Medavie funds mental health partnership By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com

Young people and their families in Chatham-Kent will have timely access to Strongest Families Institute’s (SFI) skill-based distance mental health intervention services thanks to $300,000 in funding support from Medavie. The announcement was made June 20 at the annual general meeting of Chatham-Kent Children’s Services with SFI President and CEO Dr. Patricia Pottie and Don MacLellan, General Manager of Chatham-Kent EMS/Medavie EMS. To be offered in a twoyear partnership with Chatham-Kent Children’s

Services, SFI will help to reduce wait times for families with children or youth impacted by concerns, including behaviour challenges (ages three-12), anxiety (ages six-17) and nighttime bedwetting (ages five-12). SFI’s bilingual programs are designed to remove barriers to care, providing help to families in the comfort and privacy of their own homes at convenient times, when and where they need it. “We are deeply thankful to Medavie for their generous donation, to Kim Moran of CMHO for facilitating the connection to Chatham-Kent Children’s Services (CKCS), and to the leaders of CKCS for

embracing this partnership for their community,” Pottie said in a release. “This funding will provide quick access to SFI’s effective programs that promote good mental health early in life. Equipping young people and their families with life skills will significantly reduce mental health conditions now and into their future. “Our families tell us they use these skills long after SFI programs end. This means not only are we able to have strong impacts on wellbeing quickly, we can prevent downstream problems from occurring. Together, we will provide timely access to SFI services so that children, youth

and families in this community can lead happier, healthier lives.” At the meeting, Pottie used the example of a youth in New Brunswick who was moved around several foster homes and had behaviour issues. Af-

ter five months of using the program, Pottie said both the foster parents and the school saw a marked improvement in his attitude towards school, his grades and overall well-being. MacLellan, on behalf of

Medavie Health Foundation, said through the Foundation, Medavie supports community-based programs aligned with adolescent mental health, post-traumatic stress, and type 2 diabetes.

Home building on steroids

By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

In an effort to help alleviate the housing logjam in Chatham-Kent, Maple City Homes (MCH) officials showcased their latest project to officials and the media recently. MCH plans to build 380 homes in The Meadows, a new community in southwest Chatham. Carson Warrener, vice-president of sales for MCH and a real estate agent with Royal LePage, said the build will bring an estimated $150 million into the local economy. The houses will be between 1,200 and 1,700 square feet in size, with prices starting in excess of $300,000. “That’s at prices larger centres can only dream of having,” he said. “We’re open for living.” Warrener said the development is located less than three kilometres from the Bloomfield/Highway 401 interchange, making it desirable as a potential bedroom community for commuters as well. Gilles Michaud, an MCH partner, said the company is expanding quickly. It began with a trial build of 30 homes, and they completed that in 10 months, added Robb Nelson, another MCH partner. Michaud said they now

hope to build 100 homes a year, depending on the availability of labour. Stuart McFadden, director of economic development for the municipality, said the build is welcome news. “I don’t know how many times people have applied for positions here and their challenge is finding a home,” he said.

“I want to thank all the partners for investing in your community.” Nelson said the local economy is surging, but the availability of homes is holding things back. “The main need here is to be able to fill jobs,” says Nelson. “We are second in the province now for jobs posted and not filled - so that means our economy

is strong.” Mayor Darrin Canniff said the large-scale build is something the municipality has been missing for years. “Maple City Homes people are movers and shakers. They see a need and fill it,” he said. “Those 400 homes, that’s 1,000 people when you include families. They will fill part of

a school.” Nelson said he and the other MCH partners are embracing the large-scale project. “We’re still learning. Our suppliers are a big help,” he said, adding they try to use all local suppliers, contractors and labour whenever possible. “The end products for our clients are what we’re really

proud of.” Nelson said the construction of these homes should entice renters and existing homeowners to upgrade, relieving some of the pressures on starter home and rental markets. The first phase of The Meadows will see 93 homes built, injecting over $30 million into the local economy.

C-K resident gives too much The Chatham Voice

The Chatham-Kent municipal election audit committee has recommended no action be taken against a local resident who unwittingly exceeded the $5,000 limit for individual contributions in last October’s municipal election. Reginald MacDonald donated a total of $6,300 to six candidates, exceeding the limit by $1,300. MacDonald contributed $1,200 each to Michael Bondy, Darrin Canniff, Don Fuoco and Doug Sulman. He donated $1,000 to Alysson Storey and $500 to Frank Vercouteren. The committee wrote in its decision: “That after reviewing the report from the Clerk of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent,

hearing oral submissions from the Contributor and considering appropriate provisions of the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, it is the decision of the Compliance Audit Committee (Committee) that the Contributor contravened the contribution limits of $5,000 to two or more candidates for office of the same municipal council during the 2018 Municipality of Chatham-Kent Municipal Election as set out in section 88.34 of the Act. Based on the documentation and submissions before the Committee, the Committee finds the contravention not to be relatively significant, with the Contributor acting in good faith with no direct intention to contravene the Act and therefore

commencement of a legal proceeding against the Contributor for the contravention is not warranted.” Among the reasons for its decision is that: “The Committee has taken into consideration that the intention of the Province of Ontario was to ensure there would be contribution limits applied to those contributing to candidates beginning with the 2018 Municipal Election. However, the Act and guidelines, while clearly stating the contribution limits, are primarily candidate and voter focused. In fact, it is the candidate, under section 88.22(1)(r) of the Act who is to ensure that each contributor is informed of the contribution limits, and the guidelines suggest that this might be ac-

complished, for example, by issuing annotated receipts.” Further, “The Committee is satisfied that media and other publicity with respect to its meetings and deliberations will serve to increase awareness of the contribution limits, will have a deterrent effect, and will lead to the refinement of future election practices relating to contributors and, in particular, the aggregate contribution limit. With respect to increasing public awareness of this provision of the legislation, the Committee encourages the Clerk of the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to develop media releases and digital notifications for future municipal council elections.”

vie Health Foundation has committed more than $13.9 million to single and multi-year grant and partnership programs. “ C h a tham-Kent Children’s Services is excited to join this partnership, which will allow increased access to supports for children, youth and families in our communi-

ty. Our integrated service model will enable families from any of our service streams to be connected to the programs and resources available through Strongest Families. We are grateful for the directed donation from Medavie to Chatham-Kent. This is a great example of how we can work with a range of partners to strengthen families for a better future,” said Teri Thomas-Vanos, Executive Director of Chatham Kent Children’s Services.

According to Pottie, SFI’s evidenced-based programs are highly effective with a better than 85 per cent outcome success rate in overcoming presenting issues, and a less than 10 per cent attrition rate. In addition to helping children and youth effectively control their anxiety, impacts reported include improved school attendance/academic achievements, resolved bullying, improved family relationships, and reduced parental stress.

Canada Day events cancelled in ’Burg

Special to The Voice

Organizers for the Wallaceburg Canada Day Celebration regret to inform the community that the event scheduled for July 1, 2019 has been cancelled. A number of circumstances, beyond the control of the organizers, has led to the event being called off. “This decision was made with great dif-

ficulty, but given the situation, we felt it was the right move,” said Chris Glassford, this year’s organizer. “We believe Canada Day festivities are important to the community and are an event that many families and children look forward to every year. It is our hope that a Canada Day event can be held next year in Wallaceburg and for years to come.”

Funds raised for the Wallaceburg event will be donated to the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to be held in trust for the future use of Canada Day events in Wallaceburg. The festivities had been slated to take place at Kinsmen Park in Wallaceburg on Canada Day. Glassford encourages people to support and attend other Canada Day events in C-K.

Shoreline challenges discussed The Chatham Voice

A strong sense of community spirit will be a key element for Lake Erie residents facing the challenges of high water and erosion, according to a consultant and geoscientist Pete Zuzek who is leading the current Shoreline Erosion Study. Nearly 200 local residents attended two days of sessions that concluded in Erieau June 20 as part of the study examining the impact of current and future conditions on shoreline from Wheatley to Clear Creek “What we’ve learned

over the past two days is that we have a committed community of residents, landowners, the municipality and conservation authority who are all working together to find solutions,” Zuzek said in a media release. “It is imperative that we speak with one voice when we approach senior levels of government.” He said during the meetings residents were asked to provide input into the issue. “The idea that a consultant can come into a situation and develop a solution without input from the local communi-

ty simply doesn’t work. I’ve learned a lot during these sessions from the community, we will build on the community ideas, and I’m confident that we will develop a range of viable options for the long-term.” Chatham-Kent General Manager of Infrastructure and Engineering Services Thomas Kelly said compiling a solid database of scientific knowledge with local support is key.

“We will need funding from senior government for whatever approach we take,” he said. “We can’t get that unless we have done our homework and present a fact-based comprehensive plan.” Through the summer, the group plans to liaise further with Chatham-Kent Council and to meet with various ministries and agencies from senior levels of government. The group will

then provide feedback on draft management options to the community in September. Study recommendations will be made in December and the final report is due in March of next year. Kelly urged citizens to continue to monitor https://www.letstalkchatham-kent.ca/ chatham-kent-lake-erieshoreline-study for the most current information.

Zuzek said residents should remain vigilant about their property and monitor potential risks. They should stay involved and support the development of solutions. “We have some major challenges and tough decisions ahead of us but we must continue to work together to build a majority consensus for the best possible longterm solutions.”

CKHA changes approach to strokes

By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance officials say they’ve made improvements to how fast possible victims of stroke receive treatment. Lisa Northcott, vice-president at the CKHA, said

new best practices have been implemented this spring to accelerate the process. It begins with paramedics, who will notify the hospital when they have a patient who may have suffered a stroke. Northcott said they will call in when they are about five

Memorable weekend in C-K The busiest weekend ever in Chatham-Kent is now one for the history books, and what a weekend it was. From the RM 40th anniversary parade with Kid Rock sitting with RM’s Rob Myers as parade marshals, to the classic car cruise of hundreds of amazing vehicles, to the Thamesville Threshing Festival, to RM festivities, to the Erieau Parade of Dreams car show – the weekend was packed with people. Thankfully, the weather co-operated with mostly sunny skies and no rain. Chatham-Kent has never looked more vibrant and alive than it did this weekend. Pictures galore are turning up on social media from all the different venues, including Rob Myers playing the tambourine while Kid Rock and Sam Roberts looked on. We have photo pages in this week’s edition, and posted dozens more online. Be sure to check them out at www.chathamvoice.com Community pride is at an all-time high, and not just because Chatham-Kent hosted one heck of a party, but because the people behind it worked hard to make the weekend successful for locals and visitors alike. Myers and his team outdid themselves in pulling off an incredible weekend full of fun activities for everyone, and local charities won big thanks to the extra special events. Not only does Myers have a big wallet, he has a big heart to go with it, and has given more to this community and its citizens than can be acknowledged. He was everywhere this weekend; his pride in his company, his team and his community evident for all to see. RetroFest 2019 won’t be forgotten for a very long time, and the success of the weekend – for all of Chatham-Kent – is something not even the naysayers will find much to complain about. Too many people, too much noise, too much fun – bring it on, because Festival of Nations and our Canada Day celebration are next and hopefully people riding the high of RetroFest will come out and make this weekend a success as well.

Opinion

Some things never change Sir: I chose policing as a career in the UK in the 1960s. I went through my three-month training course and was assigned to a station in my home county constabulary. I loved my work. We did not carry guns and by and large were treated with respect. When I read the article in The Chatham Voice June 13, “Cops’ actions under review,” I could not help but smile but then scowl as I read what has been going on for decades. I was a “beat” officer, which meant I patrolled a certain area of the town on foot. Talking to residents, seeing children across the road and watching out for infractions. One day I was writing a parking ticket for two cars that were illegally parked in front of a building on a side street. Someone came out of a nearby office

and ran over to me and said. “That is the chairman of the council’s car.” I said that I did not care whose car it was as it was parked illegally. In a market town in the UK, parking in those days was at a premium, especially on market day, so we had to be strict about it. Later that day I was called into the Chief Superintendent’s office and he was holding the ticket I had issued. He asked me if I knew who owned the car and I replied in the affirmative. He then asked me to squash the ticket. I asked him about the other ticket on the other car and he said, “Oh you can let that stand.” I said, “No, I am sorry, sir, but the law is for everyone. If I get rid of one ticket, I get rid of both.” The Chief was not pleased but agreed.

I was a bit of a rebel in those days and I felt that being a police officer was my chance to practice the things my parents had taught me, such as truth, honesty, integrity and ethics. Later that year, one of my sergeants asked me to ticket all the cars parked in front of the police station and on down the street to the movie theatre. It was evening and not a lot of traffic. I really did not see the point, but did as I was told and ticketed everyone on the street starting with the sergeant’s private car. Naturally, a bit later that evening, the sergeant came to me waving the ticket I had put on his car. He was rather cross, actually he was furious, and asked me to squash the ticket, but I said, “Well, if I squash yours, I have to squash

them all. Fair is fair.” A lot of drivers got a free pass that evening and the sergeant was anything but pleased with me. Then there was the magistrate that fell out of his car drunk after hitting several parked cars. He was on the bench the next morning handing out fines for drunk driving to others less fortunate than him in terms of his office. I was offered a lot of freebies from merchants if I would look the other way, but I could not. Fair is fair. What is good for one is good for another. If you break the law, then take your punishment. I am sad to see it is still going on but what do I expect in a world no longer concerned with truth, honesty, integrity and ethics? Bridget Goldsmith Chatham

Voice actor up for international award By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com

A voice actor with Chatham-Kent’s Voices in the Wind audio theatre company is up for an international award. Georgia Lee Schultz, the lead actor in the Voices in the Wind audio production of “Cinderella,” is nominated for the Seneca Award for Best Leading

Actress. The Seneca Awards are handed out by Porchlight Family Media of Glendale, Ariz., David Farquhar of Voices in the Wind said. Schultz will be up against some of the audio industry giants. “For a little studio in Chatham-Kent to be nominated against these big production studios is

a very cool thing,” Farquhar said. “We’re up against some of the bigger production studios in the U.S., with Adventure In Odyssey and Lamplighter Theatre. It’s a really big thing for us.” Farquhar said the Senecas have different categories, such as best director, best supporting and lead actors and actresses, sound design, etc. He added he’s worked with Schultz, who hails out of St. Catharines, on four productions to date, including Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, Good Things Come, and now Cinderella. “She comes down here to do the recording,” he said. “She’s a very talented actress, very easy to

Back in 2009, Dresden’s Czech Hall president Al Kominek helped organize a 40th anniversary celebration for the 1969 music festival Woodstock. “We did it inside the hall and it was great,” he recalled. “I said I couldn’t wait until the 50th.” And Kominek has gone all out to deliver on the promise he made that night. On Aug. 16, one of the original dates of Woodstock, he will host a huge outdoor celebration for the Festival’s 50th anniversary. He has booked some of the top Woodstock tribute bands in Canada for the occasion.

“All of the bands we booked will be performing some of the music from the Festival, and they’ll do it amazingly well,” Kominek said. Sly High will take you “Higher” like Sly and the Family Stone took the Woodstock crowd. Joplinesque will lift you out of your seats just like Janis did 50 years ago on Yasgur’s Farm. Wild T and the Spirit will make Jimi Hendrix come alive again. There is also a Credence Clearwater Revival tribute band, and the band Abraxus, which will perform Santana material. “Technology is what’s driving everything. What’s really interesting is audio theatre and radio drama was really big early in the 1900s but what’s really propelling this today is young people,” he said. “The technology of smart phones – they love it. They can download digitally. This really is a great marriage of an old art form and storytelling with the technology of today.” That technology, combined with Blackstone Publishing making Voices in the Wind material available around the world, gives the Chatham-Kent company a global reach. As for what’s next for Voices, Farquhar said re-

tribute band, will open the show, which will run from 4:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. “We really just want to try to create the aura of Woodstock,” Kominek said. “It should be a great day of reminiscences to the power of this great ’60’s music. We’ll be going full out to try to create a really magical event.” The event is operating as a fundraiser for the Czech Hall, which is a meeting and events venue in Dresden. The Hall is in need of insulation and some new steel cladding for outside walls. “It’s a fairly expensive job,” Kominek said. “It’s a little more money than we’ve got on hand, so we’re hoping people will support us and help make it happen.” The event will be licensed; there will be food concessions, including Rick Tanner’s pulled pork. Tickets are available at ticketwindow.ca or by calling Al or Marion at 519-683-2097 or through the Czech Hall Facebook page. A sell-out is expected so get your tickets early.

Misslebrook to run ’Burg chamber The Chatham Voice

The Wallaceburg & District Chamber of Commerce has a new executive director in Jill Misselbrook. People and businesses who work with the chamber will already know Misselbrook as she has been with the agency in a different role until the

board voted promote her to this new position. “Jill was the natural candidate to take on the role and title as she was already doing all of the duties of an executive director,” said Karen Debergh, board chair of the Wallaceburg and District Chamber of Commerce, in a media release. “She had taken on a commanding

honour to be involved in the community through the Wallaceburg & District Chamber of Commerce. I am working hard every day to help all of the Chamber members and businesses.” Misselbrook has more than 25 years of newspaper, radio advertising, and marketing experience in the Chatham-Kent area. In

addition, she and her husband have been operating a small business called CJ Window Tinting in Dresden for the past 14 years. Misselbrook also has an extensive history volunteering for several non-profit organizations such as Dresden Minor Hockey Moms, the Canadian Cancer Society, Relay for Life, and the Dresden

Community Food Bank. “I have been working with Jill for several months now and she has been an absolute delight to collaborate with,” said Spencer Pray, economic development officer with Chatham-Kent Economic Development. “I look forward to continuing to build a strong partnership.”

Heat waves can be dangerous for both you and your fourlegged friends. To ensure your pets’ comfort and safety throughout the summer, follow these three tips. 1. Provide water and shade at all times. Don’t let your cat or dog get dehydrated during a heat wave. Always leave a bowl of fresh water at their disposal. Outdoors, make sure your pet has access to shade at all times. 2. Avoid walking your dog when the sun is at its strongest. It’s highly recommended that you leave your pet indoors between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., as this tends to be the hottest time of the day. Minimize your dog’s risk of heatstroke by taking walks early in the morning or later on in the evening when the weather is cooler. 3. Never leave your pet in the car when it’s hot out. During the summer, the temperature inside your vehicle can get dangerously high in just a few minutes. Even if you’re parked in the shade, and even if you’ll only be gone for a second, never leave your pet alone in the car — his life depends on it.

1. KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEASH Keep Fido leashed at all times. Not only does he risk getting lost, but he could also find himself face to face with a hostile skunk or a prickly porcupine. The woods are home to all sorts of wild animals that he might be tempted to chase.

2. KEEP FIDO COOL AND HYDRATED Leave your dog in the shade when it’s hot outside. If Fido likes to swim and you have access to a body of water, let him wade around to his heart’s content. Make sure he has access to abundant fresh water, and don’t let him drink from puddles, ponds or other stagnant sources.

3. CHECK FOR PESTS Carefully inspect your pet’s fur for ticks, especially after a walk in the woods. 4. BE VIGILANT Never leave Fido alone, and keep a close eye on him when he’s near the campfire. Happy camping

6 things you probably didn’t know were invented in Canada Canadian people and their ideas have made a great impact on the world. These are just six of the many things that were invented right here at home. 1. Peanut butter. Originally invented as a source of protein and calories for people with no teeth, peanut butter was first patented in 1884 by a Montreal pharmacist. 2. Snowblower. You can thank Montreal’s Arthur Sicard the next time you clear your driveway with a snowblower. He was inspired by agricultural equipment when he invented this back-saving alternative to shovelling.

3. Instant replay. In 1955, Hockey Night in Canada changed forever when a CBC producer used a kinescope to replay parts of an NHL game a few minutes after they occurred.

clam juice, tomato juice and vodka can be garnished with a stalk of celery, a pickled bean or a wedge of lime and is served over 350 million times a year.

4. Insulin. This hormone was discovered in 1922 by Canadians Frederick Banting and Charles H. Best. They found that insulin lowered a diabetic dog’s blood glucose to normal levels. Within a year, they invented a way to purify insulin, and used it to successfully treat a boy suffering from severe diabetes.

The next time you enjoy a PB&J, watch a replay of a great hockey play or take your garbage to the curb, know that you have a fellow Canadian to thank for it.

5. Garbage bags. They may not be glamorous, but it’s hard to imagine a time before plastic disposable bags were readily available. They’ve come a long way since their invention in 1950. Garbage bags have become more environmentally friendly over the years, with recyclable and biodegradable versions now widely available. 6. The Caesar. Invented in Calgary in 1969, the Caesar has been a staple of the Canadian brunch scene ever since. This savoury mix of

Life

A weekend to remember for C-K dio, but now that Brenna is hanging up her ballet slippers, jazz shoes, hiphop sneakers and half soles, I can say she spent 10 years dancing at Alexandria’s Dance Studio, making memories and friends for life. And she announced after this year’s final re-

Bruce Corcoran Was that a great weekend or what, Chatham-Kent? Sorry, that was a rhetorical question. Wow. Thank you, RM Sotheby’s, the Historic Downtown BIA, the organizers of the Threshing Festival, and everything else that took place. Yes, downtown Chatham was in the spotlight, and with good reason. It all began at 5 p.m. with the RM parade to kick off the RM 40th/RetroFest weekend. Mechanical elephants from 80 years ago? Check. Kid Rock riding with Rob Myers? Check. By the way, that was Kid Rock’s ride they were in. And did you notice Sam Roberts behind the wheel of a 1966 Mustang? Yep, the Canadian rocker who played in Tecumseh Park that night was in the parade too. Nice work, Fannie Vavoulis! Fannie was the chair of the organizing committee. She set up the media interviews with Sam. Those took place on June 17, just four days before the festivities. When I interviewed Sam, as classic cars came up in conversation, he mentioned when he signed his first record deal, the first thing he did was purchase a 1966 Mustang GT. He loved the car, but since sold it off as he has three kids now. I mentioned the fact to Fannie in a quick e-mail. She thought it would be cool to offer him a chance to drive one again. Fannie got to work with her RM contacts. In no time, she’d found a Mustang. After reaching out to Sam’s PR folks, the car had a driver. And anyone who saw Sam Friday in the parade could not help but see a huge smile on his face. Then again, there were smiles all around this past weekend. The weather was perfect. The parades and displays were amazing. We caught the RM parade near the Capitol Theatre/Frendz area and headed to Indian Creek Road to catch the Classic Car Cruise. The RM parade delivered some wild rides, including a chicken truck, Kid Rock’s Pontiac Bonneville, which was tricked out by the late Nudie Cohn, a huge Oscar the Grouch float, the mechanical elephants, a giant shopping cart, three Batmobiles and even a jet engine. Friends Pete and Arlene were with us to enjoy the spectacle. When that parade ended, we

accepted an invite from other friends Charlene and Eggless Chad to catch the Classic Car Cruise as it went along Indian Creek Road near their house. Great choice as we relaxed in the shade and watched as hundreds of vehicles went by. I loved the parade and the cruise, which featured two Deloreans, at least one Ferrari, tons of vintage Camaros, Mustangs, Firebirds, Triumphs, and some beautiful 1950s iron, as well as some cars and trucks that were much older than that. There were also custom-made rides. Just a great selection and showcase. Proud pop

Notice of Open House Ridge Landfill Expansion, Waste Connections of Canada In the spring of 2018 Waste Connections of Canada commenced with an environmental assessment study under the Environmental Assessment Act to expand the existing Ridge Landfill. The Ridge Landfill has been serving the Municipality of Chatham-Kent community for 50 years and will reach its approved capacity by approximately 2021. Adding capacity to the Ridge Landfill will enable Waste Connections of Canada to continue to provide long term residual waste disposal capacity to industrial, commercial and institutional customers in southern and central Ontario, as well as the Municipality of Chatham-Kent for the next 20 years.

EA Update At the Open House in December 2018, Waste Connections of Canada presented the preferred approach to expand the site, manage landfill gas and to treating leachate. Since that time, the team has been refining the design of the proposed expansion and identifying opportunities to reduce or eliminate potential effects on the environment and neighbours.

You are invited to our third Public Open House! The purpose of the Open House is to get your input on the results of the detailed impact assessment of the preferred alternative for the Ridge Landfill. Time & Date: July 11, 2019 from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm Location: St. Mary’s Hall, 94 George St, Blenheim, ON

Consultation

We would like to invite you to the third Open House for the expansion to learn about and discuss potential effects and proposed mitigation measures. As part of the proposed expansion, Waste Connections of Canada will seek changes to the Chatham-Kent Official Plan and Zoning By-law to implement the proposed land use changes. Notice of a Complete Application and Public Meeting to consider these changes will be provided in accordance with the Planning Act. Municipal staff will be present at the Open House to answer any questions you may have on the proposed land use changes. Members of the public, agencies, Indigenous Communities and other interested persons are encouraged to actively participate in the planning process by attending the Open House or contacting Waste Connections to provide information, comments or to ask questions. On the right track Continued from page 19

And then I received the aforementioned e-mail. The parents floored me with what they said about our daughter. “To say we will miss her at ADS is an understatement. We have always admired her quiet elegance. We love watching her dance. She’s a great example to the younger girls ... Just a good kid with tons of integrity. It will serve her well in everything she does. It’s been a pleasure knowing her and we look forward to hearing about her accomplishments. Take care, Brenna. Respect ❤.” Yeah, I was left speechless, and very proud. Heck, at times I take my kid for granted, expect more from her, forgetting that she is just 17. I treat her like an adult in many ways,

especially in terms of expectations. That’s just unfair. But she is so mature for her age. I’d like to think I was mature, kind, compassionate and polite as a teenager. But that probably wasn’t the case. I remember being a brat as a young child. And I mean a brat. My teen years delivered a great deal of independence, which came with a lack of parental guidance. As a parent, I make mistakes with Brenna pretty much on a daily basis. I revert to my mother’s reactive style of parenting rather than proactive way too often. Thankfully, Brenna also has Mary Beth as a parent too. She is strong where I am weak and delivers more consistent parenting. The combo certainly appears to be paying off for the girl.

Thomas coming to St. Thomas The Chatham Voice

All aboard! Thomas the Tank Engine invites little engineers to go full steam ahead for a day of engaging activities and fun adventures at Day Out with Thomas: The Steam Team Tour 2019. And The Chatham Voice is giving away tickets! See Page 4 in this edition of the newspaper for a chance to win tickets – a

family 4 pack – to a Day Out with Thomas. Children are invited to spend a day with their friend Thomas when the #1 Engine pulls into the St. Thomas Elgin Memorial Centre in St. Thomas, Ontario on July 12, 13 and 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event offers children and their families the opportunity to take a ride with Thomas the Tank Engine, star of the popular

Thomas & Friends series. In addition, they will meet Sir Topham Hatt, Controller of the Railway and enjoy a day of Thomas-themed activities including toy play, photo ops, and more. The tour, now in its 24th year, will make 37 stops across the U.S. and Canada and is expected to welcome nearly one million passengers in 2019. Tour organizers also

announced that Bob the Builder will be joining Thomas at the St. Thomas event for three stage shows and meet and greet sessions each day during the event. This addition to the event is made possible thanks to support from the Celebrate Ontario grant program. The day also includes a 25-minute (approximate) ride with a talking Thomas the Tank Engine, Thom-

as & Friends Imagination Station featuring a variety of activities, a ‘Passport to Adventures’ booklet for children to track their journey at the event and receive a special prize upon completion, and Thomas & Friends-themed activities including toy play, photo ops, temporary tattoos, the bubble zone and the Reptilia reptile zoo.
