Retro Suites earns accolades By Bruce Corcoran bruce@chathamvoice.com
Chatham’s Retro Suites Hotel just keeps earning rave reviews. It garnered Trip Advisor’s Travellers’ Choice award for the sixth straight year. Pete Tsrimbis, general manager of the hotel and the accompanying Chilled Cork restaurant, attributes the high rating to the efforts of the staff. “It’s really a testament to how conscientious our team is. They’re passionate and really caring,” he said. “It really does take a small village to accompany this.” Tsrimbis added the unique elements of Retro Suites, from its one-of-akind rooms to jaw-dropping art and decor, add appeal. “It’s certainly eclectic and unique,” he said. “The antiques and artwork really keeps this intensity. You never get bored.” The decor also evolves, Tsrimbis said, as the artwork and conversation
pieces are swapped out. There are mainstays, however, such as paintings by Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood, the original Ken and Barbie mannequins and the huge toy soldiers that once stood on display at FAO Schwarz. “There’s something for everyone,” Tsrimbis said. “A 75 year old may see an antique and have a little nostalgia from his or her childhood. And a child can come in and be curious about the same piece.” Tsrimbis said earning the accolades doesn’t get old. “The staff is always evolving and striving to reach new heights,” he said. “The current team is the best we’ve ever had. Chatham produces great energetic service industry professionals.” The staff isn’t the only thing evolving, as renovations recently were completed on four of the hotel’s 45 suites. Tsrimbis said another three or four will be revamped in the next year.

Ribfest in Tecumseh Park in Chatham drew a large crowd this weekend with the weather co-operating for the most part. Andrew Shockling of Jack on the Bone from Massillon, Ohio stayed hard at work marinating and cooking ribs and chicken. He had faced a huge line-up Saturday of people eager to try their sauces made with Jack Daniels Tennessee whiskey.

in the community’s core. “It’s slow and steady. There’s a lot of new investment. People are continuing to build on what’s been started,” he said. Seeing the municipality install new sidewalks in the downtown and replace the Fifth Street Bridge are also positive signs, Tsrimbis said, as well as the province upgrading the interchange at Highways 401 and 40. “It’s nice to see the municipality and province are working to improve things,” he said. The work helps destinations such as Retro Suites, which in turns helps get Chatham-Kent noticed. “Being rated so highly by Trip Advisor makes us proud. It should make all of Chatham proud. This is great awareness for Chatham-Kent,” Tsrimbis said.

Volunteers will sell fresh sweet cherries from Delhaven Orchards, a longtime supporter of the event. “They also provide the cherries for pit spitting,” Huggins said of Delhaven. “People don’t realize how fortunate we are to have the fresh fruits and vegetables so close by.” Cherry Central is also known for the interesting flavoured pop it sells. Huggins said getting that pop, which typically isn’t sold around Chatham-Kent, can involve someone making a trip into the U.S., sometimes quite a distance. Another food option is Smokin’ Aces, an amateur smoking competitor that will be doing cherry glazed ribs and other special cherry treats. The Saturday pit spitting competition anchors the entertainment. Huggins said tryouts take

That takes place Friday right after the pie eating

Chatham’s Canadian Cowgirls earn hardware at the Stampede The Chatham Voice
The award-winning Canadian Cowgirls can add one more win at the Calgary Stampede to their long list of accomplishments last week, being named best equestrian colour guard entry in the 2017 Calgary Stampede parade.
There were more than 800 horses in the parade. Terry Jenkins of TJ Stables, home base for the Cowgirls, said the win was filled with emotion. “I rode in my dad’s (Ernie Jenkins) antique silver parade saddle. And since Dad passed away it was like riding along with him,” she

We are the Canadian Cowgirls,” she said. The win put everyone on a high note. “One of the Cowgirls said ‘I don’t want to go to sleep because whatever I dream will never be as good as this!’” Jenkins said. Just to get to Alberta, the team had to raise $70,000. Jenkins said the team is grateful to sponsors, family and friends who supported the team. The Canadian Cowgirls are an elite rodeo style precision riding team. They perform musical drills and are garbed in red and white glittering costumes.

Chatham resident Thomas Muschik is the latest winner in a hot summer of cash locally from the OLG. Muschik won $50,000 with Ontario 49 in the June 21 draw. “I was with my wife the day I bought my winning ticket,” Thomas said in a release. “I chose my own numbers for the first three lines and Quick Pick for the last two. Then I put the ticket in my wallet and waited for the draw that night.” The retired father of two checked his ticket after dinner the day following the draw. “I had a busy day running errands. I was at the store with my wife when I used the ticket checker. I saw ‘$50,003’ on the screen and I had to rescan my ticket because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Oversight appreciated Some people might question the ferocity with which Water Wells First is going after wind turbine companies building in North Chatham-Kent, but you can’t question their sincerity or their results. Thanks to monitoring of the first turbine site under construction by North Kent Wind off Darrell Line, WWF noticed that the steel pipes weren’t capped and sealed, which could allow groundwater to flow down the pipes into the underground aquifer. This practice, if unchecked, could lead to contamination of the water sources for area well owners. The Ministry of the Environment responded to the complaint from WWF by investigating and ordering the company to cap and seal the pipes, which it agreed to do. But what if WWF hadn’t been paying attention? Whose responsibility is to make sure not just the wind turbine companies, but any construction firm, do what they are supposed to? Builders have to acquire permits and are subject to inspection at each stage of building before they can proceed. Does the MOE regularly monitor the turbine construction sites to ensure compliance? Does the municipality who approves the building permits have any responsibility to inspect the sites for compliance? Or is the process just complaint-based, and unless someone is watching, construction crews can basically do what they want? These are questions that seem to remain unanswered and are leading to frustration from both WWF and the municipality. And of major concern is, if this is how construction is proceeding now on turbines, how were all the turbines that came before these ones constructed? For people not on a well, it may not seem to be of any concern, but if the underground aquifer is contaminated and those properties don’t have access to clean water, property values are going to go down, those folks who want to sell won’t be able to, and only those who can afford to hook up to municipal water lines will be able to have potable water. That is something that should be of concern to all of us. And if having the members of WWF videotaping and monitoring construction is what it takes to make sure our water source stays clean, people shouldn’t have a problem with that. They may just want to take a shift themselves.

Opinion
Bennett deserving of hall of fame Sir: I am glad to see that Mike Bennett finally made it to The Chatham Sports Hall of Fame. I had nominated him for that possible induction more than a few years ago, but the nomination failed for lack of support. I think Mike was still working at The Chatham Daily News when I nominated him. I have known Mr. Bennett since high school, when he was sports editor for “The Green & White” Chatham Collegiate Institute newsletter as well as a correspondent for The London Free Press. I can’t say that I always got along with Mike, even back in those
high school days, but that had nothing to do with his writing ability for sports reporting which was always top notch and unique in my thinking, from the traditional standard material that I used to read in newspapers in those years. Mike was able to personalize his stories, and often included various people from around the Chatham and Kent communities, that were at times hilarious to read and kept one wanting to read his column every time it went on the news stand. It is just a shame
that the new technology and downsizing of newspapers in our society of today has resulted in many writer’s like Mike to either be reduced in availability or no longer have jobs promoting community sporting events and the people that take part in them. There are many other good writers out there in Chatham-Kent, now retired, that like Mike, should some day be considered for some sort of honour for their works in our communities. I’m talking about the likes of Bill Saunders, Randy
Coote, Bill Reddick, and Gary Patterson to name a few. Other media personalities, announcers, writers and such in other fields of the news media should also be considered for their stellar work as well. Hopefully, like Mike Bennett, these other news media members may someday get their final notoriety for their work, and not after they have passed on to the after life. All the same, way to go Mike! You are now in a place for all time that you richly deserve! Frank Doyle Chatham
Canada 150 team deserves pat on the back Sir: Kudos to all the people involved who made our 150th Canada Day such a great success. A wonderful day with lots to do and see. But my big kudo goes to a couple my husband and I saw while were taking rest
on St. Clair Street just north of the bridge. They were walking two dogs. The mom stopped to say thanks to my husband as he was in Legion uniform, also a Second
World War veteran. We had earlier been on the Legion float in the parade. I must also say thanks to the lady, whoever you are, if you are reading this. You gave
my husband a nice big hug. You made my day, and I’m sure, his as well. Thank you so much and bless you. Ruth Draper Chatham

Kinsmen bring science fun to Chatham-Kent The Chatham Voice
Mad Science of Windsor and Chatham-Kent is bringing its world-leading science enrichment program to two locations here this summer. Working with both the Chatham and Wallaceburg Kinsmen’s Clubs, Mad Science will offer its engaging “Sources of Forces” program for six consecutive Saturdays. Leading the classes is local Kinsmen member and Mad Scientist, Gerry Flynn, a.k.a. “Dr. Claws.”
Sparking the imaginative learning of children ages five to 12, Mad Science encourages children to explore unique and entertaining topics including Fantastic Flyers, Science of Magic, Fun-damental Forces, Under Pressure, Che-Mystery, and Super Structures. For 60 minutes each week, children will have an opportunity to participate in hands-on experiments and leave with a different take-home project that supports the science.
Parents can register online or by phone at 519839-6094. Tuition is $89.50 per child including all materials, take-homes, and HST. Classes begin on July 15 and run until Aug. 19. In Wallacebug, the classes will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Kinsmen Club on Dufferin Avenue. In Chatham, they will run from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Kinsmen Hall at Erickson Arena. Mad Science of Windsor and Chatham-Kent is a franchised member of The Mad Science Group,
the world’s leading educational enrichment provider for elementary school-aged children.
The company’s programs include entertaining science classes, child-friendly chess instruction, and
its new engineering programming, Brixology, which uses LEGO® bricks in its classes.
tions and bed closures will have a significant impact on safe, quality patient care — particularly in the area of women’s and children’s services — and will result in less access to emergency care.
“It is outrageous for the CKHA management to believe that the way to resolving budgetary issues is to cut services, close beds and lay off frontline RNs. Nurses know this will compromise safe, quality patient care. Health-care employers must stop trying to balance their budgets on the backs of our dedicated and highly skilled RNs,”
said ONA First Vice-President Vicki McKenna in a news release. Nursing positions marked for elimination include: • Five full-time RNS in the Women and Children’s Department, Chatham campus, including a lactation consultant. As well, there will be a decrease in beds from 12 to eight. • Five full-time and two
part-time RN positions cut in the emergency department. • Two full-time RN positions cut in the medical unit, with beds decreased from 54 to 49. Cutting these positions will mean the loss of more than 25,000 hours of direct hands-on RN patient care. “Research shows that there is devastating impacts on our patients and
our ability to provide safe, high-quality care when RN hours are cut. Patients are more likely to experience complications, increased infections, higher morbidity and mortality rates and re-admissions, longer wait times and poorer health outcomes,” said McKenna. “The research is clear: Ontario needs more RNs, not fewer.”

Monitoring pays off for well owners By Mary Beth Corcoran mary@chathamvoice.com
Thanks to close observation by Water Wells First, a potential hazard to the underground aquifer north of Chatham has been ordered fixed by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE). According to WWF spokesperson Kevin Jakubec, the Ministry of Environment sent staff to North Kent Wind turbine construction site on Darrell Line June 28 and to investigate complaints from WWF about improper capping and sealing of the base steel pipes pile-driven into the ground to form the foundation of the turbine. Jakubec said the MOE agreed with the group that the base of the first tower was not properly capped and sealed to prevent rainwater from entering the underground aquifer. It has ordered the company to seal the steel pipe supports and the company will be complying. Jakubec and members of WWF have been monitoring the site to ensure the construction of the turbine follows proper procedure and what is expected in the agreement with the MOE. In an e-mail to the municipality building inspection department regarding the unsealed pipes, Jakubec outlined in detail the problem he observed. “Please investigate this matter and stop construction of North Kent 1 until a suitable type of pile that does not create a hydrological connection to the aquifer is chosen by North Kent 1 executives and engineers,” Jakubec wrote in his e-mail. “It’s important for all the families in North Chatham-Kent who depend on their water wells to see our building inspection department hold the wind developer accountable and protect our natural groundwater resources.” WWF called out Mayor Randy Hope last week with a press conference outside of City Hall, asking him to join the WWF “outside and add your voice to ours
for calling for a proper and full investigation by the MOECC into the aquifer contamination occurring in North Chatham-Kent.” The mayor’s office responded to the email request to participate in the press conference by press release and said, “The Municipality of Chatham-Kent continues to be at the very forefront of addressing concerns of water quality for residents throughout the municipality,” Hope said. “I have, with the full support of council and administration, consistently supported our citizens,” he said. “As recently as April, I wrote to Glen Murray, Ontario Minister of Environment and Climate Change notifying him of local concerns and asking that the province use its technical and legislative power to ensure all necessary steps are being taken to ensure water quality would not be compromised.” Hope pointed out that although the municipality doesn’t have the power to approve or prohibit the construction of turbines, it has consistently acted as an advocate for residents. On Aug. 22 of last year, council instructed its Chief Legal Officer John Norton to participate in the Environmental Review Tribunal hearing and to “take all steps necessary” to protect Chatham-Kent citizens. “We received party standing and were prepared to be full participants in an Environmental Review Tribunal last fall but the hearing was cancelled after Kevin Jakubec reached a settlement with the wind farm developers and ministry.”

Hope said despite repeated requests from the municipality, Water Wells First has yet to provide any scientific evidence which links water quality to wind farm development. “We see jars of water with sediment but there has been nothing brought to
the municipality that indicates there is any connection,” he said. “If there is any evidence, the group needs to bring it forward to authorities.” North Kent Wind, has been conducting water well testing for well owners. Otter Creek Wind has agreed to test as well.

The Arts
Film studies career path gets a boost The Chatham Voice
A lucky high school grad with an interest in film studies just received a boost to education plans thanks to the Chatham-Kent Film Group. Lisa Shaw, a recent graduate of CKSS, is the scholarship recipient for film
studies at Wilfred Laurier University in Kitchener. She will receive $1,500 in the fall. Shaw, 18, has plans to study for four years at Laurier, one of which will be completed at the Vancouver

Film School in conjunction with Laurier. The Chatham-Kent Film Group consists of eight volunteers who are a s s o ciated with the
Toronto International Film Festival. The group shows international films that ordinarily would not get shown at the major theatres. CKFG has existed for 20

Although rain and softened ground cancelled the fireworks the night before, celebrations were not dampened as dancers, vendors, bands and a historical reading of Harriet Tubman was performed.

Losing the extreme heat of ABTs Lovely letter writer and faithful reader Ruth Draper popped into the office Monday morning, and asked me a simple question, one I answered too politically. Ruth asked if I had barbecued on the weekend, to which I replied, “yes.” But I didn’t tell her exactly what. The answer is “Atomic Buffalo Turds.” Ruth is a sweet retired woman and I guess subconsciously I didn’t want to offend her, but the reality is she’d have gotten a giggle out of the name. And truth be told, the way we did them, you can pull “atomic” out of the name. You see, an Atomic Buffalo Turd (ABT) is the name for stuffed jalapeno peppers wrapped in bacon. They are very, very tasty, and can be darned hot. In fact, the first time I ever did them on the Big Green Egg, and took them to Sensei Jeff’s place for an afternoon party, they were scorching. The hottest thing I’d ever tasted, let alone cooked. But, man, were they yummy, as long as you had a beverage nearby. Yet, at that thermonuclear level of pepper heat, they weren’t for everyone, so I went and did a little more Internet research. The heat from the peppers comes from the membrane and seeds. We’d pulled that out of the peppers, but they still were so darned hot. But I learned that if you soak them for a time in water, with a little milk, you can pull some of the heat out of the peppers. Soak them too long, you essentially pull all of the heat, leaving behind just the flavour. I personally like the heat. Ditto for my daughter, as well as her dance buddy Reegan and that girl’s father, Eggless Chad. We were at Chad and Charlene’s on the weekend to hang out by the pool and I thought it was time for some ABTs. We grabbed the peppers, cream cheese, shredded blended cheese and some disposable gloves. The gloves are to prevent the oil from the peppers getting onto anyone’s hands as it can be hard to wash off, and one wipe of the eye can leave you in a lot of discomfort. Two people halved the peppers and pulled out the seeds and membrane. That’s easily accomplished with a dessert
Bruce Corcoran spoon. We then soaked the peppers for at least a half an hour,

probably much longer, but we weren’t paying close attention to the clock. After that, we mixed up the cream cheese with some of the shredded cheese, and added Old Bay seasoning. The mixture went into the pepper halves, which were in turn wrapped in bacon. Chad put them on his gas barbecue at 350 F. We cooked them for a while on an old cookie
sheet and then placed them on the upper grill to finish. The peppers were delicious, but, due to the time in the rinse, were mostly without heat, which was much to Reegan’s dismay. Still, they were gobbled up. I promised Reegan that next time we’d leave some of the peppers out of the soaking process and dunk the rest for a shorter period of time.
Finn gets a new name
I’ve taken to calling our cat by a new name. The ladies of the house call him Finn, but to me, he is Satan. Well, when he’s cute and cuddly, he’s Finn, but Satan likes to show up all too often. He’s clawed the crap out of our legs and feet – mostly while just trying to jump in our laps – but when he gets that look in his eyes, look out.
