. Finally, the bank may also include a “right of redemption clause” that lets them call off the deal if the owner catches up on their mortgage payments before the sale closes. This rarely happens in practice, but it’s a good idea to find out if they will include the clause in the Agreement of Purchase and Sale. There are quite a few caveats to buying a power of sale home, but it can still be worthwhile. Understanding potential issues, and hiring the proper experts will go a long way.

RetroFest 2019
‘Crazy’ weekend planned By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
Organizers of the RetroFest element of the RM40/RetroFest weekend say all they need is a little help from Mother Nature to make the coming weekend a memorable one. Connie Beneteau of the Historic Downtown Chatham BIA said it’s shaping up to be a wild, fun weekend. “It’s crazy. If the weather works out this year, it’s going to be unbelievable,”
she said. Pre-registration numbers for classic car participants are double what normal numbers are. “And Chatham-Kent is historically a last-minute community,” Beneteau said of registration, which can also be done the day of the classic car showcase downtown. “A lot of them (the pre-registrants) are new for 2019.” A typical RetroFest sees 600 cars showcased in Chatham’s downtown core.

Participation could double Continued from page 17
Beneteau said that could more than double this year. “Again, depending on the weather, I think there will be an abnormal amount of cars this year,” she said. “We’re going to fill up every nook and cranny that we have.” For the Saturday show-
ing of the classic cars, Beneteau said organizers have snagged the parking lots on Thames Street that are near Third and Fifth streets respectively. They’ll be held until 11 a.m. to accommodate overflow for classic cars. That means less parking for spectators near the downtown, on a weekend
expected to see a big swell in those numbers as well. Beneteau recommends people take advantage of the shuttle bus system that will run on Saturday and park at the old Target parking lot. She said to check shuttle times on the website rm40th.com. The buses will bring spectators
down to Wellington Street. From there, they can walk through the downtown core, or hop on another shuttle out to RM where the Concours d’Elegance showcase of unique antique cars is taking place, as well as Art at RM, the vintage bike showcase at Duke’s Harley-Davidson, and more. For Friday’s Classic Car Cruise, with the expected abundance of classics, she said on top of the parking at the Bradley Centre on Richmond, they have access to two parking areas across the street at the for-
mer Navistar location. Prior to the cruise, there will be a food drive at the Bradley Centre benefitting Outreach for Hunger. There will also be a DJ and food on site, Beneteau said. The cruise itself heads through south Chatham
and out Fairview Line to Mull Road before returning along Pinehurst Line and Eighth Line and heading up Charing Cross Road/Queen Street back into Chatham to loop in the downtown core. Continued on page 21

Events galore in Tecumseh Park
This rather unique Volkswagen Bug was one of hundreds of classic vehicles on display at RetroFest 2018 in downtown Chatham. Thousands enjoyed the displays downtown and the family fun in Tecumseh Park. BIA officials expect an even better turnout this year with the RM 40th anniversary celebrations part of the event.

com. Beneteau said all the events are listed on the site, plus road closures in Chatham for the weekend. The expectation of seeing celebrities in town for the weekend is only adding to the interest, Beneteau said. “There’s the unknown of who will come. We know (TV host) Wayne Carini is coming, but other than that, we just don’t know,” she said. Tecumseh Park will be a hotbed of activities from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday as well. The Miss RetroFest event takes the stage at noon, followed by two live bands in the afternoon. There will be a beverage garden put on by the Chatham Kinsmen as well. There is also plenty for the kids and the kids at heart to enjoy, Beneteau said. Pony rides and a petting zoo will be handled by TJ Stables, the Chatham-Kent Library dome will feature special guest readers, there will be a kids’ paddle boat pool, a foam pit with big bubbles, adult runner ball for the young at heart, a zip line, a Zorb ball pool where people get inside giant balls, the Hagerty Test Garage where kids aged 2-6 an learn how to change a tire, a large Lego area, and a special

It will also be available in single cans at various locations through the 40th Anniversary weekend, including the Sam Roberts Band concert in Tecumseh Park on Friday. With the can design brought to life by RM Sotheby’s creative team, Sons of Kent head brewer Colin Chrysler took on the beer recipe development, nodding to the classics with a California Common Lager. This historical style was originally developed in the late 1800s in Northern California, where lager-style brewing was still a very new method outside of Germany.

But having played on the Holiday Train and on New Year’s Eve outdoors in Niagara Falls at “the world’s largest humidifier,” Roberts is familiar with playing in cold weather too.

Canadian rocker Sam Roberts looks forward to playing in Chatham Friday night, and possibly checking out some vintage vehicles beforehand. Roberts, when reached by The Chatham Voice this week, said he celebrated inking a recording contract by purchasing a classic car. “The first thing I did when I signed a record deal 20 years ago was go out and get a Mustang,” he said, referring to a 1966 Mustang GT. “It was in beautiful shape.” But years – and three kids – later, Roberts said he has since sold the vehicle. “I still have pictures of me in the front seat of that car. It will be good to see the cars this weekend and rekindle the flame.” Roberts looks back fondly on that vehicle. He said he shows pictures of him and the car to his children to show that “Dad used to be cool.” This from the front man in an iconic Canadian rock band that has produced such hits as “Brother Down,” “Don’t Walk Away Eileen,” and “Bridge to Nowhere.” It will be the third time the Sam Roberts Band will play in Chatham. He performed at The River Rock years ago, and was on the CP Holiday Train this past November. This time around, he’ll be playing Tecumseh Park. Roberts looks forward to playing outdoors. “Playing outside always seems to be fun. I think it’s because of winter, because we live in Canada,” he

Vavoulis enjoys the Myers challenge By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
Rob Myers is an idea man, and he needed someone to help lead the charge in turning those
ideas into reality for this weekend’s festivities. Enter Fannie Vavoulis, the chair of the events committee for the RM 40th anniversary celebration.

She said about a year and a half ago Myers began thinking about doing something to mark 40 years in business. But when the calendar flipped to 2019, that kicked into overdrive. “In January, it was full speed ahead,” she said. Myers asked Vavoulis, whose full-time job is as chief communications and community engagement officer at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, to lead the volunteers. She once worked for RM Classic Cars, so she has experience working with Myers. Vavoulis accepted the challenge. “For me, one of the great-
est things about working for Rob is he teaches you to think big and take risks,” she said. “There is mutual respect. He knows what buttons to push to make me go that much further. He has the intensity.” Myers has preached his desire for “chaos” in Chatham-Kent this coming weekend. He wants to jam Chatham’s core with classic cars and spectators, wants an over-thetop parade of one-of-kind vehicles, would love to make the three involved charities – the Children’s Treatment Centre of Chatham-Kent, the Foundation of CKHA and the Chatham-Kent Hospice

Enter the Sam Roberts Band and Big Sugar to rock the downtown Friday and Saturday nights. Add to that two life-sized mechanical elephants from the 1940 World’s Fair, numerous extremely rare vintage rides, and a pumped-up RetroFest. Myers’ Retro Suites hotel is booked solid this weekend with friends and clients, and Vavoulis said she believes all the hotels in Chatham are booked up as well. With so many ideas, she said trying to bring it all together was daunting. “At first, I wondered how we were going to pull this off,” Vavoulis said. “But we’ve had great volunteer support.” The event committee is comprised of about 15 volunteers as well as municipal representatives, and the additional subcommittees bring another 350-400 volunteers to the table. “You can’t pull this off without the support of so many,” Vavoulis said. “I will take credit for assembling ing | Dov w o T m a thvery driven the best team – |a Clot haof trecommunity.” n d e C l people in this a r u t | Postme url y

Camp offers fun summer adventure
By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com
Camp Vincent, a summer camp for kids near Bothwell, is gearing up for another season, beginning with a mini-week July 3-5. According to Camp Director Paige Butt, who has been busy with staff getting the grounds and cabins ready, the camp runs for seven weeks for kids who are Grade 1 up to 15 years of age, with different themes for each week. The non-profit, non-denominational camp is sponsored by the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and supplements the weekly costs for kids of families who need a little help with the fee.

The cost for camp is $325 per week per camper, with the sponsored fee of $280. There are 33 students hired each year to work as camp counsellors, and Camp Vincent Program Director Annielee Cameron, also known as Pixar, is on board this year, coming up with fun themes and games each week for the campers. Some of the themed weeks include the Great Canadian Road Trip, Game of Clue, Wild West,
